My brain felt like mush, a bowl of tapioca.

I felt myself sinking, fading.

Then I heard a strange voice, shouting, "Initiating the voltage test! 50,000 volts, clear!"

A burning shock travelled through my body, tearing a scream of pain from my lungs.

The electric shock was enough to clear my mind.

I came to and found myself strapped to an operating bed, my arms and legs bound and separated by restraints.

Illuminated from above were shadowy faces painted red and green.

"Vital signs stable! Great Leader, the subject has survived!"

"Very good!" Another voice, harsher and fiercer, intoned. "Thanks to the resources from Foundation X, Shocker will be reborn, stronger than ever! And this weapon will be the key to Shocker's ultimate victory!"

I guess that's the Great Leader? Certainly sounds like a Great Leader if I ever heard one…

The voice was coming from an eagle symbol with an X painted across its chest. A green light on the eagle's chest flickered in time with the voice.

I quietly glanced downward and noticed a strange device mounted on my waist.

It was like a belt, with an oversized buckle. And… the straps… I felt them digging into my skin - pricking it, drawing blood.

"Indeed!" The Great Leader continued. "This Driver will bring out untold power!"

I felt paralyzed. And yet… I started to recall who I once was.```

I was the consistent 4th placer in my class, and did cycling on the side.

And yet… waking up, I feel like I can never return to the man I once was.

I'd like to think I was on good terms with most of my professors… and one in particular.

Why am I thinking of Professor Hongo now?

Professor Hongo was a former alumnus who sometimes returned to the university as a lecturer or special teacher.

Apparently, he had an IQ of 600, which I couldn't believe even after sitting through a semester's worth of class with him. How hadn't Mensa called him yet?

He liked to lecture about peace and justice, but also about life's value, ephemerality, and boundless potential.

He also mentioned a brief stint as a superintendent general for the Tokyo police.

In short, he was a kooky old man - and yet there was something about him that made me look up to him.

Judging from the photos of him as a motorcycle racer in the 70's, long hair aside, he seemed pretty badass.

What would Professor Hongo do…?

I clenched my fists.

He talked about peace and justice. He talked about how precious human life was.

That's why, I…!

I tested the restraints surreptitiously.

A blue, feminine humanoid themed after the sea folded its arms.
Following the blue humanoid like a child, a gray humanoid with a rhino’s horn shuffled out.
“My, my…” The blue humanoid remarked coyly with a voice distinctively feminine. “This school is full of such delicious, complex desire… One could even call it… Yummy…”
“Yay…!” The gray humanoid drawled, his voice slow and deep. “A buffet for Mezool and me…!”
“Chowa! You four don’t look very friendly –” Before promptly getting thrown into one of the walls, these were the last words that escaped a certain Bakushin sprinting class rep’s mouth.
At the sound of the crash, some Umamusume began to scream and panic.
The green humanoid produced a silver coin-like medal and grabbed some unfortunate Umamusume, then shoved the coin into a slot that suddenly appeared on her head.
The students of Tracen watched, horrified, as a mummy-like creature manifested from the Umamusume’s body, and she slumped to the ground.```

“K-KAICHO!!” Tokai Teio screamed, somewhere between sadness and rage, and charged at the humanoids like a bereaved child - but a medal to her head turned her into a monster as well.
“Run, my ponies!”
“Let me take you all one-on-one!!”
Fuji Kiseki and Hishi Amazon were next to go, turning into monsters as they tried to protect their dorm members. 
Screams filled the halls, as the Umamusume, once running free, were one by one turned into prisoners of their desire.
The very same desire that drove them forward to chase victory would now turn them into medal-fueled monsters.```

"Indeed." Riley nodded. "I've read up on vampire lore, Vladimir. The only reason vampires didn't show up in mirrors back then... is because they were lined with silver - the metal most creatures of the night fear!"

"The other guests are all diurnal beings, like me. It wasn't a full moon, so Fang wasn't transformed. In short, the reflection Mercy saw stabbing the victim... was yours!"

"Dammit...! But I couldn't make that level of damage on the body!"

"That WOULD be true. However! I'll admit, you were clever, trying to frame Fang by making the slash wounds resemble werewolf claw marks."
