Since this just got featured by Hamish on the Marathon story page I thought I'd forward it here. For a while I'd wanted to take a stab at KAAL1 as a runner, and wasn't sure how to do it.

After drawing the OG security officer as a sexy catboy for fun, I decided to make this my NuMarathon counterpart and swing the entirely opposite direction by taking it entirely seriously as an in-universe concept.

I always wanted to make them some amalgamation of a hacked runner bot with the cat frankensteined into it, like MIDA was just using whatever they coudl get, but between thinking of the idea and drawing it I was shown Rook, so half the work was sort of done for me

Search and Destroy is LOCUS hand swiping the ability HUD over your PFP which lasts 5 seconds
Glitch's Disruptor Pulse fires a pulse towards you with a 3-4 second cool-down
Active Camo Tactic uses animation that reveals and hides the hood and applies the effect on your pfp
Echo Pulse Scanning uses the helmet opening up and having a small echo around your pfp, having the open helmet for 4-5 seconds

Je pense en tant que artiste que la création c’est justement l’inspiration. Et notre cerveau s’inspire des choses qu’il a vu depuis sa naissance. Et donc à un moment donné certaines personnes convergent dans une direction. Cela s’appelle la synchronisation et donc personnellement je suis contre les droits de propriété. Qui empêchent l’humain de se développer et donc l’ennemi c’est notre système. Le gars qui a fait ces chaussures n’y connaît sans doute rien au jeu vidéo et pourtant quelque part dans son cerveau une graine comme dans le cerveau d’autres gens dans le monde qui étaient synchronisés ont produit un super jeu vidéo, et des super chaussures. Il faut voir cela positivement. Malheureusement l’humain n’a pas encore compris qu’on était tous synchronisés, dommage.

I don't even know how to tell it, but I used Blender and the landscape generation add-ons, GScatter (plus the plant library). I also took materials from Blender Kit. The rest is just imagination (and computer death by blender)

Speaking of the decals' style, I opened Photoshop and threw together a couple of shapes, arranged them, and it turned out to be something reminiscent of the Marathon style.

Study a lot and invest in good courses, both UX-focused and UI-focused. I can’t recommend specific ones because the ones I took are from Brazil.

Practice your UI skills as much as you can. For example, copy websites, apps, anything you can: just copy it. This will expand your reference library and help develop your creativity.

In Figma, learn AUTO-LAYOUT and COMPONENTS. These will help you a lot in the beginning. (I wish I had that tip when I started, lol).
And lastly, follow UX/UI pages and designers on social media. You’ll learn a lot and stay updated on current trends.

Games is super interesting, I love film but I don't discard working for games in the future

for FX the workflows get more and more similar every year as hardware and software improve

games do use Houdini for there particle systems an alot of laser scanning and photogrammetry is used now baked onto a normal map

God i love low to high poly workflows. i dont need to care about topology to much when making my high poly i can boolean stuff without a care in the world

In terms of taking inspiration from marathon or replicating the look, there are a lot of flat matte or blank surfaces, without much texturing details. Some pinpricks and symbols dot the canvas of armour, but nowhere near the saturation in your works. It’s not necessarily bad, just at that scale consider leaving more blank space for symbols and such without necessarily adding texture details (if you’re going for this style of course).
