To be honest, after playing Arc Raiders, i am curious about Marathon.

Arc doesnt work for me personaly. Has some good ideas, like you play single, you are matched with single players.

But still i think Hunt: Showdown 1896 is in this genre the most fun. But there are to less new players sadly

Yeah hunt is one of the best in the genre. I think it’s because of two reasons. You never get gear locked out of a fight, any gun has the potential to get a kill and there’s a strong pve mission that paces out the pvp. ARC does these things too.

I had a really funny run recently. I was shooting at someone in a building across. A third person appeared and shot at me, we both go down.
The first player i was shooting at appears, finishes the person who helped them and thanks me and resurrects me.
I was their friend for the rest of the game and then put them down on the extraction revealing i they raised the wrong person xD

Idk there’s a lot of stuff it does right, it feels like I don’t have to take it seriously and I love it for that. The enemies feel more like an obstacle than anything else, with the way they’re designed you can get around 85% of them by just running indoors

I really admire the focus it has on the enemies’ system of logic, with how finding and hitting their weakpoints feels satisfying and effective. I don’t like pumping headshots into enemies while they just shoot me, that kinda gameplay turned me off from fallout 4. Sure they’re difficult to fight, but it feels more fun to frantically try and shoot out the propellers on the arc drones before they get me

I also admire how simple arc raiders is. No abilities, no classes, no passives outside of a slowly-developed skill tree, no etc, you’re just in a neat place with only your wits, your guns, and whatever utility you thought would be of good use. No tetris-ing your stash.

That simplicity brings me closer to the parts of the game I find more fun. Talking to randoms, getting bullied by like 3 drones, baiting snitches from far away to farm them, talking with my friends about stuff while we run, etc.

I also like the third person. If I want to sweat, I play the finals. I do not have any interest in sweating in a game where my long-term progression is on the line to be lost, where it’s very difficult to learn because skill differences can lead to very quick fights. Avoided EFT. I really appreciate how the third person gives an extra level of perception, it makes situations feel more like puzzles than a measure of how loud I set my game to. Fights feel fairly unfair /pos

I don’t hate marathon, but I have to admit that it wasn’t really fun for me and my friend. I insisted to them a million times that we should at least try the game because we both got into the most recent playtest, and eventually they caved but we didn’t play for long. It just didn’t feel as fun. I kinda got the “sweat 🥺” heeby jeebies.

I’m fine with games that unfairly bully the shit out of you as long as they present an interesting and satisfying puzzle. My favorite game is rain world. The part I like about it the most is that it takes roguelikes’ focus on knowledge in progression and only adds back “you will respawn where you last slept”. It’s simple

I think 3rd Person PVP absolutely sucks balls. It's not just an Arc issue, either. 3-peaking just makes it way too easy to gather information. 90% of the fights in the game are already devolving into sitting on a corner with your face pressed into a wall like you're licking a short bus window. One of the most important things you need to master to become proficient at anything competitive is punishing mistakes. Yet, it's almost impossible to punish mistakes in Arc Raiders, because said person is just sitting around a corner waiting to perfectly line up a 2-tap with an Avil or Toro. Not to mention the servers are so bad that you'll probably die before they even round the corner on your screen

At this point, I don't think Marathon could ever measure up to the success of Arc Raiders. However, if Bungie can deliver their classic gunplay with solid servers and satisfying PVP engagements, I know what game I'll be playing

idk man, your take skips over a lot of what actually frustrates people with arc raiders. you mention what you enjoy, but none of the bad pvp moments or the desync that leaves players feeling like they had zero control. those “i couldn’t have done anything” deaths are a huge part of why people drop the game.

you also talk like third person is a pure positive, but ignore wall-licking, corner-camming, peeker’s advantage, and how the desync makes all of that even worse. calling it a “puzzle” doesn’t really fit when so many fights hinge on camera abuse instead of smart play.

and the progression point is still ironic—the whole thrill of extraction shooters is risking and losing the gear you earned. plus, even the skill progression isn’t guaranteed; embark said they prefer voluntary wipes but aren’t opposed to forced ones if needed.
not saying you can’t like the game, but your take feels pretty selective.

also wholly just personal preference, but i wouldn't really mind my skills getting wiped. i care more about my crafting recipes and access to maps. im fine with quest wipes only if it's not the same questline over and over, i'd probably get a little bored of going to the same places. i like using cheap low-tier gear for the most part, though sometimes i'll run in with an anvil. as for util, i just bring 4 bandages, 2 shield rechargers, and 3 little smoke grenades

Starting gear, probably using the wrong ammo. Light ammo is literally meant basically for PVP. Also the game tells you this in so many different ways its not even funny.

if your having trouble getting your link because of all the gremlins spamming the wrong command, send your playtest command in the playtest chat, turn off your wifi so auto scroll stops and then you can hold you message, copy the message link and then paste it in google and you can see your message and the link will be there without trying to fight your discord to get back to your message and link

Get lucky. I'd assume previous playtest experience does have at aleast a slight increase in your odds, but doesn't guarantee it. Likewise, not having been in any of them does actually make you a fresh pair of eyes with nothing to compare it to in terms of previous experiences.

Arc Raiders felt fine to me for the most part, the Wasps were just exceedingly annoying despite using heavier ammo and hitting shots. Part of me wonders if I specifically just encountered the secret god of wasps that could eat several mags.

I got the tip to shoot their rotors on my literal first loading screen and I have experience with previous games with similar enemies like Deus Ex: MD. I knew to bring heavier ammo to go against robots and lighter for players. I was 100% shooting the Wasp with heavier ammo in its weak points. (Maybe not heavy ammo, but medium more than likely.)

There it is. Game said shoot the rotors, never said to shoot the back ones. So I was following a tip that wasn't the best. Still, you'd think a few mags of medium ammo would work when you hit most of your shots.
