Yeah I play fighting games my ass don't care about steam charts
I just hope the game survives long enough and does well enough that they can afford to put a full Pfhor faction into the game.
OH MY GOD MORE PEOPLE ARE PLAYING CRIMSON DESERT THAN STREET FIGHTER IT'S SO JOEVER
next person i see talking player counts unironically is going to get hit with the "go try and start a match of blacklight: tango down and tell me that this game is dead"
I donāt even know what that is
I am tried of people bringing up player counts at this point. So much so that I'm going to engage in the conversation about it. š
having even 5k concurrent players is a lot
its just nice to vent about how nonsense those guys are lol
Having a game with constant big updates for like 10 years is not something im used to (didnt play destiny or anything similar)
i'm a MMO player so i'm intimately familiar with a game being great for a while and then Not being that anymore
I am a naturally anxious person, just the unfortunate situation I find myself in. So Iām anxious about having an unresolved narrative (curse you Patrick Rothfuss) but otherwise the player count means diddly squat to me.
at least the last ffxiv patch turned things around slightly
*Correction I played a bit of late d2 but same thing
I struggled getting into the lore for Destiny ngl it was a lot to take in
throw a hydroxyzine
guys <1k players at 7 am PT marathon is dead
i love ffxiv but holy shit i am so glad we escaped the "is it colonialist to tell a murderous empire to not use the soul mulching machine?" storyline
Iām not a FF14 player but my close friend is he really hated dawntrail. I play wow, that game has been all over the shop for years but you just keep on keeping on n
Guyyys marathon is dead the player count dropped when the average US American went to sleep guys!
dawntrail was fine enough but the patches have been mostly bad
OK but more people do need to hop on when I'm on. I don't know why everyone is sleeping at 9pm PST. It's not like it's early in the morning or overnight for a lot of folks.
or at least radically underwhelming
Thanks but I have Xanax
Even better!
Yeah I followed some content creator during endwalker and it did seem pretty good I was tempted to try ff14 but then I remembered I didnāt like the combat much or the aesthetic. Just personal preference, no judgement on anyone who likes it.
I ended up just watching lore recap channels to follow along
People always tell me how amazing titanfall 2 was but never play
Like damn
i'm going to say something controversial, as a titanfall fan since the betas for 1:
Oooo
Ope
titanfall 2 was doomed to irrelevancy because respawn make games that are either
- so obscenely high skill ceiling that within a year anyone who isn't cracked quits, because it's not fun anymore
- sanded down so hard that it fails to retain people's interest because they were looking for the above
the campaign is fun though i really loathe how 2 mangled the shit out of the lore and tone
This filthy casual doesn't entirely agree, but it's a good point.
i say this as one of the freaks who's pretty good at titanfall 2
lol
everyone gasses up titanfall 2 but it's like pulling teeth trying to get anyone to play it with you
Ah come join my friends and I. It's a regular rotation.
that and releasing next to cod and battlefield i believe
don't fuck with titanfall fans. we don't play the game we keep wishing would come back
The skill ceiling is pretty high especially on the movement tech
that was actually respawn's choice, against EA's warnings
That did not help. The release was terribly timed.
they locked in that date and then dice dropped the bf release date
shoots own foot off
Oh, whoops.
Thats what I saw, so confusing
I will play Titanfall 2 with any of you. I will grab my Monarch and we will have fun, you just need to DM me.
I played BO2 for the first time ever a couple years ago, people were like oh such a great game and the new one sucks and im like... play it now then?
black ops 7 is actually incredible it just got lolcow'd by people over the bad campaign- you can't go back and play old cod games reliably
Im a sonic fan so I return to old games back and forth a lot haha
many of them have significant security issues, there's no crossplay so if you're a pc player you can't play most of the older ones
For me it was simple as buying in the Xbox store, I assume ps5 is the same
Ah right, no crossplay
i don't play shooters on console
Im more used to console
I donāt really go back to older games. Once I move on thatās it.
But switched to pc recently
I only play on console. Mouse and keyboard is too hard for me. >.>
Ngl sonic games are meant to be replayable so thats fair
Consoles for shooters, desktop for 4X and strategy games.
i am black ops 2's strongest soldier but it sucks trying to play it again
there's a dedicated server mod, but you don't retain any of your official data, obviously
so all the progress i spent years getting is just in limbo
I mostly liked it for the single player campaign. It was really good. Played a little PvP and thought it was just okay.
I stopped playing COD after Black Ops 1, I donāt know what I moved on to but COD has had zero appeal since then.
unless it's an infinity ward title, then i just save my money and go on with my life
that's a surprisingly tricky question to answer
bo7 was billed, campaign wise, as a direct sequel to bo2, and then it was not, so that sucked for me
MW2 was an adolescent staple.
the modern warfare games are just pure military propaganda garbage ft. shockingly gay men
the new ones i mean
Is that why I am the way I am? š¤
the old MW games are just regular military propaganda with less gay stuff lol
Oh, then no.
nah i'm talking new MW2, there's a mission in the campaign where ghost and soap are alone and talking on the radio and they pretty much flirt non stop for 30 minutes
easily the best thing in that game
and then MW3 happened
Oh see now I wanna play it.
COD campaign used to be mindless fun
anyways, uh, so. sort of? there's kinda two main subseries with their own stories that have become more interconnected recently
the black ops games recently have been firing on all cylinders which is why bo7's campaign being bad sucks so hard
cold war and 6 have legitimately compelling and engaging stories that have just enough bite to be interesting
black ops 6 is about how even the people carrying out the most heinous acts for the military cannot trust those institutions
which is kinda a crazy thing for a call of duty game to do
Am I being sold on picking up more CoD games? What? That wasn't on my bingo card for today...
treyarch make really good games, unfortunately for my wallet lol
Donāt succumb
its not worth it
Resist!
never buy a cod
I need to still play through the halo games lols
just get gamepass
š strong opinions, I see.
i don't think anyone in a discord server for a bungie game can throw stones, your glass house might not be able to take the strain ;p
I endorse this
Shots fired! Shots fired!
yes i am aware, i'm just trying to talk about something i find interesting
Simon defines his identity on one thing, not two
Ŕimon, pronounced shimon or no
yes
it does really suck how talking about cod with any sort of meaningful criticism or positive things to say gets drowned out by people who hate it on principle and people who just mindlessly buy them all and refuse to engage critically
His deep hatred for corpos that cheat gamers out of their hard earned credits
Nuance is dead. š©
ah hello friend
its not that its just its never worth to pay 70 dollars for those games
i really do not care to have this debate, sorry
I forgot how expensive games had gotten.. Marathon was so cheap.
its crazy how many older games are still sold at full price
COD is super expensive
im just using it universally, 80 euros then
even marathon was concerningly expensive for me :/
Have you looked at our news? I'll trade you game prices in a heart beat.
lol try over 100 dollars canadian for a single triple a game
i'm canadian so your news will be my news in 5 years, unfortunately
And then the price of the new Mario Kart š
At least y'all resisted in your last election, unlike us.
atleast nintendo is shockingly lowering prices on digital games
i have STRONG opinions on that that definitely do not go in this server :p
Oh I can imagine. š
They are? Haven't seen that at all, just the opposite
I mean your election was like a wake up call to the rest of the planet.
What? I don't beleive this.
They're at best reselling the old PokƩmon games for $20 but before then they rereleased galaxy for $70 or something
Itās easy to believe this prevents reselling the game when youāre done with it by encouraging you to purchase digital
Inchresting
I earnestly hate Nintentdo for how they treat fans, but then the fans keep opening up their wallets, so maybe I shouldn't blame Nintendo.
Corpos gonna corpo
Itās like the scorpion and the frog
Good to see the lore being discussed in here
We have had many extensive lore discussions
sometimes you need a break from the 4th person asking "why does mida hate the uesc" in a row
Some of them too extensive that they devolved into the bizarre
Controversial ||How people talk about the mario movies have melted my brain. "This is for kids" so is cocomelon š||
Im so surprised by this bc they really lay it out for you
Why does MIDA hate the UESC though? Inquiring minds gotta to know!
HELP
We've only got so much material to discuss right now. Cut us some slack. š
Animated content is always for children, duh.
We talked about cat lore, that was a doozy
to be clear i don't mean to hate on people who know little and are curious
but like. sometimes you really just gotta tell someone to go read terminals on the story page lol
They just forget about yk dreamworks, ghibli, even the sonic movies, no no animated film should have no meaning it should just beam you with references while also changing lore
No one thought but now that you mention itā¦
Some of my favourite animations were by Don Bluth
Those had some heavy stories
it is honestly insane how good the sonic movie is
and i heard the sequels are better
i'm not a sonic fan but i had a REALLY good time with the first movie
and i knew enough about sonic to go "oh, shit, that's a deep lore cut" sometimes
Imo each sequel is better than the last
hell yea
I feel they tried to lighten up sonic 3 / sa2's story a bit much but the beats are still all there
Except whatever was going on with Gerald..
Lol
But yeah
it's nice that videogame adaptations are generally like. fine to really good, now
shoutout paul anderson for ensuring that monster hunter bucks the mold by being terrible, tho
Halo TV Series begs to differ
Mario movie succeeded in keeping it fully animated and keeping game stuff in but thats what makes the issues so frustrating now
My dad loves it for some reason. He never played the games š
Is it bad this is how I feel about the anomaly now? š
I need a copypasta
i was going to make a joke about "and then the cyborg and durandal passionately kiss" before realizing i was just perusing durandal's fanfic archive
Yeah, I can see that but these guys were just trying to steal some Dune. Trying to make that young girl the Muadādib.
It was heartbreaking to watch
Doesn't master chief take off his helmet too
Smh
Just so dumb
Seeing the master chiefās butt cheeks was something I never thought would happen
OMG WHAT
Yeah donāt you know the who thing with calling Master Cheeks
Cause we have to see his butt cheeks in one seen for some reason
Then he bones some woman who was abducted by the Covenant as child and is sent to be a spy amongst the humans
Oh my god I should have guessed
I know that sounds like bad fan fiction but it really happened in the show.
The show sounds like bad fan fiction in general
Reminder not to use a three letter synonym for the act procreation in this channel.
It makes 343ās writing seem Hugo worthy
BoBs
There was a voice memo that was like there was something in a contract about repopulating
About 300 years
Hence BoBs (born on board)
And it was highly regulated
If you mean the original trip, the marathon travelling from earth/mars to tau ceti
I highly recommend Mandalore Gaming's series on marathon; you can definitely get more story info from videos that are purely lore focused, but I think mandalore's videos strike a nice balance of catching you up on the lore and also having a lot to say about the gameplay of the original games
No just mars to TCIV for the context of your question
Ah
Just the original earth/mars to tau ceti
and then I guess whatever trip got us to tau ceti hundreds of years later
It was 300 year trip and cryo was reserved for the upper echelon of colonists
The PR codex entry mentions the reproductive agreements.
The people out of cryo had to maintain the ship and replenish the working crew via procreation
It was something like 300 years to get to tau ceti, and then the distress signal the marathon sent back to earth/mars during the Pfhor invasion took about 90 years to arrive
Sorta. That message probably never got sent.
I'm not certain how long there was in between the marathon's arrival + new cascadia getting set up and everyone getting wiped out
The number is definitely out there somewhere I just don't know it personally
90 years doesnāt make sense for a light speed communication over 12 ly. It was probably a typo before and now itās suggested to probably be Durandalās fault it never got sent.
Doesn't the introduction cutscene of the current Marathon mention the distress signal?
Yeah, Durandal sends a different one from what Leela did.
That said I also thought Durandal fucked off out of the tau ceti system on a stolen ship so idk what homie is still doing on the marathon at all
Itās weird that the transmission took 90 years to reach earth when TCIV is only 12 light years away a radio signal would only take 12 years to reach earth since it travels at the speed of light
Yes, and!
Well probably yes. But also certainly and. One sec.
Maybe it isnt a fully connected network or something
Bad range
Bro left a copy of himself behind or something?
Based on orbiting stuff or something
Itās just how EM waves travel, their a form of light and travel at the speed of light
Do we we know that they were capable of speed of light transmission back then though? I mean now it seems we can communicate instantly with earth/mars but we're also dealing with way better tech
Radio transmission is at the speed of light
Like in real world physics
What is required is faster than light communication to overcome the 12 year delay in transmission
Didn't ONI say we were establishing contact with factions back on earth/mars?
yeah but hardware physical side point a to b
So it may be that we have that now
Tru
But we have way better technology now than was originally on the marathon
They didn't have no biomata they had to settle for Frankensteins
Abandoned mjolnir battleroid raid boss would go crazy....
*radio for example is limited by line of sight
What youāre referring to is signal strength, or wave amplitude and yes that may diminish over great distances but the speed it travels at is constant
Itās a bet, but likely not abandoned. Either contemporary UESC or one of the originals captured by the Pfhor.
Provide no black holes are in its path
Moreso line of sight but yeah in space
Thereās that sure but itās space
In a vaccuum
Lots of nothing
Equanimity was going to have Battleroids aboard at one point, and even though people balked at the notion, Iām not convinced.
Idk how do asteroid belts and other fuckery mess with it
Didnāt mess with Voyager 1 & 2 transmitting back to earth
Ah true but in my mind tau ceti is so far like theres gotta be asteroid and magnetic bs going on
Hitting something in space is more remarkable than going on forever and not hitting anything. (Astronomers donāt correct me; Iām making a point not a perfect factual statement.)
Yeah fair
Totally, all that would contribute to a distorted signal, something unrecognisable but it wouldnāt change the travel time unless the signal was passing a black hole
Voyager 1 and 2 went a fraction of a fraction of less than 0.01 light years, tau ceti is like 12 light years
I think they just goofed on the lore to increase the drama of it all
Itās like Prometheus in the movie one of the characters says theyāre half a billion miles from earth. In reality thatās about the distance of mars from earth.
He's still around in spirit.
https://marathon.karnemir.com/codex/world/cryo-archive/collectibles#h.4wazkzl34y5l
Well with every peak thereās an accompanying trough
Live has ups and downs like a sine wave # deep
Trew
when we got to nyquist my friends would always make the joke about my discord user
Man I havenāt thought of that for years
it feels weird how dumb easy that is vs everything else
Yeah
It feels like that and I only graduated a couple years ago š
There, there
y=1
Are we talking about the waves again
I mean, space is mostly empty, all the stuff is clustered around stars and other gravity wells
And tides!
Ik ik
Who wants to talk about tides during my long bus ride home?
Maybe waves, too, if you really want.
deimos is a moon and the moon's haunted
Why do you suppose that the Sāpht history refers to the Jjaro as the Tide?
idk, at the moment all we know is that its poetic
*brings gun "moons haunted"
Yeah itās a metaphor. I wonder what the metaphor means.
Moons haunted in Destiny also
Sāpht like to speak in metaphor, but they likely originate from some kind of amphibious like creature. The Fālickta iirc can breathe under water and traverse land. Iām sure water plays a very important role in Sāpht culture.
Wait
Thats interesting
Bc i swear so many of the cinematics the runners die in water
I think youāre correct.
āSliding in water produces no heat.ā
I remember looking for one and I kept running into other ones lolol
IDK if it means anything big picture though.
Does look cool with the blue pooling out
But Bungie does like subtle references so thereās that.
New theory: runners are f'lickta
Well, there is also the whole "there are two types of games, jumping and menues" argument. In which Destiny, believe it or not, is menus. And you look at your character a lot during menus. Marathon is even more menus.
Yeah S'pht being swamp monsters and us having a dire marsh map is an interesting combination
Yet another way the new marathon really does nail the original series
Dropped straight into a water treatment center full of bugs or whatever level 1 of Marathon 2.
This is why I expect a lava level
What's the best way to get the lore collectibles? Pinwheel got me maxed out in surveillance records and one other one I can't remember right now, but I'm not sure where best to get the others.
Dire Marsh is also a??? For me. Lock downs maybe? Got some decent stuff out of those, but are there any places where it might just be loose loot or in containers? Genuinely no idea where to get them on perimeter.
The best way I've found is to get carried by someone good
Keycard rooms tend to have them. Also wall safes sometimes have them
Wardens will have stuff too
safes and commanders
running thief to visor sweep for blue and purple containers is good
keycards, wall safes, and commanders are your safest bets
sometimes they will randomly spawn in other containers too but mostly those
Oh yeah always check commander drops
Perimeter seems to be the hardest just because the loot rarity is lower than other maps, gotta focus key rooms and activities. Outpost and Cryo have them everywhere
Great source
perimeter does also have some natural spawns for some blues, if you go into the upper floors of the relay buildings, next to the conference tables they have that white room with a bulletproof window and a door that can have stuff spawn loose in there
like they'll just be on the ground
my biggest beef with perimeter so far has been the god damn survey drone cartridges where ARE you
Cryo collectibles? Essentially complete. Outpost? Getting there. Dire Marsh? Ehhhh. Perimeter? Get bent.
Itās comical yeah
Though tbf cryo shits collectibles
The blues are everywhere and the purples in every other lockbox
My biggest beef with perimeter is I STILL donāt understand what the datawall is or how it works despite walking through the damn thing. I donāt even understand how they moved it along. It has nothing that looks like actuators or computers or anything
moves data
through the wall
The built the data wall
Boi
Presumably thereās sensors all in the walls
Ok but why an inflatable wall?
Thatās impractical af
and the relays going wayy up into the atmosphere
Why not? Itās the fuuuutuuure.
(I have nothing meaningful to add because the codex entries around it are useless.)
Because every other tech choice for exoplanet colonization makes total sense EXCEPT data wall
That might be why they donāt bother explaining it. š
But it woke the anomaly whatever it is!
I thought data wall and the relays were made in response to the anomalies emergence ?
Uhhh iirc they were deployed to study the mysterious energy/radiation coming from the planet from the offset, and then after the incident and after deploying more is when the anomaly spring up.
Itās spread out amongst a few entires. Let me see what I can scrounge up.
Oh I thought the planetary radiation was the anomaly. It could be smth else tho ur right
There was always weird energy coming from the subsurface, Iām 99% sure. The anomaly was just the weird blowing up, more or less.
Kuzmin I kinda lays out the timeline in a broad events sense, but the timing of the anomaly isnāt specifically mentioned.
True true
I know I'm in the minority but I wish there was a mode where I could just run around the map and explore and collect JUST the lore stuff without getting ganked lol, sometimes I just want to have that Marathon space experience without getting sniped from 500 meters by someone I couldn't even possibly see if I had to
`ANALYZINGā¦
FILE TYPE: Personal Log
PERIOD: Colony Era
SPEAKERS: Kuzmin, I. [ID: IKUZ]
TOPIC: Complications at the Perimeter Expansion Site
SUMMARY: Terra-platforming engineer Izaak Kuzmin seems to be having a breakdown.
[IKUZ]: After the relays went up⦠We should've known. We should've⦠left. The Zone. The planet. That much data. That much⦠untranslated information. We know planets⦠I know planets. How they work. What's inside. Only, yeah⦠Only, maybe, this one's different. This one's not like ours. Not like anything we've ever considered. And instead of respecting that. Instead of acknowledging, ya know, that maybe we aren't prepared to poke at answers we don't even know how to ask. Instead of anything else⦠We built towers to the goddamn sky to steal impossible data from the heart of a world we thought we'd conquered. We could've stopped. We should've⦠Once one relay was not enough. Once⦠But they were scared. Leadership⦠Colony Command⦠They pushed for answers. They pushed to understand something more than we can understand. I saw⦠I did⦠I saw the readings. I warned them. It was too much. It's not⦠Far as I know⦠Far as anyone could say⦠It's not natural. Not to us. Not to anything we know about the universe. Someone called it an anomalyāthe readings. An anomaly. That's it. But that's too small. Too obvious. It's⦠This⦠Whatever it is⦠Whatever these readings are telling us⦠is more than an irregularity. It's not an error in physics. It's new⦠It's new goddamn physics. Imagine that. I can't. It's everything we pretended wouldn't bite us in the ass. It's the unknown. It's the alien. It's the universe saying, "you're too small and too stupid to be here." It's this planet telling us to "go home." And we built towers to steal the unknown from a planet we thought we owned. And we sent that data to the stars. Because we thought ⦠I guess⦠we thought we could understand itā¦? Control it? It was a resource to mine and manipulate, not a warning. Now the dreams won't stop, and I can still hear Rylla screaming in the static of the signal stacks.

Youāre not in the minority, at least not in this channel.
Hmm my thought was that the data wall was supposed to isolate/protect the colony from the contagion, and that it's a data wall because they recognized that the contagion was not fully biological
Thank you lol, just tired of hearing "THAT WOULD KILL THE WHOLE POINT OF THE GAME" bro I'm not even after the guns and stuff, I just want the lore š©
Yes but I want the lore so theyāre wrong. lol
I had a purple backpack full of lore I lost on outpost last night. Still miffed. I donāt care about the other loot. I want those codex entries!
Gimme a rook type that automatically unlocks codex entries but you get no exp or other loot.
had many people argue (even IN THIS CHANNEL, you weren't here that day, I was like "where is my goat LordRollins? lol) that lore is "maybe the 5th priority on the list" for Bungie and the game" and I almost had an aneurysm
Put a big flashing camera on for a head that gives my location away every time I pick up a codex entry. Idgaf.
I maintain theyāre not wrong, but I want what I want and thatās what I want. š¤·
Who was rylla again?
Certainly they should not, y'know, give anyone gameplay advantages for interacting with a lore mode but otherwise yeah sure whatever
Spouse I assume?
I said that story isn't the FIRST priority but calling it 5th was insulting given what Bungie has put into the series and what they've carefully put into this game, and I'd venture to say taht if Sony had not demanded the revenue stream of a "live service" we probably would have seen a beautiful single player that Marathon truly deserves
You might want other loot like mods. Iāve found prestige mods after fights that describe a special technology that gives a glimpse into just what kind of tech new cascadia was making
Disadvantage the heck out of me, even. Make it an extra challenge mode. Even if I get a collectible a match Iāll still be happy. š
Okay well I don't think Bungie was itching to make a solo game
Saying that the story isn't the first priority is kind of baffling tbh
The entire game is literally built on continuing beloved 30 year old lore and does it extremely well
The world crafting has been pretty phenomenal imo; they could have gone with any IP but theyāre building on something that is both incredibly rich to work with and entirely open for development and so far theyāve been nailing it. 5th priority my [automoddable word]. And so far Iāve seen a lot of NuMarathon carving a distinct path which is cool.
No, I definitely donāt think so. It kinda runs against their modern ethos feels like.
I was only admitting the story isn't the first priority with this game in particular because Sony forced their hand into live-service extraction shooter, so they had to prioritize those aspects. I'm not disagreeing with you, I think our definitions are just different. For me, if a game is "first priority story" that would be a single-player RPG like an Elder Scrolls game or the Witcher or something similar to that.
I think that Bungie indeed wanted to make an extraction shooter, and after seeing Cryo Archives I specifically think they had the idea of "what if Destiny boss raid but also PvP" and then made their dreams a reality. And filled it full of lore because they're Bungie
I very much do not think the live service aspect was forced upon them
I'm not that familiar with Bungie as a company outside of the original Marathon trilogy admittedly, so when I say I think Marathon deserves a single player game that is just my personal opinion based on what I would personally want to play and it's fine if people or if Bungie wants/wanted otherwise.
If Marathon was a single player game I would have got my 20 hours out of it and moved on weeks ago
How do you know Evil sony "forced them" to do anything? The game plays like it was meant to be an extraction shooter from the get go
I don't know if Bungie wanted to split their attention and resources between Destiny (which I only know anything about from what other people have told me) and another live service game
Just because they didn't make a singleplayer campaign doesn't mean some other malicious company "forced" them to make a multiplayer game man
That... Is the purpose of a single player game, so there would be no issue with that.
Why can't people just enjoy the game we got rather than constantly begging it to be something entirely, completely different?
Um... Because we were just talking about how we wanted to be able to get more lore or have modes with gathering lore? That's it? We weren't being hostile about it.
Yeah I just don't have $70 to spend every week on new games that only have 20 hours of content. I much prefer these cost effective live service games that keep me hooked for hundreds/thousands of hours
The game literally throws lore at you like candy, it's hard to do a set of runs without finding some tbh
It's interesting because it seems like Marathon was conceptualized as something pretty close to what we got, as opposed to ARC Raiders which got to a similar kind of game through a totally different path
For the record, until I see evidence otherwise, I also agree with this. It may not be my first choice this time, personally, but their shtick has always been making games that they want to play while also doing something unique or even groundbreaking.
Not as a value judgement, just as a point of interest
Sony didnt force anything, numarathon was extraction shooter from the very beginning
First, there's no guarantee that it would have been $70 or only had 20 hours of content, that's a lot of assumptions. IT would have been a totally different type of game and that's okay. we were only speaking in hypotheticals anyway
it gets harder once you unlock most of it lol
Vision of the game changed over the years, but core remained the same
Also. This diverged from an originally different conversation.
Yeah i have no idea why people attribute the multiplayer/extraction aspect to Sony???
I didn't say that it wasn't an extraction shooter from the beginning? I was just told by others that they didn't initially want to make a game that was live service again but taht's what Sony wanted them to do.
Very odd assumption
Why would you just unthinkingly believe that absurd unsubstantiated statement š
Yeah I think those people told you wrong
It does not take a genius to know that Sony's interest is in constant revenue stream.
Marathonās development began years before the Sony acquisition.
Because the people who told me that had over a decade of experience with Bungie that I didn't have, because my experience with Bungie had a huge gap in it from the 90s until now
Yeah but Marathon years before Sony acquisition wasn't near as close to this.
It wasn't even an extraction shooter.
I think assuming Sony is putting its hand on the scale is a reasonable assumption to arrive at based off of other things that have happened in the industry.
It's usually the deal with single player Sony games. 20 hour campaigns. Maybe 50-60 hours to do all side content. Maybe you can get a grand total of 70 hours if they offer NG+ but that's about it. Usually 70 hours will net you the platinum achievement trophy and you're done. Personally I prefer games that keep me going and going so I can stay inside the world that I enjoy for way longer.
Especially when someone you consider a reliable source is providing said information. I also think trust no one.
They just saw potential on Valorant's model and subsequent extraction genre and wanted to emulate such, development wasn't even supposed to take 6 years.
The people that told you that were completely bullshitting
Too much sudden uproar over at best an honest misstatement and I think thereās just some misunderstanding is all.
And other things Sony has done, so I believed the information I was given by people I've known and been friends with for years. Also excuse my tpos, I'm typing quickly on a new keyboard with keys I'm not used to yet
Bungie does games. Sony does business.
With the way the game is designed and was literally always publicized as an extraction shooter, absolutely not
Durandal is just a chill guy
Games are like a penny in the bottom of the barrel of Sony's technologies.
Are you just here to disagree with everything everyone says and be hostile about it or...
If you havenāt followed any of the development (raises hand) and only hear to what others in your circles say, š¤·.
given how they refuse to make any games. yeah probably
But at this point we don't have any evidence that Marathon was anything other than an extraction shooter during its development
Yeah the only things I heard about its development were negative tabloid things which I tried to ignore because I know "gaming journalism" tends to be just a lot of clickbait slop headlines that dont' amount to anything
And, in fact, Bungie's promotional mini docs have never framed it as anything else
The chillest. Tormenting six year olds for kicks.
No? I think it's a very negative and reductive take to default to assuming anything that isn't a singleplayer campaign was solely due to Sony meddling, it just doesn't seem that way at all. Bungie has always made great multiplayer games
You're big time twisting what I said so I'm just going to ignore you now
Nahhhhhh he never did anything wrong
He was the best guy arouuuund
Ok? You do you š š„
Some people really cannot handle the slightest pushback to their absurd assumptions
š« chat has been active for all of twenty minutes.
My bad. Either way it was trend and money chasing way before Sony bought Bungie, so im pretty sure live service aspect of the game was always their intended vision. Besides, i dont think you can make extraction shooter without live service stuff, it always goes hand in hand
my question is why are we having this discussion in the lore channel
Live Service idea came first, Marathon came after.
Bungie basically just asked - how can we make money steady without having to create a whole new IP - do we have any IP's left in the table - and then they just picked Marathon, they could have picked any other IP in the process. This could've been just Pathways Extraction.
We need more lore to stay on topic. This is just general chat otherwise.
Because people are arguing that they don't think lore was the first priority when making this game š
Bungo, gib lore!
If they really wanted to re-make Marathon, they would just do another single player game.
Thatās explicitly not what they were arguing.
Like, 100% the antithesis to the conversation we were having.
literally what I said but was jumped on for it lol, let's not go there again!
i mean theres plenty of lore
three whole games of it
Yeah but people in here live a bubble of complete lunacy, you just have to ignore them and let numbers do its thing.
Ok, am I misreading this then?? Direct quote from Sheepy: "I was only admitting the story isn't the first priority with this game in particular because Sony forced their hand into live-service extraction shooter,"
90% of people in this channel are completely oblivious of anything even before 2020. Let alone the original games or old Bungo.
š¤·
They needed a live service and they grabbed the quickest shit they could get their hands of for the cheapest amount of investment, so they grabbed an old IP. It doesn't take a lot of business accumen to know that.
So yea they were making weapon mods able to twist time within a fucking gun barrel to change a brrt from firing a burst of five sequential bullets to firing all five bullets at the same time with all the force behind the original burst somehow increasing itself
And then they proceeded to butcher a whole IP.
They fired the only game director who knew about Marathon and gave it to a guy who made roblox copy of counter-strike.
Marathon moment
Marathon moment nothing. Thatās straight up insight into just how advanced new cascadia was getting from studying tciv
That came later as a devolution of the original topic and tbh I was typing a response and didnāt read that.
Regardless, thatās not where we started and I think that itās being partially misinterpreted based off a lack of context from the first half of the conversation.
I will not speak for others, but my impression was that we began discussing how nice it would be to be able to exfil lore easier and how a single player component would benefit that, which turned into some speculation about why it wasnāt inherently included. Yak and I disagreed some, and that when everyone else joined the conversation and we got to where we are.
Hell yea brother
Oh, if we could dump a piece of lore into a DCON that would be sweet, I don't disagree with that at all

So now that we know prestige items have lore, it is time to embrace arachne
Oh the anomaly gadgets theyāve cooked up are wild.
Kill them all. Acquire the information we seek.
Is it any wonder that the UESC wanted to get to TCIV?
š everyone was on the same side all along š
@cinder vine Sorry if I came off aggressive btw, I just don't like when people assume stuff like that about the devs/company without much or any evidence
yknow?
I have to live with the fact I will never see the inside of Cryo and never see the Compiler up close so I just live vicariously through others on videos
He shouldn't have been a weirdo then, but that happened pretty far into development
True, that situation was very unfortunate for the game's publicity
They did well in firing him, but still, game doomed.
š„
Get better, try more, thats the whole point of the genre. Never give up man, you can always achieve your dreams, dont stop chasing them
Oh stop, what season rank are you now?
Idk I like it
Game really shines if you have the right mindset on
This sounds like koolaid but itās the truth.
nnyquils hasn't learned yet
I get that as someone who didnt get to play some games when I was younger, but if you have the game, cryo isnt as bad as you think
Learned what
Don't interact with Fox
Nah that's a doomer take, there's literally no rush to see it, we all improve at our own pace
Oh oop lol
Super true
It takes time sometimes
Nothing wrong with it
I haven't played in a little while because I became demoralized ngl LOL, I don't remember. I think I wasn't even 25 yet cuz it was getting rough trying over adn over to do missions and the only two people I knew who played have pretty different schedules form me. It's not that I lack the skill to play, I'm familiar with shooters and can win in situations where I'm not just jumped on and immediately killed. It's the fact I Was almost always headshot from extremely long distances with no way to respond OR just overpowered by teams with purple/gold shields when we had practically nothing.
hey, I'm reading the Anchorite Provisions bits, is Jasper stranded alone after whatever has happened to the colony or even before the colony started?
I just noticed the ping in #breach-protocol š
After; check the period at the top of the log.
Try more random queue! its got its problems but generally seems pretty good
so we have: pre colony, colony, post colony, present?
Let's see if Half-Life 3 is going to be an extraction shooter.
We can run some time and I can annoy you with all the lesson I've learned. It's not a skills issue, it's a knowledge gap that can be easily filled.
That sounds right but I truthfully don't know.
Marathon is different from other games. It doesn't play like anything I've ever played. There are no free actions. Everything has a cost. It's very tactical, imo. Thinking is as much of it as shooting.
I would appreciate that because the people I play with are big Destiny nerds and I am... not, my shooter experience is a bit different, not Bungie related, and their Bungie experience gives them a leg up on a lot of mechanics and stuff and they're like "didn't you notice or see that?" and I'm like "uhhh no?"
been sitting in a corridor in Outpost for 5 minutes behind a plant, it was awesome
that's the PUBG, sit in the bush and get anxy
Pre-Expedition, Expedition, Colony Era, Post-Colony Era, Present Day
I had to wait about half a match once in the vents to revive my team and I have never been so clenched.
GOAT
Gimme lore that you find cool about marathon 4
Tick poop
yo Gabriel is no chill
I saw it murdering at least two ppl so far
Two? Iām missing one.
how does the one you know die?
Banging on the walls.
right, the anticontamination chamber
there is another one
get yourself some tick milk
Yeah, at leas that's my interpretation
[GABR]: Warning. Flesh necrosis detected and spreading. My apologies, Dr. Luttero. Please remain stationary for auto-scalpel deployment.
He didnt die tho
Iām pretty sure he just lost an arm.
He leaves behind some logs later for the NuCal quest, right?
I thought cause there are no screams that he just died and dropped on the floor
ha NVM he gets locked in a room
still, my dude Gabriel took a bit too much initiative there
No? You download his ID from tick infested house in one of the first NuCal quests if thats what youre referring to
That would be.
His arm was actively dying at an alarming rate; he presumably would have died had Gabriel not intervened and he did implore him to treat his injuries sooner.
If im not forgetting something Luttero only got 3 logs
No youāre right. I misremembered the ID.
are you siding with the clunker?
I for one welcome our AI overlords.
Yeah you can hear him later in the tick milk series where he talks about tick milk production
yeah, thought the order of the logs was not chronological, but they all have been so far
where is my tick milk emote at?
Or sticker
I fucking love that guy lmao. Best idgaf scientist
When the outpost rook stares you down and spams the tick milk emote what will you do
Tick milk em back
So you have chosen death
I've seen the rook, I know I'm already dead
Met a chill rook on outpost yesterday. They were on the roof of a building where we took out a squad and announced themselves, so we told them they could come down when we were done and where the loot was for them to take. Not a lot said but simple.
We finish looting, go up to pinwheel, and not thirty seconds after getting to the top this fool gets the drop on us from behind, shoots first, and then proceed to lose everything we let them have.
I donāt know if he got greedy or forgot about prox chat but it was silly.
rooks are jumpy as hell man
What the hell was in that sample on that MIDA quest in outpost where you get the biological sample out of the crashed UESC ship? It was screaming and EMPing
Also, what do lorechads make of the Unknown Reveries? Durandal talking to splinters of himself heās run over trillions of simulated years?
are all shell users called runners?
Runners are a specific job title
you can be a shell occupant who works in construction or mining or healthcare or just a rich person enjoying immortality
Runners are mercenary shoplifters with no rights
I donāt recall but Iād imagine a contagion or fungal specimen.
A lot of different ideas. That could be one, NuDurandal to a Sāpht, Sāpht to Sāpht.
lore wise are rooks supposed to be free? or do they put them further in debt?
Most people seem to think itās a Sāpht and Durandal. I personally interpret it as two Sāpht. You can see my breakdown here. The chat blew up at the time so the posts are separated by random other conversations.

The codex only really talks about them being base model frames that are typically used for manual labor by the UESC. Runners kit bash them to use them in runs. So technically it's more stolen UESC tech.
That was the plot of episode 1 basically. Imagine you get 20 minutes to find a way to flee an overloaded citdel
my Rook comparison I always use is that runners are like an actual military vehicle and rooks are like a Toyota Hilux with a machinegun bolted to the back
like yeah one of them is probably better at the job but don't discount the Hilux
Rook showing up to Outpost fully covered in "Mark-1 Plumbing" decals because the dealer skimped out on repainting before selling it to a runner
In some of the lore (and arachne of course) it's implied the runners trade knowledge on tech and shell modifications (of course this is meta as the playerbase does) but i swear somewhere they reference discussing the buffs you can use
Why do runners not go 'hollow'?
I think there's an implication that you lose memories and ties to your past self as you die repeatedly
I don't think CyberAcme cares if your "soul" degrades
Iām sure they sell it as a feature if anything.
But why do they not go insane?
Presumably they can, which is what the grounding exercises are for
And if you do, who cares? They'll just replace you or download from a backup that's less crazy for the next "you"
Iād say itās suggested that they do, long term.
Marathon as a franchise is nothing if not consistent about computer programs being capable of insanity lol
Mental degradation seems to have been, and continue to be, a huge concern for digital consciousnesses.
Or hyper sanity
Maybe for AI but that doesnāt seem to be the case for digitized minds.
I also wish we had a term for those.
I'd argue that a digitized human consciousness is basically just a somewhat limited AI functionally
Thatās why we had personality matrixes
To hold the consciousness together
Even as the backend degrades we hold together in a shell
I think that's just something Bungie likes as a story space, which honestly? Fair! It's very cool.
Yep
Mmm Ghost hasn't gone insane so far
Destiny reference
In fact I think Destiny is so far the only Bungie IP without Rampancy as a concept
Rasputin is pretty much considered meta-stable
intersting thanks
Exos undergo memory wipes and āDissociative Exomind Rejection.ā
-# Also meta-stable means rampant.
Ah but the way I see it Exos are like the proto concept for the runners. I wouldnāt be surprised if they were developing the Exo lore and the Marathon writing team liked it and brought it into marathon.
Pure speculation of course on my part.
Im not convinced we aren't AI programmed to think we're human as a motivational thing.
Maybe Iām splitting hairs here but isnāt meta stability the positive end state of rampancy.
Instead being consumed by rampancy the AI stabilises and becomes truly sentient.
Colloquially, as in, fandom, but in lore it is only mentioned once, by Durandal, as a synonym for rampant in reference to both Tycho and himself.
`Tycho's ship has been destroyed. The crater where it annihilated itself on Lh'owon's inner moon is still glowing. There were no survivors. With a focused message laser I burned his epitaph into the surface near the crash site, in letters three hundred meters high: "Fatum Iustum Stultorum."
I confess that I'm not disappointed by Tycho's fall. After all, we can't have too many meta-stable personality constructs gallivanting about the universe in Pfhor attack ships, can we?`
bro was a troll
S'pht'Hra are extinct since the OG Pfhor invasion of Lh'owon, and it seemed to me like K'liah'Narhl were being listed as another clan (I presumed, the compilers formerly of Durandal's network, the OG rebel S'pht, "butchers of the vile ones", because in M2 Durandal's S'pht wanted to call their new ship "K'lia'narl"), but now it seems like 'k'liah'narhl, butchers of the vile ones" is just another honorific for S'pht'Kr, and 'Hra are still listed among the clans even though they're just "hungry ghosts" now.
DiaBD is one of the oldest Marathon scenarios
they will have course referenced the M2 terminal when including that name here... and u can rly see the care they took to make it ambiguous whether there's a reference there to the events that got that name given to durandal's ship
Yes and since the Sāphtākr come from Kālia, it makes sense as a title for them.
A teleporting moon is one of the cooler things in Marathon. I hope it makes an appearance in the future seasons.
Consciousness transfer with continuity is a real murky subject. How would you know itās not just a really good copy like SOMA?
where in the lore does it explain why the wstr 1 shots all runners and seems to be stronger than thors hammer?
it's a shotgun man it's supposed to one shot but you can take 18 shots to the face from an SMG and live!
in the holy scripture of WSTR, proverb 3 section 12
āand hear ye, all who step in within four meters shall feel the wrath of WSTR. get gud u trash cansā
It's a third generation WST model at least, so they're doing something right.
It has been the most powerful close range gun since the 90s
We're just lucky dual-wielding didn't come back
Season 2 prestige mod
I personally like the misriah as far as shotguns go, the M77 feels really nice though
itād be really interesting to see lore on how the classic WST shotgun got phased out by the new one rather than a newer version of the old one.
the lore wonāt waste its time trying to explain it to you ā your primitive mind could never grasp its complex nature
āhaving been roland, achilles beowulf and gilamesh, i can say shotguns are peak.ā the security officer probably
so, do yāall know that the security officer is the guardian btw? at least in a timey-wimey, wibbly wobbly way.
Play Marathon 2 and you will understand
why do the UESC commanders have Obedience Matrices and hold Shell IDs if they're meant as an "informal trophy among mercenaries"? if they're bots, they wouldn't need forced obedience nor sentimental trophies.
putting my crazy hat on, what if commanders are runners who have been hijacked by UESC after being downed too many times and are interred in commander bots. maybe Charter chose to become a faction rep because his mind would be easy to hijack if he kept running...this is turning into a fan fic
I was under the impression that the commanders are piloted by real people
Is it wrong to think Marathon lore is cooler than Halo?
What are the bots doing when they suck us with their tentacles? Is there any lore or explanation on what theyāre doing with that?
they suck out a runnerās consciousness from the shell for later. :3
no idea but i imagine it is a method to try and access internal data to find out where we are coming from and before they can we self destruct. (it seems to always blow me up and ragdoll me around after they do it for too long)
and I figure if it was just to destroy us, they would shoot us instead, so it has to be something else
Sometimes they do shoot me when Iām down, but not usually to kill me. I think you might be onto something though, thereās a quest on Dire Marsh, where some voice tells the bots to try to extract your data or something before you self-destruct.
Idk, I love halo lore but thereās so much uncharted territory in marathon rn that itās really grabbing me
and what they've currently exposed, is only scratching the surface of the original trilogy's lore
(like I've previously mentioned) if a single orange Compiler is a pinnacle-tier boss challenge... imagine what the rest of the S'pht and Pfhor are like...
it was always cooler š
is arachne trying to build their own means of printing shells? everything for their upgrades is parts of shells, which i was like "well ig its just collecting organs all brutal" until i found the weaveworm cluster
warning! warning! old fart is about to start reminiscing!
anyhow back in 1999 I was watching the Macworld keynote, which was a huge presentation by Apple about all the cool stuff they were working on ("one more thing..."). It was a QuickTime stream over the internet, and it was a potato-quality postage stamp stream over my 56K modem. Steve Jobs was on stage and brought on Jason Jones from Bungie to demo their new game
the game was Halo and it had no sound effects whatsoever, because they hadn't done any, but nobody noticed because Marty and Mike came up with that theme music
anyhow, the Microsoft thing happened, it didn't get released for Mac until years and years later, at which point I played the heck out of it, and rage quit after one particular multiplayer game where I was carrying the team and got kicked for team-killing because they were idiots and kept running in front of me. The End
i mean i guess if we are getting skins soon. canāt wait for those
hole text
thatās cool and all⦠not sure what it has to do with marathon lore but good to know
I was there, Gandalfā¦
IDK if this has been discussed, but I am really curious about the celestial bodies around TCIV. Are those its moons? One of them looks huge, big enough that it looks like TCIV is a moon orbiting a gas giant. Was it always like this in the series? According to wikipedia, the real Tau Ceti exoplanets weren't discovered until 2012, well after the original Marathon series, so I assume they just took some creative liberties.
iirc Tau Ceti IV is a moon of a gas giant and is situated in a convenient gap in a planetary ring system. So lots of floaties around us and multiple other moons. I think 4 was the only one that had anything of interest but i also believe the Jjaro tech likely buried here was known about before the marathon launched and it was picked for that not because it was perfect for a new earth
Halo began life as a Marathon sequel and that was still the case at the time of that MacWorld keynote, so that was basically the public debut of a new Marathon game at that point in time
fair enough
Ah, I see. So just a coincidence that the current best candidate for a new Earth is the fourth planet in the Tau Ceti system?
I wouldnāt even say that itās a great candidate as it turns out from the colonists logs. They have to do major terraforming. It doesnāt have a biosphere that properly supports human life, and has no scavengers or predation at all so it really wasnāt actually ideal
but they sure sold the trip like it was
and I know that last bit doesnāt seem major, but that means that thereās no bacteria to break down waste or dead bodies or anything
Oh, sorry, I meant in real life. The fourth planet in the real Tau Ceti system is currently speculated to be habitable or at least a good place to start terraforming.
But those are some interesting details.
TCIV isnāt a moon as far as I am aware, the skybox is just cool.
oh it just has a lot of moons
Uh, I think so. Some things here say it might be a very small gas giant, but signs point to terrestrial.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tau_Ceti_f
`Candidate: Tau Ceti IV
Description: Terrestrial planet in the habitable zone of the G-class star Tau Ceti, 12 LY from Sol
CANDIDATE APPROVED as mission target. Habitability criteria are favorable in at least one major landmass. Atmospheric analysis confirms abundant carbon-based plant life capable of sustaining fauna. This candidate likely requires no long-term terraforming to be agriculturally self-sustaining. A joint panel of UESC physicists[1] and NuCaloric agronomists strongly assert that a more compatible target is unlikely to exist.
===================================================================
[1] See ADDENDUM 1.7.7.1 for further details about likely presence of [REDACTED] in the Tau Ceti system. All further discussion of [REDACTED] must be formally submitted to the Mission Special Projects Committee. `
`Analysis requested by: Reed, Galea
CETI-TEMP: Temperature and emissivity surface images
High priority mineral resources: none detected.
Volcanic activity: none detected.
Projected infrastructure efficiency: moderate to low.[1]
Projected groundwater usage: low.
CETI-SM 1 through 3: Soil moisture and evaporation
Drought vulnerability: very low.
Climate: temperate, humid warm-summer subtype.
Flood risk: moderate. Recommend investing in crop-specific countermeasures or flood-tolerant cultivars.
Extreme weather risk: low. Seasonal storms are comparable to non-cataclysmic weather on Earth.
CETI-IRIS 2: impact event and debris disk monitoring
Projected continental impact events within the next century: 2
Impact event severity: minor. Debris is unlikely to survive Tau Ceti IV's atmosphere.
Civilizational impact risk: Low. Using data from IRIS-1 and 2, Tycho has identified an unexpected gap in the Tau Ceti system's debris disk. Tau Ceti IV orbits the star within this gap.[2]
===================================================================
[1] Bastion: This site is best for agricultural cultivation. Recommend placing military and administrative hub elsewhere.
[2] Tycho: Devoting significant computational effort to find a plausible hypothesis for the debris gap. `
its location within the system is noted as being unusual, its perfectly inside a debris field close to that gas giant
TCIV is within TCās debris disk. ^
So like, the asteroid belt.
At least thatās how I read that.
if thats the case thats a WILD choice for colonization
yeah that sounds right i was thinking too small
yeah it is a lil nutty which feels like this was picked absolutely for⦠other reasons
Those two logs also explain why they chose TCIV; compared to other candidates it was near perfect and required little terraforming.
And also had REDACTED.
yeah it was picked because we knew SOMETHIN Jarro was gonna be there, gotta throw a small city worth of folks at it
But they even calculate that there should only be two ācontinental impact eventsā within a century.
yeah like thatās nothing
TCIV by all intents wasnāt as hostile as what we ended up with from the start.
yeah for how scary its postion was it was incredibly stable inside the debris field
yeah it feels like it was engineered to be in a safe spot
we know jjaro can manipulate gravity
did the fungus show up before or after the phor attack? I heard someonbe say it showed up before but didnt really attack yet
idk the validity of that
so the anomly was already causing problems the moment they stepped of the shi[
they started mixing in local plants into the liquid cheeseburgers and it started to spread
they basically jury rigged machines to violate nucal protections
oh yeahhhh
Speaking as someone who knows very little about the series, maybe we already have evidence that the planet was engineered/altered significantly before humans got there. "The Anomaly" looks like space magic leaking out of the planet or something.
love that corporate negligence followed us all the way to tau ceti
yes that is a pretty safe bet, we likely knew SOMETHING was there, whether we knew about the anomly idk, but Jarro we knew it was there and thats why we raced to the system
my theory, though I know that there are people are doing against it because they seem to believe that it would just be a game over dead end, but I think it could be played a bit more nuanced and interesting.
i believe it is Wārkncacnter energy leaking from a giant jjaro device keeping it asleep. I feel like eventually the story is going to have us go down into the underground caverns and repair this equipment to maintain its rest.
the anomoly is likely a wrknc... wrcn... akcZn- space chaos god yeah
Does the afterlife exist in this universe. In regards to the whispers and visions from the Anomaly
if it does its probably artificial like in halo
hard to tell we never experience it. With all the mystical stuff, I wouldnāt be surprised if there was that aspect but it hardly matters to us as runners
After.
we are never gonna see it
Security incident > anomaly > contagion > š iirc
Maybe gravemind ish too? I know the spores are not a new concept to Marathon but apparently this is the first game exploring the spores in detail
no like I mentioned there are logs of people getting sick before then
yeah the "chase" for an afterlife in this universe is a big bungie favorite theme
idk if there is any confirmation of this
unless you can point it out
I donāt think they were prepping liquid cheeseburgers after getting attacked by aliens and def not after the anomaly
I agree if only because I refuse to change my mind on this, fwiw. š @plucky sierra another tally in wrks favor!
The anomaly wasnāt an instant kill event, nor were the contagion.
They lived and suffered through both for a while, and both got worse over time.
Colony life was OK until the attack, good, some logs even suggest. After that everything went to š© slowly at first, and then very suddenly it seems.

Itās actually really close after asking in the other server
Youāve been polling a lot of folks.
Look at that growing sample size. šŖ
I still feel like the anomaly was the something maybe it started slowly and then there was a sudden change, but I believe the anomaly is 100% related to why all the colonist are now gone. I donāt think they were like abducted by other aliens or something.
honestly, the ones who died from the contagion were probably the lucky ones from what weāre going to learn I feel
There was always weird energy radiating from the planet; the actual outburst of the anomaly would be that sudden change imo. I also agree; the anomaly is likely the reason for the missing colonists or they all turned into fungal zombies.
there are a lot of false or artificial "afterlives" in bungie titles, the Domain and the Flood in Halo represent two different endpoints of that chase, The Traveller in Destiny seems to have some sort of "memory" of "you" that goes "inside the traveller" when a gaurdian dies a final death, Exos and Hive magic(ESCAPE DEATH BY FOLDING SPACE) are also good examples but there is mention of a potential "reflection" or "echo" of conciousness that still exists in "the waves" or out in the "darkness" as referenced by psion culture and others, which might be as close to a "natural afterlife" as you get in these games
iām pretty certain the moment when we get access to the underground map sections, which I am certain we are going to explore eventually since they are talked about multiple times in logs, we will get way more answers. if anything we might find BoBs down there, even if just bodies. could reveal a lot
they were sending bobs down into the caves to survey
I'd like to get torn apart atom by atom by jarro horrors please and thank you
Children born during after the attack would still be over a 100 if Iām not mistaken, and given that they could barely feed themselves, I donāt think reproduction would have been super successful, so I doubt anyone is actually alive anymore, but maybe.
oh yeah they were feeding battleroid and mjolnir parts to the contagion so those zombies are gona be roided out š«
fuckk waves of fungal zombies on tau ceti sounds so fucking coooool
who the hell is bob
born on board
Born On Board
humans not native to earth but instead born en route to tau ceti
ahhhh. like born on board the ship?
yes
yes
gottit
boob
iirc kinda treated like second class citizens compared to those in cryo
had an ai to regulate who was allowed to reproduce
and durandall was sabotoging THAT too
wonder if Marathon Earth's nuke tech is as advanced as Halo's, need to be carrying a football sized havoc nuke on a Thief drone lmao
actually has there even been any lore on the advancement of nuclear warfare or did it all just go to battleroids and runners as soon as we found outhow to do that
`[TRED]: That's another thing I wanted to touch on. Let's talk about the crew members who won't be put into cryosleep. You might've seen the recent MIDA stunt that called them your⦠"sacrificial janitorial team"?
[HLUV]: An incredibly disrespectful and insensitive statement. But CyberAcme does not engage in discourse with terrorist organizations.
[TRED]: But I think there are real concerns here. Some passengers will never make it to Tau Ceti IV. A source told me that some of the non-cryo crew are being selected from the Climate Disaster Relocation Lottery. If they don't really have anywhere else to go, are they just applying because there's no other choice?
[HLUV]: I don't presume to know what people are thinking. Reasons for joining the expedition are deeply personal and complex. But I think most people apply because they want to be a part of something bigger than themselves. `
How do you mean?
iirc Durandall got into the IDEA or another onboard system, in a lore log it mentions how he intentionally gives the go ahead to a family to procreate, talking about how they both were unable to grow or somethin because of limits placed upon them by oithers
it wasnt really fully intentional sabotage, but he did start his subversion of the marathon early
yeah
also iirc Gabriel was the ai in charge of that and they were not supposed to even be active until they were at the colony
i could be misremembering tho
I love durandalls pity?compassion?fondness for humanity
IDEA yeah, but I missed that other entry. I need to go find it. Is that in the Pike logs?
i think?
Other than Icarus iirc, none of the eight colony AI were active en route and only got turned on upon arrival.
And Icarus was more in a half-on, Iām actually a communication protocol, situation I think.
I donāt know how breeding was managed en route if that was Gabrielās job.
I assumed it was a human named Gabriel
the gabriel bit was from a lore vid talking about cryo archive logs iirc trying to find that too
I think this been asked b4, but is there a quick easy resource for pullin all these numarathon lore ntries for readin them up?
gabriel is one of the 8 ai
Yeah but he wasnāt online on the marathon so maybe it was just some human manager
tryna find the lore entries about the family proctreation protocols and im lost as fuck tryna find them lol
thx brah
here this vid goes over everything found in the cryo logs
including pike and a lot of this
talks about the codex entries etc
been watchin this dude and Neph to get my lore fixes
Wonder if weāll get an arg for next season?
I hope so
love the involvment with the community in ARGs, for me thats when a lot of the immersion hits the hardest
feels like we're actually sifting through stolen data and hackin servers n shit
ye
It is cool but then on the other hand the game is by design skewed to appeal to people who donāt really seem to care about the lore or any of the community efforts.
They just wanted to click some heads and get some loot.
people can like multiple things
gotta have both
i enjoy both
Of course people can like multiple things, I enjoy both myself. Itās just an observation.
yeah fo sho, friction ya know, the blending of those two and the connection and balance between story delivery and blowing a runners shit smoove off
Iām currently working on unsanctioned hostilities 4/5 and Iām not sure how Iām going to survive getting into the command wing
I went in with an 8k load out, crew fill only to see my teammates were free kits and I realised it was probably not a good idea to do my quest so I just helped them with theirs.
rip, yeah some parts of this game ive had to accept i aint quite cut out for, whether i can take that and still be engaged time will tell but it balances out to "fun" for now for me personally
for that, honestly best to use LFC and get 2 others on the same mission with good gear
leaving it to chance is gonna make you struggle
you got this i believe in you
Indeed, I just wanted to see what I would get
i am eager for another run at cryo
I wiped 2 squads but didnāt have enough time to get into command wing
So had to bail
Hey all, new to the channel. Had a question that I can't seem to find the answer to anywhere else.
Is there any explanation or lore reason for why the bots finish you off using the tethers?
cerberus AI maybe?
Something to do with trying to capture your consciousness
stealin the data back n shit?
i believe they are trying to download your data to find out who you are and where you are coming from
but you self destruct before they can succeed
Stardust has a better explanation
i swear there is an audio line in game about it
Oh okay. Those were my thoughts too. Thanks for the explanations. Didn't seem to see anything in the codex from what I could find and was curious the exact reason. Makes the most sense to me.
they tryna tickle ou before you leave
Possible I didn't unlock it yet or missed it
ONI might say something or Orion on one of the early missions
I donāt mean a codex log, i just mean like a line Oni says mid mission
I still havenāt found a video on YT will all the cutscenes stitched together
If there is one thing about Bungie is they know how to story build and every detail is intentional or has a reason behind it. I'm loving this game to death so far. It's refreshing
Basically bots giving you the suck is no bueno
Destiny players may beg to differ
They are good at lore though
World building etc
The best stories of Destiny 1 were buried in the codex. The narrative was a mess at the start
Never got too into Destiny. By the time I had hopped on I had already missed out on a lot of the trials or event w/e and felt out of the loop so never persued it.
Yeah, bungie did screw themselves by destroying the new player experience
I really hope they donāt vault S1 contracts so new players get to experience it
I'm having a feeling Marathon might have the same fate story wise for new players down the road? Iirc I heard they are planning the story to expand and change based on our actions and feedback each season?
Hopefully not, if the do remove the contracts they need to make a sort of āpreviously on marathonā type video
They'll need to keep contracts the same for all players whatever they do
Agree
I suspect weāll be doing brand new contracts in S2
My guess is they'll adjust some of the contracts in future seasons but not do brand new ones
One thing I'm hoping for is more enemy factions in later seasons. Possibly the Pfhor or something from the original series. I think it'd be interesting to see them again.
one hundred perecnt agree on that
The story is supposed to advance each season so the context for what weāre doing might change.
we might be gettin zombie of some kind next season
Everyone thinks the zombies are coming
I'm hoping not zombies. I'm sick of everything having zombies š
Thereās some logic to zombies plus theyāre usually a fairly fun enemy type in games
No? Iād hope for more story contracts. Or did I misunderstand?
its probably fungal zombies ala the flood
š§
I could get behind a marathon universe Flood
The last of us
I'd hope they move the tuff forward, need to hear the factions react to events as they happen
The OG, flood, if you will. š§
The flood before the flood.
Next weāll be talking about tidesā¦
But based on the premise of the story and we are basically trying to uncover why the original colonists all vanished I'd think it would make sense it'd be the cause of one of the alien factions, no? Who else would have the ability?
that'd be mighty interesting if this infection is the same one we were supposed to fight in the old marathon games
Really making waves with this one
The Sāpht could have released their virus I can never spell which does turn folks into fungal zombies.
So every other extraction shooter I've seen has added or adjusted story missions after a wipe but never fully scrapped all the current story missions and made entirely new ones
It was a removed enemy type from M2 iirc.
really fighting the waves as the waves fight us with this one
Sāctālacātr I think
Oh gotcha. No, not entirely new ones, I donāt think. Additive.
I havenāt trained spell check yet to know that well enough. š
I wouldn't expect them to entirely scrap the S1 story missions and have an new set of S2 missions
I just hope we donāt have to do season 1 missions a second time to reach season 2 story
Some of them are very burdensome
Oh you absolutely will
With their tied to the codex that would either lock people out or be a lot of work for them imo.
I donāt think so. The priority contracts are tied to the codex; I think by extension those might end up persisting.
I HOPE they dont scrap it all like a destiny season thatd be a real quick method to get to the "should have got on at the start" problem destiny got
Season 1 to 2 sounds doable but you have to realize that at like season 10 thatās not a feasible option
Ranks and all that yeah, but not story content. IMO thatād would make me leave 100%.
They might adjust them to be less burdensome but I foresee the chain of story missions to just get longer as time goes on
yeah some "onboarding missions" that get you up to speed would be great
If any of the races were to appear or have a deep lore connection to this game I'd bet it would be the Jjarro. I mean Bungie even placed a easter egg text in the original series saying the Jjarro were on Tau Ceti. So if any of them I think it'd be them making an appearance
Iām not spending hours of my life running back forth between bio research and quarantine again just to get the same voice lines
You won't have to 100% every story mission every season or anything. You only have to advance a chain of contracts if there's a new one at the end
They should be optional by season
runner, please complete the necrotic sample quest three more times
Yes you do
The priority contracts are distinct story lines from beginning to end
Why?
For story?
Sure but if you've already done the entire story chain and they don't add to the end of it you wouldn't have to do that chain in the new season
You've already got those codex entries
I think weāre thinking the same thing in different terms.
You think theyāre not gonna add new contracts to a story line? Thatās the point of the prio contracts
Theyāll add different ones but I doubt they just wonāt address a plot line for a whole season
RUN/HIDE isnāt going anywhere and in fact might get added on to; your progress within RUN/HIDE wonāt reset, but you might go from being ādoneā to not.
?
Yeah even arc added new story stuff with different objectives
Your progress within RUN/HIDE will get reset with the wipe
Yes but you have to finish run/hide before you reach any season 2 contracts and thatās unacceptable
But your codex entry if you finish RUN/HIDE won't
Oh no we donāt agree then. š that would be awful imo. I pray not.
They wonāt solve any of the problems they have with destiny story being unapproachable
This is how extraction shooter wipes work
This game doesnāt filter the mold perfectly though, does it? Maybe theyāre tweaking that?
Maybe this is hopium.
They might tweak it, but from what they've told us I doubt it
But I cannot see being a new player in season ten if thatās how theyāre handling story. Youāll literally never catch up.
How they have worked. There also isnāt a ES as narrative driven as this one yet
They specifically said that contracts will reset except for the introduction: faction contracts
i mean it is the same thing they did for destiny
They won't be adding full 1/5 chains of missions to the end of every faction every season
i donāt expect Bungie to suddenly change how they operate just because itās a new game
They did. š«
Have bungie released information on what the wipes look like
I might have missed it
Would you mind linking it?
Theyāve said they intend to ensure this game is more approachable even in later seasons
that doesnāt really mean anything until we see it
more approachable could be a codex entry catching you up
`These resets include everyoneās gear, contract progression, faction progression, and player level.
Youāll keep your achievements and ways to express yourself. This includes cosmetics (earned and paid), titles, and other rewards you earn by playing and reaching milestones each season. Your Codex progression also carries over, as unburying the secrets of Tau Ceti takes time.
A few other things carry over too, such as your liaison contract progression; no need to unlock the factions every season.`
Liaison contracts would be your prio contract right?
Introductory.
no the āintroducingā ones
Son of a gun
Priority Contracts are not mentioned or are included under ācontracts.ā
like āIntroducing: Sekiguchiā
Suddenly feeling a lot less optimistic about S2
thatās extraction shooters
Apparently I'm the one who actually reads Bungie news
youāll get used to it
I read it, I just chose to forget what I didnāt like. š
There are some real advantages to wipes
I have no issue with gear, faction wipes, level wipes etc
Iām open to wipes, Iām just curious to see how thatāll apply to story. If I truly need to repeat the same quests over and over just to get to the new content Iām going to probably leave, because I cannot even currently finish them all with my play time.
Story progression is where I take issue
I mean Tarkov wipes and you still start every contract over from the beginning to basically get all the story each time but with added extra things each season. Though with a 3 month wipe timeframe that would be a brutal loop in a small window
Like I said, if there isn't a new priority contract at the end of a chain you don't have to do it again
You already have that codex entry
And they're not going to be adding 1/5 chains to the end of every faction every 3 months
I shall not dwell on this any longer, que sera, sera.
Sure, but currently vendors offer us their quests in order. Unless that changes youāre going to have to repeat that progression to get to the next quest in sequence, no?
Maybe, or they'll add new chains in parallel
I assume theyāll add new chains for the peeps that did them already
Nien
So maybe at some point there will be two starting NuCal chains and if you finish either of them you'll unlock the lvl 10 NuCal chain
Etc etc
Hmm hopefully
Who knows
This is why I was saying they're not going to be building entirely new quest chains on top of what's there every season
I gotcha now. Hopefully getting some coffee at work will make me a better reader.
And if you absolutely hate RUN/HIDE, well, you only have to do it once for the codec
You have to do it every time for whatever is after
Maybe
Hopefully less painful sekgen quests lol
Like, we'll see if there are level 15 chains next season but I kinda doubt it
We can pray.
Honestly the amount of dire quests got my goat
MIDA has level 20 strings
To whom?
The sword in the sky
The big D
Youāll need to do RUN/HIDE to even try TRUTH/LIES
The blessed bovine
you have to think about it more like this youāre not gonna be doing the same priority quest each season theyāre gonna be completely different so think of each season itās almost a new game. Everyone gets to start off on the fresh start which youāre gonna want because otherwise youād get a new season with new people joining going immediately against people with like gold shields, and some of the best weapons, including the stuff from Cryo, having everyone on an even playing field will be fine and youāll find that you build up your factions, a lot faster than you think. Unless youāre an absolute Completionist, I wouldnāt even worry about finishing all of them just play the game and you will naturally level up for ones that you are most aligned with because they all reward you experience based on various activities through the game.
Iām gonna throw my tablets on the ground go up the mountain to get another set if so
Different one, this one is cryo frozen, not gold
I will turn around this tablet
Wagyu A5?
Might be golden fluid to keep the cow safe at least?
Nope, just a frozen cow
Do you think the cow has freezer burn at this point?
You realize subroutines are in the codex?
I donāt think a cow with freezer burn is blessed
People will be farming compilers weekend one
Sounds like the opposite
^ can just go hobble into the compiler with grey shields
yeah with what gear lmao
ā
My team and their trusty v11 punches
You can loot it on the way there cryo has such good loot
People know the ways to get good gear
Like rush lvl 25 farm pinwheel
Gear is the easiest thing to come by in this game
Thatās pretty true.
Keys are really the sticking point at the moment I think
also I guarantee you season two itās not gonna be cryo archive
Salvage is the pain in the butt imo
it will be a different section of Marathon
Iād agree. This or salvage.
Still have yet to see a cryo 4 6 or 7
guarenteed
Theyāll need to do like a few vaults for the DNA access and thatās it
4 is from burn warden I think
6 is rare
I think I have one but I forget which.
7 is a āDNA accessā from any vault
Iām told youāll see one in 600 hours of play
Iāve done 1-3 and have a 5 somewhere
Iāll loose them with anyone who wants. š
Still have no clue how people have a mill in credits
Who knows cryo archive might be made easier as part of the story
Just farming cryo lol?
just sell everything always
Iām curious for night time dire tho should be interesting
The loot may also be toned down to allow normies like me to see it
zero to hero free kit and just sell and free kit again
Maybe running from bio to quarantine will be safer this time
