#

would be really funny if we the players are these runner's brain and our actual lives are just a simulation for the runners to keep them from going insane while they're not deployed in a shell

I closed my eyes recently, entered a dream within seconds it felt, of a planet sized meteor casually falling towards Earth in the distance, with a view of it from my backyard. Not the first one I've had like this, but this was different in many ways. One difference is the shockwave hit a second after impact. Sent me soaring for about half a second then I woke up.

Just things to wonder about

Well, mostly.

Whether out of boredom or such.

shrewd maple
#

I'm a sucker in general for space related things, which is likely why i like the aesthetic / lore of the game

still matrix
#

I think my brain finds it gets entertainment out of it.

zinc dagger
#

Don’t runners have to pay for their shells though? or is it a give us your brain for free immortal shell situation ?

shrewd maple
#

@still matrix Imagine your dream was a snippet of a version of you from another universe experience a world ending event

still matrix
#

Yeah I've played with that thought.

#

Maybe that version is merging with me.

#

And when I go, I'll merge with another me.

From a dream.

Anything new with the lore. I havent been updated since the terminals activated

shrewd maple
#

If you think about the "time" before you were born and how existence simply existed before you, it is weird because it feels familiar. I wonder how it would feel to a human that is not aware about history at all.

Perhaps it's more animalistic

id imagine since the corps seems to recycle everything including the human body, wouldnt be crazy to imagine that they used people asleep in cryo or that were dead but with a brain intact for the shells

#

like maybe im reaching because of the cinematic but they seem to manipulate their memories too so how would they know if they actually wanted to be in a shell or not

#

my mind is in too much soma mentality

modern ember
#

are all the people from the frist game still frozen in that new area

whole chasm
#

I feel like immortality made possible by storing or transferring someone's mind might not actually be that great. Sure, their personality and memories persist, but is anything left of the actual original person? Or does each copy/transfer just THINK they are the original and when they die their instance is over?

heady tendon

ā€œMad is the Swordā€ from the volume II soundtrack has to be a reference to Durandal, right?

You can't copy a soul

hallow stag
#

Depends what you mean with soul

crimson cosmos
#

a soul is an artifact of an old collective misunderstanding of the purpose of a mind

hallow stag
#

If you don't hold the religious view of soul, you can absolutely copy one

carmine zephyr
#

An uploaded consciousness isn't you it's a copy of "you"

subtle oracle
#

im so glad they separated the arg for yall and the args sake tbh

hallow stag

It wouldn't matter, it is in no way less real than me

subtle oracle

hallow stag

They would have a soul as much as I do

crimson cosmos
#

its like saying you and future you and you and past you, or you and alternate dimension you are the same, the difference is experience and continuity.

carmine zephyr
#

it would be a different person

crimson cosmos
hallow stag
#

On that I agree, but it wouldn't be soulless

#

But this conversation is pointless if we don't define "soul" first

carmine zephyr
#

unless something explicitly states that when transferring consciousness keeps the original alive somewhere in the lore, im assuming when the copy is made the original dies

hallow stag
#

Or it may work like in Soma, I don't think we know for sure as now

modern ember
crimson cosmos
#

ya transmat is usually copy delete to maintain definitional continuity, and "same" is maintained by relativity. my fav are scifi that play on this. when the delete function doesnt happen
podcast "Sayer" is a good one

carmine zephyr
#

what I meant by "soul" is your very coinciousness in this moment that allows you to be aware of who and where you are. imagine a teleporter that when you use it, instead of transporting you, it makes a copy of you while destroying the original, and prints the copy in the place you are supposed to be "teleporting" to. the copy will think it went successfully and will remember being in one spot and then the next, but may also remember the moments up until the death, so the copy would be aware that they are not the original.

Scary stuff to be responsible for medical science while faced with mortality and an increasing lack of hope. They were forced to save whatever small comforts they could while dealing with an impossible task. Darius, the nurturing gardener who constantly put others before himself was taken offline, starting to lose hope himself, and heading into the melancholic first stage of rampancy. The Contagion may be influenced or created by the Anomaly if the results are impossible to study and replicate for such a long period of time.

The Marathon expedition was doomed. And if Tau Ceti IV truly is connected to or contained W'rkncacnter, it was doomed before it even began.

where exactly do we go when we exfil? earth? another ship in orbit of tciv?

rose yarrow
calm snow
#

well yeah but what about our stuff? and our shells? like that stuff is still physical matter it needs to be stored somewhere

turbid drum
rose yarrow
#

The guns and such probably go to where the shells are created before being sent to the surface while the rest of our good like salvage are prepped to be sent back to the sol system from what I can tell.

rose yarrow
calm snow
#

if you look back to the cinematic there seems to be like some sort of facility that prints out the shells
the vandal in the video also says "I got a big contract waiting for me down there"

turbid drum
#

its probably important to make a distinction between our runner and runners in general

calm snow
#

if it was a ship though we would probably know about it and i cant imagine were being teleported from Sol so this is honestly quite the lore pickle

elfin ermine
#

is "violent one" W'rkncacnter or our runners?

elfin ermine
turbid drum
#

sekgen makes the shells but its reasonable to imagine if they didnt someone else would

rose yarrow
#

I am pretty sure we are in orbit somewhere. I can’t imagine where though since we haven’t expressly been told where yet? I would be stoked if one of the codex entries makes note of it though. Perhaps if we are somewhere on the marathon we will find where we are stored? But then we would be vulnerable to so much that I can’t realistically see it that way. Besides they make mention of us having traveled here for the express purpose of exploiting what has become of cascadia

stable pollen
calm snow
#

There is definitely some sort of hub somewhere that we’re coming from

inner schooner
turbid drum

its only if you get killed the consciousness gets shunted

elfin ermine
elfin ermine

i wonder if people save their souls or is it just the cyberpunk soulkiller situation

turbid drum
#

im not sure exactly what point you're making an argument for or against

elfin ermine
rose yarrow
elfin ermine
#

what is exactly a consciousness in our runner? is it a copy of our mind stored in the shell that just comes back to the original source when we extract?

rose yarrow
#

It is our actual consciousness rather than a copy that shares what happened when we return to the source

elfin ermine
stable pollen
#

From what I gathered, when you die, you still have memory of the death and the ones before. It’s just overtime your memory gets foggy eventually forgetting your core memories. Like our identities. In the cinematic vandal says to get the exercise over with so she can complete some more contracts, she also remembers her mom, but not herself.

elfin ermine
stable pollen
#

Kind of like how with AI the longer the conversation goes the more it forgets and hallucinates. Which I think is why oni tries to remind them in the cinematic.

elfin ermine
rose yarrow
#

Getting murdered is pretty traumatic as well being an addition to that. It is very clear the shells let you experience all senses as if it were a real body.

#

Probably contributes massively to the memory loss over time

elfin ermine
#

imagine your an introvert person and then you get snapped alive into a popular person's body, would you still spend your time like the guy did?

stable pollen
#

The shells were tailored to each person though I don’t think they get to choose which shell they are. Or am I reading that wrong?

livid lion
elfin ermine
keen plank
# sage lark Though it seems Gaius was kinda avoiding if it affects humans directly

Gaius is genial, polite, and represents an organization that clearly cares about humanity while being incredibly sinister. There's a reason his eyes are red. Key thing to remember is that it's in NuCaloric's best interest to not only recoup their investment costs, but have as many people literally consuming their food and agricultural products as possible.

sage lark
#

ok but what does that have to do with what I said

stable pollen
elfin ermine
keen plank
#

Gaius is very interested in figuring out what happened and the Dire Marsh/NuCaloloric quest line shows that while there's a lot he and his organization don't know, he's also likely obfuscating things to an extent. Though nowhere near the same level as say, Mida and SekGen.

#

The Mida grafitti all over Tau Ceti VI is...concening. Especially considering it's around Outpost.

elfin ermine

turbid drum
keen plank
# elfin ermine were normal people sent to tau ceti? or just scientists?

Between 24,000 and 30,000 people, with the first number being a newer estimate. There were all sorts of candidates chosen, from scientists and engineers to doctors, military leaders, and systems technicians.

As ONI notes, they were focused on expansion rather than survival and the colony seemed to grow pretty steadily.

A lot of people are BoBs, people born on board the ship. And while most die, Durandel does manage to save the remainder.

We know so far that UESC is trying to take control of it and they are in a shadow war with traxus

There is also implication that UESC had something to do with the Colony being completly wiped out. They didn't want witnesses to whatever went down

rose yarrow

I dont know much about the OG marathon compared to halo, but you couldn't really fracture an AI in halo which shared a LOT with marathon in terms of these elements within the story. You could trap their personality matrix in places though like what happened to Mendicant Bias on delta halo after he betrayed his creators

Its hidden in the codex files you unlock

It talks a lot in the lore about Durandal dividing himself to take over different systems

rose yarrow

First off it was Leela that sent a message, and doesnt matter Sol didnt receive it since we dont even know the Pfhor were here

cold zenith
timber basin
#

Do we consider marathon 3 in these discussions? Seems like with the new game they’re gonna go over some old story beats anyway to reintroduce people to the marathon story: which felt like halo; and which felt a bit like destiny as well. Probably the smoothest way for them to do that will be through alternate reality stuff from marathon 3. Especially since Durandal is trying to escape the entropy of the universe seems like he’s gonna be extra dimensional in some way through this narrative, or use us to get there like in the old games.

visual lynx

not necessarily. some S'pht were allies of Durandal, but the S'pht as a whole aren't necessarily allies of humans as a whole.

sage lark
neat kernel
young temple
#

I just hope after Archive vault 7 we know if we are in a completely new timeline or if this fits into the story before Durandal made the timeline all wacky

cold zenith
timber basin
#

If this is their ā€œdark towerā€ entry that’s connecting all their ip together then durandal will probably be our through-line that connects to whatever they’re trying to do since his story was all about escaping entropy, so if we are or are not the final timeline doesn’t really matter since it seems like Durandal is all that matters we could be timeline whatever it just matters that he’s poking around here. Bungie also uses the meta aspect of us playing the character in their games being a form of ā€œdestinyā€ and Durandal comments on it at the end of 3 I think, so we are just their tools to do stuff. How he talks about bobs sums it up where he basically says their gross but he’s stuck using humans for now since they work and it’s what’s on hand.

timber basin
visual lynx
#

everyone gets that wrong

cold zenith
#

I saw a theory saying the marathon was carrying artifacts from pathway into darkness.

young temple
#

There is also the possibilty that at this point he has been through so many different timelines and "seen it all" and now just wants to figure out how the active the Jjaro superweapon 1000 fold and destroy everything that exsists so he can finally "Escape"

#

I like that Incubus. That would imply they lied and never destroyed any of them and instead used them to advance out technology to what it is now

visual lynx

maybe the colorful crystal Artifacts in new marathon are related to the colorful Crystal artifacts from pid

timber basin
young temple
#

Yea my theory on their stories as a whole is they are all parallel universes to our own.

timber basin
# cold zenith they mention the jarro directly

Yeah totally it’s just one of those things that’s not ā€œofficialā€ but that word gets tossed around so much it ruins the fun. I was legit upset at destiny being released and not marathon so I’m just happy there’s some far flung way they could be connected and I’ve just been playing marathon my whole life

cold zenith
#

what if the anomalies has to do with the jarro cause they were at tau cetti.

cold zenith

And also to clarify, it's kinda obvious, Earth is in all 3 games, I just meant they aren't just seperate, they all exist together and maybe we happen to cross over at some point? Who knows

Maybe the Jjarro are the Forerunners and vise/versa

which explains the fungus

cold zenith
young temple
#

One thing we do know for sure is whatever they actually found on Tau Ceti IV when they began studying it was far too important to let that information leak back to Earth. So whatever it is must be crazy

cold zenith
young temple
#

Very true lol

pliant elm
#

Fungus will be key in the whole story.

past gull
# rotund prairie Like the baseline of the story

basically people have colonised the Moon and Mars, but due to resource drain, we’ve kind of fallen on hard times.
because of that a deep-space colonisation mission was launched, the UESC Marathon.
it established a colony on Tau Ceti IV, but soon after it’s been attacked by alien slavers called the Pfhor.
long story short, the main guy prevented the Pfhor from successfully taking over the Marathon, and sent a message to Earth that the situation is dire.
meanwhile, there’s another B-Story that kind of becomes very important, about an alien super-AI eldritch being, that’s contained within an actual sun, and wants to get out ASAP.
also, one of the three AIs on board of the Marathon became Rampant (pretty much gained true sentience and self-awareness) and wanted to become God.

cold zenith
#

and finding 4 different species of aliens also crazy

cold zenith
pliant elm
#

I mean, the whole first scene of the new Marathon trailer, is literally a runner stomping a fungus, that's an old storyboard technique when you want to demonstrate subtely dominance over something - in this case, corporations over the fungus.

Sidenote I love the lore of this game and I'm stoked to see the discussion, ILY all! Keep digging and enjoying the game!

cold zenith
cold zenith
pliant elm
#

Not probably, it is a Pfhor bioweapon.

#

I have the old Marathon 2 concept art books and manuals, and in a lot of them were the Fungus Pfhor, which was a fungus throwing pfhor, which never made it into the original game.

cold zenith
#

they did have the spht slave dude who was a mutatn

pliant elm
#

These fungus are actually native for Lh'owon and the Bobs who were in Lh'owon got infected by it when exploring S'pht relics

#

It was one of the weapons they used against the old clans

cold zenith
#

oooo lwk makes sense

young temple
#

I like the idea they developed a fungus that infects AI. It is said the colony AI "Slowly degraded" as well as parts of the colony having strange degredation to it

cold zenith
#

cause the bobs went back to tau cetti

#

and they prob infected the whole planet

pliant elm
#

Sorry, its actually the other way around.

#

The S'pht used it against the Pfhor.

young temple
#

The thing that is throwing me off about the role of the S'pht in the story is that damn effigy in the trailer. Someone made that and that's either reverence or fear.

cold zenith
#

they are worshiping the spht cause they are a greater race

pliant elm
#

That's how Marathon 2 ends.

young temple
#

Yea that's what I figure so far, plus there is the fact we know the S'pht helped the Battleroids on board once they were "purified"

pliant elm
#

When Robert Blake and the Bob's take a Pfhor spaceship, we don't know where they go, but this fungal infection makes the dead resurrect and go look for new hosts.

#

He even ends the game saying ā€œThe dead walk again; we cannot wait.ā€

cold zenith
#

I think they went back to tau

#

then some left to earth

young temple

I kinda love that they are going back to OG ideas and making them a thing (if this is the case of course)

Seems like a pretty strong case this could be the direction they are taking

#

pfhor at tau whats so special about tau.

pliant elm
#

We don't know what happened. That story has never been told, it could very well be that the fungal weapon was actually a Pfhor bioweapon that got lost during the attack in Tau Ceti IV.

#

So its plausible that you discover that there's still a source of corruption from one of these lost Pfhor vessels in TC4

neat kernel
young temple
#

I wanna go back and look now, is it said the tri zeem (yes I know that's wrong spelling) only makes Stars go supernova? Maybe they found an energy on Tau Ceti they can exploit that is stronger?

cold zenith
#

what if tau has a W'rkncacnter or a dead one

young temple
#

THAT would be cool af ngl

cold zenith

and that could explain the anomalies

and expline the ais going crazy 2

young temple
#

Would also explain why the Jjaro were there

#

They go where the W'rkncacnter go

cold zenith
#

yes

pliant elm
#

It's very unlikely that Wrk's are in Tau Ceti system. The reason Pfhor went to Tau Ceti was because it was Durandal who called them.

cold zenith
#

it lwk fits in the story 2

neat kernel
#

Considering wrkn are described as imprisoned in stars or suns? I dont remember, but it might explain a lot if a wrkn is trapped there i mean why was one in the earth pyramidto begin with

pliant elm
#

But it's too big/large of an entity to be in this game, it might have some relevant microplot in the game, but its just to set the lore in.

#

I think here its going to be more planet-side related.

young temple
#

Maybe at least a piece? That is what kicked off the whole thing to begin with, a piece fell to Earth killing the Dinosaurs

cold zenith

yes it could be a peice or a baby one

The whole multiverse thing from 3 I think will come into play but Durandal for sure finished at least one timeline, the final screen takes place at the final moment of reality and he kind of just acknowledged that he never understood us as a player’s role in his universe at the end of 3. He didn’t get why or what exactly we did even at the end of that timeline. Whatever version of reality from marathon 3 we are in we are probably going to be that ā€œdestinyā€ he talks about at the end. The whole Durandal storyline was the only real developing story everything else felt reactionary to his agenda in the old games even to the point where we just do what he says cause there’s not another option and he becomes the quest. It’s always felt to me the old games, and then halo and destiny after in different ways, we’re essentially about consciousness and the limits of what human minds can conceptualize in the form of the AI going rampant which basically just means the AI can sense the boundaries of its own mind, like if you could literally not imagine in a certain way and hit a literal physical wall in your mind and it makes them go crazy, conceivably would make human minds that are also digitized go crazy. But then there’s the version after rampancy where they supposedly transcend that and turn stable but in game no one can make it work in a lab and no one can conceptualize what that is like I would even say the ending of 3 could be him not being able to deal with that up to the last moment of reality he basically just sums it all up for our perspective ā€œoutside of his universeā€ as the player perspective, or maybe he did figure out something and him saying that stuff is literally for us as the players and he’s off on some new adventure having transcended ā€œthe endā€. Going off of what’s in the games we don’t hear about the other races transcending reality in the way Durandal wants so I don’t know that we can assume anyone else has done it, but we only have that final screen on 3.

Once upon a time, a castle stood atop a lonely peak. The castle belonged to a cardinal, whose lofty title demanded red stone, red furnishings, and red banners. During pale sunsets, the castle Leered bloody and bright from the mountainside.
A thief crept through the castle's silent red halls. Bony fingers clutched his prize: a thin canvas bag containing a ruby reliquary.
He thought not of the contents rattling within nor the legends of a haunting curse, only the hunger gripping his guts. The thief snuck toward the cellar, trying to ignore the voice haunting his steps.

The reliquary screeched in protest, and a piercing wail answered throughout the castle. But the thief was already free, tumbling from the tunnel into the frigid night air. With the wail still echoing in his ears, he ran for the road as fast as his legs would carry him.
He did not see the trail of ghostly blood oozing through the canvas and splattering the ground. Nor did he feel ephemeral flesh tearing as the distance from the castle became too great to span.
The thief ran, praying that what he'd stolen was a jeweled box and nothing more.

[HBLA]: It's reacting with the atmosphere-becoming more opaque. No change, or at least no other noticeable changes-no thickening or clotting. Looks like-um-480 milliliters.
[SDOR]: The esophagus leads from the mouth to the, I really don't want to call it a crop, but the food storage area. That isn't any better...
[HBLA]: Are those lungs?
[SDOR]: Well, it's not the caeca, those are lower, but without a diaphragm- Remove them, get them to bioscience for a more thorough Look.
[SDOR]: The crop is, of course, connected to the proventriculus. So, this is most likely the gastric caeca. Which leads directly to the mid gut. The mesenteron, where nutrient absorption would take place. Though this one is oddly pale. I've seen nine of these opened up and the mid gut is typically a dark maroon or purple color. I've only ever seen one other one this pale.
[HBLA]: Could be injury related, maybe? You saw them in the field, so to say, right?
[SDOR]: Yeah. Could be. Could be injury related.
[SDOR] I want to note there is a relatively thick layer of striated muscle all throughout here. Thicker myosin layers overlapping thinner actin filaments, ranging between 10 to 13 millimeters. There are what appear to be quite a few fat bodies distributed throughout the thorax.

[SDOR]: There are regular ligament structures attached to all the internal organs. Performing the same function as the peritoneum or mesentery. And here we have the ventriculus, the ileum, the colon. Or I'm assuming we do. We'll know more once bioscience has had some time with them. There's nothing resembling the parietal pleura or
mediastinal, though the anchor points to the myosin layer are... really interesting.
[HBLA]: It's too bad we don't have access to any living specimens.

Their nervous system... Systems! Their entire biological make-up is akin to a complex- a network of connections and... and drivers, servers, operating mechanics... it's all so technical and precise...
[SORE]: We see, clearly, upon examination that it is all organic... The "cloak," the "orbus"... it's all... But how...?
[SORE]: The product of bioengineering we can't grasp? Surely. But what if it's more?
[SORE]: The current ruling theory is bioengineering- forced, disciplined, and directed evolution. But then, again... By whose hand? Or even... Is "who" a lazy assumption? Maybe we should be asking, "by what?" The mind reels at the thought. Mine, anyway.
[SORE]: Or... Are they simply the byproduct of evolution in their wholly unique ecosystem, and, if so, would we over time... millennia... equal even a fraction of their complexity?

@pliant granite I think that comes from the lore that when an AI goes rampant it will exponentially expand into all available systems which is why a smaller scale AI dies out quickly from being discovered and shut dow. There’s an indication in logs about the potential next step after rampancy but it’s only theorized. Durandal potentially evened emotionally out over the eons of time so I don’t think we would consider him rampant at the end of 3 so potentially having enough ā€œspaceā€ to expand into during rampancy calms them down. But even then he wasn’t omnipotent he still talks about not knowing what was up with our character.

Of note from M1

The science staff had difficulty finding a good specimen of the S'pht, or compiler, to autopsy. The only specimen autopsied was almost completely destroyed, but it was obvious that the compilers are cyborgs of some kind. The biological component of the compiler is so closely linked to the machine that it could never survive without it. The compiler's actual body is very small, resembling closely a mammalian brain, except that the neurons are much finer and far more complex.

These logs reflect this description of the events

some of these autopsies sound like pfhor, the ones with yellow hemolymph and arthropod anatomy, but the cloak and orb and intricate nervous systems bioengineered are definitely spht

but I am bothered because in M2 we see images of spht without their cloaks and such, suggesting that those are not part of their anatomy but armor or clothing, and sphtkr defenders wear different armor entirely, with BTS images showing the same uncloaked spht bodies inside of them, and inside of the cloaks too.

In my opinion

  1. "Downloading your consciousness" isn't a thing. You'd die in the transition to data and that's not how the human brain works, so that's out for me and if someone tells me that they're going to try I'm saying no and running very far away. Its like claiming a Star Trek transporter makes sense in a hard science way- "realistically" you'd die when you're disassembled and then you'd be cloned when you're reassembled somewhere else if their explanation is taken at face value. Its just a plot convenience that sci fi transporters/teleporters don't kill people.

  2. Even if you could, you're risking the entire runner every time they go down to the planet to some mishap if the failsafes don't trigger. VR is safer.

  3. You'd be creating AI every single time you clone someone's consciousness into a body, and last time I checked we don't need to risk more rampant AIs running around. One is plenty for a planetary network as it is if left unchecked.

That's my take

Based on the lore, runner shells are 3D-printed in orbit of Tau Ceti using advanced "WeaveWorm" and "Neural Sync" technologies. While the exact timing of the first shell, often referred to in Marathon lore, isn't fully detailed in the snippets, the technology for these shells was developed after the Marathon (a ship) left, as part of a 300-year advancement in technology.
The shell printing, or "bioprinting," is a 3D process that allows for the creation of runner bodies for digital consciousness, often associated with corporations like Sekiguchi Genetics. These, along with the "moths" used in the loading screen, are part of the Marathon’s, or simply "the game's," world.
