My theory on the angular design of the equipment and bright colors is so they're easier to design and recognize by not only the colonists but the AI systems... both the sentient ones and the non-sentient robot "AI" systems. Also they're probably (can't verify) easier to construct on some kind of a 3D printing + machine mill process.
