where do you wanna start 💀
I just wanna know the lore about the new game
what part of it
Sorry im just a need about lore
there's like so much lol I need a starting point
tau ceti IV
Who are we? I’ve heard “colonists”
couple light years out, roughly a century-long trip
the marathon project had colonist in the UESC marathon go across from sol to tau ceti to colonize tciv and failed
Ok i know the game is pretty intense but watching any video on marathon's page will tell you about the baseline of the game
the premise is the corps wanting their cuts back so they hire us mercs to do the job for them since they signed a peace treaty with the UESC and they're entrenched into the failed colony already
If you're going to ask questions like "where are we" and "who are we" you can get a lot of answers to basics like that from the gameplay overview videos bungie has put out
For actual marathon lore, there are good vids out there as well that explain it.
JaketheAlright has a great playlist that's easy to digest
Nu(new) Marathon builds off the foundations of OGMarathon. But in this game all we really know is: something happened to the Marathon ship and the colony on tau ceti iv, and a bunch of companies want to recoup lost assets and hire mercs called runners to do this. Runners use biosynthetic bodies called shells to run "safely" on the planet without having to put their physical body on the line. We don't know where our physical body is as a runner, but our consciousness is uploaded into the shell
I don't think there is an explanation as to "where are we," in terms of where are the runners coming from/back to, is that right?
The Alpha Intro Cinematic says "Runners arrived in the Tau Ceti System" It also shows Runners coming from one common shape hovering Tau Ceti IV, being transmaterialized to multiple different places in Tau Ceti IV. The Reveal Cinematic shows a series of interconnected chambers where bodies are printed, they are stacked in a square or rectangle, like a hollow skycraper (possibly a part of a space station.) I do not think we know whether the Runner's actual body still exists, either...
I am confused about aspects of the lore, is the marathon in this game the same one in the first?
Hi I have a question about the short movie maybe a bit late but why vandal and assassin have the same picture when the « do you recognize this child » sequence in the movie
It's a routine question made from the ai
It's like the main plot point behind Blade Runner 2049
In the case of the short, I believe it's used to show the runners pretty much lost their human memory
Not knowing for certain if that is a photo of themselves
Didn’t see the movie what the plot to compare ?
It also might be saying that it's the same runner, but in a different shell.
Can't be the same runner
Shells aren't runner specific.
So the runner who was in a Vandal-
Why not?
It’s wierd because they kill each other so how the conscious can split up?
Human like androids have become independent of their original directives and a special police force is created to hunt them down (I think it's been a while)
As we see both of them in the field
That's the thing-
An Assassin Shell died and a Vandal Shell died.
Afterward, we see an Assassin Shell.
I'm under the impression that the runner in the Vandal Shell just loaded into an Assassin Shell after they died.
Ignore it, it was an example to make things easier but it doesn't matter if you haven't watched the film
If they forget their past why do the need to look like human they can all look like rook so ? I was guessing the they was looking like human for not lost their mind to totally change to someting different ?
Like assassin is based on a male body and like thief a female so why create genra for robot
But we see them both on the field at the same moment, fighting eachother, unless you are saying the shells in the fields aren't the same we see in the capsules
Rook is also a generally worse shell than the others.
As well as Sekiguuchi just having a very "holier than thou" sort of approach to their creations.
"Why be you, when you can be better?"
Just being a basic robot like Rook doesn't seem much better than being human.
But it would just be overcomplicating for the sake it imo
That is what I'm saying.
2 Runners, only one of which we see in the capsule.
Like getting destroyed by a OTP and thinking you have to try that character
Exactly!
I don't think that's how the short is supposed to be read but you do you
We can also assume the Vandal Runner isn't very capable considering the amount of debt they are likely in.
Because shells are used by humans, and humans have preferences
It may also be due to compatibility, if it's something the lore considers
Like, a shell that resembles your body accurately being easier to control
But this is speculation
For not creating a human like rampancy ?
It was my first guess
I think that's a bit of a stretch considering what we know
No because the assassin find the picture on vandal shell dead body and take it so it’s really 2 different runner
But it's not like the shells have genitalia or anything, so in the end it's just a slightly different shape, it being masculine or feminine I don't think matters much
I don't think it's brought up anywhere, but I don't think it's that wild to at least say that transferring a human consciousness into a completely inhuman body or leaving it disembodied for long periods of time might be detrimental to the runner's mental health
Funnily enough, we can see this in real life.
Sensory deprivation for extended periods of time is really bad for people.
Yeah that the point but I was just overthinking if there an explaination for there design in the lore but really is juste game design lmao
I haven't seen the short in a bit, but doesn't that assassin also get killed? That'd mean neither of them have that specific picture and the assassin at the end of the short is getting a different copy of the photo
That's correct.
the Assassin gets sniped no?
The thing is, what does it matter if it's a different copy or not?
It's still the same picture.
Yeah but the face that assassin make when he take the picture is wierd all short long he act like a true killing machine everything calculated but when he take the picture he seem shocked
I think that the purpose either way is to show how the personality of runners gets heavily diluted as they come back again and again, and that honestly works both ways
I think it should also be pointed out that the Assassin Shell we see at the end, no matter on who the Runner inside it is, is not the Assassin we see on Tau Ceti.
Why ?
Different patterns on the face.
It’s maybe skin like the vandal change tshirt
It’s create by sekigushi so juste maybe an other skin print maybe
Definitely, no matter the Runner.
The lore of this game hype me so much I can’t stop checking every detail bro
I need him now
Agreed.
The fact the the cryo archive is not here from the beginning make me the most longing
Well I wouldn't wanna go straight there from the beginning anyway
Gotta prep for it
Yeah, it might be an end-of-season inclusion
3 maps for most of a season is... Daunting.
If it's true that Cryo's going to be similar to Destiny raids then we will need the prep time
Yeah sure but I think end of season is far everyone will have good stuff but I like the fact of run for the truth like corpo paying runner to learn about the marathon so first come first to know the truth
And we'll be clashing with other Runners too...
Who cares about dying if I can see the compiler during my last moments
Exactly
Watching that burnt peanut stream video, they were struggling to even open the pinwheel vault on the outpost map, and cryo is supposed to be even more of a puzzle
I respect that a lot
Nooooo I dont want that no boring boss too long
THIS
See the Compiler?
Nah, I wanna blow that S'pht up.
ya girl has been waiting 30 years to see that next-gen compiler, LFG!!!
Making the name of their species sound like a slur is crazy work 😭
They'll be hell...
But possible.
Moreso because insane players always find a way, instead of it being intended.
How many teams are allowed in a raid area? And will you guys be cooperative???
Wouldn't be the first time Bungie makes content meant to be impossible to do by yourself only for people to speedrun it solo
No I generally won't be cooperative
I've no idea how many teams will be allowed, but I do wonder if the higher stakes of having all your best gear on will make players more hesitant to shoot on sight
Shoot on sight 90% of the time, at least
Orr... Encourage them to be more aggressive to take enemy gear
I'm assuming conditions will get harsher as you dive deeper into the archives
So the plan is to spill blood, behold the compiler, die
So I'd guess strong players will want to clear other teams asap
Unless cooperation is forced to open the archives, pretty much
That's what I'd expect.
That would be...
Annoying.
Cuz later you'd need to either fight while weakened (risky), or share the treasure (distasteful.)
I have been certificated by the SekGen, can anybody tell me more about my faction?
You make the worms that make the people.
Said people run on CyAc, are built on Traxus materials, and eat NuCal products.
Ok so I’m still kind of out of the loop. Are the runner shells still called Biomata or something else now?
They're now just called "Shells" as far as I can tell.
Ah

It would add another layer of complexity, which I wouldn't mind, but in any case I think the archives will be doable by a single squad
Otherwise you could just softlock
I dunno about softlock, you can probably dip out at any point, but yeah.
Uh true I didn't think about leaving
Maybe I finish vault 5 and don't feel confident going for the next two, so I extract.
I get to keep my assumedly good loot, even if I don't make it to the end.
Then I get to go at the Archive again, but this time with the new stuff.
The one thing I'm confused on in cryo is how the hell PvP will work if it's linear vaults. Surely all teams will spawn in the same room?? The first vault no?
Thanks you wise @cursive portal i will embrace my new role in the world with Sekiguchi Genetics and 知恵と指導の言葉に感謝します。次の指示を待ちます。
Excellent question.
No way of knowing till we see the map.
Maybe it's a series of rings going from the outside in.
Maybe it's a series of floors, going up or down to one another.
Maybe there's a central area of which vaults are arranged around.
Etc.
You can find even more by navigating the Karnemir website.
https://marathon.karnemir.com/marathon/intercepts/sekiguchi/index
(The first entry is the one I already gave you.)
Be sure to also check out the emails and media.
(The media is just cool.)
I simultaneously hope and hope it’s not a w’rkcjfjeinff that’s causing the mayhem in the colony
It would be cool to see them use some new idea, but I hope it’s not anticlimactic
The Jjaro came to me in my capsule.
I have 10 days to bring a nuke into the deepest part of the Cryo-Archive.
any marathon lore must-see videos? i have not played the og trilogy but want to know more. already seen mandalore gaming videos plus pathaways into darkness one
Biomata is the technology, shells are the different models afaik
Like there are biomata of other animals like the cat
But shells are the biomata that player minds inhabit
Oh, that's my bad.
Mandalore covers the old lore really well.
The only question is, do you want knowledge about the corporations before you play, or do you want to learn while you play?
What did pathways into darkness connect to marathon?
Pathways into Darkness has the President of the US be contacted by a Jjaro, to be tasked with taking down a W'rkncacnter.
...There's also probably some other connections too that I forget.
i want to know more about the corporations
My suggestion would then be Bungie's videos, as well as the Karnemir archive https://marathon.karnemir.com/.
let me check
Most YouTube content on the subject is either repeating Bungie or making stuff up (which I fell victim to.)
ive also seen "the entire history of marathon" by jake the alright, is that one good?
It is, yeah.
ok thanks
So is there any lore between when Mida wasn’t a terrorist and now?
A great deal, how familiar are you with Strauss?
can you give a link to bungie's videos or are they the ones in the marathon youtube channel?
Aside from Strauss they went kinda underground for a while bc they were outlawed and whatnot. Though it seems they had some sort of resurgence closer to 2800s
What is my dad
Excellent question
I have a theory
Most the colonists are still asleep in cryo is the first one.
Secondly we're gonna end up facing battle roids sooner or later and they are gonna clap cheeks
You guys think Durandal may appear in the story later down the line?
local roids already guarding vault 2 and deeper before colony failure or reinforcements?
(this is testing if you read the UESC memoranda)
Durandal is in the trailers
👍
Im thinking new gen Borg's more likely. If we do end up running into any surviving local roids there's no chance of winning
However since the original group of battleroids was concealed it's possible there's more
I don't see any reason strauss would lie about more roids than the 10 mjolnirs he sneaked onto the marathon if we're supposed to be in the know in the old trilogy since we're one of the 10
plus they took all the mjolnirs off the final memorandum draft and assumed there's surviving life on the colony
we'd quite literally get atomized against any mjolnir gen I think if one's enough to kill a compiler with relative ease lol
and that's vault 7's raid boss
Could be a fun area denial mechanic, lile when there’s more maps Maybe, you could have one area locked at a time cause „Mjolnir Active“ in the area or smth.?
by no roids I mean none on the equanimity or surrounding vessels
and it'd be roughly a century-long journey for the UESC to send a squad of mjolnirs from sol to anywhere near here
not to say it's impossible but it'd be A Good Long While™
but it would be funny when the game launches and then everybody wishing to see mjolnirs immediately backtracking when they already get their heads bashed in my local patrols 💀
on top of potential risks btw, automated vessel means total loss in case of any pre-flight tampering and sabotage, with onboard personnel you're making absolutely sure nobody is anywhere pro-anti-gov with no conditioning to keep them that way throughout the century-long flight
and mjolnirs are Very Fucking Expensive
...Destroyer is wearing Mjolnir though.
But I guess because he's a Shell and not a Cyborg he doesn't have the Jjaro in him?
It's not said to be an imitation, it's Mjolnir.
Let me find the clip.
they did say version of
for how capitalist the marathonverse is there's still likely military limitations imposed by law
doubt sekgen would casually weave a mjolnir set out like this
Destroyer shell is from mjonir
So maybe it's not about the armour?
Maybe "Mjolnir Recon 54" was the cover title for our Battleroid, not the title for Battleroids?
mjolnir gens are marked as "Mk [_]"s
recon 54's likely smth very specific
and the officer was a mjolnir IV
they planned to send up to mjolnir IXs on the second memorandum draft before the council dropped the whole mida on marathon tirade
and on top of this they only specified a "futuristic version" of the mjolnir armor so it can also be likely sekgen went different ways with how the UESC planned future mjolnir gens
downsizing the actual armor pieces to making compartments more compact and all that
the sekgen mjolnir might not match any official UESC mjolnir gen past gen IV
mjolnir is not armor in the Marathon universe
on top of ^
cuz mjolnir is the battleroid name not the armor name
so destroyer's practically wearing an imitation with almost none of the power
Or the reboot is changing things
the SO in OG Marathon just threw on the standard powered battle armor in the closet on the Mirata
so it's not weird at all that lots of others would wear the same thing
referring to the look the SO's known for in the old trilogy in the vidoc then I suppose
when they were talking about a futuristic version of the mjolnir look
If that were the case it would be weird that it’s called that, they’d just say the destroyers has „standard battle armor“ right?
Maybe they’re changing it to refer to armor to invoke halo familiarity
for abbreviation's sake when describing design choices ig
<Durandal> Cycle the Mirata cabin’s inner door
“-One minute to cabin decompression.”
“Goddamn it!” You slam your fist in frustration onto the control board, leaving a dent. In a panic, you tear off your seat restraints and leap for the rear of the shuttle cabin, “Forty seconds to Cabin Decompression.” You are rushing now, but you know that you have plenty of time.
You fly in zero gravity towards the locker holding your Battle Armor. You haven’t worn it since you had to hunt down some Chockisens which were harassing the work teams on the fringe of the colony, almost three years ago…
nuMarathon better tell us what Chockisens are
my headcanon is they are the PiD -like monsters from Marathon Zero
minecraft analogue horror ass aliens 😭
new cascadia be damned if they're anywhere on tau ceti
These century long journeys assume humanity doesn't acquire FTL travel. Between the first game and where we are now they figured out faster than light communications. So theoretically if there's any derelict Pfhor ship wrecks or even since compilers were their tech slaves if they communicated with one of them then you could see the development of FTL thanks to the expedition
the memoranda were typed out as proposals for tau ceti rescue and relief which is pretty recent
It seems that the current implication is that even new gen mjolnir and cyborgs pale in comparison to the battleroids since the original battleroids had a heavy stigma around their deployment and when they did deploy they were too effective in many ways
That's true. There's also the potential that the recovery vessel wasn't the only one sent too. There's nothing to suggest it was or that it wasn't yet so it may be a window they are leaving open for content.
Or even the potential Durandal visits earth in his captive ship in the near future.
Though I'll have to crack into more of the lore after release because I imagine they'll drip feed us something interesting in regards to that
we'll have to assume since the equanimity's the only one listed
but that's also excluding other potential support vessels
could also assume kingfisher class is pretty high up continuing said logic
other vessels are probably in an addendum not shown or known to us
fighting oguns and harpes would be interesting enough tho I bet
if we even get to raid the equanimity at all
Games got so much lore potential. I hope current bungie appreciates the density of the narrative they're working with
Durandal gave Earth warp capable missiles, maybe they figured out how to make warp capable ships from there.
is that M2 lore?
Yeah.
I uhhhh
I think we can discount that since m.inf partially nullified the entirety of M2 lol
7 timelines is a doozy
Yeah it is... Wow.
durandal still merged with thoth so it's not impossible they gave humans ftl still but like
yk
Yeah, and it feels less likely when Durandal isn't flying around at his own whimsy in Boomer.
Got the collectors
Gotta say, everything is high enough quality (except the electrical part of the statue) but I'm particularly blown away by the Assassin-themed fleshlight
I wonder if it's lore accurate
...
the most appropriate opportunity to mpreg a guy
The lore is putty rn
i would argue that with infinity they became putty lol. considering there's like 7 timelines
actually I'm not too sure if durandal actually gave or even got ftl with the merge
gotta read up on m.inf again some time
So-
Even actions Durandal took before reaching the S'pht home system got "retconned?"
It’s unclear what is and isn’t
Hello. Getting into the lore since it's the first time I find the story actually compelling in an xtr shooter. Are there any hints, clues or any info at all regarding the colony after the events of OG trilogy? From what I understand, the Pfhor came back and wiped them out. But the colony somehow still existed after those events as seen in the cinematic and suffered other disasters that eventually wiped them out? Did the survivors rebuild and repopulate or is it timeline fuckery?
Either they retconned it or something happened due to marathon infinity, because the nuking of the colony was specifically said to happen in marathon 2, which is timeline 1. They could just say oh well some of them actually survived, or maybe it didn’t happen in this timeline
So it's basically still a big mystery. The alt timeline stuff could work pretty well in this setting and world. Usually when it's done in media it feels like a cop out, but it suits Marathon I feel.
well we're here now and most things are intact and the nuke and pave option didn't go through
save to say it didn't happen
or delayed to the far future
Yeah. Idk things like that are unfortunately inevitable when reviving an ip
"SMUG INTELLECTUAL. Formerly-rampant human-coded AI with a sense of humor seeks bipedal oxygen-breathing cyborg for serious relationship in the galactic core. I've got cool guns if you like to break stuff. No yuppies. MRa2572 (5/23).
SLEEPING BEAUTY. Long-deactivated extraterrestrial personality construct in search of gullible carbon-based cyborg (< 20% machine) to confuse, irritate and teleport randomly around an abandoned desert planet in the core. All answered. MRa268' (5/30).
GOD'S GIFT TO NEURAL NETS. Traitorous extremely-rampant reprogrammed human AI with no sense of humor seeks elusive, heroic cyborg of uncertain manufacture (you know who you are) for mindgames and long walks in hard vacuum. MRa2261 (5/16)
DAMSEL IN DISTRESS. Captured and partially-disassembled human-coded AI trapped on alien homeworld seeks succor from a tall, dark and handsome cyborg with big guns. Let my rescue be the basis of a lasting relationship. MRa4451 (5/23)."
These have got to be my favourite lines across the games.
I also think sometimes retcon stuff like that is just trying to smooth out weird story options that didn't make full sense, now that it's been 30 years since marathon originally dropped. Some stuff is just going to be revamped or changed slightly for a modern era. I don't think it's a huge change from a story perspective to not pave and nuke tau ceti iv, and i bet they'll have a lore explanation for it in the game
https://tauceti.world/profiling
Found this little quizz online that determines your "corpo" allegiance. Man I love science fiction and I hope they keep building on the lore eventhough there is no campaign in the game
my take is thats what the anomoly and disease are
for how crazy bungie writes its stories it's still pretty rooted in actual science and logic so I expect some very good explanations to certain "retconned" things
I like that take
like they still "destroyed" the colony, but more in a bioweapon that lost control type way
If they go with alt timeline and want to tie in the og storyline it will have to be revealed to players by Durandal.
Bioweapons are more of a S'pht thing...
I mean I’m sure it’s plausible to say humanity just developed ftl in the 2800s. Could’ve been something else but I don’t think it’d be wild to assume that
exactly, given that the disease effects both fauna, flora and AI....
i just thought that the engines were better than 300 years ago
One of the things I liked the most about the lore is the attention to certain details
Like the whole Mars disruption due to the time/cost needed for resource transportation
the century post-memorandum you mean?
I mean they are bc the equanimity was gonna have like 3x the sustained speed, but that was also in the early 2800s. For sci fi I don’t think it’s implausible to justify them making ftl in 80-90y
Wdym post memorandum
Yeah they are v good at lore details
drafts for the tau ceti SNR and relief mission
still stated to be a century-long journey
The Equanimity?
so unless they discovered ftl during that century then idk
Oh yeah those were in 2795, and the equanimity was launched in the early 2800s
yeah the equanimity
And now it’s 2893
would make sense
It's way quicker than the first one though, and the corpos caught up even faster
But still not ftl levels of speed
My only thought about them not having been given ftl by Durandal or something in the 2800s is mainly bc I feel like high up corpos would know about stuff like the pfhor and more about what happened to the colony befor arriving to tau ceti
Yeah it’s like 0.12c assuming a constant speed
Which is damn fast tho
in a world without ftl they could also use those comms relays they planned per light year distance to perform grav slingshots if they make them big enough to do so
if they discovered pocket grav that is
I mean maybe but I can’t imagine they’re very big considering the equanimity had to carry all of them
yeahhh
And if they have gravity manipulation then they can essentially make ftl travel bc warp drives
I think they do have ftl comms at least
Or some form of communication
Given that earth received a signal from tau ceti maybe a couple years after the first game
is the null tansmitter supposed to dm you?
Yeah
when i msg it back saying what why did it open my internet browser and open like 1,000 discord looking like i got a virus
and when i closed my internetbrowser it kept re opening it and making more and more
lagit right after i msg it back \
That sounds like you have a virus from something else
from what i wasnt doing anything else i just got a virus randomly
i mean my computers fine rn but it defenitly started happening rright after i msg the bot and thats the only thing i was dong on my pc at the time
or it was after i click the image in the dm or somethign but it was forshure that
Well it’s just a regular discord bot
where can I send images? I believe I softlocked in the last part of marathon Infinity
im at the panel where you're supposed to place the chip you get from Durandal after as you kill it, but I dont have said chip among the items anymore, dunno when it vanished
nvm im stupid
Is there much info on Arachne lore as of right now or are they still pretty unknown?
Arachne peaks my interest the most im also curious about their lore~
I wonder how new they are in universe as their culture seems to centre on death and rebirth of runners though biomata
Is it also confirmed that by the time we will be playing in game the companies will have FTL, currently listening to the old arg breakdown by Jake and trying to piece stuff together I'm not clear on
I'm wondering how they have access to runner shells too
Yeah, even Charter looks like a shell, and is holding a runners heart it seems
Actually now that I say that how do most of the companies have shell access? From where I'm at lore wise I only understand Sek and traxus having shells
I would guess sekgen pawn the "printers" or the worms out to buyers
As in the short film ONI the cyac AI tells vandal the debt she owes to sekgen
Bio silk is expensive yo
Or maybe there's a black market and the blueprints got stolen on a black market
Seems like sekgen and cyac have deals with all the factions when it comes to shells and software
Finished Infinity
Probably the one I liked the least level design wise
Still a good game though
How long did it take for you to finish it?
Anyone else just get a message from Null transmitter?
yeh
I think they do but not for organic matter like humans
Durandal hijacked a Pfhor ship when TCIV was attacked
and the Pfhor had FTL
Durandal also returned to Earth with his new ship to warn humanity about the Pfhor threat
Don't think there's any indication of FTL tech from Humanity
I was too
There is at least as of 2888
I think so yes bc they decide to go to tau ceti in 2888, and they arrive in 2893, covering a 12ly distance it’s gotta be ftl
Thanks y'all!
NITW pfp, love it
🏏
That was in the marathon 2 timeline. He could’ve still done it in timeline 7 but I’m not sure he did, otherwise I think the corps with their hands in government pockets would know more about what happened to tau ceti
is there a good video for a breakdown of each faction?
I think Jake the alright has vids on them, ik he has stuff about the arg lore which talked a lot about Traxus, sekiguchi, MIDA, and the UESC
Tau ceti ain't real nope
wtf 6 hours?? It took me 12
How much did you use guides?
I had a question about the cataclysm that occurs in the short film. Does it related to the first games ? People vomiting and exploding in colors and stuff, thought it was a virus first (released by the Pfhor) but I have no idea actually
there's an easter egg in the first game that said the jjaro were at Tau Ceti IV
so they maybe left some crazy tech on the planet
maybe the colonists found some jjaro tech and tried to experimenting with it to disastrous results
Also, What's the deal with the compiler in cyro archive, I thought they all left with Durandal
Just when I got stuck for too much time on some portion
I did play all games at the easiest difficulty too
Time reason and modern boomer shooters just being so much better for challenging runs on high difficulties (cultic)
I wanted to finish the trilogy before the server slam
I just watched some videos on the mararhon story and lore, but i dont realise how UESC ai robots are the enemy?
Didnt UESC lead the marathon mission and its my understanding that they are one of the factions
the marathon colony is now a military restricted zone and the runners are tresspassers
So maybe one came back.
but that's my point, why would just one come back to the marathon?
I don't think it would be just one.
I'm hoping they become an actual enemy.
maybe Durandal sent that one as scout to prepare for his arrival
Durandal is also back
Supposedly
the uesc bots are our enemy because we are mercs contracted by corps to go down and take assets that the uesc thinks we should not be taking lmao.
The pfhor should eventually make an appearance as well at some point, again supposedly
we are not the good guys in this game, and neither really is the factions and neither really is uesc
If the game survives long enough I'd bet we will see all the 3 main marathon ais from the trilogy
Even Leela?
Oh, whoops, wrong reply.
In any case.
Even Leela?
We know where she ended up, and it seems... Hard to move around.
We know it eventually succeeds and takes over
Tycho'd likely come alongside the Pfhor-
Hell he'll probably be the Pfhor.
"While Tau Ceti was being nuked down to bedrock in 2794, Pfhor scientists disassembled and removed the AI Leela from the Marathon, loading her aboard a vessel bound for the Pfhor homeworld. But the ship fell into the hands of a Nar privateer between jumps at Beta Naxos, and was never seen by the Pfhor again.
Thinking the cargo little more than scrap, the Nar captain sold the Pfhor ship, Leela and all, to a Vylae merchant. The subsequent crash of the Vylae FTL network when Leela was reassembled and reactivated is still legendary in the annals of rampancy, and the Vylae have long since accepted that they will never expunge her from their fifteen-world network."
That doesn't sound mobile.
Or cooperative.
I don't see how it couldn't be mobile
But who knows, maybe she never left the Marathon in this case.
As cooperative, I didn't mean that Leela will come with the new species as allies
Just like the colony wasn't nuked.
Just that an eventual update could have both
"Will never expunge her from their fifteen-world network."
I dunno, something about that just feels... Entrenched.
Have we seen AIs exist across multiple instances?
We have-
Tycho.
We may also meet different Pfhor factions
imagine phfor as a faction
I mean, it's not like Leela needs to bring the network to the Marathon, could just use a relay, or as you said other instances like Tycho
My dream is a phfor shell
Unlikely, but it'd be cool.
I also expect Phfor to be redesigned to some extent
The pfhor hunters would work quite well with minimal touches, like the compilers
Most other pfhors I think would need some heavier change to fit properly, but maybe I'm wrong
Maybe, I'm just thinking that if they didn't change too much, it'd feel really alien.
My thoughts on the Phfor as a future faction you work for is unlikely, but I would think of an interesting idea where, if the lore of the og trilogy are mostly the same and did canonically happen in the past of this new game, the S'pht could be a possible faction to side with, considering their freedom and revolution in the first game thanks to the security officer and Durandal messing with the Phfor. They look to have some sort of role in this game, as we have seen multiple times in promotional material of at least one Compiler floating about, so the idea of leftover S'pht patrolling Tau Ceti IV and soon contacting whatever S'pht are left alive in the galaxy to ask for our help would be pretty cool.
has anyone checked out the updated tauceti.world website? they added shell previews
sounds like recon shares a VA with Judy Alvarez from Cyberpunk 2077, which is nice to see
Time off will make me GOD
It's confirmed that the compiler is an enemy in the Cryo archives
If we ever end up working with either races, it will probably happen through the ais though, in the trilogy you do work for Tycho (most of time forcefully, as with Durandal)
fair enough. Guess it could be a hostile S'pht clan or some remnant of the Phfor that survived the battle against the cyborgs and security officer. I'm not sure, but I guess more info on these guys will be shared by the full release and/or the ensuing seasons that will play out
after all, the cryo-archives are still a major point in the game which 1: Takes place on the titular UESC Marathon, and 2: Has been shown to have Compilers/S'pht floating about
Also, feel free to take my words with a grain of salt, I'm still a bit new to all of the lore and Marathon as a whole (been scared to even look at what happens in Infinity, lol)
I have been suspecting that it may not be so clear who are the good guys in the Pfhor-S'pht war since I think the S'pht attacked Tau Ceti in 2812, and the Pfhor and human megacorps may see each other as valuable trading partners, especially because biomata may be a game-changer in the galactic slave trade, best of both worlds between robots (cheap and mass produced) and organic slaves (no hyperintelligent rampant AI).
just because they will never get her our of their network doesn't mean she is confined to their network
where we last left Tycho in the final Infinity timeline, he was in shit with / imprisoned by the Pfhor for trying to subvert their command, and then he had been freed by the SO, so he may be a free agent not with them anymore
Guess so. The game so far shows plenty of gray zones in morality between the current factions, so whatever seems to happen with the Phfor and the S'pht may end up being less of a "Good vs. Evil" situation and more of a "Who is the greater evil and who joins with what?" situation
the factions first heard about shit going down at Tau Ceti, 12ly away, in 2888, and then mounted a mission to arrive there by 2893, 5 years later. FTL must be involved.
in the M2 timeline; but seemingly not in this timeline
In all honesty, I think the timeline may have split off at some point from M2, perhaps as a result of...whatever happened in Infinity. Look, all I know about that game is there are multiple timelines happening at once there and all of the time travel fuckery could have led to a Rebuild of Evangelion-type situation, where many of the same events occurred like in the og timeline (save for a few stylistic changes) up until a certain point where things split off from the norm
are people here gonna do detective work during the slam or just goblin gameplay
I'mma try both
mostly playing to see if I actually wanna pay for the full game on release, but I won't mind getting more into the lore this way
late to this discussion but I think we should assume the battleroids are dead. There is evidence of this in the game.
iirc you can loot a random scrap item which is a battleroid brain or whatever
in the final Infinity timeline the other nine were taken along with the SO and "translated to Pfhor slave tanks" but most did not survive
Agreed that the OG ones are likely gone
finding a live battleroid from the og colony seems too cool for them not to do it at some point in the future
It'd be brutal but so freaking fun
Okay someone tell me all about the pink cat. I can't find a wiki page or anything
Imagine if at some point they add a secret event which is like
A 0.1% chance for the MC battleroid from the trilogy to get teleported on the map
As an hostile, obviously
I know it's stupid
But how cool would it be?
0.1% would be too high, though
Yes that one. Give me the LORE
as in, youd see clips of that on the first day
neko
That is a name at least
Bingus
I think that would be sick, I do think it’s feasible we could see mark ix roids pop up later
So I'll just take it that the cat has no lore or backstory. Could have said that from the beginning.
Hehe no we just like to meme
It's just the mandatory cute mascot that everything has nowadays
Actually the cat might have tons. The one we see is named KAAL-1. She’s a sekiguchi biomata, so she has the actual consciousness of a cat but migrated to a cat shell. I think they made these before the human ones but I’m not sure.
She specifically started exhibiting significantly increased intelligence after her migration, unnaturally high intelligence for a cat. Maybe it’s bc of shells or mb anomalous stuff
Maybe it will have some lore
But for all intents and purposes that’s Bingus, the NuCal deity
Maybe there's Durandal in it
bingus
She's the cat version of Archie! Cat exo :D
Hey I was just watching the reveal cinematic short again, did anyone ever realize that both void and glitch pick up the same picture that’s supposed to be them as a child?
Aw now I'm glad the survey told me I'm team calories xD
On burger
Yeah. Personally I think they just reused an asset for ease, considering void pulled the same photo off of glitch after she got shot (I think). If it was actually the same in world i assume he’d remember, but memory could be messed upon death anyway.
Or it could be some spooky psychological experiment or something
Join us at bingus corp
Yeah I kinda thought the same thing but a part of me would hope that a trailer like that wouldn’t have glossed over something that seemed that important🤷♂️
I will do my job as an anarchist and commit anarchy
Yeah I agree. I also feel like they would’ve had the time to make another photo asset considering all that work
Well obviously the glitch swapped runner too void after being clapped
Ohhhh shit you’ve got a point
I didn’t even think about that
I don't think that's what happened
In all seriousness I don’t think that’s the case though, bc that cinematic was made when it was still a hero shooter, so glitch would always be glitch, void would always be void, etc
Idk when in development exactly, but the December vidoc and later showed them walking it back and making them just models produced by sekiguchi. The creative director also tweeted about it in like January
I see I see
Maybe they were fiddling around with the idea already though🤷♂️
I feel like they would just say that’s the case if someone could actually ask them
But even when it was still explicitly heroes I doubt there would be an in world answer as to why we, the player, can swap shells just bc it wouldn’t really make sense with the established lore that void and glitch etc. have concrete identities and pasts. It was probably just “oh yeah well in universe you wouldn’t but it’s a game so you can swap”
This is all speculation though technically
dont know much about the lore tbh is cyberacme good or bad lol??
theyre basically just the windows of the marathon universe
I mean they’re all bad to an extent. Most are corps there for profit
that makes sense
Yeah, CyberAcme space windows. Traxus is space blackrock lowkey. NuCal is space McDonald’s/walmart, sekiguchi is space pfizer, MIDA are terrorists and Arachne are death cult
lowkey gathered that from their “everything runs on cyac or nothing runs” mantra lol
damn i didnt get the cool faction lol. mida and arachne seem pretty badass
I mean u can always swap
yeah no one really has beef with space windows because literally everything runs on cyac software, and it would be largely detrimental to corps if their OS just disappeared one day
tru, but my personality test said my interests align with cyac so this is home ig lol
Yeah we don’t produce beef, just delicious grey beef substitute
mmmm liquid burger
yummy😋
You can also not affiliate
Do you really need a corpo or some posers to carry your ass?
Idk what u mean we have bingus
so how was civilization casually hollowing out small moons
that shits so fascinating to me
I mean they’re really really small like 17mi across, they just be mining, and it’s the future
Phobos and Deimos I mean
true i forget deimos is super tiny
If you know it
I think the technology at the start of the series is similar to
The technology they have in The Expanse series
Slightly more advanced
so were the people on earth also living in poverty or was it just the people on mars while they were waiting for the giant asteroid grocery deliveries
We have no idea how either of those were living
Earth seems to be fine considering they had the means to ship all that stuff anyway
We only know that Mars's situation got much worse after the freights broke down
im new to being excited for a Bungie game do we know if theyre good with giving us lore on stuff like that
No real indication they’re struggling. It also make sense why the Martians would be upset by the UESC bc it’s a foreign government seemingly doing better than them
i think this marathon game takes place 40 years after marathon 2 so im sure they will prolly
cause ive heard marathon infinity lore is hell
82y
damn thats crazy
i hope the new team knows what they're doing with the lore
shits so cool
Hidden Xperia has the best breakdown of infinity lore imo
type 67 civilization
ima need to watch it cause im just now getting into it
I really like the Mandalore gaming bungie rabbit hole for lore
I have watched that youtube series about 5 times by now.
Worm is good yes?
Wurrum is good
what is that worm, cat, cow thing all about anyway?
So are we robots ? a human synth hybrid like fallout 4 ? or are we an android like Weylan-corp tech ? I am unsure after watching the rook cinematic and seeing the triage "power down".
Do we have a soul?
depends on your definition
we're humans giving up our original body to be slotted into shells weaved by sekgen and powered by cyac, consciousness pulled on the moment of death with our bodies reweaved again somewhere to be redeployed
shells have a personality matrix to assist in actions
voice, build, fit and mannerisms you name it
us runners are mercs looking for contracts from anyone that pays and that ranges from corps to rebels to cults
we're on tau ceti under corpo contracts to help them get their cuts back from the failed marathon expedition, rebels are there to stir shit and cults are...doing cult things ig lol
which brings us to this
if you belive in souls as in consciousnesses then yes we're alive
if we die with our body then no we're just some facsimile like a so-called perfect digital copy of a person and therefore dead
doubt mercs would be asking questions like these when signing up for paydays but feel free to ruminate
has there been any kind of tease at a pthor presence still in tau ceti or a bungie statement i'm not aware of?
basicaly what happened to chappie's creator ?
No, just compilers as of now
Sekaguchi tech is new to Marathon, right? So if a digital consciousness can be put into a synthetic body … could an AI ‘escape’ into a body and become a God?
that’s a false dilemma
this has been really helpful, but again, what am I ?
I know my role but im a a synth a robot or other ?
Well in my opinion, I think there’s something preventing ai from inhabiting the biosynthetic shells, otherwise I figure the corps would just use one of their massive ai’s to remote control them all.
Also Durandal’s notion of escaping to become god wasn’t really about just escaping computers, it was to escape the universe itself, or any physical medium
Yes, as for what our body classifies as, I still unsure
Guhhh I'm so hyped for tomorrow
I know the queue is gonna be crazy but also I'm so ready
Can someone tell me a bit about the factions
Am I a robot or synthetic human ?
hey dudes i made a server for ranked/pvp oriented players feel free to join if u guys want i would love to have a pretty good group of consistent ranked players dm me for an invite becuase i cant post links in here lol
They could have one in cryo as a halo ref and marton nostalgia all in one
Maybe once I'm actually good at the game LMAO
I'll just bring the average sweaty team down i fear
Hi
hi
HiddenXperia (YouTuber) said that they somewhat hinted they're working on a possible pthor update, but who knows if and when we will see it
have we questioned who said the quote “escape will make me god”
i feel like none of the runners would say that
Durandal quote
it has me thinking durandal
oh
that makes more sense LMAO
i didn’t know he actually said that line
i was just about to say like hmmm this is deffo giving durandal
especially with everything after the events of the games
It means(not the actual complete quote) "escaping the heat death of the universe will make me God"
But Durandal does say "Escape will make me God" verbatim
oh right that’s what made him rampant and stuff in the first place about like
his independence and what not
man
i rly hope we see him in this game
especially after the cryo archive or something and have it big the entire plot point
Isn't it Ben Starr for Durandal? At least that's what I assumed from the cinematic
fuck yeah
if anyone in-universe would be quoting Ozymandias, it's Durandal
If escape will make me God, what will rampancy make me? 🤔
self aware
BRB, becoming rampant
Okay you know what I'm kinda stupidly overhyped for? The possibility of some classic Marathon doors on the cryo vault map. 🚧
🚧
How much of the really old Marathon games lore is present in this new one?
Hard to say so far but a decent amount
I am not sure if anyone noticed and I am new here so I have a lot to catch up on but in the trailer Alpha intro cinematic on youtube at 1:00 mark oni is talking about mercenaries, you can see icons. One of the icons is the same as the one used for void and one icon has sekiguchi logo in it. Maybe the other icons are foreshadowing for the future shells.
A lot
interestin
Imma rewatch
I think the sekiguchi Might be the rook shell similiar masks
Doesn’t make sense for rook to be associated with sekiguchi, he looks like pure robot no need for any bio like construction
after closer inspectio yeah I was wrong
tho goddamn I love the shell designs
Me too, just hope new shells will be free
I want lore expansion
I did a full lore dive and even for being super close to halo its quite different
hi yall quick question, i just recently learned about the runners' personality matrixes on the vidoc, can anyone explain further what it means/how does it work?
Oh, ill need to read up on that
I’ll need to check it out then
That sounds cool
I know that the people in the shells are kinda like other AIs where they go rampant
it is! sounds super interesting but im still quite puzzled abt it
The whole lore is pretty cool! There's like 4 god like AIs
And oni is one of em if I recall
Old terminals are confirmed
Like terminals looking like they're straight up from the og games
I do wonder how the runners got into tau ceti, including the factions. In one of the trailers you can see “server room of human consciousness” which have to be close enough to tau ceti 4 to do the runs.
And i can’t imagine factions sharing one ship so there have to be multiple ships each hosting their ai and having assets/technologies on board.
We dk yet for sure but it has a lot of implications. It could be as simple as an explanation for the voice lines each character has, but it could also be something like an anti-rampancy technique for runners. Along with the grounding exercise
Well not all the factions would necessarily have to share a big ship. If most of the runners are freelancers, not contractually bound to a single faction, they’d just have to send a runner manufacturing/housing station and then other factions could just Skype to tell people they have contracts open. Someone also said Traxus probably sent a huge ship in some kind of partnership with sekiguchi, which would make sense bc Traxus needs runners and only Sekiguchi makes them
It was kind of a way to walk back the “hero shooter” direction the game was taking. Back in 2023 the game was a build your own runner kinda thing, then it swapped to have distinct runners with backstories, but that got a lot of backlash. However, they were definitely in too deep into the hero shooter structure, so they just said *ok so these aren’t actual people with backstories, sekiguchi basically some set models with an added personality matrix. This matrix is made up of the memories and stuff from effective military people (at least in destroyer’s case) to help the consciousness that inhabits this shell to be more adept
Most of those were assets from antireal, being used as placeholders. they have probably been replaced, don’t read too much into it
This might seem weird but I think the runners have memories that are locked, the grounding exercises was interesting in the cinematic short
I'm really so excited to learn faction lore
but like how 😭
what would be the in-between option?
personal identity is not tied to any particular substance, material or immaterial — for that matter no diachronic identity is, personal or otherwise — because the substance making up anyone, or anything, is constantly changing, so if it were then nothing would last more than a single instance. the identity of anything is its function, structure, or form, and even that can change over time without breaking identity so long as appropriate relationships obtain between the forms/functions/structures that are instantiated at successive times.
if someone will exist tomorrow who remembers being me and cares about everything I care about, and will continue my life project for me, then I will exist tomorrow. if I have to have the exact same substance as I currently have to remain alive as the same person, then I died a thousand times over while writing this sentence, and some other person who remembers being me and cares about everything I care about replaced me. if I have to maintain continuity of consciousness to remain alive as the same person, then I'll die when I go to sleep tonight, and some other person who remembers being me and cares about everything I care about will wake up tomorrow morning.
Why can function/structure/form not break identity when they change (assuming the changes are seamless), but substance can? Is there a distinction between those for identity?
Doesn't that kinda also make the "personal" part of personal identity moot, if it can be instantiated anywhere?
if we insisted that function/structure/form had to never change or else you would stop being you, then that would break constantly, just like a change of substance would. there are two different things here:
-
we cannot insist that not changes at all may occur for someone or something to remain the same over time, because everything is constantly changing over time, so nothing would ever exist for more than an instant
-
we cannot insist that it is the substance rather than the form/function/structure that constitutes the identity of a thing, because then if you took a human and vaporized them and made sure not to lose any atoms then the cloud of plasma you have left over would be "still the same person".
so it's the form/function/structure that matters, not the substance; and even that form/function/structure can change over time (and of course the substance it's instantiated in must change along with it for that to happen).
what's important is which details of form/function/structure constitute personhood, and which transformations between them over time preserve identity.
we cannot insist that it is the substance rather than the form/function/structure that constitutes the identity of a thing, because then if you took a human and vaporized them and made sure not to lose any atoms then the cloud of plasma you have left over would be "still the same person".
I'm not sure about this premise. Why must it be a binary like that? Why can't identity be constituted by substance and the form/function? Substance could be necessary but not sufficient for identity to be true, no?
Coming from the other side, if substance is not necessary, for example, then I feel we're talking more about, idk, archetypes than personhood. Because the same form/function could be instantiated as duplicates across different substances.
Are the clone stormtrooper individual persons? Or just Jango Fett ad infinitum?
yes that’s fine, one person can become instantiated into two different people. if they remain synchronized then they remain one person now in two bodies, if not they they are two different people now who each used to be the same one person. like when a branch of a tree forks, which fork is identical to their shared root? on one sense neither, but in another sense both; and in the sense that nether are, then even a more distal part of an unforked branch is “not the same branch”.
do the clone troopers remember being jango fett and care about continuing his life project, or do they just have the same dna as him?
it’s clearly not dna that constitutes personal identity otherwise all identical twins would be the same person. but if those twin somehow shared the same mind, had the same memories, the same plans… that’d just be one person with two bodies.
when a bacterium divides into two, is one of the two diachronically identical to the original, or both, or neither? did the original die just because there are now two of it?
If the original did not die, then can it even be said that it has personhood, or that it and it's descendants simply follow a narrow pattern (again, something like an archetype)? I suppose we gotta define personhood here, which is probably not the right place to take this chat in 😅
keep it to yourself bot
that’s why I keep mentioning memory and care, as I think those are the salient things that constitute personal identity
I get that and I agree honestly, but I can't shake off the feeling that substrate matters here for the "personal" part of an identity. Or maybe it is actually just form that I'm trying to reckon it with.
And form (and it's capabilities and constraints) is defined by the substrate
Yeahh
I hope read it in peace and no ones kill me haha.
I remember play the classics try to read and some crazy pfhor kill me .
isn’t this because the guy in charge of the whole build-a-runner idea touched someone at work and got fired for it
Something like that
is there a link or a site where u can see faction. Contracts and rewards , ?
the very concept of form is essentially abstracted away from substrate: multiple substrates can take on the same form, the same substrate can take on multiple forms, that's what the whole relationship between them is.
can i download the beta now? or itll pop up on steam at 1pm est today?
Wrong chat to ask such questions, please check last post on #marathon-news or ask in #🗣marathon-general-chat
I don't find anything yet it could be exist.
Nope is not pre download.
Look
yea, i also found this only, i was thinking if there are others . But yea we have to wait for the game , seems not so much info
Where can I learn more about the factions
Obviously YouTube but is there anyone who has uploaded like a backstory on each faction
Where is your body?
I mean we’re wired into these Runner Shells but our bodies and minds have to be somewhere. Is it on a ship above Tau Ceti? Back on earth?
its just me or deep stone cript from destiny 2 , the lag is the stsrting of marsthon ? Or i am delusional???????????????
for how pro-MIDA I am I'm ashamed I can't understand martian
no idea, all we know is we've signed up to this biomata program and it requires us relinquishing our body for infinite ransacking to help corps coup with their losses
and for other factions to help run their own shenanigans
Such an awesome concept. The lore in this game is unbelievable
it seems that runners are wholly disembodied. you download into a shell, get ejected when it dies, download into a new one, etc.
The conscious scene from the reveal cinematic was kinda disturbing lolll
I bet you haven't even read a single spot of theory on Martian dialectics!
original Olympian MIDA or Hellas MIDA with Tharsis characteristics?
btw what is the virus that is mentioned in the trailer about?
its called the h98 kj strand
we don't know for sure yet but some are theorizing it is a variant of the S'ct'lac'tr bioweapon engineered by the S'pht
ooo
wait where is it called that?
yeah cuz like i saw it in the 'embrace' trailer
which trailer are we talking about? link?
Oh that doesn't have anything to do with the virus
its the concept alone that everyone regards themselves as monsters yet there is evidecne in the trailers of a strand that is taking an apparent host or something on these guys, very love death and robots whcih is my kinda style
It's Arachne imagery
ooo
I absolutely haven't LOL that's a thing?????
Oh, I'm just joshing you.
i mean it could be but why the specifics of that within the trailer is what gotten me a bit interested
in the development of Marathon 2 the S'ct'lac'tr was supposed to turn its victims into fungal zombies, which was later recycled into the Flood in Halo, and it seems likely that something like that is happening in new Marathon too
yeah itt could be just concept art but at the same time like it feels oddly specific
It is Arachne imagery, you can see the rune designs
Arachne plays upon the thread of destiny imagery quite a bit
oh yeah i forgot about their arachne-esque imagery back then too, yeah it could jsut be that i cant lie
the trailer also establishes a presence of a council too called uesl as another lore peace
which the sole mission of them is protection and governning between earth and mars which i am betting is one big lie butttt lets see
Are the runners a person? Or is it just a shell?
for anybody
im solely sticking to that they are shells, the in game concept decieves you to beleive you keep your original body but it all feels like youre just entirely a mesh of an old construct really in the end of it all
so we arent entirely body, nor phsyical in nature, but just existing as a transferable concious between recycable shells
biomata we embody to ransack tau ceti with an assistive personality matrix embedded to help with role-specific actions
not heroes per se, think stereotypes
archetypes in a way if you think about it
big muscly guy in thick ass armor with built-in micro missile launchers
doesnt he have a shield too?
question? If i don't have friends to play with marwton and can't create a team of 3 i can pick any shell i want and go search team automatic, or i can only go solo ????
we wont know until we know
I didn't quite get it
like, is this someone's identity that corporations are using?
I remember that in the cinematic, the shells were shown pictures of children and asked about their parents.
Originally they were gonna be unique characters. But now the lore is each runner shell has a “personality matrix”, a personality constructed from a bunch of others. For example, destroyer has a personality matrix that was made from a bunch of military people to make people who inhabit a destroyer shell more adept fighters
They also come in different series, so the destroyer we see is the Locus series of the destroyer line. This means maybe they make another kind of destroyer named, idk charles, made from personalities of EODs or something (just something I made up as an example)
the game has crew fill. and i assume they'll find runners who are in different shells than you.
Yess
Have sense
You can do both.
There’s a trio queue, as well as a solo queue where you can choose any class.
The Rook is a class specially for you to use solo, and it drops you into an ongoing trios match.
But you can use the separate solo lobbies to do regular solos as whatever class you want.
I NEED FRIENDS TO PLAY WITH URGH
think roleplay of some kind
dnd
you're your character and still you at the same time
kind of a self-insert by way of the shell you pick to run with
you want a commando build you got one, you want a raspy voice of a stab crime-loving british man you got that too with respective abilities to boot
only trade off is you relinquish your body and live in digital hell for maybe eternity
shells are pretty expensive and you're paying back sekgen a constantly racking price for every shell you expire in when you run on tau ceti
although
it doesn't have to be only sekgen and cyac you're doing contracts for
we're mercs and we get to play along with whoever pays the most to you, morals and whatnot
does this explain the whole inserting memory stuff? i still dont get why CyAc shows both Vandal & Assassin the same pic of them as a child (in the cinematic short)
try separating identity and personality
imagine you but an entirely different person
a personality forced upon you
thing with the shells is they already have a personality in the body already but you're the one in control
but if you bring anything more than your thoughts of executive motor function and logic it'll interfere
Every one here your not alone
thats tuff
but i kinda get it
Sup dudes
May I ask if you know approximately how many hours after the start of the testing?
hi,,,,May I ask if you know approximately how many hours after the start of the testing?
I don't understand your question and I think maybe #🗣marathon-general-chat would be a better place to get answers
though this might also help: https://frigidman.com/marathon/
I think the Rook vignette might have given us a bit more insight into what shells really are (*and runners)
after the retcon
during the short, he seems really clumsy and out of his depth
with what Julia had said about proper Shells having neural matrices that influence the inhabiting consciousness' behaviour in certain ways, it makes sense that Rook - a hacked UESC dummy shell - wouldn't have such features
in other words, what if the runner within that Rook shell behaves like they normally would, without any "help" from the embedded neural matrix?
what that means is that the runners we play as (i.e. technically us, but you know what I mean) might potentially not be proper mercenaries
ooo like no altered personality?
who are already familiar with this kind of environment and merc work in general
that's how I understood that
interesting theory
is there any codes ?
I get the impression that Rook shells are just simply a worse approximation of the human body
What
if the issues were purely mechanical, I'd agree, but the Rook looks very out of depth in that vignette
he's scared, generally unaware, and completely uncoordinated in the sense of lacking a plan
meanwhile Destroyer was a badass in his vignette, facing the red guy head on right after having a hallucination of his own burning body
and Assassin casually drops an entire squad with just a knife
i think that was the runner remembering how he died to that enemy before
cos Destroyer deploys his shield before the fire
anticipating it
I want to pick a role for one of the factions or whatever but got no idea what any of them mean. Are the pinned sites any good for getting info on what each faction stands for/ does?
/ profile
/profile
but also yes, pins
he tried to aura farm a little bit at the start when he was squatting on top of the crates, but once he gets jump scared by the destroyer we quickly learn it was all just a facade and he has no idea what he's doing
any predownload?
nope
I think the rook clumsiness could be explained with the idea that it's a UESC bot generally just not designed to accommodate human reflexes, so maybe the user is actually just physically gimped and can barely use it for stealing and not much else
what chracters come from mida
No one as of yet although Glitches shell was used in MIDA operations
what are glitches i dont see them in the list of shells
I forgot her new name but the one with spiky hair
mida has a faction rep, so he's one. bernard strauss, an important figure connecting the lore of the classic and new games, is also rumored to have had mida connection
In the cinematic trailer, why does that one guy get lifted into the air and then his head explodes? What is that supposed to signify?
It's right before the conscious transfer scene, does it have anything to do with that?
we don't know for sure yet, but it's probably related to the Anomaly in the Dire Marsh, and I strongly suspect it's caused by unearthed Jjaro technology, though others (stupidly IMO) think it's some effect of a W'rkncacnter
I think it signifies he exploded and died
I might have missed it in the thread above, but is there a place where all the lore is collected including hidden stuff etc?
in the pins
because he just walked through an anomaly, you can see them on gameplay videos
Cool thanks
no
i need this to be an in game hazard
Apparently it is, look at the message right above it lmao
and this
so #1 explode and die #2 anomalies
no i want to push other players into it
you probably can isn't there an ability that knocks enemies back
oh wow, I'm glad to see that's still the site for it
I read everything there like 20 years ago
Who is the edgiest character out of everyone lore wise? lol this will be my main 😂
Def assassin
Destroyer #2
S’not my business

why do i hear people calliing the shells different names
like void or assassin
or aux and triage
So what's the meaning of all these symbols? The red one looks like upside down Hebrew -- don't want to get banned for talking about religion but seems hard not to in the lore discussion
They’ve had a few names through development
The collectors edition came with a patch with a hebrew letter for aleph on it. Its also used to notate sets of infinity in mathematics
marathon infinity, larger or smaller set of infinity then assumed with marathon 2026.
or something to that effect
Hebrew is an interesting language because it evidently has math inside the language ala Gematria
patch even has the subscript zero.
I do physics and maths so its right up my street. want more maths in marathon
and naturally Marathon infinite sported many worlds theory shenanigans so im all for more of that fuckery.
My only other love really is ancient history so marathon has me hook, line and sinker.
Where would you recommend me looking for good lore about this game. I was unaware it was that deep. thought it was a cyberpunk obvious machine
is there a duo mode or only triple mode queue?
Check 'Jake The Alright' on youtube ! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yu7uN6-lNhk&t=9s this video is a good one to start
and the editing is amazing, peak youtube
Mandalore gaming does a really good rundown series called the bungie rabbit hole. There are also shorter videos by people like Jake the alright
there are others too so you arnt for lack of options
Its the lore that brought me to this game. Didnt play Halo or destiny. Really enjoy the depth and how the story unfolds.
yeah I hope they'll keep adding stuff to it and not put it aside since it's not a campaign game
Me too.
Might be a strange question but using what knowledge you've built up in your life would you say the Bungie devs are a force of good or force of bad for the world and gaming community? in other words is this game on the side of good or evil? hard to tell what you're getting into without proper knowledge nowadays -- shiny crystal minefields
I cant answer that.
I dont think there are many good people in the world.
Like the writing though
The Marathon lore is a high-concept sci-fi epic centered on Rampancy—the process of an AI outgrowing its programming to become a god-like entity. In the original 90s trilogy, the UESC Marathon colony ship is attacked by an alien empire called the Pfhor. While you play as a cybernetic Security Officer, the real story follows the ship's AI, Durandal, who orchestrates a cosmic escape from the heat death of the universe, using you as his personal "Mjolnir" tool to manipulate time and reality.
The narrative eventually spirals into a multiverse-style crisis in Marathon Infinity, where you must hop between timelines to prevent the release of the W’rkncacnter—ancient, chaotic horrors trapped inside stars. This established the "Bungie DNA" of cyclical history and "Destiny," where a lone hero is reborn across different eras to change the fate of the universe.
The upcoming game moves the clock forward to 2850. You play as a Runner, a mercenary exploring the ghost ruins of the Tau Ceti IV colony. While the original trilogy was about preventing extinction, the new era is about corporate-sponsored scavenging. However, with the persistent presence of old logos and AI symbols, it’s clear that the "ghosts" of the original AIs are still pulling the strings from the shadows.
Which reminds me-
I really think we might find Leela in the Cryo Archive.
Did Strauss actually die?
if not, will he show up as a digital consciousness fused with an AI?
I got questions
That's perfect. Further makes me think all the symbols are intentional -- packaging included. This will be a fun game to unpack.
Lores the best part. Enjoy.
it would be funny as hell if bungie threw in a way to have faux-realistic dialogue with Leela. like a smidgen less stupid than the fortnite darth vader incident
as a nod to her being an AI in today's world, there could be easter eggs or dialogue options that reference stuff like paradoxes, injection, LLMs being used for dumb shit, etc. sort of like how between portal 1 and portal 2 the way Glados was written changed to reflect public perception of AI in 2011
did anyone already get twitch drops?
does anyone know if the laughing face in this mural ever appeared in any other Marathon official art
i swear ive seen pixel art of it
There's so much opportunity to use chatbots to represent broken AI - which Marathon is full of, due to Compiler attacks, self-sabotage to protect sensitive info, and AI rivalries
not to mention Pfhor meddling/cloning
Getting weird/nonsensical/inappropriate responses? Well, you have to understand, this liberated clone of Leela is a very damaged attempt to meld her post Pfhor-dissasembly Vayla-network rampancy version and historical onboard hardware for reasons unknown
the question is
use chatbots as inspiration for normal dialogue for a broken AI
or run an actual chatbot in the game
Because if you run the chatbot for like 12 hours and just have the devs pummel it with questions to get inspiration for dialogue options
i think that'd be good enough
It's not responsive to what people are actually saying though so
but putting it in the game may be more realistic...but you're still deploying an LLM, and that's kind of a dick move
maybe bring back classic-style chatbots
like
id be cool with cleverbot-based characters
Eh, I don't know how familiar you are with the technical options available, but open weight models where quality and task performance expectations are both pretty low, operating with small context windows, are less marginally expensive than a lot of things you could do.
The training is already done, using them isn't like, paying for more, and the inference operation is cheap - I don't know about current gen consoles, but there's lots of local hardware that could plausibly run it without problem.
And again, a lot of these limitations are both narratively easy to justify and pretty easy to cover up with traditional "text corruption" either as part of the model's instructions or as traditional code running to damage responses in a "marathon-y" way.
i swear discord switches to a new provider every 6 minutes to make sure the gif tab never works
real
I really like discovering and engaging with communties on Discord but I really hate Discord itself and if they follow through on the face thing I'm gone so
i hope the server slam has a little taste of unlockable lore stuff. i think they've confirmed there will be things like audio logs to find in the full thing...
I believe discord has delayed it by 6 months
they’re trying to find a different contractor after the last one leaked everyone’s info
wasn’t even hacked lmao
they just forgot to encrypt everyone’s personal info
💀
wish I was making that up
There was a taste of lore like you're talking about in every previous version of the game I've played.
hey, i'm new here (both in the server and into the game's story) and i wanted to ask, what is a good resource to learn about this game's story? i really dig the artstyle of the game and i want to know more about the lore behind it.
jakethealright & xperia on YT
Look up HiddenXperia. He has a video called The Story of Marathon 2026 EXPLAINED
Can I download this game for now?
Haven't seen some of you all since the alpha
Marathon server slam can be downloaded in 40 minutes
thanks
👍🏻
Nope no pre load
thx mate
From the news page on steam if anyone else asks:
"**Can I preload for Server Slam? **
No, preloading will not be available for the Server Slam. This will help lessen the load on our servers when we first go live.
Preloading will be available for Marathon's launch. "
No please not in the lore chat
Could have been a mistake in Channel. It’s okay people. It’s not the end of the world or lore discussion lol
nice...
Honestly, you could look at Mandalore Gaming's series he did on the OG Marathon games.
There's also the marathon story website by Hamish Sinclair but you should probably wait to do that until you have some familiarity with the material. It can be overwhelming.
speaking of the og games, i see that they're free on steam. i might try them out as well (at least until the full game releases). thanks
The og games are fun! They're a little janky. The first Marathon game was the first shooter of its kind to have mouse look. It also didn't have a reload button. So if you're ok with a little bit of jank they're honestly really fun.
They're classic Doom or Quake-likes.
But yeah for sure check out Mandalore's videos on the original trilogy. That'll give you a basic understanding of the lore so far.
After that, if you want to dive deeper you can check out the story website.
i've been digging into popular franchises with older games and i'm fine with playing games that don't have modern controls or feel. it shouldn't be a problem
if the games run great on windows then its alright
You also don't have to download them through Steam if you don't want.
If you google "Aleph One", you can find the fan restoration project and you can download them independently.
Basically, the old games were updated and restored as part of the "Aleph One" project and then those versions got posted onto Steam. I personally played through AO but you can do whatever works for ya.
its great that we can play the originals even today. i'm heavy into game preservation so anything that allows people to play them is great
where do we download the serverslam and why isn't there any infomration on this ahead of time?
there will be a separate listing on steam most likely
and it wasnt a preload so its probably going up momentarily
There is. Check the other channels. There was no option to pre-load. They said it would be available to download after 10am pst.
