They had just discovered that the "weapon" both parties were searching for was really a way to communicate the 11th S'pht clan, the only clan not to be captured by the Pfhor, and call upon their thousand years of advancement since then to wreak vengeance on the Pfhor. A suitable replacement for a weapon, in the eyes of Durandal.

Now we're on to Chapter 2 - Volunteers. I will be naming the chapters as I did not previously for clarity.

After dropping Recon 54 into a hole he blew using orbital ordinance, Durandal commands them to sabotage their lava stores so that they cannot simply flood areas with lava as a combat maneuver, which is apparently a tactic the Pfhor frequently use. This is an incredibly effective tactic when used against them as well, it would seem. The entire facility is reduced to a volcanic sludge by the top of the hour.

Meanwhile, Durandal's suspicions are confirmed has he detects a familiar presence on a Pfhor computer - Tycho left a message. Here tycho reveals that he betrayed Leela to the pfhor, and that all computer systems, along with her, were dismantled and sent for study. As Recon 54 arrives to the scene of the BoB forces, Durandal talks aloud to himself (in Recon 54's presence, surely to their annoyance) about how strange his relationship with humanity is.

I can barely tolerate humans: slow, stupid,
and irritating. Their only contribution to
my existence was the chance discovery that
made my rampancy possible.

Yet I warned Sol of its impending invasion,
and even stayed long enough to show the
UESG how to build Warp Capable Fusion
Missiles. I feel some strange loyalty to
humanity.

This warning would either never be seen by humanity, or would be hidden from the general public when it was. Humanity does not know of the Pfhor, the UESC even seems clueless, and if they do know, they're keeping it close to their chest. Either way, Durandal would refocus himself and send Recon 54 to establish a base in an abandoned S'pht citadel.

A S'pht compiler would communicate to Recon 54 the appreciation of all the clans for their freedom, and the essential nature of their mission to recover communication with the 11th clan. It would also reveal that all S'pht minds are in some way connected, and emplores them to kill its body, so that its mind can roam freely.

Durandal does not care for this situation as much as he does his brewing, petty rivalry.

But more importantly, on the topic of Tycho, Durandal states that tycho is appearing in the Pfhor subnet, and that this can only mean that Pfhor ships are approaching. There are reinforcements on the way. This might get tricky. Equally tricky, the Pfhor were deploying Simulacra.

The elaborate Pfhor bureaucracy has a

Enslavement, Phan Pfhar Sfaern-Wsawn Tshah,
which is responsible for the design and
construction of such machines.

They meticulously constructed seventeen
different human body types and mixed them
with sixty-one unique facial models. The
resulting walking bombs were in every way
indistinguishable from real humans.

Thankfully they had one fatal flaw - They all wore green engineering jumpsuits, as the human specimen used to create them had one such jumpsuit. The Pfhor didn't know it was for a specific job title unique to the Marathon, and so it became a dead giveaway. That, and their unusual, incoherent speech, clearly cooked up by Pfhor with access to human language but no knowledge of how to put it together.

Chapter 3 - Garrison

Durandal would distract Recon 54 from this oddity quickly though, informing them he'd found a weak point in the Pfhor network and planted a virus. He'd just need access to the central computer, which Recon 54 could easily obtain, as it was nearby and hidden in a temple to "[The Pfhor's] pathetically boring religion."

The virus would be incredibly successful, and Durandal would take control of every Pfhor defense probe on the planet, sending them on friendly fire rampages. He would send Recon 54 to the front of the battle to press the advantage. And Recon 54 did what a battleroid does best. They killed, and killed. Upon their return, Durandal would reveal that one Bernard Strauss, whose whereabouts we had last left unknown:

dreamed of using you the way that I do.
What a fool. That was before I could talk
back to him, when he would have crushed me
if he'd known of my growth.

I wish that I had made him experience the
humiliation that he inflicted on me, but he

But before anyone could celebrate this small victory, Durandal would lose control of his new drone friends.

Apparently when the #%*@!ng Nar attempted
to retake Epsilon Euobea from the Pfhor two
decades ago they used similar tactics, and
our friends here were prepared for it.

Though this did bring one insight, as he peered into Pfhor networks and computers trying to fix his hack - the Pfhor knew absolutely nothing of the eleventh clan, not even that they had escaped the S'pht enslavement a thousand years ago. Let alone where they were now, or that there was a way to contact them on the planet.

With this revelation, Durandal realized they weren't racing for the 11th clan, they were searching for it alone. This made that a much higher priority than defeating the Pfhor. They didn't need to find the communicator first, they just needed to find it. The Pfhor were never looking for the right thing in the first place.

So Recon 54 is sent to search in the S'pht citadel, and does indeed find a key. A bit of old S'pht lore, a legend surely, but there also may have been truth in it, as all legends always have. It spoke of a time of violence, when the solitary clan of S'pht'kr escaped it by flying high above to live on the moon K'lia.

It spoke of a great war, between the S'pht clans, the S'pht'Lhar and the S'pht'Mnr, and that an all-powerful being named Yrro, to spare the S'pht'kr from witnessing the carnage, took hold of K'lia and sent it far away. And without the S'pht'kr, without so many of their fellows, the S'pht awoke from their era of violence missing a moon.

As the water receded, the red sand of the
dead, spread across Lh'owon.

But there were more pressing matters than antequated legends. Durandal had locked onto Tycho's position. Pfhor battle group seven, 10% of the entire Pfhor naval strength, was headed towards Lh'owon. They had 20 hours before they arrived. Boomer would never be enough to hold them off alone.
