It isn't. it's gonna have a ranked mode, I hear. They're polar opposites in the looter extraction genre. Arc is playful, immersive, role-playing extraction where balancing doesn't really matter too much, and low stakes and minimal punishment are the default | vs | Marathon's more hardcore, competitive, tightly balanced, class-based w/ buildcrafting, without much forgiveness and the expectation of a durable mind.

It's like wondering how Hunt Showdown is gonna compete with Tarkov back in the day, they're not in the same sphere at all, just because the same two words can describe them

extraction shooter applies to helldivers too, but it's not competing with ABI.

Well, ok so shells seem to be a different thing. Purpose made for military operations, these set patterns, like "glitch" and "void." A regular Biomata is custom-made, as described on the Sekiguchi website, and can be ordered by anyone, though I imagine unaffordable to own for the average person, renting one for day-to-day can probably be recouperated through the profit gained when in a body that doesn't need sleep, is stronger than you are, and looks better to boot.

I imagine series C and even A are probably more consumer products

while only mercenaries are going into the shell program, these purpose designed Biomata patterns that come with Personality Matrices.

No doubt, CyberAcme didn't become so ubiquitous without some ruthlessness. It's for sure some kinda indentured servitude situation, but it's probably more stable and safe than working with your real body. Hence all the takers. Of course, the way MIDA talks about us makes me think "runners" are even more common than I've assumed. A call out to "all runners" to enter the race for the marathon, it feels like a lot of people just live as digital consciousnesses now and take up bodies and jobs wherever they can. We know just enough to know that it's partially faithful to the originals and it's gonna be handled well enough to be coherent, but we don't know how faithful exactly (a LOT might be retconned, we can't know) and it's difficult to tell exactly how much of the ARGs was foreshadowing for how the lore will usually be delivered and how much was just folks at Bungie having fun.
