The thing that gets me about Pirates is how the first one despite the Aztec stuff was probably one of the most grounded of the series especially once you find out the tactic they pulled with the Interceptor to swing her to have a fighting chance was actually used.

merchants are technically a build item that you unlock via reputation with the factions. Some of the factions sell a contract item, that you use to build a merchant kiosk. Check the provisioners of the different factions, they're all in tortuga

Your best bet is to not corpse run with an angry mob behind you, prep for taking it on slowly, and clearing it out completely. Back out before you die from scarlet rot/taint/wither/etc. and reset it.

best way to get coins is to upgrade your ship's boarding gear, and board ships with the treasure chest icon on their names.

2nd best way is to go to ancient ruins POIs and loot it, chests and undead typically have trinkets you sell to the smugglers
