As a veteran gamer, we know only to well, everything is subject to change, every studio (that isn't kickstarting or doesn't have a development plan that includes an injection of funds from its player base ) does its best to fully develop a game before needing to think about monetisation and development costs.
I've seen several titles over the years, having no choice to but to release in EA just to be able to keep the studio and development afloat.

What's important is the vision and concept only changes for the better along the way.

Lot games do paid alpha - Star Citizen, Pax Dei, Stars Reach, and so many, many more

You buy the game/game package early and grants access to Alpha test up to launch - An old concept that works as long as the game launches, some like Landmark... Failed horribly before launch so people lost out 😦 But it is mostly used to fuel game development either through kick starters, early access packages with special content not available after launch, etc. Generally works out well 🙂

@fading spindle no, The land areas with npc crew that* can do a some automated task for you wouldn't work on the ship - the building system is extensive. You can also level terrain, dig, etc. There will be a lot of customization options for the ship - but it will not be like Atlas where you completely build as you wish. For game optimization the ships will be a kit - as in a Cutter, all would have same Cutter, but there will be a lot of customization to make that Cutter unique to you later on - to what detail - that will be revealed at a later time when they ready for it.

@fading spindle I haven't heard anything about them joining you per say in adventures, but they play a role I think in a crew for a ship and operations around your base - I'm don't think they tag along with you per say for land combat.

Time will tell on that one. But we do know we can get pets. They said in last alpha there were 3 basic ones - parrot, and a couple others - but don't know what they got in store for us in that regards yet - that may come more developed later in another playtest.

@spare vine There is no playtest currently running. The 1st one was in the fall of last year. The next one will be sometime very soon if all goes well (The build is ready, but there's polishing and fixes to do) see yesterdays's post here #│announcements message . The playtest signups were overwhelming with an expected 8k and in 1 week had 140k, so they were temporarily turned off. Keys have also been given away. I respectfully disagree, from what I've seen so far, Crosswind has many similarities to Atlas.
And drawing such conclusion was even mentioned by a developer here : #1354114215652360252 message

However I 100% agree, it's not going to be Atlas, but to say its not similar I think goes beyond the actual reality of it.
As it is,
It's a pirate game, it has ship building, base building, survival mechanics, naval warfare, crops/farming and pve content and the list goes on.

I'm ngl, I'm a huge Atlas fan, with 5k plus hours, and I believe Grapeshot got it right in so many ways, there was so much to do, and so much fun had.

I seriously hope Crosswind is half as good Atlas was.

I wouldn't say you had to manage it more, I would say it had far greater range/scope of food and drink items, with the ingredients and resources required to make.
As well being more buff orientated too.

However the basic formula is the same : X + X + Y = Z
Flour, Water and an Oven, makes Bread.

@lean gulch I played Atlas, but was not a huge fan. I believe Crosswind to be much better than Atlas, But in different ways. There is no direct comparision as they different games, but most survival games all share the same basic elements. I had 6k hours in Ark, and Ark and Atlas are basically the same game, just two teams that split and each went a different direction with their development, but the taming, breeding, Building, survival were at the core are the exact same buggy code. They were also full MMO's. Crosswind at its core is not an MMO, but a survival game that is like Valheim/Enshrouded/Return to Moria more than anything else and for Naval its currently like Black Flag. It will later have some MMO elements outside your personal world. #💬│windrose-chat message Regardless, I believe everyone will have a fun time with it and think there will definitely be things to say this is similar, but the game from all we understand feels nothing like Atlas, thankfully. I'm glad some enjoyed it as much as you did. I'm just so excited to see hopefully very soon everyone dive into it and have fun - me included 🙂

When it is time Steam will randomly select from those that singed up to issue keys along with the ones that already won keys to playtest when it launches.

As far I've understand, so far you have your "world", all the biomes and story-related progression belongs to you, and as your friend visit your world which is unique(no other player's world will be the same) you can play together.

And there will be other areas that are shared for everyone, like Tortuga which is so far displayed like a hub to gather people around, making friends(and possibly much more in the future), and pvp-pve zones where you can play with anyone else for some objectives, so on.

But the essentials seem to be preserved if you wish to solo-play

@fading spindle yes correct- you will have your own area, however once you go to main hub other people can be there- that isnt part of your world. Think of how Guild Wars 1, if you played it - you could go to the city and see everyone there - then leave to go to your own instance area with your friends/companions and nobody else could join that wasn't in your party- your world until you returned to the city "hub".

As far as Console, they have already said they want to make a console version, but it will not be worked on until the initial game is out. But they do want to make it. @supple nexus answer is yes they plan to have EU, NA, RU, and ASIA, however for the playtest coming up - As I understand it will initially just be East Coast USA, EU and Asia - not full global coverage yet as it is still in Early Alpha.

This discord for sure. As far as I know, no other giveaways happening elsewhere, and there has been a contest for a key giveaway (they gave 100 keys for this one) a couple months back.
