The next playtest is optimistically taking place alter this month. Devs pushed it back to ensure quality and squash major bugs. Places for that test are limited and sign ups are closed on steam due to the sheer volume of applicants. (140k in a single week)

Theres likely to be another contest soon to award more guaranteed spots in the next test but it hasn’t been announced yet. OR steam will randomly select people when the test goes live. Since it’s early alpha, being chosen isn’t guaranteed but there will likely be more spots open in the future.

@solemn dock There is no playtest currently running. The 1st one was in the fall of last year. The next one will be sometime with in the next month if all goes well, could be by the end of May. The playtest signups were overwhelming with an expected 8k and in 1 week had over 140k, so they were temporarily turned off. Keys have also been given away. Most likely will be other key giveaways and other signups when they are ready to open it up again.

@narrow sentinel well being there's 140,000 applicants - its going to be based off how many they end up letting in - was initially going to be 8k, so once stress tested and see how many they can handle, I'm sure they can open up for more, and always a chance for multiple servers. Just not sure exactly how they plan on handling the back end for it. We will have to wait n see.

Well I'll agree with you on that. Its been discussed at length here before. Obtaining cosmetics and vanity items are going to be a feature, however the methods and process isnt decided yet. Right now since the game is only going into its second playtest and still early alpha, the Dev team are more focused on getting the game into a stable and playable state first and foremost.

Remember, theres still a lot of time between now and planned release so plenty of opportunity for desired features to be looked into and added in the future.

We are just now getting to the 2nd Alpha, so It is going to be Pure PVE, testing all the survival mechanics, Crafting, exploration, combat, sailing, building, etc. to make sure those are all up to the standards they want and functioning the way needs to be. There will be lot more playtest focused on adding other mechanics later.

So actually reading history text and it does say cats where common on pirate ships. They saw them as good luck and some believed they warded of evil spirits plus they used them to hunt mice and rats. Capt cook was believed to have them on all of his ships

I know for now the ship building isn't modular and I'm gonna be completely honest, I hope it stays the way it was when I played but like, maybe with some customization, not a massive fan of fully modular myself

As in, theres an option to go into greater depth when building ships but its not necessary

I would like the option to switch between different styles of ship components. Different prow, different decks.

Actually the best example I can think of to try and explain what I mean is how the stern looks on different vessels. Look at the Victory and how its different to this model I found online

The royal william was completed fairly early in the 1700s and the game being set in that time period it wouldnt be too out of possibility to have some earlier designs

Though ships like caravels and carracks I doubt well see, I just adore longer beakheads which in the 1700s designs strayed further from them being short and stout

It definitely seems like a combination of some really good games, navel elements from black flag, land elements from pirates online, and what seems like some sea of thieves with how projectiles work, didn’t look too much into it but raids similar to I guess you could say like FFXIV/WOW. Sounds like some of the best combinations out of people frustrated with how badly past games have come out and took the reigns into their own hands, it’s certainly like a game I’ve considered making myself one day, I’m glad there’s an indie studio out there that has felt the same resentment, can’t wait to see where it goes from here.

I'm personally super excited to see where this goes as it has a lot of elements of great elements from a lot of games that we wished were in the same game.

My worry might be about the optional PvP and balancing. With it being separated from the main game completely wouldn’t that often cause it to essentially be nonexistent until people craft the best gear? From that FAQ it appears that’s the idea in keeping it separate as a whole, which don’t get me wrong is really good on paper, you want to make sure that those who don’t want PvP dont need to do it, but it would also mean any awards from PvP (or the open world PvE that was mentioned) cannot be upgrades and must be either cosmetic or something that wouldn’t be stronger than anything you could get from the private islands, as that would give an unfair advantage to those who have PvPed already, or alternatively say the end game gear is in this open world section for the optional PvE it might have no effect at all in PvP and scales down to the same stats as the best farmed gear.

@dim bobcat the Pvp will I believe be fun, and unlike many games rewarding and not punishing to those participating in it. From what weve been told (and this could change), there will be areas of conflict for pvp, be it zones, regions, faction vs. Faction, etc. On entering those areas you are no longer in optional pvp, you choose to enter, so youll be in pvp. Think of areas in albion with pvp pockets, contested zones, New Wold faction vs. Faction, the player chooses to enter into it to engage in it. Pvp we know little about and how rewards will work, what will make it enraging. Pvp is not in the coming playtest, that is still being developed and we should see more on it at a later time. So hang tight on it, nothing for pvp is set yet.

@quaint quest hasn't started yet. The 1st one was in the fall of last year. The next one will be sometime with in the next month if all goes well, could be by the end of May. The playtest signups were overwhelming with an expected 8k and in 1 week had 140k, so they were temporarily turned off. With so many responding they decided to take a little more time and do more polishing and increase the quality of the test. Keys have also been given away. Most likely will be other key giveaways and other signups when they are ready to open it up again, so keep an eye on https://discord.com/channels/1260209458924224542/1349707400336248842.

It will be like that video on youtube of Fallout 76 where there is a level 120 guy going around shooting people to prompt them for pvp and then they never shoot back and the one guy who does litterally he just whacks him once with melee and kills him

Unless PvP brings gear items loot that cant be collected in PvE or grants better XP gain then your right there will be little to no pvp until players have aquired crazy high tier stuff

But from what we've been told as an example - If you in a ship and get attacked and sunk you dont loose your ship, just the cargo you hauling - So it wouldn't be super punishing, yet still rewarding. Unlike some games like Last Oasis as an example where your "ship/walker" can get burnt out and you start all over - punishing ( and usually its mass numbers vs 1 or 2).

@thin anchor like I said, pvp hasnt been done yet. Give them time to get it done and then see what ya think. It probably wont be in a playtest for a few more months till its fleshed out. So best not to make assumptions yet, nothing is set in stone and nothing is official on pvp yet. But Im sure it won't be a griefing situation, which is what runs players off (like Last Oasis pvp lol)

I feel like that's very in line with something like SOT, you lose the cargo/treasure but respawn with your ship, makes a lot of sense. It's also a good way to have PvP because then you can fight "without" stakes (assuming both players have no cargo) would likely prevent people from trying to get away from a fight and actually go until the end.

I say that because I find the project ambitious, and having played a lot of survival MMOs, it's a kind of feedback that I'm making by asking this question, I think that what really pleases a player and what will make him want to come back, is above all to have a combat system that is not easy to master, where we can dissociate a player with a lot of hours of play and another with less hours of play, after I could not test crosswind, but it was just a small parenthesis on my part 😉

The playtest signups were overwhelming with an expected 8k and in 1 week had 140k, so they were temporarily turned off. Keys have also been given away. In the announcement made, it was said that the interest already made at the time of the announcement was already far greater than what the alpha infrastructure can handle.
So I would assume ( not forget that assumption is the mother of all screw ups ) that for this current upcoming test, they have more sign ups than needed.

History and experience tells me, there will be another chance to sign up for future tests.

Yeah they told me during my application process that out of an entry pool of about 20 candidates, at least 5 will get selected for Submariner. Idk, I'd prefer surface fleet, but the bonuses for sub-surface are enticing

@noble herald I met all the requirements to go in as a PJ, was my dream for years, but my ears prevented me from going in - due too special hearing loss from meningitis, I can hear speech in 1 ear, the other I hear everything else but speech. But my hearing even though the loss is excellent. Just didnt meet the rigorous requirements. Was a shame because I had trained for it. Back when I was wanting to go in the PJ's and Seals went through same training together, then they branched off to specialized fields Survival/Demolitions, etc. It's since changed to being separate training areas but It brings the pirate out in me somehow lol
