the easiest way to explain secondary stats is that they are very generalized priorities. They are not close to optimal, and that's not their goal. Their purpose is to add a bit of a guiding path for casuals who might be confused comparing two items at equal level and aren't sure what to take. If you're any person that wants to be more accurate than "idk, is vers good for this spec?" and you actually give a shit about that minutia when gearing your character, you sim yourself.

There is no alternative to simming, because stats fluctuate. Getting X stat means the other 3 stats gain value comparatively. They ebb and flow off of each other, and so following simple bullshit like crit>mast or even following bis lists where you look at the gear and go "ah, 5437 crit is what I need" is actually just a braindead move, because for 1, you need all the items in the bis list to reach that balance, and you wont. For 2, you're ignoring all the ebb and flow getting to that amount of crit, so while you might reach 5437 crit somehow, you will inevitably ignore other stats in the process and you're gonna be worse off because of it

I always think of stats in any game like this: you could have 100% crit, but if you’re hitting for like 1 damage, then it doesn’t mean much. Or hitting 100 times faster for that much won’t do much. But like a ton of damage but no crit can also not be as great. And the only way you can figure it out simming.

And there’s no way you can figure that out by hitting a dummy for infinite hours. But a computer can do infinite iterations in a short period.

given that ashes was basically equal to branch last season already once you re-statted for ashes

there is no way that ashes is worse when it's 30 ilvl higher

so any time you see branch crushing it's gonna be a crushing mastery gap
