I think the capstone should be 4 nodes. Flag, SBS, Sepsis, and Kingsbane. All tuned to offer relatively similar dps, but maybe KB and Flag a bit higher, maybe 5%. But Sepsis and SBS more "flat line" or "easy to pull off".

Branch is the best on use, but ashes doesn't have a distracting mini game so it's a reasonable/competitive alternative if you can get it. Iirc, the tree passive trinkets are slightly different and are marginally better or worse in different scenarios. Brand is best in ST, hourglass is best in m+, and pips splits the difference.

In my personal opinion - i don't see any reason it's better than outlaw, other than maybe single target boss dmg. In larger pulls, I can't imagine sub isn't ahead. It's just in a fine spot.

hekili not so hot on sin. but if you don't care about ultra-min-maxing you can trade out some talents to simplify the rotation/opener as you learn it. I'd suggest looking for that and taking builds that have as few buttons as possible, then working up, rather than running hekili as a learning tool
