Id think the hardest part about TCing, is prolly the trial and error that goes into finding the optimal apl's, and from an outsiders prespective, it probably hard because it requires you to have a really good system for source control and monitoring+comparing diffs.

im a 4th year cs student, so not a working pro, but heavily interested.
The math required for practical ml is difficult sure, but you almost never engage with it, specially with current libraries like torch and tensorflow/keras, which hide alot of the backprop math behind a nice "frontend" api for the dev. The ml maths are are super useful for understanding how it works and reading through research papers since alot of them dont bother to explain the math (it usually just there to prove something is viable). Not to mention with ML the math is alot more multivar calc and statistic.

Simming wow combat on the other hand, theres no need for differentials and back prop, its all multiplication and addition. (again i have no clear view, really just from an outsider presepctive)
