They made sure he was reluctant to accept the mantle of Warchief in Thrall's absence (despite there being far more closer friends to Thrall like Vol'jin at the time) and seemingly start to build on that aforementioned realization of what his father stood for. In Cata he spent the entirety being a firm but fair leader, going so far as to condemn Sylvanas' methods against the Gilneans. Then in MoP he just shifts completely into I must be a warmonger because it's my destiny.

Its a design thing though. Like what's the gameplay of the "base" class supposed to be. Borrowed power would be balanced against itself and sometimes under the assumption you cant have everything. Alot of DH's well received traits were also recycled into the later expansion. I can definitely see it being tricky filling out entire trees that don't just make them fire 20 eyebeams constantly in all directions lol.
