I would say usually silver, as bronze chests make such a mess. Silver chests are easier to open often. Gold chests can be good if you are really running out of space though.

Also, if lower than level 20, it wouldn't hurt to not open any chests and shovel them all away (but hold onto the keys for later, always 5-merge too)

It's definitely pretty popular to do, either with tool boxes or the green trees

You'll need to put the toolbox (or green tree) at the same place where you normally collect your energy. You'll have to chop or mine away the tree or rock. Then just drag a new item over to it whenever you want to swap it out.

It can definitely be a game changer to store energy for later use. It lets you regenerate energy longer because you aren't always collecting it
