You can merge almost anything and try to 5 merge as much as you can. Try not to open Toolboxes until later. Open Silver Chests instead of Gold Chests. Buy Premium Land with your Gems for extra loots and space.

You don't need to add people as a friend. Just launch the activity in farming-activity or any voice chat, and ask people on the text channel for help. They just need to visit you and click on the button. It's nice to visit back if you can 🙂
