what GPU is it you have?

the F suffix at the end of a CPU SKU does mean no graphics but that isn't that big of a deal. Only time it comes into use is when troubleshooting the dedicated GPU any time it runs into problems you at least have a backup that can (or should) be able to provide an image but these KF/F SKU CPUs won't allow that. Other than that 99% of the time the dedicated GPU should be in use. I even have my 9800X3D's AMD graphics turned off within the BIOS as currently I have no need for it since the 7900 XTX I have will do the graphics crunching

looking at the specs all I see different to a 9070 XT is doubling of the VRAM. 32GB vs 16GB but its still GDDR6 and I don't think that would honestly make much of a difference if there was to be a gaming version of this. 9070 XT is already RDNA 4 full die so there isn't much room afaik to really push performance boundaries further, unless we were to see AMD pull a move similar to Vega 56 and 64 and then later releasing Vega VII which was like Vega 2.0 iirc

looks like it relates to the software ASUS motherboards support. Can't say I'm surprised. Always found the uninstallation process of ASUS Armory Crate extremely annoying, to the point I would rather nuke a whole Windows install seeing as the uninstall tool doesn't remove everything. Sad part is users with ROG Ally handhelds or laptops kind of have little choice on using it as it can offer some key functionality from what I have heard so yeah, real bummer there but just further shows why I don't install that... crapware. I even recommend owners of new ASUS motherboards go into their BIOS and make sure ASUS Armory Crate is disabled, along with any other software ASUS may try to push before booting up their PC maybe for the first time

do you mean that in a good or bad sense? result looks good but I'd be curious to see how well it runs with all the same settings but at 4K. 5090 might not even be getting tested properly if there is any game engine related limits - one of the hidden limits that no CPU or GPU can pass. Could have the fastest CPU and GPU available but if a game isn't going to allow more than say 400 FPS and you expect lets say 550 FPS it won't do it or if it does the game breaks. Stuff like cloth physics and maybe even interactions with objects and NPCs

I had a quick look and they’re all pretty big differences - even at 1440p where the 5090 probably is getting CPU bottlenecks.

Was there any result you thought was “close”.

Both GPUs are really good in their own right.

The gap was growing as the video went on but there were some much closer than I expected, yeah. Also, I was looking at the 1% lows

Keep in mind this is Nvidia's current flagship/halo tier (whatever you want to call it) facing off against the 9070 XT that is mid range to high end and supposed to compete with a 5070 Ti and yet there are a few games tested with single figure differences in the 1% lows, something you previously said was important, perhaps even more important than the average FPS figure itself. Obviously other games where the gap was 40%+ on the 1% lows is where the 5090 shows its brute power but we're still only talking around 40-47% with Stellar Blade being the one exception being over 100% while the 5090 costs more than 3x that of a 9070 XT

meanwhile the difference on the average FPS ranges from 21-118%. 21% of a difference between two GPUs that shouldn't be directly compared against each other is hilarious! As I said though, same test but 4K I probably won't be laughing nearly as much

I don’t think its a CPU bottleneck as the settings from that channel tend to be ultra so the GPU should come into play more but yeah, there are some other factors at play for sure like what is going on with Stellar Blade to be over 100% difference in both average and 1% lows? That’s easily the 9070 XT’s heftiest defeat to the 5090 in the video

AMD made it clear they are no longer going after the high end market

So every AMD gpu this gen is low - mid range

I think AMD should make a return to the high end market, even if only to release a GPU that can give Nvidia’s 80 SKU a hard time. Neither the 5080 or 5090 have competition this gen from AMD’s latest GPUs, though saying that the 9070 XT isn’t too far off the 5080 and in terms of value for money the 9070 XT has both the 5070 Ti and 5080 effectively beat.
I really don’t know what Nvidia were thinking putting the 5070 Ti and 5080 so close together specs wise

TIL Steam's metrics for monitoring performance has been available all this time... idk how long for but I went into Steam's settings to see if it was available and it was. My initial thought was its still in beta so I was going to wait a bit longer. So glad that isn't the case though

already tested it using FSR and Frame Generation and it seems to pick it up very well. Pretty much to a point I can almost consider installing future drivers as driver only rather than a full install or partial. Just wish other launchers could offer metrics monitoring like what Steam does. A few offer very basic monitoring by comparison or nothing at all

XMP and EXPO are pretty much the same. Only XMP profiles are made for Intel hardware while EXPO is AMD (as of AM5) so as long as you enabled it all is good and you can ignore the warning it gives

again I wouldn't worry about that too much. Some users will overclock their hardware to achieve higher scores in benchmarks like this and as you will find on 3DMark too. There is also other factors at play like silicon lottery (it really is a thing) and making sure drivers are fully up to date. I'd also recommend installing any software your SSD supports that allows checking for updates to its firmware and updating it (if applicable)

one thing I should add is that people still appear to be having issues with Nvidia's latest drivers, especially on older hardware so while keeping drivers up to date is usually recommended, if you notice any issues while gaming on your 3080 that you think may relate to drivers use DDU to remove what you previously installed and install the 566.36 driver from December 2024 (yeah, really a driver that is some 7 months or so old now...) seems to be the recommended path for those not on RTX 50 series cards

but in most cases when getting a cheaper board worse case is you dont boot because you have to update the drivers

Yeah you should only put CPUs in a board that the manufacturer has rated it for. They always have a compatibility list available on their support pages.

@normal plover be sure to keep the power plan at the default balanced plan and have that CPU power setting you change revert back but yeah, BIOS updates and chipset drivers should help otherwise it could be a CPU or motherboard issue

if on Windows 11 there is a newer power mode option that shows when on the balanced power plan where you can select power saving, balanced or best performance. Not sure if it actually does anything but if you want you could always configure it to balanced - best performance

yeah, since Zen 3 AMD recommended the use of the balanced power plan but the power modes are either a separate thing or oddly the same thing as power plans but different. There isn't much about them, if anything more confusion

balanced power plans are especially recommended for anyone that happens to use either a 7900X3D, 7950X3D, 9900X3D or 9950X3D as using high performance power plan will allow all cores to run while disabling the software scheduling AMD implemented to help those CPUs while gaming select the 3D V Cache cores and not the frequency cores that they would otherwise default to with Windows scheduling (as that would select the faster of the two chiplets - that being the frequency chiplet). Not ideal for those CPUs

For Benchmarks I like to use Max OC but I didn’t have time tonight as for my CPU it’s BIOS Level and then for the GPU it can take several runs and restarts by doing the highest OC and then working down if the game crashes.

For everyday use / gaming, I leave the CPU stock for lowest temps but the GPU has a very small OC.

Which atm is +108 MHz on the Core versus my max OC which is +370 MHz Core & +2000 Memory
