sorry I haven't been sharing much on my new 7900 XTX. So far it has been great but ran into a problem with a game. The Division 2 appears to crash my whole system. Why? I don't know. Only conclusion I have come to is the GPU is attempting to draw more power than my 650W power supply can handle. I've even checked the event logs and found nothing out of the ordinary so the solution? Went and bought myself a new power supply in the hopes this fixes things and my system becomes more stable than it ever was. Seasonic Prime TX-850 was the power supply I bought so it should be capable and then some with all the features it has in dealing with my 7900 XTX and future 7800X3D rebuild and it has a 12 year warranty so I trust this thing fully

Hope it works out. I kinda just dropped the whole xtx thing and now I'm holding off till I can snag a 4090 fe or gamerock card (only 2 that'll fit my case oof)

I plan to just use a 4k 120hz tv as a monitor so yeah.

I'd wait on a 4080 Ti tbh. Going to be close to a 4090 but cost less and still be very competitive - if previous 80 Ti and 90 tier cards have been anything to go by. This time I don't see Nvidia splitting the VRAM by half of the 4090 (24GB) on the 80 Ti since the 4080 has 16GB so will be interesting to see when that comes around but yeah, most of the 4090 are huge so will want to double check it can fit your case

And true on the 4080 ti. I remember the 3080ti got quite close to the 3090 but looking at the headroom between the 4080 and 4090 I feel like it would still lag behind purposely.

ok, I stand corrected MSI Ventus is 322mm but if you got 330mm max you are going to want at least a thumb's sized space between the end of the GPU cooler and front fan/radiator/case I think

When I had a 5700xt it used to suffer crashes on the early drivers. Not sure if that's the same issue with these new cards.

hmm were these full crashes that required you to reach around the back of the system to flick off and and the power supply? if so then yeah is what I'm facing right now but oddly with only one specific game though at this point I'm almost certain it is power supply related. There was going to come a time my little 650W power supply was no longer enough and tbh I think I took a major risk with it during owning the 6800 XT Red Devil. PowerColor recommended a minimum 850W for that but never once did it trip or did I notice any stability issues but this 7900 XTX seems a whole different beast

at least now I'll be ready for triple 8 pin cards going forward. This power supply I'm getting apparently has space for 6x 8 pin

For me it was BSOD and random shutdown but the later drivers fixed those issues. I wouldn’t need to switch off the power supply though. I usually just stick with whatever PSU wattage Nvidia or AMD recommend just to be safe.

650w is probably not enough for 7900 XTX.

You spend $20-50 extra now and you don’t have to ever buy a new PSU again unless you go for the absolute top end

Even then- you can get away with it while gaming

I was still in that mindset when I got a 750w psu but clearly GPUs are only getting more power hungry as time is going on.

Definitely been frustrating, all I want to do is game without all this hassle. another thing with XFX cards they are pretty long coming in at 340mm (34cm) so you will want to make sure your case has that kind of room while factoring in fans and/or AIO cooler at the front too

to my surprise I was able to get a benchmark to run last night even with all the power supply related issue I'm putting up with. Though I'm finding it odd how I can run FH5 at the highest settings (minus ray tracing) yet I try to benchmark The Division 2 at the highest possible settings too and it shuts down on me. Both benchmarks will likely get similar results and even in game possibly get higher FPS so won't that result in similar power draw?

I once went from a Core i7 4790k to a Ryzen 7 3700X without reinstalling Windows. Windows was just like "yeah whatever" and booted anyways. From there, I installed chipset drivers and all was good. I'm fully aware that this isn't officially supported, and is quite cursed lol. I just wanted to see if Windows 10 was capable of that.

tried some additional troubleshooting on my PC last night as I was made aware that my power supply has a cable that lets me communicate with it over Corsair's iCUE software. I finally got that connected, after about 6+ years of it not being connected and was also told that by default my power supply was set to run on multi rail OCP and that I should change it to single rail OCP, done that too hoping it might have brought some stability to my system but nope, seems The Division 2 wants to remain the problem. I can't even change graphics settings to max without it cutting out on me now. Surely one specific game can't be at fault for this. Really finding all this odd and very off putting at this point

sure does but even with the amount of attempts the devs have had to fix it over the years it still causes crashes to desktop so stability isn't quite there. Though I've found that with a lot of games that support more than one API for some reason

any time in the past when I played The Division 2 a lot more than I do these days (kinda burnt out with the game) it would crash on me almost without fail and the worst thing is it was totally random too. I could be having a blast in a mission then all of sudden crash and it seems quite a widespread issue across the game's community. Mainly downloaded the game to get some benchmarks in seeing as no one else seems to have covered the game with the 7900 XTX yet. Not sure I will play it though

AMD hyped it up a bit too much. Doesn't quite deliver what they showed during the announcement back in November but it is still impressive imo and coming in cheaper than a 4080 for similar performance I'd say makes it difficult to recommend anyone a 4080, unless of course they rely on the feature set Nvidia GPUs offer. Also, I find it pretty difficult to detect any CPU bottleneck at play since I am gaming at 4K and maxed (non-RT) settings. Pretty much every game I should be GPU bound

I say that owning a halo tier card right now and honestly it still holds true. Unless AMD and Nvidia find a way to really make their halo tier cards worth buying and not so over the top with a price tag to match I'd highly recommend going no higher than the flagship/high end 80/800 series cards. Still going to get most of the performance but likely at a much better price

heh, yeah was going to say. Custom loop is crazy expensive and requires some maintenance. I'd rather stick to gaming and run either an air cooler or AIO and not worry about leaks in the loop that could be very expensive. that is wrong if you have a HDMI 2.1 supported monitor. That supports up to 48Gbps vs Displayport 1.4's 32.4Gbps. I say up to on HDMI 2.1's part as some devices and displays don't support the full 48 Gbps and as a result may mean you aren't getting the full feature set HDMI 2.1 can offer. Meanwhile the upcoming Displayport 2.1 supports up to 80 Gbps but like HDMI 2.1 there will be limitations. AMD's latest GPUs, RDNA 3/RX 7000 series are the only GPUs as of right now that support DP 2.1 at any spec. (I believe AMD are using UHBR 13.5 - which is 13.5 Gbit/s bandwidth per lane or 54 Gbps max bandwidth) but also, as of this post there are no displays that support DP 2.1

The only issues with firmware update are if you use the controller via Bluetooth with devices that use very old Bluetooth tech. For such usages you should be able to downgrade the firmware if needed.

if it is based off the reddit post there was more to this story. I believe the RMA process for an AMD GPU bought directly through AMD store goes through Digital River first and there is a chance you will receive these generic types of responses. People told the poster to push further and demand for a real human response and i think they eventually got it, though it took an AMD rep on Reddit to sort it out

Both AMD and PowerColor seem to be investigating the cause of the 110c hotspot temperatures and the crazy thing is most users I have seen on reddit talk about it with their experience the GPU temperatures seems alright but it is definitely not so good with the hotspot temperature and that leads me to believe the cooler just isn't making adequate contact with the die and that is what is causing these crazy deltas of 40c or so between GPU and hotspot temperatures. Some even reporting an issue to do with Displayport that I find almost comical where the 20 pin power (usually inactive) may also be a cause. Solution to that would be to use a quality cable as I'm sure VESA scrapped that 20 pin power way back in DP 1.1 or 1.2 standard. Luckily my 7900 XTX Reference model seems alright. At most I've seen a temperature delta around 15c while stock. If I increase power limit by +15% that creeps up to a 20c delta but that isn't really worth doing imo

just tried something I was a little nervous to do with my 7900 XTX. Through AMD Software I set a custom fan curve, max fan speed to 35% and ran around FH5 for 20 minutes or so and temperatures only got to 73c on current GPU temperature and 86c on hotspot temperature. Completely stock with the default fan curve it runs at about 60% fan speed or so and both temperature metrics tend to read around 70c and 82c respectively. 3-4c increase for near half the fan curve is pretty nice imo. Very quiet too

the ray tracing on Cyberpunk 2077 honestly scares me. Been testing that game most of yesterday to see the difference in performance btween RT ultra and ultra non RT and I get 3x the FPS with RT off. Going from 20~ fps to what seems like a pretty consistent 60+ FPS

I don't think it will harm the GPU but for you to need 100% fan speed that is concerning, it will likely sound like a jet fighter taking off. I have my 7900 XTX set to 50% fan speed maximum and it keeps GPU temperature between 70-73c and hotspot temperature can reach up to 85c. This while everything else is left stock

I'd be cautious with the 7900X3D as it will use two CCD and there were reports that the dual CCD on both the 7900X and 7950X were impacting performance on games to the point it was recommended to disable one of these CCDs, effectively making them slightly faster and much more expensive 7600X and 7700X CPUs

I believe so but other than being the highest binned chips to a point both CCDs are verified to run at exactly the same frequency and not lower like was intended with these CPUs I don't see a fix coming with this generation of CPU and it may well take AMD to advance the CCD from 8 cores to 12 or even 16 cores to properly fix this while running a 12 or 16 core CPU without performance loss. That in turn would also mean no more latency issues too if there was up to 16 cores on the one CCD and would increase the core count to up to 32 cores with dual CCD. Would be like Zen 2 to Zen 3 all over again where they went from 2 CCX, each with 4 cores and their own cache to 1 CCX with 8 cores and a larger combined cache

something I forgot to mention is with AMD also launching lower powered, non-X versions of their existing 7000 series CPUs you could always wait a little longer for those to release and save a little on the 7700 instead of buying the 7700X. Saving itself may not be that big but all you loss is 100MHz on the max boost clock, you are still talking over 5 GHz (5.3 to be exact) while default TDP drops from 105W to 65W. If the 7800X3D didn't exist and I didn't have an existing system with an AMD CPU in it already that is what I'd have probably done

If I was to look at future proofing I think I'd go beyond 4K but try to maintain OLED/QD-OLED and 240Hz so 5K (5120x2880) and 8K (7680x4320) over time. Though I don't think I'll venture into ultrawide monitors and their resolutions

Beyond 4K imo is not needed for 27” because the GPU power needed goes up exponentially. Rather strike the balance of 4K at 240-500fps

just tried a plague tale requiem on my 7900 XTX. 4K ultra settings it played great, averaging around 60-75 FPS but after digging around the graphics settings I was disappointed to find that TAAU is enabled with seemingly no way to turn it off and game at native 4K. Had TAAU set to ultra quality so it is close to 4K (1800p iirc?) but that will mean if the devs do find a way to allow it to be turned off again FPS will drop below 60. Though tbf it is quite an improvement over what I saw when I played it on my 6800 XT
