Microsoft are a trillion dollar company. They know how to make money. If Game Pass was a big loss for them, it wouldn't exist. It's a very valuable service for them.

Tons of people sign up for Game Pass. Many of those would not normally buy the games included, either because they don't want to spend £60 when they're playing something else, or they simply can't afford it. But £15/month is affordable to them, or a small enough amount that they don't mind if they don't get as much time to play the games.

Lots of those people then go on to buy DLC. More than would have bought the DLC if Game Pass didn't exist.

They tell their friends who also sign up. People lock themselves in for 2-3 years at a time. While on Xbox (or PC) for that time they buy other things. That's all money going to Microsoft.

Getting such a huge bargain from Game Pass builds brand loyalty. Those people are far more likely to buy the next Xbox or stay with Xbox for a longer period of time.

They're not stupid.

People with not much money deciding which console to buy. Hmm, PS5 and £70 games, or an Xbox with a relatively cheap subscription and hundreds of games. A super accessible finance package for two years also an option.

That gets people on board. Lots of people. People = money.

1 - Xbox Live Gold is a subscription needed to play multiplayer games, unless they are free-to-play. Then you don't need Xbox Live Gold
2 - Game Pass is a subscription to give you access to 450+ games to download and play (among other benefits).
3 - Game Pass Ultimate includes Xbox Live Gold and is the best value for gaming on Xbox. Game Pass doesn't typically include DLC, but you can buy the DLC at a good discount when you have Game Pass.
4 - You need to buy your own Internet or have Internet access to take advantage of these features and subscriptions
