I think that social media has made people (or at least those who are rich enough, or live in a country/situation where they have the time to) focus too much of their lives on needing external validation rather than trying to focus on validating themselves and that in a sense we have regressed rather than continued to 'evolve'. The technology certainly continues to evolve, but we are also becoming gradually more reliant upon it to meet our daily emotion chemical reaction (whatever emotion that might) quota rather than how we did previously.

I feel sorry for some born since 2000, and more so for those born since 2007/08 and how their lives are becoming gradually less and less their own and more aligned with what or organisation or 'fake [insert blank]' is telling them is right. (To clarify, by fake I mean organisations that profit on people's insecurities and rather than trying to help, are likely fuelling more insecurity.)

It's almost impossible now to go anywhere, or even have a private conversation and believe that nothing is watching, recording or listening to you and using that data in some way to try and profit from you.

When an individual dies, the organisations simply move onto someone else's insecurities.

I'll make a comparison between food and knowledge.

Humans for many thousands of years were hunter/gatherers, they had to hunt each day and would only eat what was hunted, however whilst inconvenient, being able to no longer be hungry likely created something similar to satisfaction. Overtime we increased the convenience of getting food. Now you don't even have to leave your home but if you're in an urban environment, have up to 100+ ways to get food quickly and with minimal effort.

This has likely caused a negative effect somewhere along the line and may have even regressed us.

Knowledge from the internet was a great thing and I still think that it's a good thing, however continually taking the knowledge and putting the knowledge into continually smaller chunks is a double edged sword, it can increase engagement, but can result in things being taken out of context more easily due to the lack of time to give background, a detailed explanation. The ease of posting information on the internet without it being verified is also a concern and can ruin people's lives.

On the other hand, having information more available in smaller chunks, because it can increase engagement, especially from those who may not be the target demographic. But I wouldn't be surprised if constantly getting a quick 'fix' of information from things like YT shorts, TikTok, Vines etc may overtime re-engineer our societies and potentially cause evolution to change the way our brain processes the information.

Ok I'll break this down, as I made multiple points within the same reply that you responded to.

1. Whether people believe that they are control of their lives (I don't mean in a metaphysical/biological/religious manner as that's a rabbit hole), social media now affects almost every aspect of a person's lives to varying levels. Currently people still may have some level of control, but whatever they do, their technology is continually tracking data about them which is then stored and processed somewhere. That data is used by private and public sector organisations and also can affect government policy (which then affects the individual too), Look at the social credit system that has been implemented in some countries to give to an idea of the possibility of how this data could be used and how that affects personal control.

As time goes on, I would suggest that people will have less control of their lives. Look at the current 'subscription' market model, almost every service is becoming subscription based rather than individuals owning products. I don't remember who said the quote but it was "In the future you'll own nothing and be happy".

2. My response about biology is to an earlier point in that reply:

"I think that social media has made people (or at least those who are rich enough, or live in a country/situation where they have the time to) focus too much of their lives on needing external validation rather than trying to focus on validating themselves and that in a sense we have regressed rather than continued to 'evolve'.
