My honest opinion is to play what you want. Mechanics can carry you to 2k with practice. That's not to say that using eye and convoke setups wouldn't have been easier... but for standard 2k you should be fine.

Markers plays above 2k in 2s as resto using draught and oath for his restokitty builds, with flourish. Plenty of unconventional things with that guy.

For new players or unskilled however you want to rank yourself...I REALLY recommend just spending a few days practicing wild charge. Focus your games on wild charge. Then add in things like maim+charge when you can charge enough to not rely on guardian anymore.
