I have two minds. I was born permissionless but accept the flow, that we need to bring people in through a gate that makes sense for them, then they can just switch. Onboarding is difficult though and KYC brings trust in this specific circumstance. I'll be the first one to promote decentralization, privacy, and permissionless systems, I built and launched one of the largest ones, but accept that onboarding is still one of the biggest problems in crypto.

Crypto is still less than 2% of finance. 1% globally. There is a lot of work to do.

My theory is bring people in and give them so much value, they will just move to permisonless and something more private later.

I can pay my rent in crypto even which I could not do before. But I think that is only possible in big cities rn. What I think will happen is when investment advisors can offer crypto to people through their IRAs, 401Ks, etc... then things will start to shift more. The underlying privacy and permissionless tech is not quite there yet, but I do think it will happen. It's just the adoption question. The masses trust their investment advisors - that is a KYCd path, and if that is the gate for now so be it... once they are in they can decide if they want to keep paying 1% to an advisor or move things to a wallet and figure out how to become more independent/private. But gotta get people in first.
