using malverk is definitely the best way to go about it. the "modding starter pack" link pinned here should give you guidance on the basics of balatro modding in general, and then the malverk mod should hopefully be well-documented enough for you to pick up without much trouble

(malverk is a framework specifically for replacing vanilla sprites in-game)

it's a couple of different tools. lovely injector is a generic tool that allows for the patching of any game made in LOVE 2d, while Steamodded is a specific tool that takes advantage of lovely injector to provide a more robust modding API for specifically Balatro

2. use draw > parallel gradiation on a new layer with whatever gradient you want
3. duplicate the layer and flip the gradient as desired
4. mask one of the gradients to the pattern
