However I fucked up my system by getting into a dependency hell and not updating for three months and for some reason the dependency hell returns if I use --getbinpkg. So I don't.

In addition to USE flags, you can also set CFLAGS that are transferred to the compiler and add some additional minor tweaking and optimizations, for example using newer SSE (e.g. sets of instructions that are available on newer cpus; binary distros tend to avoid newer sets because incompatible binaries get SIGILL on older cpus), or using -O3 and -fomit-frame-pointer.

Think of gentoo as LFS with really nice tooling (In fact I kept coming back from arch because the tooling is so good).

And one of the best things is, you can make a local repo and easily write ebuilds (basically package metadata and build instructions) yourself. It also nicely integrates git and non-git versions putting them under same name and making git package version be 9999.

What's funny is I installed gentoo when the go-to kernel configuration method they offered was manual. So I also learned how kernel configuration works.
