It was tested, and it's not bugged, the content for it is just a part of CU4. CU4 was supposed to go live before Give and Gather, but all of the Switch 2 upgrade processes prevented us from submitting it when we wanted to.

It is still a negative experience, but in this case the approval process is out of our control. What we CAN control is giving folks lots of gumdrops and goodies when it finally goes live.

There are two types of presents.

One can be opened right away (don’t for switch). You get these by giving the generic holiday gifts

One can only be opened after the 24th. These are specifically from the characters you gift their individual present to.

Some people mass exchange the first kind and some do every day. You can exchange them any time before the end of the event

The reason why Switch players are advised not to open any gifts at the moment is because the new 2025 G&G furniture is earned by opening the presents under the tree, and since Nintendo has not approved CU4 yet, Switch players can only receive previous years' furniture. Essentially, you're advised to wait as to not waste presents getting old stuff

Since you're on switch don't take rewards out from under the tree until cu4

TLDR for Switch Players:
Yes you can gift
The ordinary gift make sure to give it to a main character (not a visitor) in order to get 3 gummies
Gummies are not being given on daily tasks, Sunblink will send an email with extra gummies
DO NOT open gifts from the tree until CU4 update
DO NOT choose WMM or Cogi for the character gift until CU4 update
All potential bugs around the event may be fixed with the CU4 update

One of the issues with the Wish me mell and Cogimyun gifts (on Switch) is that Cogimyun's gift option is appearing like a duplicate Wish me mell gift option in Cinnamoroll's dialogue. (People think they are choosing WMM but actually get a Cogimyun gift.)
However, Switch players have still been able to gift Cogimyun her character gift and gift Wish me mell her character gift. They just need to double-check which gift they actually received if they chose a WMM option. (Edit: If neither gift is showing, restarting the game may make the gift appear.)

someone chose wmm gift and received pochacco's gift, they weren't able to gift neither pochacco or wmm until they rebooted the game and wmm's gift showed up and was able to be gifted as intended, so there is something wrong with it beyond just cogimyun/wmm

The gifts under the tree cannot be opened yet, but the invisible ones are still a no go unless you love repeats. There's 20 characters counting DLC, you got enough time if you play daily.

just keep gifting character gifts and the common gifts anyway so you can stock up!

on 25th we'll be able to open all the gifts too, even the regular ones with furniture that we'll have leftover or if some prefer to wait, all at once

Switch players shouldn’t give holiday gifts to visitors yet because it doesn’t return gumdrops properly, but otherwise it does not matter whom you give a holiday gift to. The gifts give the same stuff in return no matter who receives it.

I tend to prefer this format because it leaves plenty of gumdrops to get the older items while still giving you plenty of the new ones. I don't have to budget for both kinds when looking at the currency

The Holiday Gifts are just this event's game mechanic to obtain 2025 G&G items, by gifting one to a Friend you can open the present they give you in return under the tree, and receive a furniture item. As far as I know there's a system in place for you to receive 1x of every single item before you start getting duplicates, but it's all RNG after that. The hearts should have no effect, unsure why they're there tbh

I think the most likely explanation is that the items have hidden tags and that some of the hidden tags match certain characters’ likes. (Hangyodon, TOPHAT… anyone else?)
Though I don't know for sure.

I do know that hidden tags are a thing. There was a short period of time where a nul tag was showing on some things, and a dev mentioned it was supposed to be hidden and marked things as wearable by nuls.

It's an improvement over last year, where the bears were locked behind playing the event for a second year.

There's no confirmation that you do not get the bears if you max friendship after giving the gift, but it might be one of the things they'll be checking on when they're back in the office next week.

One thing to note is that bears, like the 50th Anniversary Original items, are not tradeable; you have to get them through the event. (It doesn't block items from being sent through Sunblink Mail, just not between players.)

We asked about this last year for the wiki and I can confirm that this is how it works:

When opening Holiday Gifts for the first time during the event, players are guaranteed to receive exactly one copy of each furniture item belonging to that year's event collection. The order in which these items are obtained is randomized. After the player has acquired one of every furniture item in the current year's collection, any additional copies of those items obtained from subsequent Holiday Gifts are determined entirely by random chance (RNG).

There are also 19 items for each year of the event (57 items total) that are in the currently unopenable presents. One for each character. We're still waiting on confirmation but the Sweaters and Bears (past items) are in the Best Frend present. Based on silhouettes it looks like the new items are stockings

We don't know what items will give them yet because this is the first year with the kits. (The first birthday with kits for Apple Arcade was Cinnamoroll; they were added in time for Chococat's birthday for Switch and Steam.)

It could be possible, for example, that Big Challenges' items include Mount Hothead stuff because of his likes and how his gift boxes do give obsidian shards. But we won't know until the celebration starts, probably around the 16th.

I don’t think there’s anything to be done about it other than leaving feedback, and I guess there’s a thread for that apparently, so I’ll leave it there, and keep stocking up on daily loot in the meantime 🤣
