Makes sense! Honestly I was sold the moment I realized "hey, this AC-like game has a jump button!"
I hadn't even been introduced to the adventure side of the gameplay just yet lol
When suggesting clothing, furniture, or avatars, is it more helpful to the team if 2D mock-ups are provided, or is that a no-no, is that overstepping, like you guys want to design the new thing from scratch? I was thinking that it would be cute to do mini-Discord events where a dev names an item, and everyone has to draw what they hope it looks like and the best one gets added.
If we do it as part of an event, that's a lot easier, because we can add in our legal disclaimers (check out what we did here: #1400120802262913034 message) -- if it's just submitted, we probably would avoid using it because folks could get upset that we stole it / didn't credit them the way they wanted / didn't compensate them.
We've certainly discussed doing some community-designed things before, and I belieeeeve @open jay might actually be cooking something like that up for the future!
At the risk of being a touch derivative, perhaps an in-game design editor?
Hey guys. I was wondering have you guys ever thought of adding bulk crafting to the game? It would make it easier to craft especially a lot of items at once.
On another note, that's already a thing
@raw jewel @shut abyss Please remember to put suggestions in your platform’s #\feedback channel instead. 💚 This channel is for asking questions about the game design & development only (and they don’t answer roadmap questions about planned/future content).
Really? Where do I unlocked that?
For Switch, feel free to use #1327458062499582025 !
what was the inspiration for nuls? i love them so much and even more when they’re included in quests 🥰
@deep mesa I saw your October interview regarding “one more” extremophile/greenhouse upgrade. Is that still a long ways away yet?
Please do not ping Sunblink staff.
I was wondering whether it is alot of work to make different colored variantes of furniture because for us as players it seems quit simple but I was wondering whether its time intense
Some furniture customization options are easier than others. For example, the more custom patterned options you see on Cottage and Antique sets take more time to author than color tweak options like the painted wood options on the Home Essentials set.
We do a few things to help speed up the production:
- Try and share customization options between sets. For example, the wood options you see on the Cottage set show up all over the place, like the Scholastic, Home Essentials and Jamboree sets.
- We've built a lot of tooling around being able to easily assign/edit/add customization options.
A question: would a petition of sorts make headway for Sanrio to allow mentions of Poron as Cinnamoroll’s sister in game? They could make a really cute quest line.
This is so interesting thanks for explaining
i would love this! i have alot of furniture ideas that i would love to have some frutiger aero aesthetic things in my furniture collection.
i think that you guys should ponder on making frutiger aero style furniture in the game. i had some example pics to send in but i cannot send them
Please use #1431330716225900695 for suggesting furniture. I'll fix your roles so you can add your feedback with images there.
this would be SO cool
There is this famous south park clip „I don‘t play world of warcraft I play hello kitty island adventure“
Is the title of this game a coincidence or a reference to this clip? 😂
@brazen path ⬆️ Who knows.
I was going to make a decor suggestion in feedback, but it just occurred to me that I don't know off the top of my head-- Are customizable items able to have different silhouettes (i.e. a customization that changes the 3D shape of the item slightly) or has everything we've seen up to now been just skin/texture replacement?
Skin/texture/shader. Changing model would be a new system we’d have to develop.
Is it possible that pochacho is so obsessed with gudetama because eggs have alot of proteins and pochacho is into fitness?
it’s funny that they’re polar opposites lol, one is super athletic and the other is super lazy
I was wondering whether the plan for the future is for steam and switch to catch up to apple arcade when it comes to content or whether you always want the apple arcade to be ahead. I learned recently that the apple arcade gets content earlier because you have to give them regularly new content for contract reasons. But what I mean are the big content chunks like the city update etc
Is generative AI being used in any development processes or translation services?
Edit: I know what my bio says, I'm not picking a fight, I swear.
I would be surprised if not I don‘t know a single person who codes without ai 😂
Moppu has definitely been one of the cutest characters added I can't get enough of the game now and I had been feeling some what burnt out after finishing the main story line 🩷🐻❄️
hi! I was curious about this year's luck and lanterns theme. A lot of the furniture seems arab inspired
theyre all such unique pieces this time!
Several of our events change up their focus/theme each year — you’ll likely see a lot of new interpretations and looks for events over the upcoming months (Springtime Celebration, Colorblaze Carnival, etc). Since we have a set event schedule, we’re doing our best to expand the types of things seen across the events we have. This year’s Luck & Lanterns definitely focuses on a different type of lantern and a different type of luck/wish/intention than the past two years.
this makes me so happy!! thank you for being so inclusive! <3
Several of our community members asked for it last year, and we try and do what we can when we’re able 🥰 I’m glad you’re enjoying it!
Moppu's lines include modified references to a wide variety of games: Dota 2, Balatro, No Man's Sky, Final Fantasy VII and even Harvest Moon!
The list is so diverse, I suspect one or more developers are expressing their love for their favorite games. Is this true or am I thinking too much?
Regardless, I certainly didn't expect to see a reference to Harvest Moon. Huge respect!
hold on……..I caught most of these, but you’re telling me I missed a FFVII reference?? that’s my favorite game 😭
I don't want to spoil the whole sentence, just talk to Moppu a few times. Sooner or later, he'll say the right line. 😉
hiii love the game and ive been enjoying the dlc a lot. just one thing ive been curious about. is there a reason to why cogimyun's magical girl ability (for mini games) does not work for the mini games in wheatflour wonderland? or moppu's minigame?
I absolutely adore the mermaid tails in this game. Truth be told, it’s the reason why I picked it up! Came for the merfolk, stayed for everything! As a result, I’d like to ask how that came to be?
Mainly, why are mermaid tails in this game? Was Rainbow Resort planned to have them from the start, or did the team decide to do that instead of a diving suit at some point in development?
Also curious about other characters’ mermaid appearances. Were they inspired by any existing media, or were they made without that in mind? What made the team decide on only a select few having them? Any hope for the rest of the cast? Lastly, I can’t help but notice how prominent the mermaid tails are on the physical box art. What made that an important trait to display upfront?
Sorry if these are a lot of questions, I’m very passionate about this topic! Thank you for doing this in the first place! ❤️
Let me ask -- I know Moppu's game works a bit differently than other games esp around difficulty levels and reward tiers.
The short answer is that we love mermaids to! When we released, no other big open world games had really leaned into diving and underwater exploration. We knew we wanted it to be a big part of the game, and the mermaid tails made underwater exploration more colorful, fantasy-fulfilling, and immediately recognizable (that's part of why underwater is so heavily featured in the games original marketing).
Our early concepts for underwater form were super varied -- Badtz-maru with a shark tail, Kuromi with more of a squid look -- but that was too expensive animation wise to create entirely new rigs/animations. So we wound up with a more unified traditional mermaid tail as the base, and then we've done what we can to add more unique silhouettes and colors over time.
As far as the rest of the cast -- our goal is to have every character have a mermaid form. They're pretty costly to make, even if it's worth it. And that means we can only make a few at a time. There are more on the horizon, though!
Thank you so much for the answer Chelsea! Wow… I admire the team even more now. You put a ton of thought into that, and still are! Thank you all!
My apologies for asking another question so soon, but it popped in my head and I think this is the best time to ask. I promise it’ll be my last one for a while. The stamina gauge isn’t infinite as a mermaid, just significantly longer, and I’m curious if that is a design decision or a limitation of the game? If it’s a design choice, why so?
I have a question that isn’t strictly dev-related but I’m not sure where else to ask. Are there any plans to release more soundtracks with all of the music that isn’t currently available for streaming?
Here’s a previous answer to a similar question: #hkia-dev-and-design message
They'll probably release a third volume 3 when they have ~30 tracks.
Hi!! I was curious if there would ever be more development to characters/areas we already have. For example: handygoon doesn’t have any friends, i’d love for retsuko to have her own shop or something, same with big challenges and top hat. Or is there a possibility we get more of city town? I know that’s a lot of questions. I apologize and thank you in advance.
I don’t know if anyone reads this channel but developers, were there any scrapped characters/visitors? If so, can you tell us (it’s okay if you can’t)
One of the things I'd like to know about is the sound design of the game. At what points did you have to resort to a sound library, and when does foley come into play?
(I ask because there's a record scratch sound you hear in the game sometimes - I really hope a real record wasn't scratched lol)
I’m looking forward to seeing Cinnamoroll
How are the order of new visitors to be added determined? Are Sanrio the ones pushing for more Aggretsuko visitors over other characters?
yes, I think @subtle grotto talked about this in another channel, it is a Sanrio request i believe
I do remember this being said though I couldn’t find the post. It may have been on an archived channel because it’s been awhile
"That's a legit question, honestly" -- from our design lead. In the early days of the game, stamina was much more important for progression, so it made sense that each piece of the mermaid outfit was a noticeable improvement, but even all three didn't fully eliminate the need for stamina altogether.
We have done a lot of this, and will continue to do so!
I wouldn't say scrapped so much as characters that we didn't get approval for. I've always really wanted Gaopoweroo, for example, but due to licensing issues we aren't able to include many top faves in the game.
We did also have a few silly Flowls that wound up not making it into Wheatflour Wonderland.
There are several factors -- what we've gotten Sanrio approval for, how long it takes to make the visitors, how they tie in to various on-going storylines, etc. We usually try to bundle visitors together that are associated with certain characters, and then we often have one character set that's more of a 'trickle' (like when we were releasing Cinnamoroll visitors, and now Retsuko visitors)
Thanks for the reply. It’s super nice to hear insights from the team.
They denied Gaopoweroo?! 🥺 Can we know who else was denied by Sanrio that wasn't a collaboration character so we can pin it in #1431330625503363316 ?
Gaopoweroo is a collaboration character.
A dev channel where the devs ACTUALLY interact and answer questions from the community? Well, tickle me pink. I am very surprised.
If Sanrios denys a character is it always for licensing issues or is it sometimes because they thing a character would just not fit in the game?
I was wondering why we can‘t have flower candles that have patterns (I am not talking about rare candles)
My assumption is that since you guys would have to create a model for every combination of patterns and flowers then it would be too much work or is there another reason?
Was it ever considered or intended to have players engage in snowball fights? I was playing in my wife's world where she unlocked it but it looks like since she needs Moppu following her to throw them we would not be able to have a snowball fight, feels like a great opportunity to add some player interaction if it was possible.
(If I missed a possible way to do it please let me know!)
Is it intended that CDs and Comic Books only have the tag of their item type, or will those eventually be upgraded to include supplemental tags to cover more visitor requirements than just the two who ask specifically for comic books? ETA: Actually, is it even technically feasible within your software to make a CD playing count towards say, Icy Peak tag? It's more curiosity than an actual feature request.
Any chance we can hear more about this? Asking for a friend who adores the flowls and their dialog (it’s me, I’m the friend)
Hey there Sunblink! I love this game but as an adult and someone who got into this game a little late, will time limited items and exclusives still be accessible after this stops getting live support? Seeing events pass by is very discouraging knowing I don't have the time during certain parts of the year to invest time into playing
@burnt violet I think we're getting close to having enough unreleased tracks for another soundtrack release. Thanks for asking, and stay tuned!
How exciting!! Thanks for letting me know!!
In my headcannon there was a series of meetings between the teams at Sanrio, South Park and Sunblink about the name of the game and negotiations resulted in the South Park team getting early access and ending up stanning the game HARD.
This timeline only exists in my imagination but noone will ever convince me that it's not what happened. I need this to be true. 😂
My question is both too general and personal, but I really want to ask the developers.
Have you ever been on your way to the store on a weekend, doing everything as usual, and then you see a Hello Kitty t-shirt or other merch and you're like, "Oh my, I have to go to work tomorrow and finish something" or something like that?
Yes! 😂 Usually around the blind boxes or plushes. “Oh that could be a cute storyline for so-and-so!” “We should do a fruit theme for this event” “Hold on, isn’t that against brand guidelines???”
isn’t that against brand guidelines
Me turning over every piece of Pompom merch I find to check for his specific copyright characteristic
If it doesn't contain his charm point, can we really call it official Pompompurin merch?
Is there a specific reason why you add visitor outfits with events? Like was that an instruction by sanrio or did you just think it was fitting?
We had feedback for a long time that folks wanted to be able to change Visitor outfits, and this felt like a nice way to let there be a bit more variety, without necessarily needing to do it for every visitor all at once.
This is a question for the developers
So the Pride Board im on is considering doing a building contest for Pride month that is in game. We would be giving away a Pride merch item irl to the winner. Would we have to contact Sunblink to get permission to do this?
I have a question/idea. is this the correct place to share?
just want to ask one thing: Could there be a mod to retexture the speed potions into looking like coffee? Just like, a small lil jokey mod that suggests you're faster cause you're caffinated
If you want to make a suggestion, you should use your platform's feedback channel. For Apple Arcade, it's #1108858060534988980.
There are also some request threads in #1342152293939679343.
You can suggest changes to the game like this in #1327458373674864690.
What culture is colorblaze this year
I know Lighttime was Middle Eastern / Lunar New Year
hi! sorry if this has been asked before but are there any plans of adding new content to wheatflour wonderland (or any other future dlcs)?
I think its no culture this year but more neutral
There are a lot of crescent moons in the lunar celebration furniture. The two dividers on either side of the wheatflour dividers and the rugs are part of that set.
With Hello Kitty having gotten her own flowers and flower effect as part of her birthday, is there intent to do the same for the other characters, or was that a one-time thing since it was originally for the anniversary event?
Are we ever going to get the ability to craft more than the current 14 plush pals
I love how his lore in the game resembled his treatment by sanrio😂 was that by purpose?
iirc there was a whole interview article a while back where they chose him specifically because of this lore. something about Sunblink needing to ask Sanrio how to properly represent him, and even they had to make something up on the spot
Is there anywhere to get the key arts in high resolution? They’d make for cute wallpapers
Just a suggestion. that you should allow us to zoom in more on maps and enlarge the UI(coming from a legally blind person)
Please use your platform's feedback channel (that's #1327458062499582025 for console players) for feedback and suggestions.
The Switch actually does have a UI scale option, but only when docked. (Similarly, Mac/PC have UI scaling, but mobile devices do not.)
Sorry new to this disco and must've overlooked. Is it under settings?
Yes. I'm not sure if the appearance is different for docked Switches, but, at least for PC, the UI scaling is a slider at the top of the main Settings menu.
Thank you kindly!!
This is a question I've had for a while now, with HKIA getting active support for well over 2 years, I wanna ask:
How is the team handling burn out? After working on the same project for years, id imagine some of the team may feel worn out. How is that being taken care of? (If at all.)
And what keeps the development rewarding for the team? (Besides it being your jobs and all.)
I also wonder just how different the process is for both the writing/creative side vs the technical/engineering side. Sorry for the layered questions, I just love hearing about the processes that make up HKIA.
Great questions! The team has definitely gone through a few cycles of burnout— and maintaining creative energy on a project that we’ve now been working on for five whole years is also challenging.
We do a few things:
First, we’ve always had some compelling shorter term goals — launching on Arcade, then launching on PC/Switch, then PS5, then Wheatflour Wonderland, and now City Town (and the major update after City Town). Having those shorter term goals gives us that excited feeling of “something new” but also that relieving reward of “something finished”. Those are critical in a live game!
We also have a two day “hackathon” after each six week development cycle. People can work on whatever they want during that period — including not working at all if they’re that burnt out — so there’s a bit of guaranteed catch up / creative time. Some of our most fun/useful features have come out of this time — like the Guiding Light or creature wands.
We also cycle some folks out to work on R&D from time to time.
That said, we still have a lot of room for improvement. We have several people on our team who are the only people who can do what they do, which unfortunately means that even when we try to stagger development, those folks can’t enjoy the benefit of longer development cycles. We’ve been trying to address that with a combo of hires and training— but even finding the time for training can feel like a luxury in a live service.
I sure hope the folks at Sunblink are enjoying their creation overall though.
hi hi hi
big fan!
i've seen a few posts in the past about cross-save, but most reference pc/console x AA. just so i know i asked, is x-save anywhere on the roadmap for steam x switch? 🤞 thanks for making a phenomenal game!!!
They generally do not answer roadmap questions here, but they have said they have no ability to support cross-platform saves or multiplayer.
ahh fair, i'd mainly seen them post about apple arcade cross-platform, so i was hoping there was a chance. thanks

I'd be interested to know if certain platforms will have priority over others. For example apple arcade recieved city town before steam obviously, but can we expect them to 'sync' up after the release? Or will apple arcade still receive new gameplay early? As a completionist I get slightly impatient to recieve new content so i'm eager to find out if we will now all get content releases at the same time
They already answered that somewhere if you scroll up. They said they have to drop content in a certain schedule for apple arcade which is why apple arcade receives content sometimes earlier but they usually also receive the content more in pieces
Yes I saw that. So maybe I should elaborate slightly. Is it possible for other platforms to be on the same schedule as apple arcade? I dont mind receiving content in 'pieces' if it means everyone has access to things at the same time.
I believe apple has to be updated first as per their contract so the rest will always be behind
I am aware.. will other platforms be updated along with Apple Arcade’s schedule? Is it possible to have PC/Switch update alongside the Apple Arcade’s very demanding schedule?
doesnt look like it else i think they would be doing that tbh
That’s why I’m asking them. To see if it’s even a possibility
I was wondering whether the devs update the wiki themselves, because sometimes I find stuff on the wiki a few days before its in the game
This might have already been answered, but I'm wondering if event balloons will continue to be added, or if we've just had a couple of one-off instances of events with balloons? I really love the event balloons, they're super cute!
this is a great question, i'd also like to know
I also like hearing about the process.
Will we ever see any more emotes added to the game? For example, there's the sleeping emote that Pompompurin and Moppu sometimes use and yet you can't get it yourself (I wish you could haha)
I am curious whether you guys are planning any contests for the future like design contests
Sorry if it already was asked and answered, but will we get more animals we can play as later ? I would love to play as a bat for example
hi devs i am curious abt flowers... how come most of them have made up names but a few dont
I want to know that too
Hi! I know this is kinda old news at this point, but I've been super curious if the Sunblink team has talked about the ongoing lawsuit with Kuromi and Studio Comet? Some characters in the past have been deemed "unusable" because they were made in collaboration with the same anime studio, so I've wondered if there's concern about how the outcome of the trial may affect the game.
As a related question, the list of "denied" characters in the past was Maimai, LittleForestFellow, Adorozatorumary, Yoshi Kitty, Gaopowerroo, Rhythm, Hanamaruobake, Bonbonribbon, Mewkledreamy, and the Kuromi 5. Has there been any additions (or subtractions? 👀) to that list that you're able to speak about?
I can't speak professionally, but the Kuromi lawsuit is only addressing Japanese moral rights, so it on paper shouldn't affect Sanrio's copyright ownership regardless of who wins,
I believe this is because Studio Comet/Television Osaka passed ownership of some characters as the show was ending or when it was first made.
Similarly to how Sanrio has ownership of the HKIA original characters Sunblink made. (According to the HKIA wiki)
why was there such a delay on releasing city town for other platforms? i thought i was going insane trying to unlock it on my switch after getting it pretty quickly on the tvOS version……
like it’s just a unity game.. i really think there shouldn’t be that many platform-specific inconsistencies considering they can compile the same content for different platforms with the click of a button.
You may want to refer to the announcement that announced the delay and discussed why it happened: #announcements message
thanks for the link. but now i also feel the need to question sunblink’s communication strategy... do you know if that message was ever officially sent to users outside of discord?
This is the only place that gets announcements like that, as this is the only official community for HKIA. Sunblink does have accounts on some social media sites that post promotional material for content that is already out or has a set release date, but, off Discord, City Town wasn't promoted as coming soon to other platforms until the most recent release date announcement.
This is just my speculation, but the devs may have not announced the delay off Discord because announcing a delay for content that people hadn't been told was coming could have caused a lot of confusion. Players who don't engage with online content for the game and haven't played the Apple Arcade version may not even have known City Town existed.
ah okok, i guess i’m kind of an edge case as i have played multiple versions but very rarely engage with any form of video game content online.
i’ve also noticed they don’t even have a channel on the switch news applet which is kind of a nonstarter for general communication but i digress …..
since you're at it, may i ask why discord is the main platform for announcements? i get a bit curious about this because other apps might reach a broader public
To do a broad answer for several of the recent questions: if it's currently something in game (emotes, avatar types, event balloons, etc) then there's a good chance that more of it will come in the future.
As a reminder, though, we don't answer roadmap questions in this channel.
Due to the review timelines on other platforms, we can't synchronize releases across all platforms for all releases. While we do try and synchronize major updates (like Wheatflour Wonderland), it's not something we could do for our usual every-six-weeks Apple updates.
Nope - the Wiki is maintained by a suite of fantastic and amazing volunteers, though we do provide access to some information early for a few editors.
Some of the flowers are very fantastical -- there's no such thing as a Blazebulb, for instance -- whereas others are an attempt to be true to life, like the Hibiscus. The name usually just reflects how fantasy-based the flower is!
We're not able to talk about / comment on anything related to this.
This is our only official community, so it gets the most information. We do post major announcements on our other socials, however.
cool! ty for the response
What would you say the most time-consuming part of development is? Is there anything players can do to volunteer to help with it?
How much of the discord messages do you guys read? i wanna say that the imagination celebration items look absolutely amazing, i didn't think i could like other items more than the sprigtime celebration ones!
Also, did you guys take inspiration from languages like japanese or hebrew to make the game's alphabet?
How far in advanced do you all plan out the storylines? As a tinfoil hat wearing wild speculator I’d love to know how heavy my tinfoil hat is. Also to the designers: wow and thank you each new drop of furniture has been better than the last 👏.
follow up flower question: why is the penstemum named like that? clearly its referencing the penstemon genus (as well as mums), penstemums look nothing like beardtongues. whats up w/ the name?
Who designed the fairy series and the blossom series? I need to tell them to their face how much I love how these came out.
they look like daisies or gerberas to me!
Or maybe mums?
i can't unsee the daisies now😭
This, I always assumed it was based on chrysanthemum
but when you look at those they don't seem very similar
That’s a different type than the one I posted though, which is also a mum
we need the exact species of each flower now, it's for a census
thats what i mean like. why is it referencin beardtongues when its a daisy...
or mum whatever
at least that one makes some sense
The first four are all combos of something they look similar to and something they don’t, IIRC
Penstemum: Penstemon + Mum
Bellbutton: Bluebelles + Bachelor’s Buttons
Dandelily: Dandelions + Tiger Lilies
Tulias: Tulips + Gardenia (or pick your -ia flower of choice!)
oh interesting!! ty for the response
I’m just curious what the avatars of Sunblink employees look like (the ones also playing the game at least), are they willing to share?
Will there be additional statements made regarding the discussion and recent development Feedback threads on the PC Hub side of the Discord before the next update?
This is mine! 💜
Thank you, such a cutie! 🤩
My current~
I tried asking around our Leads because I think this varies hugely by discipline. For instance, managing builds is a big pain for QA, and something that we've been continually trying to automate (and we actually finally managed to last week!), as is writing text cases for some of our external partners. For Design, it's a lot of manual, error-prone data entry for every new item, dye variant, visitor, etc that gets added to the game. We actually have an engineer (sometimes two) full time on what we call "Content Efficiency" which is basically finding ways to make content easier for design and art to add to the game. For Art, creating things like icons of all of the items or the different promotional assets across all storefronts is one of the more time-consuming elements, as well as translating clothing items from our basic body types to the other two avatar types.
It's not really any one thing, and we're constantly working on improving the processes! Contributing feedback and bug reports here is probably the best thing folks can do to help us out
Thank you thank you! I'll pass this along~~ I know a few of us try to keep tabs on sentiment and feedback when new events and versions release, but it's always awesome to hear when things resonate. We're so glad you liked it!
The original glyphs for the language were done by one of our artists, and I'm not sure what their influences were.
The major beats of the storyline have existed from before launch! There are always little tweaks and adjustments and fleshing out that happens as we develop and go along, and a few larger shifts have happened from the original vision, but those core tenets of what the overall story is have been pretty consistent from the game's inception.
this is me 😄 gotta match my wizard aesthetic
Oh my gosh 🥰🫶
You guys have so many great avatars, I saw Swampy’s earlier today which made me curious 🤩
OK, I got a way cooler answer from her: she referenced amoebas! She was specifically trying to avoid a direct association with existing alphabets and so looked at amoeba shapes.
I have a weird question: so cogimyon has multiple levels of her magical girl form while everyone else has only one level. This reminded me of sailor moon as Usagi also has multiple levels of her transformation and the other sailor scouts have only one. I was wondering if this was the reasoning behind that or if its just a coincidence.
Having multiple stages of magic/transformation was something we saw consistently in the Magical Girl genre, so we wanted to have it represented with Cogimyun as well!
I'm curious how you came up with the bell garden puzzles! Finding the hidden ones was fun, even if one of them you had to guess (I guessed it without looking it up!)
@slate island Here is some behind the scene look Chelsea shared before about bell garden
I (and a lot of the design team) play a lot of open world games, and when planning WW we wanted to lean hard into the adventure aspect and have a really rich set of puzzles for people to discover. I always appreciate more subtle puzzles in open worlds, so we went through a few iteration of how gemstones could tie into puzzles and came up with the kind of 'code' of music notes. I can't for the life of me find that tiny notebook right now where I first sketched them out, but they then went through the usual rounds of iteration with the design, art, and eng teams.
That's so awesome! I love those kinds of subtle puzzles, too! They were really, really clever and I appreciated them. I'm playing Blue Prince as well, so it's been a nice change of pace to the puzzles in that game. Thanks for answering!
Lilac :)
Waa so adorable 🥰😭
it's just so pretty, everything fairy related is always nice!
🤣 i see the vision, i asked because there's one that reminds me of this japanese letter う upside down
and E is kinda like this one い
I'm in love with autumn palettes
Such a cute lil mushroom 🥰🫶
i’m not sure if this is something i ask in here, or if it’s been answered. are there any future plans of making more avatar animals? i’d love to see more!
Hi! This was said previously 🫶
thank you

This is incredibly cool to see: How many of the team play consistently even though you may know what is coming? Does it ruin it for you? I say this in the best way possible: I feel bad that you guys can’t experience the game the way we do because it’s in fact that good 😭
I think this is singlehandedly the BEST avatar i have seen!
Hi @graceful salmon -- so sorry for the delayed response!
In answer to your question, the vast majority of our sound effects are indeed built using content from sound libraries. Our partners at Injected Senses have an extensive inventory of libraries and can craft just about anything we need from there. Usually, a single in-game sound effect is composed from a number of sources from libraries, much like ingredients in a tasty recipe. However, there are some areas where Foley is used, such as:
- Ambient weather audio: sometimes recorded by just going outside or sticking a mic out the window. Includes wind, water (streams, rain, etc.), and thunder.
- Certain musical instrument SFX: especially anything guitar-related
- Misc. things: object impacts, paper rustling, that sort of stuff
Also, rest assured that no records were harmed in the making of our game. 😅 Although our main record-scratch sound effect is indeed pretty epic!
Thanks for your interest!
Sorry if this isnt allowed, but i have seen an increasing amount of concern regarding the mini DLC announcement. Can we expect some elaboration on this specifically? Theres been alot of debating (myself included) and i think some clarity would be really helpful to reduce speculation if possible 🩷

Hey I’m sorry if I can’t ask this question but I’m just concerned about the AI for translating? What does this mean and what exactly was used to translate the game? 😞
I have a question about TOPHAT. We know that Sanrio has to approve of characters before they’re added to the game. Does this mean that TOPHAT is now considered a Sanrio character?
he is! Chelsea mentioned this while answering a question about character design before
yesssssss
Thank you!
did u guys know narlugas were actually real (rare, but still!) when u made the glimmerling narluga???
omg vote nuls for sanrio character ranking!!
is there a biology nerd in the team???
there r definitely a ton of nerds in general given the sheer amount of references, n i wouldnt b surprised if at least one of them happened to b a bio nerd too...
I always thought it was a cross between a narwhal and a beluga!
So now the question is: where’s the TOPHAT and Nul and IS merch 👀
y. yes. that’s what a narluga is. Huh
I just didn’t think those two animals were capable of creating a unique animal irl 🤣
that was why i was askin abt it… hence the (rare but still) part
u can just look up narluga if u want
on da net
Yeah I had no idea that belugas and narwhals could mate irl so I thought it was a made-up concept, so this is definitely a new thing I learned today!
I thought it was something like the jackalope 🤣
Yes! It is in the game because I, like Lesley, assumed they were genetically incompatible, and they are both fantastic weird creatures. So when I discovered that there was proof of their hybridization , I got extremely excited and wanted to immortalize it in the game somehow.
thats awesome!! im so glad it made it in-- would u b able to talk abt the design process re:sanrio? were they onboard right away? how did u guys get the current design (i love the colors btw)?
For smaller things like critters, Sanrio really just does a lightweight visual approval in real time. We have a weekly meeting with them every Wednesday where we run them through all of the new art that's come in in a very informal way, and then they flag anything that might need to be submitted for formal review. Anything related to the characters themselves goes through formal review regardless, but for Narluga we showed them, got a lot of Awwws, and we were good to go!
Do the devs celebrate milestones with office parties? Like releasing a dlc
We're about 50/50 local to Boulder vs remote. We did a big in person party for the game's launch, but subsequent celebrations have been predominantly digital. We did an interesting/silly/fun online escape room around when we launched on console. I think our favorite company team event is probably our white elephant gift exchange at the end of every year. There's always a mix of interesting new tabletop/board games, practical outdoor gear, really weird random stuff, and the strangest Hello Kitty & Friends merch we can find.
cool!! this is makin me want to get into game dev lol 😭 i cant im gettin a degree in a whole other field…
tysm for answering all my silly questions as usual!
me too! i thought it was the same naming logic as dandelilies (dandelion+lily)!
Same!!
I need to know what the devs thought by just adding this building and not doing anything with it in several years XD did you guys had plans for this building and threw them away? I need to know
Thanks somehow I can‘t access the full post when I click on it though
It's the spoiler channel from Apple Arcade
Ahh that makes sense since I am a steam player
Now that the DLC release is in the final countdown, I was wondering what is the favourite part in City Town of Sunblink team?

I think for a lot of us, no one's gotten to our favorite part yet :X but I'm asking folks regardless!
Earlier today, we were discussing the (fake) similarities between Tomodachi Life and Animal Crossing. Well, here’s a worthy successor to the latter. Originally released as an Apple Arcade exclusive, this life sim populated by Sanrio characters is now available on almost every platform. Today, it’s getting a major
yeah yeah yeah!!!
I listen to these soundtracks while I work to help me focus hahahaha thank you!!!
My favorite part is ||the Arcade!!! I love all the arcade games they are so fun||
I second this! It was one of my favorite || interior spaces to create as I love arcades! And the mini-games are super fun|| like Meg said!
Dunno if this has been asked before but I always thought it was curious how TOPHAT looks different in the memories (he looks more "solid" and also has feet) vs. his actual in-game look ("glitchy"/translucent body, has hands but no feet).
I guess I'm just curious if it's intentional for lore reasons or if the design in the memories is some sort of beta design that was left in the final game?
Wow, weird, never noticed 👀 Huh.
i recently bought the wheatflour wonderland DLC and noticed that Cogiymun sometime appends the phrase "myun" to her sentences sometimes. this wouldn't be notable on its own, but i wanted to ask why Baku doesn't append "zona" to his sentences? he usually says "zona" or "ゾナ" according to a friend of mine who likes researching 2000's sanrio media, and i recognise that it's generally been a trend with Baku's character not to translate the "zona" catchphrase into English like in his Netflix cameo, but as far as i can tell he doesn't even use it when the game's language is set to Japanese, which he usually does in his Japanese appearances (his debut, kuromi's pretty journey, the netflix show).
was this an intentional choice to remove "zona" from baku's dialogue? have i missed an example of him doing it? is this some kind of accidental oversight? it's a weirdly big part of his character to me, and i'd be really sad if it wasn't present at all in the game, even if i don't use the language he says it in.
Will the content pack(mini dlc) thats coming in summer be a permanent thing we can buy at anytime or will have a certain number of days we can buy it before it becomes unavailable to buy
Permanent!
I'm so excited for it then
My understanding is that Sanrio character representation frequently changes over time, and is just now starting to get more globally standardized. We were basically told to ignore anything besides the official materials that Sanrio gave us (and continues to give us any time we do a new character!).
he has one line where he says "zona". it's only during the spooky celebration
really? in which language? and do u have a clip or screenshot of it?
japanese!
omg ty!
A message to the game/level designer who decided that Wish Me Mell's leveling process was going to be this painfully excruciatingly slow: are you okay? Who hurt you ? I'm training to become a psychiatrist, this is a safe place, you can talk to me, we can work it out together 🫶🏻
✨
Question for the devs: what language do you guys code in?
ooh secondin this one bc ive just started to learn
also question in regards to [CITY DLC SPOILERS] ||i've noticed that kirimi-chan is only ever referred to by name, and never w/ any pronouns -- was this just a stylistic choice or is kirimi-chan gender/pronouns ambiguous? lookin on the hk wiki im seein comments abt kirimi-chan bein "neither a boy nor a girl" but it looks like the original video is long gone||
no wrong answer obviously! just curious
DLC spoiler: || is there a reason why the swamp nulls are green and the city nulls are purple? I need to know the science behind it ||
That's a pretty major spoiler right now, so I'm going to delete it. You can hide spoilers||like this|| ||like this||
I might be wrong but afaik ||unlike other Sanrios Kirimi-chan isn't actually meant to be a single character but multiple, like a group of sliced salmon that yearn to be eaten. So while we see only one, technically there is as many Kirimi-chan as there is sliced fishes! So they're usually referred to with name or they/them||
I was wondering, would you be willing to make beta/early access release of updates in all languages so a group of users could double check the translation ?
The more I play the more I notice wonky or just..bad french translation (DLC and main game) and I been wondering if it was due to the translation being made with AI (as mentionned on Steam) and not double checked.
We've done a few one-off things like this with various folk s-- I'd recommend making a feedback thread with ideas / proposals about what you'd want that pipeline to look like (we do have folks reviewing, but it's clearly not at the level we want it yet). You can tag me and I'll link it to the folks doing translation work.
It's not really a question about dev but I want to ask what would Magical, Frosty and Rainbow flavors taste like in your opinion? In my imagination, Magical would taste like grape soda sparkles, Frosty like menthol and Rainbow like bubble gum cotton candy. I hope, there is no spoilers here ><
Congratulations on the Webby!
I was wondering if it‘s easier for you guys to get a „go“ for own characters such as the nulls or tophats since there are less licensing issues or if it‘s just as difficult because sanrio still has to approve
Here is some information about the nuls and TOPHAT that might answer some of your questions: #hkia-dev-and-design message
Hi!! I've been wondering if there are any plans for a tool for us to migrate our saves somehow? 🥺 ideally cross-platform, but, if not, at least within the same platform so we can back it up? Since the game requires us to play daily, with no time travel, when something happens to our console or we want to update to a new platform, it's really painful 🥺 I would like to upgrade from Switch 1 to Switch 2 in the future and this has me worried. I've also seen cases of people who have had their Nintendo Switch stolen or malfunction and have lost their save which made me so sad for them!! 🥺🥹 I really hope there's some sort of fix in mind for this ❤️ I would be so sad if I lost my save!
The developers have said they can't add cross-platform save transfers.
On your own platform, save backups depend on the platform's cloud save services, like iCloud for Apple Arcade or Nintendo Switch Online for Switch. (If I remember correctly, Nintendo has its own transfer system for Switch 1 to Switch 2 but can also use cloud saves for that.)
Always-online servers for games are a significant cost. It's part of the reason HKIA doesn’t have asynchronous multiplayer features (like being able to mail friends items).
The Nintendo Switch has a transfer feature built into it for a complete system transfer, correct. Save files are moved from one to the other. If you have Nintendo Switch Online, MOST software is backed up in the cloud and can be downloaded onto any system on demand (you need to be logged into your Nintendo Account on the other system). Hello Kitty is one of those. So as long as you don't overwrite your cloud save, it's always available to retrieve from the Cloud.
Cloud saves are updated every time you turn the software off and are connected to the internet (unless you have modified the settings).
For real? Works for this game too? 🥹 I wonder if it would work for the transfer between switch 1 and 2
You shouldn't have any issues with a system transfer to Switch 2!
Omg yay this is such good news!! Thanks for the info!!
can confirm, I moved my save switch one to switch 2 no problem. I think cloud save for the switch requires NSO though so keep that in mind
Awesome!! Thanks!!
Thanks so much Fred, and everyone who has congradulated us! 🎉 We appreciate you all so much, celebrating this win with all of you
was imagination island at least somewhat inspired by kirby? because it feels like a robobot and Forgotten land in one flask at parts. and one of critters colored almost exactly as one of forgotten lands' characters (and boss).
On same note - Tophat himself looked like Kirby character and i couldn't shake expectations that he will do a Magolor on us at least in small capacity.
(and I do like that)
For the hide and seek minigame on WW, were you guys inspired by Prop Hunt? Esp the one streamer who goes "one right here" when playing?
Might have posted this in the wrong channel before. Is there any plan to make playing together on switch 1 and switch 2 possible again?
I want to upgrade to a switch 2 but won't be able to play with my kids anymore if I do. If I use a switch 1 game card in the switch 2, could this still play with other switch 1 players?
It's my birthday
Happy birthday!

I have a fun one-- What's the different devs' perfect dango combination?
Every time Keroppi asks me to give him my favorite, I go for the creamy coffee chocolate dango.
I was wondering will there be a Hello Kitty Island Adventure cookbook in the near future?
What's each dev's favorite Easter egg 👀 loved the monty python + the holy grail ref lol and noticed one line that sounded like a Heroes ref
Mine is creamy chocolate magical! ✨ love the colors and it sounds delicious
I'm as basic as it comes with a Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate combo! Because there is no such thing as enough chocolate lol.
🧑🍳 Thank you for your interest in a cookbook! Though we currently don't have one planned, Hello Kitty and Friends Official Youtube recently put out a City Town Sando recipe 🥪🍓 Check it out here!
Hello friends! Today, we're making a colorful and delicious Fruit Sando inspired by the brand new City Town update in Hello Kitty Island Adventure! Beyond exploring City Town and running your own cafe, you can also help your friends open new shops, solve puzzles and challenges, and customize your space and your character with new outfits and dec...
Magical Creamy Chocolate? 👀 I imagine it like milk chocolate + pop rocks
My question is for composer Phil!
Hi! Thanks for your amazing tracks. They take me back to my childhood, playing 3D platformers like Spyro. Some of the tracks really fit the vibe. I don't know if that's a coincidence.
My question is kind of silly – you're listed in the credits as one of the vocalists on the tracks. Which track can I hear you on?
P.S. My favorite track in the game is now the one from the sewers. I sometimes leave the game running there for an hour or more and just listen to it while I'm busy with other things.
From Phill: Thanks so much for your question! I'm singing as part of the group in some of the Seaside Resort tracks, as well as the main theme variation for the Sunshine Celebration.
I might say the 50th Anniversary dango, it just looks so pretty.... but I wonder what flavor it has? It's made with Bubbles. Does it taste like soap? 🤔
Mint!
A throwback, but, my fave still has to be "Cakes on a Plane" -- specifically because when I first read the early script, I wanted to cut that bit. I thought "it's too old, no one will think it's funny" -- but then the team rallied behind it, and did the whole strawberry shortcake bit, and people get really delighted when they see it for the first time 😆 So it's one of my favorites now
I want to make a request.
Could I, like, have a google sheet with the game's script in german, so that I can effectively highlight grammatical errors and inaccuracies, with fixes and explanations?
Right now, new dialogue is so broken I'd need to make a report for every single conversation, which does not make for a useful report.
This is actually an amazing idea!
As a german I can say thats a really german request from you. I hope they give you the sheets in the DinA format
are you guys considering contracting a different translation company soon
The amount of players who would do it for free lol
it’s geniunely just this bad i’d also do it for free because currently its near unplayable 😭
but it shouldn’t have gotten to this point in the first place
if the translation company they hired was worth their money, it would be a lot better
right now it highkey feels like sunblink is getting scammed and it worries me
Could be, I mean they don‘t have people to double check
Probably alot of these translation companies use AI @quiet prairie
many many many mistakes that professionals just wouldnt do
Please remember to keep it kind even when offering critiques and feedback
i do not think i have to cater to the feelings of a company that is scamming sunblink
they have 1 job, translation, and they’re not doing it
i think both we as players and sunblink as a contractor both deserve better
Please move this discussion to your platform’s feedback channel, as that is a more appropriate place to share your thoughts on this issue
i understand you don’t want commentary here so i’ll stop
however i still wish for an answer wether or not you’re searching replacement
I'd also like to know just a crumb of what's going on with Sunblink and the translation company they're using. Are you guys locked into a contract with them, did Sanrio say "you HAVE to use this company for localizations," given the amount of feedback, would they be open to unpaid volunteers proofing their work instead of leaving it to a single person who brings it up in Discord?
What is the process like for coming up with a yearly theme for each event? Like the imagination celebration was more general fairy tale last year and this year it's kind of an iridescent fairy theme. Or the new month of meh outfits vs the old ones, is it ever a case of something not making it in the first year but then the next year it does?
This question is amazing and one I wouldn’t have thought of but also am wondering now.
@brazen path @quiet prairie @inland fern To answer/update on the translations:
-
We're definitely aware that the translations need a lot of work, and we've been doing several things to try and improve them on our end. Let us know if you noticed anything different in 2.16 / or CU7 when it comes out.
-
We've been doing a test-run of more volunteer-collaboration. It's legally very tricky given we need to somewhat familiarize ourselves with the laws in all of the respective countries folks want to volunteer from -- Volunteer translation requires signing our NDA and another contract on top of that. We've also realized that the best option, were we to roll this out more broadly, is probably a group of volunteers per language, which adds to the complexity.
-
We're still open to ideas (and continuing to brainstorm on it ourselves), but we should take followup discussion to a feedback channel!
Thank you for your reply, this is very promising at least.
It's a mix of folks from art and design getting into a room and being like "OK cool, what could we do for X event?" -- usually we do a content update's worth of events at a time, so we'd be looking at Interlude of Dreams, Spooky Celebration, Give & Gather, Lighttime Jubilee, and Luck & Lantern all at once, for instance. We usually have to design events about 6-9 months ahead of time.
Swampy and I also try to keep tabs on what people have been requesting, and we've even done some explicit requests to the community before (We did a Fall Fashion Frenzy request awhile ago which wound up deciding the clothing for the next year). We also try and broaden the folks we're representing in the game, so sometimes it's a matter of "Could we have something that resonates with holiday X for event Y". And then other times, like for Interlude of Dreams, it could be something like "What sets don't we have yet?" since Interlude of Dreams is so open-ended.
Suffice it to say, if folks DO have ideas for events that they want to see, always make a feedback about it! We read almost everything ❤️
Thank you!
This is very nice to hear even if it’s not decided on yet, because it’s telling us you guys are trying!
Very hopeful for what’s to follow!
Why am I crying in the club rn? I had just about come to terms with the idea that nothing was being shared because the standard that had been put out was deemed 'good enough' and that was the end of it. Thank you for answering.
I was starting to get under the same impression! So glad to see it’s not the case.
Yippie!
Does Island Spirit have a birthday? If not... 🥺 ❓
lol (as in so funny i have no other response because wdym almost EVERY sentence)
Conversation, not sentence, and I mean it as I said it.
sometimes it is that bad
in french, yeah…
Truly a sensitive topic for me, I need everyone to have visitors & birthdays for my wellbeing 💜
It'd be cute if their birthday was on the day HKIA first released 🥹
Hello! A friend of mine was super excited to get into this game after I showed her that Baku was in the game! This happened while I was gushing about the Under the Sea Celebration, and she asked me if the Visitors will also get to be mermaids in the future? I’m actually not sure, they don’t get a ton of outfits, so I’m curious what the verdict is on that? Is this something that the devs plan to give to visitors after the main friends?
I’m also curious what leads the devs to do things for them (ie: quests, outfits, etc.). I love seeing them in the game and appreciate the efforts made to keep as lively as the rest of the cast.
When can we expect Monkichi to appear in the game?
I feel like the little ook ook is underappreciated 🙁
Please use #1431330625503363316 for character suggestions.
This channel is for questions about HKIA’s design and development but not content plans/roadmap questions.
Hey! Could you let Phil know that "Anxiety Attack" is the best song in the game? Love it!
Also, I'd like to shake the hand of whoever came up with ||the final boss battle in City Town||. Sounds like you need to make an RPG next. 😆
Content designer for software here (albeit not in the games industry), and I have a similar bit of feedback. There are many places, even in the original English, where there are errors. The most common type of error I've found involve punctuation -- things like commas being omitted when they should be present or question marks being used in incorrect places.
I'm not sure who edits the dialogue, but I feel it needs more sets of eyes on it to check for correct punctuation there.
Please use #1402379905613959309 for reporting any dialogue errors and your platform's feedback channel for any general feedback. This channel is meant for asking the developers questions about the design/development process.
Also, please keep in mind that all posts must be entirely in English, except from in-game screenshots or if explaining a translation error — the paragraph at the bottom breaks server rules.
No worries! I'll delete that part, but it said "Unfortunately, my German knowledge is conversational at best, so I can't say anything about that"
i want to second this! i play in english but im bilingual (ja/en) and would love to help out in translation! ive done volunteer translation before, so its not my first time and im native in both
Genuine question. Did you guys use a random generator for the Hungry Figments, or did you sit there and go "what's the worst combo we can get the players to make that people will think about forever? ah yes, double hard boiled eggs and chocolate sandos, perfect"
Did you see what the requirements were when the Figments were first released on AA? They used to be soooo much hungrier.
Were they hungrier for weirder combinations too 😭 If someone on that team said "I could go for sweets that taste like vegetables and coffee at the same time", I need them to be studied /lh /j
I wanted to know when the deadline for the character cabin contest is
5 days ago they said a month, so about 25 days left.
Thanks
Yesterday my fiancé heard me decorating a cabin using Anxiety Attack in the music disc player, and they eventually had to ask “what in the Final Fantasy are you doing” 🤣 I found the ||final battle|| on the video streaming site so I could show them how it all went down, and they loved it 🤌🏻
