Basically. No pet battling and limited access to other collections, can't level past 20, there's a cap on how much gold you can have, can't join guilds or use anything aside from basic social features, etc
It basically gives you just enough to try out the game. You can still do quite a bit up to and with a level 20 character as far as exploring and interacting with lower level content, but it's still basically just a starter version

Remi, regarding laptop noises, that will depend most on the specs of your laptop but it doesn't sound too concerning. WoW naturally pushes the CPU, Video card, and Hard drive. So, if it's "fan" noises you're probably fine.

i guess you get the "real" levelling experience. I like slower leveling (feels more rewarding) and preferthe starting area. In exile's reach you get everything spoon fed to you
but it's a faster start if you're going to speed level

A wow sub includes access to wow retail and wow Classic (classic era and burning crusade classic).
It also always includes all expansions except for the most recent one which has to be bought seperately.
Free Trial is up to lv. 20
Sub is up to lv. 50 and includes all content except for shadowlands
Shadowlands is til 60 with all content included.
If you are new your path is through exiles reach (starter island) -> bfa content on zandalar/kul tiras (til lv. 48-50) -> Shadowlands.
You can get gametime in form of single purchases/gametime cards and subscriptions (which can be canceled anytime).
When you dont have any gametime your account get treated like a starter edition account again until you add some which means you can only use up to lv. 20 characters.
...and i think thats it 
if you add gametime/sub it can take up to 24 hours to lift all restrictions and you're good to go.

tbc pros: rewarding leveling, food has a use, combat requires a bit of timing with the weapon swings, progression is tough but earned. tbc cons: levelling can be a bit too slow sometimes, no mount until level 30? 40? not so much content or QoL.
I wish there was a middle ground
also retail con: no people anywhere but in the big cities, and the auction house is a mess. this is the opposite of TBC where you can run into people anywhere and the auction house works well
after playing for about a month I can see why they decided to release Classic and TBC, the retail version has become a bit thinned out and streamlined/mainstream (instant gratification)

and thats fine and all but thats confusing for newer players. i would say get to lv. 10, get into the capital city and start bfa content, get to lv. 48-50 then into shadowlands. thats how it goes currently

Exiles Reach (or get lv. 10 however you want) -> Get BFA Intro Quest in Capital City (Stormwind or Orgrimmar) -> Get into and finish BFA Content (Thats the shit on Zandalar/Kul'Tiras) -> Reach lv. 48 -> Back to Capital to get the Intro Quest for Shadowlands
