Season of Discovery was an experimental version of classic World of Warcraft where they took a bunch of features from wrath of the Lich King and injected it into classic. A lot of people called it Wrath lite or mini wrath. It was really good in the first and second phase because people were capped to a level and it stopped the 20-year neck beard from reaching escape velocity. But of course it soon became a toxic cesspool of black market gold RMT GDKP and the 20-year neck beard that lie cheats and steals to win the best loot.

Classic era are the servers that dropped in 2019 I think. Anniversary is classic recycled that released in October of 2024. The truth is I'm not playing right now. I'd stay away from anniversary servers because they're deeply corrupt NightSlayer PVP server is the most dirty World of Warcraft server I have ever played in do not go to night slayer PVP server in anniversary It's a black market economy that the company protects. I would say if you want to have fun you should play hardcore mode but I really haven't played recently since they screwed the pooch on season of Discovery and let anniversary quickly devolve into a cesspool of corruption.

I tried a paladin (level 5), and it was borning as heck.
I tried a mage (level 17), and I keep dying a lot. It is pretty fun, but I am struggling to kill mobs without dying every... 5 minutes. (Maybe I am in the wrong area?)

I am wondering what a good class is that has survivability, and can stand on its own mostly / is new user friendly.

I’m very late to answer, but in classic almost everything is just pretty tough until you get more tools at higher level

Paladin dps is mostly auto attacks though so not surprised if you find it boring

Mage actually is good at surviving, but you need to be fighting mobs on the move (especially if frost mage). Keep up the ice shield (and eventually barrier)

But many combos are possible.
But I think a semi healer-dps (like any healer class) and a semi dps-tank (like warrior or paladin (shaman can be cool too but need bigger heal) can be really cool.

But you can try to do full tank with full dps. But tank can have an hard time to have the monster on him (except your dps is chill and wait)

It's cool with vanilla game like classic era, or anniversary, is that you can mix-up specialisation when you level up.

Just now Tom Ellis has posted that they have decided maladath is a dead server forced us onto NA Ping and will soon disband the server opening transfers to Nightslayer and Dreamscythe Megaservers that nobody asked for nor wanted.

They are testing the OCE playerbase to see if they can do this with no pushback at all I strongly encourage everyone to comment on that twitter post and also go to the following wow forum post and voice your opinion about such a disgusting and unprofessional change.

Make sure they know that you will unsub and refund if this goes ahead as well and this essentially means the end for oceanic servers in the future if we allow this to happen.

I think it stays in affect for ghost wolf, but I actually dint remember if it works for mounts in classic. I never played a shaman in vanilla and can't remember if water walking stayed in affect when it was cast on me by one when I'm mounted. Then again I'm half asleep

It's extremely unlikely, because, back then, class quests existed, and there'd only be one Shaman race, and one paladin race on each faction, (Tauren and Dwarf) And they aren't going to make a whole new series of quests for the sake of two races. ^_^

We’ve had over a decade of experience on these classes now, and without the threat of further expansions and content drops (once all Classic content has been released), there’s time and space to try various group compositions. We know the potential of different class specialisations that we may not have dared to try back then.

I for one am going to go druid, despite knowing that only one spec was deemed viable in Vanilla for end game. 😃

really the raid just has to get the boss from 100-0, and if you can do that in 30 minutes or 25 minutes (almost a 20% increase in effectiveness), it doesn't matter. the boss is still dead

but people that are claiming there was only 1 spec out of 3 that were viable do have some points. for example druid T2 and T3 set bonuses focused on healing

and the counterpoint to THAT is...well the set bonuses weren't necessarily useful even if they were intended for your spec. druid T3 had a 4pc bonus that reduced the mana costs of your healing spells by 3%. nice to have but maybe not going to make or break the raid

really it comes down to it being difficult to make one tier set that could augment the strengths of three different specs (very different in the case of our hybrids)

so i think most times people back in '04 decided whatever spec was supported by the gear was going to be the spec that was played

it's a bit deeper than gear tbh. Some specs were monumentally flawed. Since it was going to be a while out from having anything resembling cohesive gameplay, that leaves raw character power.

You were a holy priest in dungeons and raids and shadow in PVP. Disc was broken at the time. It had a talent to increase wand damage.

idk i played disc, so maybe i have a bias. but you weren't locked into spending every talent in a single tree. the wand talent was on the first tier so you could dip in to take that very easily when leveling

and it was awesome to level with lol

yeah, but the better setups always had you doing a 51 in one tree. I started as a warlock, moved to priest and hunter. Survival's tree was just a disaster waiting to happen. There was an entire month blizzard slowly redid all the trees 2 classes at a time.
