Hello! I'm not sure if this has been asked anywhere, but does WoW Head offer an API to be able to pull/search for items for Discord bot purposes? I am writing a bot for my upcoming classic guild and would be quite interested in writing a command to embed item information/tooltip and figured WoW Head probably had the most comprehensive DB

@coarse blade We do not offer an API for this purpose. We have to be careful with how much information can be pulled from the site and displayed in other locations. We rely on users to actually visit our site in order to continue to exist, so bots like you're describing would be counterintuitive. If you could create a bot that displays only tooltips, utilizing our existing tooltip functionality https://www.wowhead.com/tooltips that links back to our site that would be acceptable but I'm not sure that's possible to do or not but that would be as far as we'd be willing to go in that direction.

Question: Why is it that some quest chains display the next/previous quest in sequence, allowing one to easily follow along on wowhead as they progress through a chain, but others do not? Is it just a matter of getting the information inputted, or is there some other guiding/limiting factor?

So, the Tortollans were born."

I think the article is missing a very fun and noteworthy thing, the difference between tortollans in Hearthstone and tortollans in WoW ! Besides the name, and a part of their appearance (humanoid turtles), the two are practically nothing alike :

Hearthstone tortollans are dimwitted, tribal humanoids ("fish as a weapon? they aren't very clever!" - Jerry Mascho, Senior Concept Artist) who seem to worship the Ancient called Tortolla. They are obsessed with food, they steal eggs, etc. They're basically the turtle version of Virmen, or rather, kobold.

WoW tortollans are wealthy, intelligent and wise. They are adventurers, they are artifact-collectors, and storytellers. Their "currency" is literally scrolls, tales, and rare artifacts. They are also much bigger than their Hearthstone counterparts, in Hs they are small humanoids comparable to kobolds, in WoW they are the size of pandaren, and some even bigger.
- This one is more of a correction, about the sentence :
"Nobody less than Brann Bronzebeard himself speculates that the turtle tribe descends from an ancient tortollan, known as “a reptilian warrior with a shell reminiscent of a turtle’s”, who fought in the War of the Ancients."
This line is erroneous, as it was never stated anywhere ! It seems that someone got confused and took 2 separate sentences/sources and mashed them together, unintentionally producing a factual statement that isn't one. In fact I know which sources these are :
a) The WotA books from 2004/2005 mentioned many demigods, among which "a reptilian warrior with a shell reminiscent of a turtle's"
b) Brann speculated (in the Magazine from 2011) the existence on the existence of several Ancients and their creation of descendant races, such as gorlocs possibly descending from a supposed frog Ancient, gnolls possibly descending from a supposed hyena Ancient, and so on. But he didn't speculate on tortollans, since they didn't exist yet back then.
And finally, the reptilian warrior in a) was never said to be "an ancient tortollan" either.
So practically nothing that sentence says is correct. But I get the idea ! And it should probably be reworded to something along the lines of : "Given the existence of animal species descending from Wild Gods, such as quilboar descending from Agamaggan, one theory is that tortollans could have originated from a turtle Wild God". To our knowledge so far, it could be Tortolla, who's confirmed to be a Wild God, or it could be Torga, who's a loa and most loa are Wild Gods (though not all loa are Wild Gods).
- Oh and I also couldn't find a source for this sentence, or rather the first part :
As stated per law, every emperor of the oldest troll tribe needs a guiding hand in the form of the Zanchuli Council.It could probably be reworded into something like "The Zanchuli Council advises the King (or Queen) of Zandalar and ensures his every command is executed upon" so it's a bit less speculatory.

- One general thing about "appearance and culture" in Hearthstone: You will never be able to tell the full story of every card. The viewer's interpretation is key.
What certainly differentiates HS tortollans from WoW tortollans is simple cultural evolution. I would never draw the line between Un'Goro's tortollans and kobolds, let alone virmen! As stated by Professor Doyle, they may appear as "primitive crater-dwellers", but his adventures show that Umbra in particular seems to be incredibly wise and especially connected to nature as a whole. All that applies to many WoW tortollans as well. They may be more advanced in a cultural way, but I'd still say that they appear to be the exact same race at its core.
Are HS tortollans wealthy? I don't know, because the story won't tell us. You have your interpretation, I have mine. Cultural advance doesn't equal less intellect, let alone wisdom or wealth. A fish as a weapon won't change that, especially if it's depicted in conceptual art. For example, take a look at Stonehill Defender's weaponry!
Are HS tortollans smaller compared to WoW tortollans? No clue either. The only thing I can say though is that they don't appear to be very small, looking at the art where other creatures can be seen for comparison. Spikeridged Steed for example shows that there not that much smaller compared to a huge stegodon, so there's that. The cartoony look on most artwork certainly adds to the general idea of them being cute little turtles, but I'd say there's no difference between HS and WoW tortollans in that regard. Again, almost pure speculation. 😃
- So what my statement says is that Brann Bronzebeard speculates that tortollans might be descended from that "reptilian warrior". I always try to read up on lore that I don't know enough about, and that bit seems to be written down in the 2011 WoW magazine. I would say that this piece of literature may have survived in about three to four households max, so I took the wiki entry by its word, and that is where I need to get picky:
Looking at the format, the bullet point
- "The tortollan might be descended from the Ancient that was described as "a reptilian warrior with a shell reminiscent of a turtle's""

If anything is wrong with this statement then it’s the fact that this was not a quote by Brann, although I cannot confirm or deny that this quote is used in regards to Brann’s anthropology in the ‘11 magazine. Can you? :)
I can definitely see your point though, but if something needs change then it’s the wowpedia article about the Ancient Guardians, because it heavily implies that Brann said that quote about reptile warriors.
In my research I interpreted that this quote was from the magazine that contains a bit about Brann’s anthropology work.
- I remember a quest saying that there HAS to be a Zanchuli Council, so I concluded that “by law” would make sense here. I will try and look up that particular quest text. I would assume that such a thing is decided by law in such a hierarchic and caste-centric culture like the Zandalari, would you not? No speculation, just conclusion based on common sense.

Actually this wasn't my interpretation, but official wording from Blizzard ! In Hearthstone (before BFA), the Hearthstone team specifically described the tortollans as "primitive" "crater-dwellers" and "not very smart" and other similar adjectives. This is also very visible in their art, where they are basically small sentient beings eating food and stealing eggs and stuff. They are still sentient though, and would technically count as "intelligent beings", but this is still in huge contrast to World of Warcraft, where the tortollans are the total opposite, they are a wise, scholarly race, that likes to collect scrolls and tales and values knowledge above all. That's a difference (which I went into more detail above) which I thought could be interesting to note in the article, the tortollans from Hearthstone and the tortollans from WoW are factually not the same. (Whether that's due to living in different places or whatever, is up to interpretation however).

Yeah so that's what we suspected at Wowpedia, we knew that's where Wowhead's confusion probably came from. If you look at the sentence on Wowpedia, it's under a "Speculation" section. Everything that is under the Speculation section is speculation, made by editors, they have nothing official, and you'll notice that they don't have a source. As I said, the sentence

We don't have any values inserted into the presets so when you try to save one it's complaining since there are no weights. You can make custom ones but iirc we stopped trying to make preset weights awhile ago, too difficult to keep up with.
We'll have to see if we plan to remove this or update/fix it or not.

Heya, slightly confused here and was wondering if I could get a hand:
I'm trying to determine the drop rate for the Reins of the Astral Cloud Serpent. Looking at the entry for it (https://www.wowhead.com/item=87777/reins-of-the-astral-cloud-serpent), it's showing as contained within 4 different caches, one with a 4% drop, another with a 3% drop and the final two with 0.8% - are these different difficulties, and if so which one's which?

It looks like the best drop rates are 25-Man with 4% Heroic and 3% Normal due to the increased amount of loot dropped in 25 man in general. If you click on each box and see what loot is in each and/or comments, should give you a decent idea.

The data sample is very low and the drop rates are so low too - thus the calculation is obviously a bit off as it only counts those that have the wowhead reporter installed.

If you do, try disabling all of them and try again, see if that helps. If that doesn't work, check any internet security programs you're running, see if any of them are monitoring your web traffic and potentially blocking third party connections (when you use our tools we connect you to Battle.net within the tool, and it could be blocking that connection).

Hmm, all I can think to suggest is that you clear your browser's cookies/cache and see what happens from there.
Especially if you're having login issues, that's notoriously an indicator of a stale session cookie lingering around. Not sure why that would impact the content displayed but let's try that out at least.

The article about the water walking equipment is missing info, if the slot is shared across all mounts on an account, shared across all mounts on a char, unique for each mount but shared for the account or unique for each mount on every char.

I happened upon it while looking into something mentioned in the #retail-wow channel for someone. When I click the links to the battlegrounds that do not have a level range listed, I do get a result, it's just mostly blank/limited data. Is that the expected outcome?

Once you are able to click somewhere without that happening, click Feedback in the upper right corner and select Advertising issue as the feedback type. That will send a history of the advertisements shown to you to the staff so they can track down the misbehaving ad.

So maybe this has always been like this and I'm just unobservant and only noticing it now, but when I set a trinket to a higher item level, the numbers in the trinket effect go down. The main stat goes up like it should, but any effect numbers drop.
Is that something that can be changed or am I doing something wrong or what?
As an example, if I look at the main page for Rezan's Gleaming Eye, it's displayed at 340 ilevel and says it has 205 strength and a 419 haste proc for 15 seconds. If I change that to 400 ilevel, the strength increases to 359 but the haste in the effect goes to 404.

Did you guys lower the amount of lists non-premium can have at any point in time? I was struggling to use the attunement tracker and get anything working, but eventually I deleted 4 of my character's lists and finally some things stopped throwing errors and now most of it appears to be working. Still can't get the attunement tracker to work though. (I also have no idea what a list really is or how I've even ever made any, but that's beside the point I think)

That would have been where I was going after testing. Some extensions for w/e reason block the connection to Blizzard's API so glad you figured that out. If you ever have less than 12 lists and encounter the problem again let me know on that part.

That feature is for Garrison (Draenor) followers. Since Legion and BfA have a static list of followers that everyone unlocks by the main quest lines there isn't really a reason to track them like there was for the Draenor ones.

Are there a lot of background scripts running on the site? I noticed my laptop got way more responsive when I closed the Wowhead tab in Safari. It's an older model of MBP, and at the moment it and my phone are my only real means of accessing the internet, so is there any chance of updating the site to be a little potato-friendlier? ^^

It's their ads / ad delivery system. You can pay for premium (or use an adblocker) and you'll notice an improvement in performance. Barring either of those options your best bet is to not leave a tab running in the background if you don't need it.

Either it hadn't been updated in a long time and required quite a bit of time to gather all the new data necessary to update it from Blizzard's API, or the API just wasn't responding at the time. But it appears to be updating fine now @spark notch

Is the wowhead client not working right now? It tries to update the addon and fails.
And whenever it does this it creates a folder named %WoW-CLASSIC% in the same directory that the client is in.

When you see that @torn geyser you should get back to the Wowhead site on the device this happened on, click Feedback in the upper right corner, and submit an "Advertising issue" type feedback. That will send the Wowhead team a history of the advertisements you were shown so they can track down the misbehaving one 😉

I can assure you this is not a site mix up, and it has occurred on multiple PCs on completely different networks and geographical locations.
I can report it on the WoW forums so more people are aware of the "Advertising Issue" feedback method to try and stop it

Pretty sure it's meant to make the ads easier to accept. If you have a video you know is for the subject of the website, you're less likely to be annoyed by the ads.
Either way, the only official way to remove them is by disabling ads as a premium subscriber.

It serves as a video unit that intersperses videos in between the cinematics. Video ads are more lucrative than static picture ads. You can see these ad units with playing cinematics on other sites like MMOC, Raider.IO and WCL

The filter itself seems to work, so it has to know the haste ratings. They are missing from the table though, maybe a missed/wrong variable somewhere.

theres a small bug in guide descriptions, if you have too many characters it says this:
now when i add one character it becomes this
and then it counts down from 5 to 1 instead of counting up from 1 to x
meaning if you spam characters it will just stay on the "it's 1 character too long" because it wont go below 1

People that run dungeons on Classic need to upload their information to Wowhead for us to start to get loot tables. Dungeons and raids closed for testing will unfortunately be incomplete at this point. There is no encounter journal in classic for us to automatically pull information from in advance.

So, quick question and sorry if this has been asked before. I have been using WoWhead's classic section a lot recently and noticed something. The "Filter by patch:" feature does not seem to filter content imported over from Thottbot. For example if I go to the item "Nightfall" and filter it by 1.12.0 the top comment's are from Thottbot via patch 2.0.12. Is this intended or known? Again, sorry if this was already asked but all my google searches for "Wowhead Classic Known Bugs" and "Wowhead Thottbot Comments" and such really didn't turn up much of anything on it.

So I have a general complaint. The level cap for beta is 30. I was looking through the Classic website and I have been finding raid attunement guides, dungeon guides for level 38, etc. The only way to have this information is from a private server. Since the site is down, I had time to think about what my biggest issue with Wowhead is.
As someone playing the beta, classic.wowhead.com is fantastic, and I love it. I also love that it shows comments from vanilla days, including from Thottbot. However, any links to Thottbot are deadlinks, because the domain redirects to wowhead and returns a 404. This makes any of the richer comments (what makes Wowhead special) sometimes useless.

We're aware of this, the format for URLs on Thottbot don't conform to Wowhead so it would take quite a bit of effort to figure out appropriate routing but it's something we'd like to try to do.

The following case happened to me two times: I was on your website and a few seconds later I got direceted to another website which was a virus-website/attack (it was the same tab/window) and a f*cking deafening sound was playing and saying that "Windows defender detected a virus!" Hello, in the "today in WoW" section it says the arena skirmish event is already active on EU realms, which is not the case because it changes tomorrow. I'm not sure if that's easy to change because the NA event timers are on most of the event pages. Gave me a bit of a shock before checking ingame that timewalking was still active. @smoky oyster presently TIW uses the one event, which has NA date/time, everywhere regardless of region. This means it will be off a day for EU visitors. It is something we'd like to change in the future, but not a high priority. Sorry for the confusion.

As an example, I am not entirely interested in Classic. I feel discouraged to click previous news posts to try to find past news events or use RSS without ever going to the site.
Another thing, is maybe a second News page on your own Profile page for Premium members that you can filter. That way it does not change anything on the Home page.

I guess. I looked at it as here's red, here's blue, they blend and become red/blue. It's not perfect, I just threw it together. Since it's only on mouse over I haven't really fussed with it further. If anyone has animation skills happy to consider any submissions for it. I kind of liked the idea of sky or stars flying by to illustrate flying. Or maybe it turns and winks, lol.

Feedback: One thing that would make the site look more professional is if you let guide authors upload images to embed instead of having external links. As an example, this author has linked non-HTTPS content which won't work when browsing the site on HTTPS with stricter settings.

Guide creators can upload images within the guide editor. It's up to them though how they want images linked. If you'd like them to consider a different approach you could make a polite request as a reply to the guide.

@teal dragon Sorry for the ping, but did you see the updated comment I posted on the wowhead feedback forums about incursion zones? There currently isn't a good way outside the game to see what zone the next invasion will take place in, which could be of interest to people that are missing a zone or want to farm rep with a specific faction related to a zone
And yes, I know that thread is a month old by now, that's why I asked it here since I'd rather not bump it

It's not something we have plans to add in the short-term. Our current focus for Today in WoW is patch 8.2 tracking. We agree there's some use to what you are saying, but we think the 8.2 additions will have more widespread appeal

For any admin out there, you guys probably want to add G Suite to your domain spf record. When I received a reply from feedback@wowhead.com the email was marked as SPF fail (Luckily not hardfail).

hey there, it seems like the replies to comments on the classic wowhead also include ones from later expansions, even though they're shown as "1.12.1" (may have been mixed up somehow) and the dates of the replies to comments are also the same date as the comment they're replying to
if you look here every comment has the same date as the first one, 2006/11/07
now the first reply to the comment also says something about 4.0.6 which would be cataclysm territory
and i know for a fact that he didn't mean anything else for this because there's no way he could have commented on the 2006/11/07 because he didn't even have an account back then
he created the account in 2007 meaning he couldn't even have replied to that comment back then
thats all i've noticed with comment replies for now
some that have an unique date also seem to check out, it's only the duplicate ones that stand out

That message is being displayed because someone else has already added the webhook to that server/channel. You can click the 'Edit Channel' gear icon in Discord to remove existing webhooks.

It may be, I'm really not sure. @icy nebula when Jeeves adds the Wowhead webhook to a channel, and a server admin removes that webhook, is it being properly removed from Wowhead's list so that they can add it themselves? Any ideas how that's working with Jeeves?

Insulting things isn't going to get you anywhere. It sounds like you may have had a bad advertisement showing that was leaking memory. If you submit advertising feedback using the button in the upper right the team will get a list of the most recent advertisements that were shown to you in order to try to track down the offender. Alternatively you can support the site directly with Wowhead Premium.

That's the EU ad disclaimer. If you select an option it will save that preference and not be displayed to you again, but that preference is stored within your browser as a cookie and/or localstorage information. If you, your browser, an extension, etc., blocks the preference from being saved, or deletes it, you'll continue to see it over and over. You'l want to make sure you preferences are being saved and retained from session to session.

Greetings! I'm making a leveling guide / tool web app in preparation for classic release and I'm using the lovely wowhead tooltips but I've encountered an error. I'm using React.js to gather urls from a javascript object and write them to html. The wowhead script then converts the links to an icon + spell name and adds a tooltip on mouseover - however, it only works the first time I load the page. When I interact with the page to dynamically update the list of spells / abilities, it does not format correctly - though the tooltip is working.
I'm assuming this is all me and not the wowhead script's issue in any way - though I'm a bit stuck and just wanted to try my luck here by asking if anyone have encountered a similar issue or know what could be the cause. Would love a point in the right direction. Thanks a bunch in advance!

@thick fox I sent it to devs. They're looking into it but have told me it's not a widespread issue at least. They'll be making adjustments to mitigate the chances of improperly dated comments and replies from showing on Classic. The true dates are likely not recoverable.

The comments for Classic were migrated over based on their date, so since about 8% of comments seemed to have this date issue the devs added a patch exception as well. So if you visit https://classic.wowhead.com/faction=87/bloodsail-buccaneers#comments:id=3106 again you'll see the comment replies that were clearly not Classic have been removed/hidden.

hi guys, just looking at new guides. few inconsistencies with the sidebar - its referred to as a sidebar, quick facts and table of contents - should probably be one of these 3?
also this repeated on every page means a lot of scrolling before you actually get to read anything
also this video and ad on the right takes up a huge amount of screen real estate by blocking the entire column down the page when it could instead be floated in the top right corner or something allowing content to flow around it. it looks ok on a 1920x1080 screen but anything smaller is not great
dont mean to seem negative, the new menu is great and they do look good otherwise

This is a lucrative type of ad unit, because the ads that play in between the Sylvanas video generate more money for the site than static ads, and a lot of movie/video companies are interested in this sort of ad. Wowhead has a lot of development costs, and you'll see this sort of ad on other dev-heavy sites like Raider.IO and Warcraft Logs too. Due to adding units like this, it allows us to continue developing new parts of the site, like funding Wowhead Classic development for several months before that part of the site really generated any traffic.```no worries. i understand its a good location (in terms of$$$)for the ad. good stuff, keep it up

I'm not sure if this is something you guys can fix, but when my mouse is over the table of contents, I expect my scroll wheel to scroll the table of contents. Instead of keeps scrolling the page. I'm not sure how you guys have programmed it, but it's a different behaviour than I think most expect it to work.
(Actually it seems like it's just buggy, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, so who knows)

@mystic zenith, I'm sorry, but I'm not really sure what else to suggest. The only way I've been able to replicate it is to block the Wowhead JavaScript and, other than using an add-on, there's no "easy" way to do it, so I'd imagine you'd remember it.

Found the problem. It's the content. In the one I provided, there are tables that push outside of the content area:
Fix the table width and the horizontal scrollbar goes away:
The tables don't look as pretty, but they don't break the new design.

We just wrap our tables in DIVs and then under a certain page width, the DIV scrolls left and right so the page doesn't have to 🤷 I think that's how most css frameworks do it too.

Yeah, it's a common design in modern web development, but it produces the taboo horizontal scrollbar. To make it worse, additional scrollbars within the page is another big taboo. If done right, it works out fairly well, it's just painfully difficult to do well. xD

Tooltip data like that generally comes from the game data, it's not something that is manually entered.
