It is meant to be in your direct view so you aren't looking all over your screen. Everything you want should be close to your center of vision, to minimalize distraction

I can handle it in FFXIV because the in-game storytelling vehicle is actually good, but if WoW took anywhere near as long to get through the questing I'd be so bored.
