It runs on server, but local effect.
initServer.sqf runs on the server that might be a player too
initPlayerLocal.sqf runs on every machine with a player, which might be the server
or do I misunderstand what you are saying…?
As of now, the mission is EBO'd so no it's not possible
what is EBO ?
arf :/ nevermind, thanks anyway !
how would I reload the gun drone? I know I have to take the weapon of it, but I cant find out how to take it off? am I missing something?
if you are trying in multiplayer, there is currently an issue that breaks the functionality
in sp you should see a new action for it
Exactly, which means that if you put it into initServer.sqf, it will be seen locally on host/server, but not on clients. You're confusing local effect with global
Is that planned to be fixed?
hey guys, how much mission content is in this dlc?
of course
2 missions irc, one is an open world campaign and the other is a "horde" defence with varying locations
- some training or showcase stuff
vr showcase with various simulations
So what is the function of the desert module? It just makes it kick up sand?
And Post Process effect.
I already had to delete over half a dozen messages from you.
If you refuse to keep this kinda garbage out of this discord, we might instead keep you out of this discord.
#rules, no politics, no illegal stuff.
Just found the "Fire on my Shot" - That's going to make it easier.
Is Extraction intended to be a persistent mission?
that is, I'm pretty sure you lose progress if the mission restarts
this wouldn't normally be an issue but I ran into a softlock with the checkpoint defense mission
how can one unlock the other areas in the last stand mode?
if I'm not mistaken they are random, no need to unlock
thanks a lot!
A question about a BLUFOR faction; the United Assistance
Is there a particular reason why they were named like so instead of being the UN? After all, the organisation had already been present in previous Arma instalments. Or are they a separate entity altogether?
i just brought the western sahara dlc but don't seem to find the portable ballistic shield, anyone know where to look for it?
in the virtual arsenal it's under backpacks
it's legal reasons. the UN became quite ... picky about how they are portrayed in media, which wasn't the case yet back when A2, etc. was released.
however, from ingame lore point of view, you could also see them as a different group than the real UN. i think it's just a matter of how the story is framed.
Interesting. I thought this sort of limitation was exclusive to cDLC's given that the United Nations was mentioned in passing in Apex Protocol.
Then again, it might be fine if they're just referenced.
if it's just a single namedrop, nobody will really care.
I was going to say, a name drop is a far cry from an actual portrayal
idap is basically the icrc so I imagine it’s also for story continuity purposes as well
like a reference but not a exact portrayal
like all the 2035 factions
Hey guys, im playing extraction on single player and i want to transport the transport truck and i want to have my AI follow me in another vehicle but they wont follow my truck, how do i make the AI vehicle follow my vehicle?
Make sure they're in the driver seat and order it to return to formation
Sometimes they stop following for no reason, just order again
If that don't work, then something is wrong
i find it useful to set them into column formation
then they stay behind you
what you can also do is to drive the 2nd vehicle yourself and order the 1st vehicle to a target location on the 2d map. then just drive behind the vehicle. that usually works the most smooth for me.
if you see something happening or if you want to scout ahead, just order the 1st vehicle to stop. rinse and repeat..

how can one unlock the other areas in the last stand mode?
I think this question stems from the map diary section having images of the locations with a lock icon on them. I've wondered this myself, since you can already select them all via parameters. Figured something would happen when you beat 10 waves, but still haven't managed 😊
- 2 Time Trials! 🏎️
I tend to set formation to file then tell the driver of other vehicles to regroup. Then wherever I go, they just drive right behind me.
this keeps track of what locations you have finished before 🙂
if you manage to survive a location, it get's unlocked in the diary
it's a bit like achievements
this is saved in the player profile variable, so it gets remembered
(you don't have to survive them all in one go)
btw. you can also change the amount of waves in the mission parameters. i think the minimum waves are 7 (not 100% sure right now)
Yeah, but it would hurt our ego too much to lower it 😛
Technically yes, since only dedicated servers can have the mission running without players on it.
The mission doesn't have any save system so that would be the only way to do it; use a dedicated server and set it so the server won't close the mission after everybody leaves.
Nope
That's what the trick is for
You'd need a server that can stay up 24/7 theoretically
Np
It shouldn't be too hard tbh
I'd say an extraction session takes around 4-5 hours
if you're going for all objectives
Extraction was cool, we need more open map game modes like this and old man, I love finding secrets like a busted up apc in the middle of a minefield that I could repair. I hope to see more open map stuff for single player people like me.
Hello Lexx did you see this fix reloading? Will this be incorporated in the next patch? https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2663567286&searchtext=
yeah it was funny, I liked that
I'm planning on making an extraction-like gamemode that's map/modset agnostic soon. its really unfortunate the mission is EBO'd 🙁
but, oh well. it is what it is I suppose
Would love to play something like that, if you need playtesters... think of me
i will post it on the workshop once it's ready enough, def interested in playtesting. The alive random missions are a good start + make it pretty easy to get it going at a basic level, but i wanna have more like... story related missions occasionally too. Like 'assassinate this one guy from the arma 3 story and find intel on him' kinda thing, like what's in Extraction
So if i can add input, i love that Extraction gave you access to the armory, but it was too overpowered, it should have been limited items cos the Viper suit is op. so a set wardrobe and armory specific to the faction you play as, i would love to see the ability to pick a side also.
but i also like how old man also made you go out and search for new or better equipment rather than just handing it to you, so perhaps a limited starter arsenal, some stores and equipment hidden around the map?
you are right, but then there is no way for players to use modded weapons / clothes in the scenario
I guess the only way to solve that would be to have a mission parameter. However if you want to play in a more balanced and realistic way then you can always just be strict with yourself and others as to what leaves the base
no save in coop is pretty disappointing
I admit, it hurts a bit
tbh even just saving the intel% would be enough
Speedrun Extraction
any%?
the hardest part about intel is not to collect it, it's to decide to bring it back before dying 😆
Any way to get more slots in Extraction?
if you died inside a vehicle and it exploded, ur body disappear along with the intels in your inventory.
I managed to yoink the BTR-K attacking the checkpoint,
had to resist the urge to use it throughout the rest of the campaign 😄
well the Marid also there to cap
Luckily the game doesn't simulate having to go through all the intel and having to draw the right conclusions. 'Cause that actually is the hardest part 😉
yeah that too - I wondered if it would reveal pieces of photography or intel for us to link the dots
Like screenshots?
like text, shredded photo, conversations fragments etc and the location would have to be guessed from it
That would be amazing! Actually being able to take pictures with the camera and pinning them to some ingame whiteboard so that everybody can take a closer look via space, would be a pretty cool start.
wooould need some screenshot-texture link that unfortunately doesn't exist in Arma 3
(though it would be lovely)
sadly we merely just a small PMC group and not some high Budget undercover CIA agency.
Just planting a seed for future reference …
heh another CDLC sets in the 80s, KGB vs CIA stuff
No, that's not what I meant. After all it has to be a feature in the game core
I have a little problem
Every Time I place the Mortar from the Sahara CSAT Team my game crashes
only the mortar nothing else
the static mortar?
The idea that I had for the mission I'm planning on doing after I play Extraction some more for ideas (yes very good excuse to play video games 😛) is that each x % of intel you get will place a circle on the map of where the journalist could be
you could do with a % that reduces the amount of potential places, and a % that reduces the size of such areas 😉 accuracy & precision 🙂
but it's like, a big circle. like 1 km. so maybe this could be a difficulty thing. Low difficulty gets you a circle marked every 15%, medium is 25%, high is 50%. so depending on how hard you want to make it/how grindy you want it to be you would get more or less info.
well the idea I had was these circles would overlap, so you'd know to look in the overlapping area as you get more intel
so you can either go check out the overlap or keep going for more intel
but yeah, I definitely need to think more on how to do this because I think that would be a lot more fun than just getting told exactly where to go
splitting accuracy and precision is an interesting idea. Maybe different types of intel get you different things
yeah the mortar under turrets
Hey guys, will there be any saving progression option in the multiplayer?
cDLC*
@warped carbon make a better one
Don't feed the troll
He doesn't even own the base game
@warped carbon I would buy it 😘
I don't think I asked you but ok 😬
How can you "review" a DLC if you havent even played it. Also #creator_dlc_discussion is for general queries
Yet you keep spamming with stuff noone needs
seen better trolls 1/10
I'd say 2/10 because he made you answer 😉
nah. that's where the 1 comes from
otherwise it would be 0/10
problem is, it's too in-your-face. trolling needs to be done subtle, in a way that people won't know they are being trolled.
this is just too obvious.
Wonder what happened to him to feel like Arma is so bad
Maybe he got banned from Some life server?
Guys. Please learn to read ^
Ok
Ok
Last time now. Stop feeding the troll.
Ok (
sometimes i wonder how can people like this.
anyway, is it possible to extract the 'extraction' mission to editor?
had a situation last night in multiplayer extraction where we played through to 100%, found Sully, did the "unbind" and then nothing, no reaction, no ability to give squad commands
even shot him dead
was running on linux dedicated server for both cases
im having an issue with some of the opfor sahara units returning as SoldierGB in the config
(think they should be SoldierEB )
is this a known thing?
Are you looking to play with people?

Hey, sorry, are there any plans to add the ability to save a multiplayer extraction scenario? It seems silly to me that a mode designed for 4 players doesn’t have this feature already
sadly arma 3 is very touchy when it comes to saving games in multiplayer
not sure what you mean. any more details?
i see what you mean, but not sure if there is much we can do without overhauling lots of stuff. i just checked how a3 handles the different FIA sides, and they are all inhering from those same classes as well
That’s unfortunate news 😞
Mods can do that, why "BI supported" "cdlc" can't?
honest question as it sound ridiculous to me
because modded mp saving has stability issues that can't be resolved in Arma 3 and will cause people to review bomb the cDLC with "wth wth my gaim saves but some time broken wth"
If the dlc is getting review bombed for anything I can almost guarantee you it’ll be the lack of the ability to save a multiplayer extraction scenario
it won't
I had a lot of fun with the scenario with a buddy of mine but it just isn’t feasible to run a dedicated server so we can keep our progress, and it’s not really feasible for us to complete it in one sitting either and I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels this way, and if nothing can or will be done about it that’s perfectly okay, I’m not trying to be an asshole about it or anything I was just voicing a suggestion I had.
you also have to bear in mind that it's all EBOed (encrypted) so there may be some critical issues with proper reading and saving such mission. The only way I can think of is to release a mod like SOG did with Mike Force, so devs can just ignore any responsibilities
and I think that it will be a thing quite soon, but unofficial
I feel like that would be a good compromise for everybody, and if something like that does get released on the workshop I’d be pretty happy
you can already play DRO on this cDLC's map afaik, it's kind of the same type of scenario
im gonna be honest man they really could just save the intel percentage to profilenamespace and that would be sufficient
thanks for the reply. ill have to use bohemia opfor dudes 😦
ALiVE can save a whole bunch of stuff, liberation saves things, antistasi can save things despite the spaghetti code. all extraction needs to save is the intel percent and maybe a few other things if you really want to polish it (maybe save whether you've killed x warlord so you dont repeatedly have to kill the same guy, maybe save how much the local civilian population likes you)
in any case the dlc shouldnt be getting review bombed its good. some (pretty small) warts shouldn't be getting it review bombed 🙄
I wouldn’t even be that mad if it had me repeat like kill X person missions if the intel percentage saved
yeah. if only it wasn't an ebo and we could fix that ourselves 🤷
I hope it’s something that gets solved one way or another with time, hopefully sooner rather than later but it’s my only issue with the dlc, so that’s pretty good too overall
its good dlc
ebo is another thing that modder community took without reality-check backlash. Expecting future bi titles to be less open for modding.
If you mean in the sense of DLCs being encrypted and not open like Lite DLCs... well 'the fix was in' so to speak once the A3 DLC direction was announced
@fallow raft tbh I agree I really don't like EBOs
I understand the justification but arma's biggest strength is its mod community and the CDLCs are proof of that
But once money comes into play when it comes to modders... well, you've seen the discourse about that for every CDLC
Including said CDLC devs' own words on the importance of 'getting paid for it'
I hope that with time they are decrypted, like how enoch/expansion were encrypted for some time and then eventually re-released as pbos
oh I agree with them. Being paid means that they can and will put in better work
sorry if this is an faq, couldnt find anything on search - to play WS on a dedi server do i just need the -ws flag upon start ? Seems like the mission list is empty.
-mod=ws
sorry that's what i meant, yes. But it seems like that's not enough, or at least i cant see any missions for the sefrou-ramal map in the server's lobby. I'm trying to play extraction - maybe i'm doing it wrong
does the client have the mod loaded as well @lusty jolt
yes. i put the ws dir onto the server from that client. Maybe that was incorrect ?
#server_admins may help you better
here's a bit of a head scratcher
ive got western sahara but my friends dont
i run a modpack and they connect to my server so it sets the mods up for them
if i have the western sahara compatibility pack loaded AND the actual DLC is there going to be issues?
why would you have both…?
you dont need both loaded
i want to be able to load with the compatibility pack so it sets it up for my friends and they can see what im using
i know i dont need both loaded
its so my friends who join my server can see
they can join your server with the compatability data
thats the point of the compatability data
they can download it individually
yes
i was just wondering if i have it loaded to save them the effort would it create issues
I.E that way every person who joins doesnt need to seek out the mod just connect through
how would it save them effort, I'm not really following here
then i dont need to get all my friends to find and download the pack
when they join my server itll do it for them
oh, you mean in the launcher
i'm not sure about that. How are you hosting the server? yourself or a dedi?
myself
its really handy letting them unload all mods, join through server and it automatically loads what they need
as in you're hosting from inside arma 3?
yep
i dont see why it would create an issue beyond taking up an extra 3gb on my drive but idm
was just wondering if anyone knew
if you don't mind having 2 copies of it downloaded I think you could load the compat data on your machine yeah
but don't load both
so load compat data but dont load western sahara?
that should work yes
and ill be able to use the weapons from the compat data?
nice
good idea, ill give it a try
the compat data just checks if you own the dlc and if you don't it shows the nags
since you own the dlc there's no issue
aye, i didnt think of that
and with compat data it even showed the DLC missions
so im assuming it is quite literally identical to the DLC except downloadable on the workshop
yes but it won't let you play on the map unless you own the dlc
bohemia is alive as it is solely because of modding community & open platform. It would be underwater/barely profitable otherwise
If by modder community took without reality-check backlash you meant 'modders didn't criticize BI enough for implementing encrypted 'PBOs' for the first time'... I vaguely recall certain modders who actually wanted to release missions or mods as EBOs specifically so that others couldn't open them
is the DLC on sale for anyone else? It says its 15% off on the arma store page but when I got to the western sahara store page it isnt 15% off
It's not in a sale right now according to SteamDB
yep, and why not allow them? Because that would mean death of modding as we know it.
Out of curiosity, do you mod Arma?
yep. 4 yrs.
Kinda stopped (switched to UE4) but got back to finish some unfinished stuff.
Well, not gonna annoy you anymore, just stated my views. There are a lot of modders who don't sit in discord. They won't complain either, they'll either adjust or switch over (a lot already did).
ion zamak truck is bugged
i dont see the wheels and the body
i just see the cabin
Do you have any mods on?
quite alot actually 😅
so its possible that it may be just a mod conflict
aegis apparently has some issues with that.
Yeah, don't use Aegis with WS for the time being. Until they release an update
my pmc buddies are only walking when I give them a move command
is there a way to get them to run?
they're on "aware" atm
We are playing the extraction coop mission right now. We got to the Hostage and uncuffed him, but he is still sitting on the ground and we dont get progress
only way they'll run is if they're grouped up on you and you're running
best to use single player command menu if you are playing solo with AI
is this behaviour because of WS? It doesn't happen when I command AI squadmates otherwise.
Anyone ever see the AI stuck in default pose?
is there more than one cache?
i blew it up with an explosive charge but the objective isn't completing.
Are they both outside? I've checked over half the buildings but nothing
yeah
copy, thanks
check around the zamaks
Found it! thanks
found a lot of intel too but the prompt to deposit it isn't coming up
OK, work around is to dump intel on ground, switch to a squadmate, pick up intel, then the deposit prompt comes up
Any one having issues with ACRE/TFAR and use this CDLC's map or im i just being dumb.
I know ACRE dont have a comp patch yet, anyone know if there will be one any time soon... but it should still work but only with arcade mode.
did test zeus mission tonight and could not get TFAR or ACRE to work on the new map...has anyone encounter issue with radio mods on this map
WS compat is part of today’s dev release
Maybe clarify what issues you encounter. We had a big mission yesterday with TFAR and we encountered no issues
You can always use ACRE Arcade mode
tried and could not get voice proximity or radio comms to work...maby im doing something wrong but could not get either to works
so for TFAR its says not connected to game and not currently ingame...tested with three players all same issue.
correct me if im wrong for acre...
- load mod on client and server.
- make sure plugin installed (restart ts if needed)
- rename ts channel and do cba setting to auto move
Then your TFAR is not properly setup, it does not need a compat
ACRE needs compat mod for non Arcade mode
yes or arcade mode right?
Yes
well properly something silly on my side...ill have a look tommorow with fresh eyes
thx guys
@modern walrus last thing...will compt patch be added to acre or seperate download?
Both
sweet
All compats are optional subfolders but also standalone workshop mods
Hi! There's a bug while playing Extraction on singleplayer where if you get downed and you used one of your Ai teammates to heal you the skull appears, the screen dims and it doesn't go away after healing up.
what are you supposed to do after you unbind him?
not trying to be too harsh here but it is kind of frustrating to 1. have a (paid) dlc mission with bugs in it that cause softlocks and 2. have no way to fix it. like most other missions I can just turn on the debug console and fix issues as they arise, or even just pop into Zeus. But when I play extraction for quite literally 4 hours and then can't get the journalist to get up it leaves a bad taste in my mouth
There's no revive system in Extraction singleplayer tho...
Arma is still Arma. It worked fine for me personally
I don't expect arma to work perfectly 100% of the time but that's my point. like make it more resilient, have ways of restarting/retriggering missions
or give me ways to fix it when it breaks
i see thanks!
So if I go down. I have to load a save?
you can load the Single Player Cheat Menu mod and have access both to zeus and console
that's probably smart
hey uhh, can I join anyone with the extraction gamemode?
I cant find any servers with it
#looking_for_game is the best channel to find other people playing
ive been playing with lxWS_fnc_showDust (part of the duststorm module) in mp, i realize the effects are local, but how much of a problem is it really, lose some fps , gain a ton of ambience.
uh, there should not be a revive system in sp. i guess you are using some mod?
Just found the camera yesterday, nice. Now I really want this to be part of vanilla Arma :/ This CDLC just would fit in so nicely
Or switch to one of your Squad mates
70*30
Steal the UN repair truck and repair it to 100% 😄
still having problems with AI squadmates just walking when I give them a command, rather than running
this is behaviour I've only seen in WS
is there a way to reset the squad?
did you try changing their combat mode?
Yes. This is on "aware"
I'll do some testing
At FOB, switched to Unit 4 and gave some commands to my squad (Units 1 and 2).
Set mode to "aware" and gave a move command. 1 & 2 walked there, guns up and aiming.
Gave another move command and set mode to "safe" - 1 & 2 walked as expected, guns down and relaxed.
Moved Unit 4 away and issued a "regroup" command, set mode to "aware" - 1 & 2 ran over as expected, vanilla behaviour.
Issued a move command, mode set to "combat" - 1 & 2 ran to the point and went prone on arrival.
Selecting Unit 4 as the squad lead doesn't really make a difference. This behaviour is regardless of which unit I've switched to and am issuing commands from.
thing is, our mission is doing nothing with the ai behaviour
so whatever is going on, the tl;dr is probably.. no idea
There's a repair HEMTT at the UN outpost
And there are ammo crates and small flexible fuel barrels at the ION FOB
fair enough. I'll try hiring a new contractor and see if he behaves the same
Guys, any idea how to save multiplayer game in Extraction mission?
server has to be persistent
Dedicated server
Well, thank you anyway
or keep your arma and pc online 24/7
tips on clearing up mines?
Don't get blown up
Watch your step
spot them with T until a triangle rounds them
lie down
move forward in slow ("walk") mode until you see the action menu
disarm
very slow approach: lie down, face the mine, turn 45°, move laterally until the mine is close
if you are too far away when it is in front of you, turn 45° again, rince and repeat
German minefield saying: Wer suchet, der findet, wer drauftritt verschwindet.
Who seeks shall find, who steps on goes blind, rough translation
Is it somehow possible to fast travel with your squad or can you only do it alone in Extraction (singleplayer)?
your squad will follow you if you use the fast travel option
unless you tell them to stop moving, then they will stay where they are
they were following me but when i went to fast travel i was parachuting alone and my guy was at the fob (didnt land, idk if that changes smth)
If you have Contact use the ED-1D Mini UGV it auto spots mines in a 50m radius. Drive it in a SAR pattern around the mine field. It can safely drive over AP mines to detonate them, and disarm AT mines with the slug launcher.
Alternatively you can demine with shotgun shells and many med kits.
I was able to clear the minefield in 15 minutes with this method. ~45 with the shotgun and a strong will.
uh done, one of my squad just bombard the whole village and its clear.
Yeah I was also going to say anything that blows up generally works too.
My friend point and clicked on the mines with the gun drone.
Mission: clear village of mines to win hearts and minds
- Bombards whole village
Complete sucess
kinda wondering are PMCs following Geneva convention too?
and using rule of engagement just like regular army
Yeah I use a list of mods. Ace no medical (Updated) was the one I thought could give some problems because somehow in sp Ai don't react well with the original ace added when it comes to healing
https://www.diplomaticourier.com/posts/are-private-military-companies-pmcs-exempted-from-geneva-conventions here's your answer, good article too
There's also the demining drone from Laws of War that drops small explosives to clear the mines.
Only works if youre a civ iirc
Ah, that's right. It's maybe worth a try though
The DLC or the Extraction Mission?
On the mission the worst thing you'll find is a BTR-K
And then you also have your regular armored technicals
maybe it's something in the save file? loaded a fresh eden editor SP mission with 3 riflemen and they ran when given a move command. I'm no expert but I can't help feeling it's something to do with the unit switch function.
The AA is the completely new vehicle, yes
There's also the drone
Although I guess not 100% new
drone is actually 110% new
it's completely made from scratch and no old models were used as base
Was western sahara ever considered to be a base-game addition similar to APEX?
or was that option just shut down out the gate cause it was a CDLC
isBaseGame = !CDLC;
bummer 😧
Hey, everytime I place the MK6 Mortar under Turrets my game crashes any suggestions?
try checking your game files
Steam file verification process:
Right Click on game -> Local Files -> Verify Integrity of game files
Mod repair process:
Open Launcher -> Right Click on mod -> Repair
no crash on my end, so yeah, verifying files should probably do the trick
Welp, everytime I verify game files it restores 10 files --> placing mortar again --> game crashes --> Again replacing 10 files --> cycle continues
I'm probaly doing a clean reinstall
Does the Compat Data have general limitations or can it tell apart people who actually own the CLDC? e.g., if it was to be run standalone without the actual CDLC - in an instance where there's people who both own and don't own it, would there be any differences between those two groups of people if only the Compat Data is loaded?
Oh? I thought it was the Laws of War one. They look very similar. That's cool to know
we based it off of it, but the model is completely new
Well, amazing work!
compat data is exactly same data as the one you install as DLC.
So if you own the DLC it will work the same as DLC...
e.g. the only thing not available would be the terrain correct? It'd function just as a vanilla DLC - whereas the non-owners can not use/equip the items nor drive the vehicles but owners can? Basically I wanna know if the compat data can identify owners on it's own.
the compatibility data itself doesnt identify anything. the game / steam checks if you own the c/dlc and then either shows adverts or not
you can watch the terrain in 3den, but you wont be able to play on it
so for example if I wanted to run just the compat data, everything would work as normal? e.g. I own the CDLC, so I can use the XMS - but if someone else doesn't, they can not / would get the popups, as per the usual vanilla DLC behaviour? Same with getting in driver seats of vehicles pertaining to the CDLC?
yes
thank you
Finished Extraction. Brilliant brilliant brilliant. More please.
If I didn't know better I'd think it was developed by Bohemia themselves. I really hope they consider adding WS assets to the base game. Would love to play as UNA in pub zeus.
while it would be cool, I highly doubt that, as has been discussed many times
It's really good content but it's just a shame its closed off behind a small bit of cash
Be something to have all that stuff added to the sandbox, deployable shields n' all
🤠 Mod's good, but won't stack up to just being able to boot vanilla and find official servers
WS' playercount vs. Vanilla playercounts really
I really like the detail how with the FAL when you mount a light it is taped on the rifle with duct tape
as it doesn't have rails or that weird system the XM8 used
how do i create a server for me an my friends to play on for the extraction mode
can you host on your PC? Need to have some specific ports unlocked and a decent PC
Open game > Multiplayer > Host server
If you have a modem that supports UPNP you can just check that and it will automatically open the ports if they aren't already open.
Anyone know where to find the intel in The Robber part of Argana Part 1
this is not a channel for non-official mission support, ask the mod's author
They need to own the DLC to play missions on the DLC terrain.
I'm having a error code when I load up the dlc, it says anims error everytime
try verifying game integrity via steam
Mkay
I started up arma and its tells me I need animals_f_IxWS
after verification?
It had already been saying it
I have no mods on rn
And I have no dlcs
Except from shara
something is wrong with the files. don't know why, though. maybe steam has issues with it because the file size is much smaller than usually.
you can try another workaround. download the compatibility data and copy&paste all files from the workshop mod folder into the arma 3 ws folder https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2636962953
the compatibility data is basically the same stuff, it's just downloaded from a different source
someone else mentioned a while ago that this worked
I was just trying to play the rescue mission but it kept crashing because of an error
So I'll see if that works
Side note: I'm loving the shooty mc shoot face drone and the bootleg XM8's
hello everyone, I'm replaying the Extraction scenario, a strange thing happened that didn't happen in the first game, I just finished the first assignment and I'm returning to base, on the way back when I approach the UNA FOB all trucks and cars explode in that base; I want to ask, is this a random event or a bug? thx
yeah that's a bug, few people reported it
Thank you for the answer, do you think it may have been caused by the "m3mory" mod? in the first game I didn't use it and everything went well ...
What does the mod do? Mods can cause very unexpected results when things are originally made without them
hi, I'm stuck in a mission of western sahara. The task is- find and destroy weapon caches. but i can't find those in the area.
they are usually near trucks (at least for my playthrough), you will see netted crates with an explosives box nearby (in small spots, between closed walls?)
grab the explosive, satchel the crates and you're good
okay. thanks
or Zeus your way to victory 😄
Always the best strategy
Hello, it must have been asked already, (sorry)
Is there a way to do the CDLC scneario on a server with mod and multiplayer ? is the mission file public ?
Hi,
negative the mission itself is one of the main assets of the CDLC, so it requires CDLC ownership 🙂
Solo only then ?
wait, I am not sure we are talking of the same thing then 😅
if you own the CDLC, you can host the game
I don't know how to set it up on a dedicated server though
We played the extraction mission on my server. As long the cdlc is activated/installed on the server you can start it. We played it with Global Mobilization. The Assets will appear in the arsenal.
But it wojld be nice to get the mission.pbo to edit it. I dont like the modern stuff from2035
To play the mission on other maps could be awesome too.
Dedicated server needs to be set to the CDLC branch
use creatordlc branch and start server with -mod=ws
Danke! 🙇♂️
*Mercy!
honestly the SLR having it where when you put a flashlight on it, it will be taped on, makes me wish we had something like that for the Apex AKM and AKS-74U
love it
should i buy this dlc or should i buy something else? i own only marksmen
iirc there is a hidden AKM with a flashlight on it
I know, I am saying that if they did it like the SLR, so that it is not hidden and is an actual option for the AKM
Ah understood.
I recall Apex DLC also planned a M4 but was scraped later
Hi guys, I have a Quick question about the Extraction scenario.
Where can I rearm myself?
(I need 7.62 ammo for my Mk18 ABR)
I tried the armory at the FOB, but I can't find ammo in there.
Any help would be appreciated 🙏
ammo is for sure in the arsenal
Hmm.. so where can it be found?
Under what main category?
When I select the Mk18, I can only see attachments
Click backpack, then on the right tab select ammo
Ahhhh thanks!
Didn't thought about looking there
I'll try again as soon as social life lets me 😃
Increased wall thickness on refugee tents to prevent players from vaulting inside.
Nice, some people are real experts in this, like getting out of Art of War expo.
it's a bit of a fight against windmills. sadly there is only so much that one can do :>
I saw that they can be opened when edited in the editor
yes, they work like the laws of war tents
apex has AKM with attached flashlight as far i remember "arifle_AKM_FL_F"
I know about the hidden one, just wish it was an option to attach it to the AKM in the way the SLR in WS does it
since the hidden just has it attached, and its in a bit of an awkward position IMO
Any idea what might happen (maybe in a long-term?) if I use enableSaving command in Extraction mission with this mod enabled? https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2648482641&searchtext=m3mory
Btw, aren't you the same @hallow widget I know from No Mutants Allowed? 🙂
yes, that's me
not sure what happens if you use that mod. none of us has tried it out
Just wanna check and see, maybe that might be a workaround! Great job on DLC and these classic FO projects, enjoyed playing them 😉
Oh wow, it actually works! Everything loaded seamlessly. Testing this further...
if I have western sahara, can a friend try extraction if i host
nope, they would need the terrain which is not present in the free data pack
Fair enough. Thanks!
is there somewhere I can find all of the Western Sahara soundtrack with tracks & durations?
in the editor's debug console, use utils 4
hopefully you will find their duration (not guaranteed)
https://community.bistudio.com/wiki/Arma_3:_Utilities#Jukebox
that worked like a charm, thank you
So why is admin disabled on pubzeus Western Sahara servers? It's really annoying when you have 100m distance from players non-editable and really screws up the whole fun of Zeusing
Also, sometimes Zeus bugs out and puts you in full black screen and just doesn't work until server restart
ah, then do something else
if you did play with mods then unloaded them, you cannot continue
play with the same mods (if this is the issue)
no it worked fine util update
no as in "no mods involved" or no as in "I can't since the update"?
1st option: you may need to restart from scratch, IDK
2nd option: check your mods as said
the update changed lots of things in the mission
you can't continue with an old savegame
if you mean the recent v1.02 update
if I want to define the classes for the sounds (.ogg) from the soundtrack of WS, under what directory can I find them under in @A3/?
you can find out using the Config Browser
thanks I got it now 👍
and now i can't drop intel
Just completed Extraction, and it was pretty cool, but cDLC itself has a bit of flaws
- Map is too empty, considering it's sizes. Now, I am not saying that entire map should be covered in settlements to a point there is no empty places anymore, but few more settlements/abandoned villages will add more desert and insurgent atmosphere to map.
- Since there is (free) full Arsenal at FOB in Extraction, it is extremely easy to exploit that fact for missions, like carrying mortar backpacks with you to bomb objectives or shooting straight from base
- Galat ARMs reloading animation looks very similar to AK-12 reload animation. Not saying it's bad thing, but it would be better if, maybe second hand get's used too in animation to load chamber?
- SLR GLs muzzle grenade launcher's ironsights don't work with many of optics, for example with MRCO. Moving ironsights to left or right of barrel might fix that problem though, or not making SLR GL compatable with optics except for ACOs.
|| 5. Not sure if it's intentional or not, but there are double reinforcements at Extraction task. (first wave comes in, and then second wave after some time) ||
But, the cDLC is still overall very cool, considering this :
- cDLC doesn't add lot's of weapons, but those added are pretty high quality and have amazing reload sounds
- Extraction is pretty good as you now actually need to run around corpses to find intel and not pick it up from floor.
- AI drivers hop out of Offroad HMG (UP) when gunner is down, thus making it less annoying to take out such technicals
- Quality of gear and equipment added is high, and some of them are so good that I would love them too see in vanilla game too, like Portable Shield or AP-5 drone. (also UNA stuff)
- Map is overall good, but lacks strategic points or places for setting up operations or missions.
Overall, this cDLC is 4.5/5, it's very good but still few small flaws thaf can be fixed easily (if we don't count map part)
The full arsenal is so people can easily use mods.
Preventing mortars and other cheese strats are mostly a self-regulation thing.
People probably stop doing it after one or two runs once the novelty wears off
And feel like shooting something
Extraction and cDLC are already cool, since you get new guns to play around with, so I don't think you really need mods to enjoy the mission
Trust me, from my experience in pubzeus that is rarely a case
Not the point. You don't need mods to enjoy the mission, but the devs understand people might enjoy it more with mods that let them use the equipment they like.
I've ran WS pubs a few times, I've usually see people pull the mortar once or twice and get bored of it when they noticed is just looking at a screen and clicking the green dots.
Yeah, but maybe atleast add some restriction on gear, like Warlords have one? Since mortars can be used by trolls, and I already see that happening massively in future, where some troll is gonna be joining Extraction servers, setting up mortars and bombing either friendly positions or journalist position to fail mission.
WS?
Oh, right
Warlords is a PvP mode that needs to be balanced so people can have fun.
Extraction is just 4 homies having a good time for a few hours
Well, you just haven't seen standart Altis pubzeus servers, but due to fact all WS pubzeuses don't allow you to change parameters at all, I don't think official servers are gonna see any activity until update for servers
Ye, but trolls are main problem
It's not gonna be fun if somebody joins your server you have been running for 2 hours, set's up mortar and bombs you and journalist, causing mission to fail
I've already given howitzers and full arsenals on altis pubzeus. Artillery isn't really much of a problem.
Zeus just need to know how to counter it.
You are lucky not to face any trolls then
And I had a troll last night in extraction. Killed Pegasus and all that jazz.
It's a very rare occurrence
Yeah, but it still happens
You'll probably get perfect clears multiple times in extraction until a troll shows up.
And usually they get kicked pretty quickly
Yeah, but if troll manages to shoot mortar, you won't be able to destroy that shot ammunition
It's not worth it to limit the arsenal on the off-chance that someone will troll a public match
And I'm saying it's not worth it to limit the arsenal on the off-chance that someone will troll a public match
If you remove the mortar they'll just fire HE MAAWS rockets at the journalist
Yeah, but that will require troll to be there
If you remove the MAAWS they'll just shoot him in the back of the head
While mortar he can use right from FOB
And?
If he wants to troll he will
He'll just pretend to be playing and blow up the journalist
i can't drop intel
Or wait until they bring him back to base and blow up the helicopter or car he's in
Hi, is any content from WS available for use in missions with players that don't own the DLC? To clarify, look at Jets DLC for example - any player can participate in missions using the DLC (perhaps as infantry) but non-owners cannot get in the DLC jets. Would it be possible to do something similar with say the AP-5 drone in a custom mission on Altis?
Ah great, yes that is what I was looking for. Thanks!
Any tips for playing Extraction single player?
don't die
also always have 3 guys with you, one with a launcher, bring some suppressed guns and snipe everything
Thanks, I've generally been the one to bring the launcher. I'll start running some suppressed rifles.
That sounds like a good idea.
drones are always a good idea, and when you have a swarm of them you don't even need to raise your weapon
but if you wan't a more kosher way of doing desert American PMCs then infantry-only playstyle is amazing
I've been going infantry only, and it's been going really poorly. So I think I'll embrace the US style of warfare and call in a drone.
suppressed 7.62 and a launcher will suffice, bringing in a drone as backup seems like a good idea. Use the AI to cover your back give 360
I really enjoy paying last stand in this DLC. However, it would be way better if you could play as different factions. Is this planed to be in the following updates?
Having campaign/open world scenario as another factions will be great idea to do, since you will be able to get taste of all factions and their equipment
Also, SLR is best gun added by this cDLC, since it has best reload animation and sound for animation
A bit loud but still very cool sound
modders will do that soon
if not already, there's plenty of WS scenarios with different factions that try to follow the canon
I know, but having official one will be cool too
I am also probably gonna do some missions for it, but for now I have to complete building my 12-mission long campaign
Actually speaking of canon, are there any aspects of WS's story that directly contradict the ARMA canon?
I don't think
That's good. I really like the 2035 setting and it's been a while since we got a proper expansion.
Yeah
Good evening. Congrats for the nice work done so far. I would like to know, if possible, how I could know the values of the Post Process of Sahara (to be clear, already present in your module). I thank you in advance.
i can't find the extraction values right now, but the desert module post processing config is colorCorrections[] = {1,1.02,-0.005,{0,0,0,0},{1,0.8,0.6,0.65},{0.199,0.587,0.115,0}};
Thanks again, really.
I like the 5.56 Galil/R4 with Western Sahara but I'd like a wooden furniture variant of it too, are there any mods of this?
Question about the Extraction scenario:
Did anyone ever find any documents or evidence on the missing journalist on any dead body??
Just finished the "defend checkpoint" mission and over all missions I probably checked somewhere between 50-100 bodies, without any luck...
did you check their uniform or vests?
they won't be on the ground, it'll be in their actual inventory
Hmm I was afraid of that 😕
Other question then :p
Is there a way to check bags and vests on dead bodies, without actually placing them in my own inventory?
Right clicking or double clicking an item on a dead body, places that item in my inventory. Is that the only way to check what's inside?
Seem like quite a hassle to do this on each dead body...
double left click
will open up an item's "storage"
this works with guns too if you want to get attachments off of them without wanting to pick the weapon up
Ah ok 👍
Will try that next time then. Thanks 😊
I’m having the same problem, I’m on the same mission as you, and I haven’t found any evidence, despite checking well over 50 bodies
Thanks!
That's odd. I have opposite thing : 2/3 bodies I search always have intel on them, so after every mission I usually get up to 10 pieces of intel
are there any plans to update the cDLC to contain civilian classes as opposed to just having their clothes?
there are civ classes under men (african)
If you need them as a separate faction (for DRO, for example) there's a mod for it
I believe it's called "Sefrou-Ramal Civilians"
Any Rideable camel mod yet?
someone made the camels work with dbo_horses but it's messy af
attaching, detaching and remote controlling the camel itself
yeah that's what I asking, they should be a separate faction in the base addon imo
Why do you have those values in curly braces? I thought ppEffectAdjust only accepted arrays
it's different in config files
during on of the playthroughs, the convoy quest, I managed to repair and steal one of enemy APCs. However I was unable to use it at all, because I was engaged by friendy UNA vehicle and had to ditch the APC. They weren't shooting at me per se, they just got triggered by the vehicle. Is there a way to make them ignore the vehicle (or its side) or do I just have to abstain from using opfor stuff?
what about that stranded MS-3 Marid?
they shouldnt shoot at it at all if you are inside
I wasn't using any mods btw
It happened once to me as well, with a up armored technical, on coop
did you accidentally kill civvies when doing mission?
nope, clean playthrough with no minus score
apparently that UNA APC was coming towards the checkpoint to support my ass, we passed each other on the road and suddenly UNA turns its turret towards my and one-shots my vehicle
they stopped firing at me after I left the APC
On the ION VR showcase mission, a submission has you flying the DLC drone (Bustard?) and "taking photos" of a camp commander. I identified him, but was not able to take a photo. At 24 meters height and 65 meters distance at maximum zoom, it was practically a passport photo. The game did not say if I had to press a certain key. Is that intentional?
identifying him is basically the "photo" thing
the task will be completed and you get a new task assigned
(look at him and press T-key, or the key you assigned to the action. it's mentioned in the task description)
"Just... look at him, will you?" Thanks. I pressed a lot of "T" in order to activate the previous task, where you have to "identify" him. So I don't know how much more "T" pressing would help take that photo. And as mentioned, I did get ridiculously close. Guess this is another Arma feature :).
I can send you screenshots if you like.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fp2PcrRNlGo Interesting primer on what's going on IRL
how do I save my progress in extraction
Believe it or not but there isn't a saving mechanic implemented for extraction for COOP MP
Imagine Oldman without being able to save your progress 😉 You need to take a complete day off from work not to mention that all your coop buddies would also need to do the same...
iirc someone was able to save using m3mory mod, and had no issues with loading the game at all
you can save in sp
old man is also only sp and not coop.
wot da fak man
why the UN called UNA?
to avoid any potential legal issue I would say
right i had a feeling it would be that
but i'm curious why it would be ok for the US military?
iran changed to csat and greece changed to AAF, but usa stays the same
and also the actual UN was included in A2OA
Things were different back then, also the US military has no qualms with this sort of thing outside of the use of specific unit insignias.
The UN on the other hand sees itself as a global peace keeping force and similar to the red cross, has been making noise more recently about its depictions in gaming.
ah so that's how it is, thanks for the info
You dont want to see a bunch of UN peacekeepers mortaring the whole village.
And some people may gonna make a fake video of UN killing civilians type of fake news.
csat is more a group like nato, it's not a single nation.
yes, but during the pre-Alpha phase of ArmA 3's development, CSAT was directly based on the real-world Iranian Armed Forces.
Prealpha is non canon now
exactly and thats why i said this
Lack of Russian stuff in this game is... ugh.
You mean stuff that is vanilla?
Is there any way to fast forward the time for the Extraction mission?
Like, deploy imn day after RTB-ing or sleeping
Sleep twice ig
Try sleeping, then driving off camp and getting back again
If doesn't work, then no idea
Where to sleep?
Just go into camp, when you are between Arsenal and Command Tent it should active trigger to sleep
That works only if you have returned after leaving camp, as far as I know
leaving camp as in finishing each task?
Because the CSAT forces depicted in the base altis-stratis conflict are most Iranian
So, are secondary objectives supposed to pop up during Extraction? We ran about the desert for an hour, killed some patrols, got 10% intel and nothing really happened...
Hmm, we were playing co-op. Mission in theory worked, we would get information about nearby enemy patrols and if one or two guys in that patrol had an intel we'd be able to push the intel by 1% (or 0%) but nothing else
and it was like, 4 patrols over that hour of flying around the map
weird and weird
The patrols are just random enemies walking around the map
You just RTB and go on to the next mission/day
then we didn't find a way to make it another day? there's only arsenal and the intel table
Wait? is this scenario multiplayer?
Yes, it's meant to be played in coop
you have a main task that needs to be completed. once that is done you return to the fob and get a new task.
Hmm, that main task is then going to the desert, fighting 4 men fireteams, get 2-3% intel boost and do it until you get 100%? Because that's how it behaved for 90 minutes before we decided something must be broken
every time you return from a main task the day should progress to next one
and you get another task
when you go out to do that task you might get optional tasks to do along with it
@tall ivy
I think you are doing something not quite intended at the moment
yeah, definetely something got broken then
mission started, we had a "gather inteligence" task. "operations/contracts" was empty
- we watched the video
- we got armed in the arsenal
- we got into cars and started hitting the towns
- "loadout saved"
- we tried hitting nearby villages and talk to the civies, arma 2 style, to no avail.
- Eventually we noticed the smoke plume in the airport area so moved into investigate. "Enemy has patrols in the area, keep low profile" message was played so we assumed we're doing what we're supposed to. Somebody attacked us, turned out to be 2 lone guys, but the Airport was empty sans some burning tyres. So we got back to the base with a single cell phone found.
- 1% intel
So we continued doing what we did, this time in a little bird. For next hour we ran into 4 or so 4 men patrols, returning with each piece of intel, once into a lone guy on an oasis with no intel. When we got to 10% and nothing happened I assumed mission is borked
Well. I'll check the sp version to see how it's different
Is it me or is the ION Weapon system course's are dam near impossible (Especially the Rifleman one)
When it first released i got something arma'd in the uav course, but all shooting courses were ok
Oh wait no, it was the rescue hostage course that got arma'd - extraction helicopter would fly away and end trigger would not launch. Other than that I didn't notice any problems
it's you. i finished all of them multiple times :p
Welp
Git gud I guess.
The rifleman one was really damn fun 😄
do I have to complete tasks in order to advance time?
Complete main tasks and RTB, yes
ah okay
Few more tries and still no go. Anyone got Extraction co-op working on a Linux dedi?
ws keeps crashing me everytime i try to load it
if i try to like make a new modlist it doesnt work
it only works with two modlists
does it work without mods?
let me test that out
it works without mods
but i tried it out with mods that previously worked alongside it
and it doesnt work anymore
and it does work
but it crashes me the same way if try to like
load up a mission
then it's your mods fault
but western sahara works on a modlist
with over 100 mods
and i use the same mods when i make new modlists btw
not WS' problem I'm afraid! 🙃
damn
you need to figure out what mod is crashing the game
Which is pretty hard job
man i loaded 15 mods and it still wouldnt load
and it was literally just rhs and enhanced movement along side stuff for direct action
so idk
Why not try no Mods?
need to reduce mod count by half till it stops crashing. fastest way to figure out what the cause is
still, curious how a mod crashes the game with ws, though.
i can't imagine any critical part in our files
already did
worked
but crashed while trying to load missions
might have a mission that's using a file you don't have in your game, I think I had something like this before.
i tried to load extraction
Arma generates a .rpt log file each time it's run, which contains a lot of information like the loaded mods, or any errors that appear, this log file can be very useful for troubleshooting problems.
To get to your RPT files press Windows+R and enter %localappdata%/Arma 3
Additionally see the wiki page for more info: https://community.bistudio.com/wiki/Crash_Files
To share an rpt log here, please use a website like https://sqfbin.com/ to upload the full log, that way the people helping you can take a look at it and try to figure out the problem you're having together with you.
Note: RPT logs can hold personal information relevant to your system, the game or others.
gotcha
Is there much of a multiplayer/pvp scene yet? Did they add support for WS to CTI or KotH?
what cdlc is this youre referring to?
Western Sahara
has there been any recent updates for this

Use this in initPlayerLocal.sqf for desert look.

hi
Thank you.
The option to disarm the mines doesn't show sometimes even with both the mine detector and toolkits on your backpack and using the default team leader
Pegasus can get broken and won't take the next orders. REPRO: Tell Pegasus to LAND, board it with just the team leader and tell it to RTB. It will just stay there, the LZ marker does not disappear and it won't take future commands like loiter o LAND somewhere else. Additionally sometimes the pilot dies on landing but it is quickly replaced (but the body of the original pilot remains in the ground were it was supposed to LAND).
LEXX you need to make it so that new orders for Pegasus delete the previous one so it always obeys the most recent order.
Ok so why isn't the team leader an explosives expert?
What happens if you run out of cash and can't hire a contractor to dissarm the mines? I just teamswitched to a demo expert contractor and was able to dissarm the mines no problem...
last time i checked, anyone was able to demine.
first identify the mine, then the disarm option shows up.
Just shoot the mines since they're all APERS
Identifying was what was not working, once I teamswitched and then teamswitched back, the Ai was able to identify them and therefore I was able to defuse them.
But the fist time I went to the mission alone by Heli Jump and I wasn't able to identify even one... even thou the mine detector was sounding super fast and I was prone, looking everywhere on the ground for like 20 min
Also I am getting crashes quite often. The last one was when I successfully delivered the NATO AID, the UNA guys there disappeared and a second later I crashed.
Making units disappear in front of the player can be immersion breaking too 😉
No mods, not even CBA, and playing in SP by the way
I seems that the autosave caused the crash... 0X0000006 STATUS_IN_PAGE_ERROR
Another issue: If you leave your team mates at your base and go do a mission solo, if you teamswitch to your Ai units at your base and back to you the team leader it re-loads all the assets and enemies there, effectively spawning right in front of the team leader doing the mission.
So the script that is populating these locations (this was in Tazzarine) needs to only consider the location suitable for a re-population if it was left without playable/switchable units rather than a real player
You need to manually identify the mines with T
but honestly, I just bring the demining eddie
and drive it around
as it can run over the mines without taking damage
and has a 50m mine detector
that automatically spots the mines
and can use the shotgun to blow up the AT mines
Mortar the whole village to clear those mines (and the village)
There's few bouncy ones there too
Bounding mines are toxic to disarm
any chance you used teamswitch?
and AT ones I think, alongside a few wires
Can only disarm them if you have EOD trait I think because it gives you decreased chance to trip, otherwise it's distance-perfect to disarm
Yes, constantly.
maybe #production_releases is the place for this 🙂 still congrats!
i was looking in my DLCs and i couldnt find the Sahara Scenario or equipment
is this a bug?
did you laucnh the game with the dlc enabled?
i mean im going to my DLC im clicking load mod but then whenever it starts up i just doesnt allow me to open the game even tho its in game
yeah but my computer is being so weird
yeah i did but for some reason when i click play it seemed to launch and it is but i cant pull up the screen without it going down again
idk why but i guess it was just a small bug its fixed now thankfully
sorry about that man i appreciate the help
Just to say thank you for this great cDLC 🙂 I'm loving it
Anybody know where the weapon caches are on Meharrize?
Randomize
That's a shame
look out for trucks
anyone down to play this dlc
see below - and say which DLC 😉
Are you looking to play with people?
pick one channel:
#looking_for_game to tell others you want to play
#looking_for_unit to tell others you are looking for a group
#communities_arma3 to browse through advertised groups
Note: Please follow the templates in those channels (if applicable), and don't use them for discussions.
bro what are you talking about this is the western sahara chat
what else would i be talking about
mb about that, I thought I was in #general_chat_arma! 🙃
but the #looking_for_game channel is the place to be 🙂
ok
Is there a way to save progress when playing CO-OP in Extraction? We can't finish it completely in just a single play session
Persistant dedicated server
Or make your homie hosting have their PC on all night 😂
are there any official servers for last stand, king of the dunes or extraction?
pretty sure there are if you look at the server browser
hello who wants to play dm me 🙂
Good
Lots of action/players then?
a bit dusty (heh) but people still play it
Still? It's like brand new 😄
well, CDLC servers sadly lose their players quite early in the past. Except for sog, which is still quite active with mike force. Apart from that, it's very empty. Stuff like SOG king of the hill, csla servers or gm servers are difficult to find
one of the biggest reason i believe was unable to edit or set up admin in the Zeus server
*changing parameters
official servers were quite populated at launch but losing player steadily, some people still using the CDLC on their own server (unofficial)
we designed most of our mp scenarios with a low playerbase in mind. the scenarios can either be played solo, or with a small group of friends.
WS Zeus servers lost popularity at start, due to not having admin voting enabled, which was putting people into difficult situation with no parameters being changeable
Now it's a bit more active, but we will see in future, if it keeps rising, stagnates or dropes
Extraction is still fun though, with it's a bit dynamic mission generation
extraction was the PvP mode?
I just tried the one co-op scenario and of course playing around in the editor
but PvP is still on my todo list
King of the Dunes is the PvP mode
also interesting, in trailer when showing survival mode it shows SFIA soldiers instead of UNA
hmm that's something different... is it from community?
have you seen the trailer for this CDLC, King of The dunes is in there
@old nightso bad memory from my part. Store page says King of the Dunes is the PvP one, I thought it was one of the smaller ops
but there's a bunch of co-op for smaller groups
In the Extract scenario, how do I submit intel that I gathered?
in the camp's tent
a rare sight seeing lou in here
Am I supposed to do something specific in the tent? I spent, like, 10 minutes looking at every little detail in the tent that I spawned in for any way to submit the intel.
Including the "Gathered Intel" counter hovering over the table
there should be prompt to giving intel near the tent
iirc, it is a hold action, hold space perhaps
No dice for me. Tried going in & around the tent while scrolling my scroll wheel in search of the action in an action menu, but nothing. Tried holding space, nothing.
Don't have any mods. I have a file, a top secret file, and 2 new mobile phones in my vest
well you can skip the day and try to submit intel the next day
sometimes after the timeskip the intel you gather will automatically submitted to the tent.
That might be it. But if that's the case, wouldn't the intel that I have on me disappear from my inventory?
yeah there is this one time when i play with my mates we still have around 60% of intel gathered and then before last mission our intel jump to 90%
if there is no hold action for you if you aproach command tent.. then you have no intel in your inventory or you are not in correct tent ?
there is no such feature as automatic collecting of intel...
Experience may vary
then probably someone of your team put intel on table and you didnt notice.. or some intel reward from side task was recieved which is not instant
uh nope, we hop out from the pegasus and then time skip, and intel automatically added
well its arma sometimes stuff happens
I had intel in my inventory and it was the right tent - the one with the video feed and laptop to get more contractors. It seems to be a bug because restarting the scenario fixed it
It’s working fine after restart
Perhaps to some it may sound like a random comment from a random guy (which I eventually am). However my message is sincere, and I really want to tell you that I am happy with your work. I think I've proven it by convincing 3 other friends and a family member to buy it 😄 . I don't know if you are often complimented. If you are, then I would like to join those who thank you. The quality of the map and 'revisits', and more generally of the content, is amazing and this is truly a work on par with Vanilla. I also enjoyed other expansions, DLC, but I must say that this is certainly my favorite. "The map is too small" a friend tells me. Yet, repeating myself, and taking that as an example, the alleged flaws disappear in the face of so much work well done. A huge thank you therefore!
NGL, the map is my favorite part. I really want to make a massive armored battle on it.
Sounds like BF3 Bandar Desert Arma 3: Armored Kill - Sefrou-Ramal.
Pretty much, I wonder if there's a way to get a sandstorm to roll in.
Rommel Scenario
Pretty much lmao.
For this scenario, I was thinking of a small tank destroyer force going up against a much larger tank invasion.
Anyone know why the "demine area" contract isnt completing, all mines are disabled.
are you 100% sure there isn't one still hidden somewhere?
I even enabled zeus to bug check, none
level down the whole village, or back to base and skip a day then back to the mine area
Get a demining drone, hack it and fly around the objective
sometimes it's usually a mine in an inconveninent place
damn, i wish Bohemia has added Western Sahara content in a base game like they have did with Contact
But they didn't, you can't use half of the contact assets in the base game.
im wanting to play extraction with my friends, but im worried about not being able to save the game. how long does it usually take to finish?
A few hours
it should average around 3-5 hours if you're also going for side objectives
that's usually how long it seems to take on the public server
I think there's also a mod that allows saving in multiplayer
but idk how well it works with extraction, if it even works at all
but I've seen it mentioned a few times
dont forget Survival
It took me around 6 hours to finish with a buddy
Is there a mod out there that expands the weapons you can arm and attachments too like suppresors to the Ap-5 Bustard?
I added a suppresor to the lmg the Bustard carries and it took it off
sadly that's not (easily) possible due to technical limitations
True, and considering it's a rather large drone. A suppressor wouldn't do much good anyway.
Just hope the team added smaller bustard drone that support supressed gun for stealth mission
Mini Bustard for pistol when?
One time in a zeus op everybody placed down bustards and replaced the MXes with zafirs
Sounds reasonable. Thanks for the reply
Here's a middle east themed suggestion: Adding a tiny mortar to the M3 slammer, to get that proper merkava experience.
I also second the thought of handgun-armed drone.
Me and the friends really love this CDLC.
Damn, that sounds cool.
I just started playing extraction and on the very first mission, the enemy have the Kamysh APC. Is that normal? I thought we were supposed to be dealing with rebel types with technicals being the heaviest type of vehicles?
CSAT- backed rebels, right? Or are these gus the NATO-backed ones?
I mean I just started and nothing in the intel suggests that they are CSAT backed or that they have this kind of weaponry
skill issue
I mean, you can just bring Titan Compact and destroy Kamysh. SFIA has Kamyshs, and I would guess Tura got hands on them, somehow.
SFIA got their equipment from state of Argana themselves, as they are state-funded paramilitary force, and since CSAT also has North African members, wouldn't be surprised if Argana was CSAT member for some time. Either that, or they were funded by CSAT, and then vehicles got stolen by Tura.
It's just surprising and shows some poor mission design from the devs. I almost thought it was a bug with wrong unit types spawning in because of the total lack of context on it's presence.
It's akin to a zeus asking players to attack a town of infantry and then surprising everyone with an armored platoon defending the AO. At the very least one of the default loadouts on your team should be an AT loadout. The briefing should also mention what to possibly expect in terms of enemy composition and disposition.
Yeah I get there's an arsenal at base but if you the goal was for players to load up their do-everything-and-anything loadouts then it kind of fails the whole experience from inception. It doesn't feel like ION if players are just gonna load up the most powerful assets they can grab in the arsenal. The A2:PMC expansion handled this far better than what WS is doing in this regard. The arsenal should be there to give players freedom on how to handle the mission, not to force them to grab the most powerful assets because of poor mission design.
Syndikat on Tanoa were technically CSAT backed rebels but they didn't just start rolling with CSAT armor without a good in-universe explanation.
Heck if you go over the dossiers, the Tura faction is described as tribal caravan raiders and the intel picture of them is a few guys holding AKs in front of a camel.
it's random and intentional
there is a in-universe explanation, you just haven't seen it yet.
Ok, I'll play through to find the reason but a lot of my critique still stands.
Good mission design provides players with adequate information and tools to accomplish the mission successfully. The mission provided the tools but not the information.
problem is that this isn't so easy as a lot is randomized and generated on the fly
Is the existence of the APCs mean to be a surprise? If not then it should be mentioned in the brief. The briefing could literally just say, the Tura insurgents have captured X base recently and seized several assets including Y stuff.
you simply were unlucky with random. some players don't see an apc till the very end
If it is meant to be a surprise then some simple solutions would be to provide some sort of radio warning from command when you enter within X radius of the vehicle and recommend that the player evade if not prepared to take it on. The player is then provided with an opportunity to RTB and rearm or if you wanted to get fancy, provide the players with a field re-arm via supply drop or provide a one time use type of fire support to neutralize it
If it is only meant to show up near the end, then the scripting for that is simple because you can tie the spawn of the vehicle to certain conditions like # of missions tasks accomplished
it's not meant to only show up near the end. it's random. that's really all there is to it.
Ok well then as I said, poor mission design is poor mission design.
Its been a while since my last playthrough of the mode, but doesnt the AI usually carry around enough AT stuff to take out an apc?
and even if not players can always leave and return with adequate weaponry
I dont see why players have to be fed a warning that something like an apc is nearby
you can also call in pegasus - if you position the loiter waypoint right, the helicopter will engage the apc and likely destroy it
it's a risk, but sometimes worth taking
Because it is not always the case that the player spots the APC from afar before starting the mission. On my play through I was just driving to the first task (destory AA site). I parked my vehicle behind cover and then I start hearing APC treads heading my way. At that point even if I tried to leave I would be destroyed and calling a helo to an AA site would be suicide.
dunno. i never had issues with it. usually tracked vehicles are so loud, i hear them miles away
might be the headphones, though
You can hear treaded vehicles from a mile away while driving your own vehicle? In my experience engine noises of your vehicle do a lot to drown out most sounds apart from gunfire
i'm usually on foot when getting closer to the AO :p
Yeah I parked outside the AO and about 10s after I got out and started organizing the AI, I started hearing the APC approaching.
likely spotted you then early
thing is, almost everyone plays the game different, and because of that it's really hard to balance it for everyone.
Or just a case of bad luck. Regardless this is classic poor mission design. Players should not have to rely on being lucky to be able to accomplish the mission.
well, they really don't. as stated before, you can retreat at any time.
and if you can't, then you might have maneuvered yourself into a bad position.
BTW, it could not have spotted me early because we approached from a defilade position
the only problem is for whatever reason the APC patrol path ended up driving towards our position
sounds like you got unlucky tough luck
see if you can learn from it and do better next time
I'm simply surprised that almost 10 years after A3's launch people are still making these basic mission making mistakes that is the equivalent of a Zeus dropping in a tank and letting players go in without AT
This isn't something hard to deal with. I've played through all of A3's campaigns multiple times without a problem with AI on .8 skill and accuracy on hardcore difficulty. When a custom scenario makes a mission design flaw that even BI does not it is just surprising.
Even amateur mission makers have came up with so many techniques for telling story and designing well made missions that don't throw seemingly random curveballs at the player. Hard to believe that a paid DLC is making mistakes that even pub Zeus do not.
The BTR will come to your general position after you're spotted by any enemy unit (there's a bunch of random 2 men patrol everywhere), this after the BTR spawns. If you break line of sight for long enough it'll lose track of you and will only come for you again when you're spotted. On my first playthrough I also encountered it twice in the beginning and was able to get away from it twice. I disagree with you 100%, the scenario is dynamic and drops the player in an authentic dynamic situation with little intel. You start the mission with little to no limitations as you can choose any weapon and gear from the arsenal. You can choose to go light and scout out the AO to begin or to go in heavy ready for anything. It's a dynamic mission with a live AO, not a limited scope mission with one or 2 objectives. You can't treat it like a point A to point B mission where you can almost safely assume you won't find much in the way.
It's funny you say that, as I would argue some of the official missions are very poorly designed
Some of them are poorly designed and still I have played through them just fine. I have yet to meet a BI mission that makes this basic mission design flaw.
Do I know how to deal with an APC? Yes of course.
Is it surprising that 10 years later a paid mission maker partnered with BI is still making basic mission making mistakes that amateurs on steam workshop have since figured out how to handle well? Yes, quite surprising.
authentic dynamic situation with little intel
There is nothing authentic about this situation. In fact this situation makes nearly no sense at all.
- PMCs are not deployed in this fashion. They are not sent in to fight a small standing army on the behalf of private corporations.
- Intel collection does not work this way. Intel is collected before people are deployed and wetwork is done. Also killing folks usually is the opposite of getting intel. Setting up a minimalist FOB in an area you do not know or understand that is presumably under the control of a hostile faction with unknown capability is a great recipe for disaster. If you were to send in a team of undercover personnel that is a different story but again you would not expect them to fight anyone at all unless they get comprised and have to defend themselves.
- The UNAF are a presence on the map but they also have no AT (at least none that I have seen on my initial drive through the map). The Tura should have easily overrun and taken over the entire region by the time the events of the scenario start given that they have something like the Kamysh.
- Let's assume such an operation were to take place (sure why not, we're in the Armaverse after all). ION is not equipped to fight small armies. Their typical gear is comprised of civilian / phased out military gear. The primary purpose of ION is to provide defensive capability to clients and at best take on similarly powered enemies in small limited engagements.
On the mission design side, providing a full arsenal is usually considered a noobish thing to do. I don't mind too much in this particular instance because the devs want to allow players to play how ever they want out of the box. However that is not justification to allow the devs to seemingly randomly jack up the enemy assets.
Creating a scenario in which players are encouraged to play in a meta or out of universe way is the opposite of good design principles.
Dude, who are you to tell people what mission principles in Arma 3 should be? Do you even understand the "APC presence is completely random" part in English or do you need to have this rewritten all-caps? For a situation where you can just back up, grab the AT from your base and come back to finish what you've started, you're really behaving like someone who is not even ready to play simulations due to you not understanding how missions can dynamically change, including these in real life, and you clearly have no idea of adapting.
Heh ramming speed the BTR with offroad meta ftw
you may or may not capture the BTR but that's the thrill
I haven't seen anything about mission creating in EULA so I think everybody can make their content whatever they feel like.
Just remember Arma 3 is a Sandbox, you play however you like
hehe Western Sahara is literally a giant sandbox
🏃
btw I have gone through the mission again recently and once again i have captured one of enemy APCs, and - once again - I got tapped by UNA APC because they didn't recognize me
Ironic you say that BI doesn't perform this flaw and also say you've gone through the entire arma 3 campaign, you sure you have? bingo fuel features 3 armored vehicles and your only AT weapon is an RPG-42, with a literal MBT patrolling the streets, and APCs overwatching the valley, last mission of survive features you going through what is literally random artillery shells trying to stay alive through sheer RNG, first mission of Adapt requires you to walk through an entire town of CSAT with FIA gear, another mission of Adapt sends a literal Kajman at you which can randomly snipe you if it so wills it, and the list goes on.
It is absolutely a design choice for Arma's missions to be incredibly stacked against you, so having an APC show up in a mission where you(by default) have no AT is just par for the course, as arma loves its unfair mission design to keep players' minds thinking.
…I loved it
Dude's one of those guys that gets mad at the Zeus for throwing any kind of curveball at the players. Every mission must have no chance of failure and if the players make horrific mistakes it's the Zeus' job to down the difficulty so they don't all get killed. And ofc, if the Zeus fails to do all this, he's getting his ass kicked out if the server smh
As if military operations have never been started without proper intel, or insurgent forces have no idea how to counter typical surveillance methods
As if the US of freaking A didn't spend years of a huge man hunt with thousands of boots on the ground throughout it while still gathering intel
There's 2 ways of finding about the Tura's BTR. You find intel about it, or you it finds you. Not that complicated
The UN does have AT and they have APCs of their own
It wouldn't be fun for the mission to lay out every target and every location at the beginning, the mystery of the objectives is the fun part
improvise, adapt, overcome or die trying
The ION FOB could be located far further from the AO and be more "realistic", sure. And then you'd take a stupid long amount of time to go back and forth from it
I think most importantly is Arma is gamified
it's never been a true to life simulator
Having curveballs and things that may not make sense has to be done to keep the game interesting and fun
Ofc not, Arma in its base provides an experience that feels authentic but is in no way realistic
Lexx ever shared a prototype terrain picture which has a bigger mine. You can easily imagine how bad the idea was
https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/910888197263863838/911233936418558002/107410_20190606222109_1.png
Does look cool though
i think it was 4x4km ... the mine alone
compile time of that map was super long and it made fast iterations pretty much impossible. i hated working on it.
Wonder how SOG or GM people deal with the issue
probably drugs
at the time i was still working alone on the project, and i needed to do faster progress. waiting half an hour for the map to be game-ready ate so much time.
in comparison, the current map took about 5 minutes to compile in the beginning stage (near the end it was a bit longer due to all the objects, etc)
Bigger map creators be like: Why am I here to wait? Just to suffer...?
Making terrains in Arma sounds like major pain
The current, smaller terrain is perfect as it is
But hey the desert environment also helps to reduce the time
And personally, I'd buy the cdlc even if all it had was camels, change my mind 🐪
Imagine if there's trees
if you know what you're doing, you can do lots of terrain work without checking it ingame all the time. but i also had to do lots of prototyping with the dunes, etc. and needed to see how it looks and feels in the game. (buldozer has not an accurate representation of such terrain details for various reasons)
Operation Flashpoint reference
in the end there are still things i would have liked to do different, but at some point you have to cut it
Yeah and I've played through the campaign multiple times without having many problems on any of these missions. I can give you a walk through for each of those missions if you need some help passing any SP mission.
Just to double check myself and make sure I didn't forget anything I went and replayed through Bingo Fuel again. Success on the first try, took 1hr 20min, lost 3 AI unfortunately. Never even had to load an autosave. To be honest it felt even easier than the first few times I played the campaign. The mission design literally walks you through the entire process and they feed you plenty of intel throughout the process. I can't understand how people feel this mission is hard.
The first mission of the Adapt campaign is easy if you know how to stealth. If you try to blast through everything you will have a bad time. I don't know what else to say, you can avoid all the patrols and never even have to fire a shot.
Honestly some of the other scenarios you are describing I don't even remember getting into that much trouble I can't respond to it. Just tell me the mission you are stuck on and I'll walk you through it.
For all of BI's missions the context and the briefings prepare you for all of that. You are aware you are up against CSAT and the AAF whose vehicle pool includes tanks, helicopters, etc. Between the side missions and the intel they give for free you are more than adequately prepared to take on the mission the first time. Any time there is a surprise the solution is usually right around the corner.
Are the missions hard? Yeah I remember having to use a few autosaves early to help manage the deadly AI accuracy. Did they break expectations in any way? No because they provided plenty of context and intel and the solutions to any problems they designed were always available.
That is impossible because AI have perfect PID. They either know you exist or don't know you exist there is no confusing you or the vehicle you sit in for the wrong side. The only way to force friendly AI to shoot you is if you team kill.
Did I get hit by some bad luck? Yeah it was basically a perfect storm of bad luck with me running into the Kamysh on my first time playing the mission in the first 10 minutes of me leaving the FOB.
That doesn't mean that the mission design can't be improved by some basic hint that the enemy forces have some armor or that the player should bring some AT. Every piece of documentation written up portrayed the Tura as some basic rebel force relying on small arms and technical based vehicles. Even your default standard kit offers no hint that if you don't bring AT you might be fubar-ed on your very first attempt.
I'll call out poor mission design choices where I see it. It doesn't mean that overall I think the mission is bad. It is a very well done open ended mission. I would be better if expectations management was performed better.
AI do not have perfect PID. Anything the AI spots that it's not immediately able to identify is placed on an "unknown" side. It mostly only happens at a distance, and you might think that the AI not reacting to you means they haven't seen you, when in fact they just haven't PID'd you. This was more obvious in Arma 2, but the system is still in Arma 3. Enemy AI will take longer (just a couple seconds) to PID you if you're in a vehicle configured as an enemy vehicle. As for friendly AI shooting at you, it's not supposed to happen as far as I know, but it's not impossible. Probably a bug. But
I've seen it happen somewhat more often, for some reason, in Extraction
And it's not a matter of friendly fire, because they stop shooting at you if you exit the enemy vehicle
Seen it happen with the BTR, seen it happen with the Offroads
Also if it was a case of friendly fire, your own AI in your squad would shoot at you, which they don't
And I still argue that Extraction is perfectly designed, unlike most mission that we've come to expect. Most missions I play (official or not) I've come to assume that I can move from insertion to objective without anything happening, because in most missions, nothing happens. Occasionally I find a mission where that is not the case (like Extraction) I get caught off guard, and it's my own damn fault, not the mission for not telling me to be on my guard, because I'm playing an authentic military shooter, and I should be on my guard every second I'm inside the AO.
If you start up Extraction and immediately go off driving carelessly through the open dunes expecting to be perfectly fine until you reach closer to the objective, or make Pegasus fly through the middle of the damn AO and get shot down, that's your own damn fault, not the mission's.
And I get your what you're saying too, I was a bit frustrated when I encountered the BTR at first, but I ultimately realized I was being careless because of my own expectations of how the mission would run, based on other missions
Anyway that's my opinion and you're entitled to yours. What you call bad mission design is what I call good mission design, probably because I'm tired of linear type missions that don't bring anything new or surprising where the only challenge is to survive the AI aimbot
How are you testing this? I've got a custom test scenario where an opfor vehicle pulls into view of a blufor tank. In this scenario the crew of the opfor vehicle can be either opfor or blufor depending on what I choose. Every time when the knowsAbout values hits 2.16... with an opfor crew, the tank will fire upon the opfor vehicle. Even when the knowsAbout value reaches 4, when it is a blufor crew, the tank will not open fire.
Look I'll admit that I'm sometimes a bit hyperbolic with my language. The mission overall is great and very well done. The WS DLC is probably #1/2 in the CDLC category depending on your preference of era. I do not mind having to be careful and watching out for Tura patrols as I drove around the map. The mission even does a good job of warning you when you wander nearby a Tura patrol or presence. I just found the immersion broken a bit by this seemingly random appearance of a Kamysh, especially since I encountered it 10 minutes after starting the scenario for the first time.
The expectation was that Tura was something more like Taliban and less like the Iraqi military and definitely not that they'd be packing the latest CSAT hardware. It was a mismatched enough expectation that in fact my first thought was to question whether this was a bug or not because of how odd it seemed to me. Given that it is intended I just feel with some very minor changes (either the spawning of the APC could be pushed further back a bit or some minor hint could prompt the player to pack some AT or even have it provided in one of the default kits) that this issue would be resolved entirely for me.
That's all.
I second that.
I don't know if you were playing SP or MP, but the airfield map marker in SP mention that the Tura got their hands on stolen SFIA hardware when they fell.
Honestly I don't even bring AT
If I need a launcher I just loot a body/crate
At most I bring an APDS Lynx in a truck as a stand-in for the AS-50. (Especially in the AA site mission)
- Depending on how you classify PMCs, they can be deployed in many different ways.
We have historical examples of contractor Mi-24 Gunships providing CAS for UN forces in Africa (Not unlike Pegasus).
- Team Sword is ION's "Black Ops" team. They're raiding these rebel outposts under the pretext of maintaining regional stability, but that's a front for the intel gathering actually on the whereabouts of Sully.
Officially ION is defending the mining site with (the heavily armed btw) Team Shield.
-
They got a Marshall at the checkpoint + a crate of AT weapons (that the AI don't use, but at least 1 BTR is 99% assured to spawn during checkpoint defense, so it's there for the players)
-
ION is VERY well funded and equipped. Even in A2-era their arsenal had prototype rifles, gun drones, CAS helos and heavily armored and armed SUVs. Western Sahara's ION is just an extension of that as VRANA Corp became bigger.
And even then they ARE taking on similarly powered enemies in small limited engagements, the extraction scenario happens over the course of several days.
They basically hit the Tura, grab any intel they can and dip for the next day/"contract".
So I would say you can make parralel between CTRG and ION, except the part existence of CTRG is not acknowledged by anyone
These are great points.
-
While mercenaries and PMCs (corporate mercenaries) have been used historically in various fashions, the primary role is in support of existing military forces (ION was modeled after Blackwater after all). Whenever kidnappings and hostages are involved, usually the government of the parent country is involved since there are questions of responsibility and other concerns. For the sake of the Armaverse I actually don't mind the ION's deployment in this particular scenario. Just responding to some guy who is insisting I have no understanding of how these kinds of things work and how dare I disparage this extremely authentic scenario.
-
Fair point especially if we give some leeway when it comes to the Armaverse
-
Yes scratch my original point, I finally ran into one of these in a fairly random location instead of where you'd expect them (along the MSR at well defended checkpoints)
-
That's interesting to me because I had the opposite view. ION felt like a cost cutting corp, just spending enough to get the job done. If I recall, by the time the PMC dlc came out for A2, the XM8 series rifles were already shelved because the military didn't want them due to several issues with the rifles despite it being cheaper than a M4 to produce and field. I had interpreted this as ION having cheaped out and bought hand-me downs that the military agencies did not want.
I can't speak much to the AA-12 as it doesn't see much usage in military contexts but it is priced as a premium automatic shotgun on the civilian market. This seems like one of the exceptions if it is standard ION gear as only one fairly story unique character has it equipped.
The ION helo in A2 was a Russian model. I did not exactly consider the helo to be a premium buy over a comparable US variant.
For the rest (drones, SUVs), I just saw them as civ modded variants that PMCs have access to instead of the actual military variant. Nothing specific on quality and price there.
My take away, at least from the A2 days was that ION was a get what you can kind of corp. Definitely not comparable to CTRG and special forces. Somewhere between civilian and basic Army.
I mean even the operators they recruited were from standard infantry forces and not ex-SOF.
-
That's what they are doing officially. The rescue of Michael Sully is done behind the scenes, contracted by an employer interested in the damning information he has (Most likely CSAT).
-
Without getting into the politics of the XM8 adoption, I'll just say that the problems were greatly exaggerated, and the H&K project manager is of the opinion the USMC could've had M27 capabilities 8 years earlier. It's also more expensive than the M4, it was cheaper and lighter in the context it already came with certain attachments built in.
The Ka-60 was also a prototype helicopter at the time, and ION was getting them armed with rocket pods for CAS.
While not fully standarnized as some of the more common guys were still rocking FAL and M4s, A2-era ION was rocking some pretty novel and/or state of the art gear at the time.
A3-ION is even more heavily armed with acess to Marshalls and up-armored KA-60s with guided rockets.
ION also contracts from all sorts of background and nations. While most of the characters we know the background of were from regular (but high quality and experienced) units, Reynolds was a CIA field operative with special operations experience for example.
Thanks to VRANA their rich owner
Everything I've seen and read about the XM8 was that it was supposed to be cheaper than the M4 platform (it was even a design goal for the whole project) so if you have any sources I'd be happy to see them. Half the rifle was plastic which helped reduce prices but also contributed to various problems it faced.
Regardless, a prototype rifle that no military wants to buy (due to real or perceived problems) is not going to go for a premium price on any market. At that point the company just needs to dump whatever stock it has left so it can move onto other things. This is basically the definition of a fire sale.
I would also note that prototype does not = good. Most prototypes never become adopted for various reasons. Reliability is a problem with a lot of prototypes which leads them to never being adopted by mainstream (XM8 is a good poster child for this type of thing). Gear commands a higher price on civilian markets when they are what actual military uses and especially if its been for some time as a proof of reliability (just look at eotech vs holosun).
The KA-60 was an interesting choice because it either showed the lack of willingness by ION to buy American or lack of capability to do so. I'm not surprised by that since it would make total sense that Boeing/Bell/Sikorsky would never sell a top of the line next-gen prototype helo to a PMC because it would probably endanger their billion dollar military contracts. When it comes to military aircraft if you want the best you buy American. ION for whatever reason chose not to do so.
or maybe the devs picked the helicopter because they had nothing else around that would fit and look nice 😄
The rifle itself was more expensive, it was cheaper as a system when you add in the cost and weight of things like red dot/acog sights, lasers, etc that came built into the XM8.
The rifle had no real problems, it was essentially a product improved G36 made to US specifications. The overheating was exaggerated (especially as it was result of an endurance test where they were going to overheat it anyway), it's rejection was mostly a political decision (A single foreign company replacing most of US military arsenal was not something that was taken very well at the time). The 2007 testing showed that the XM8 was actually VERY reliable, even more than the HK416 (which would become the M27) and SCAR.
The Malasyan PASKAL also did adopt the XM8.
Reynolds is the exception as it's not unusual to have at least one heavy hitter leading teams. The majority of the rank and file come from well regarded infantry units but clearly not SOF. The point still stands that ION is not on par with SOF/CTRG/etc.
Which is why Jim Schatz (The H&K project manager) mentioned that the USMC could've gotten M27 (Which is essentially the G36 system in an AR body) capabilities 8 years earlier with the XM8.
