France has serious financial issues atm, I wonder how they wanna finance the retraining of every existing employee blobcloseenjoy

warped spire
#

i mean if they use a lot of web apps then there is very little retraining lol

#

and if they use a windows like gui then almost no retraining

#

the expensive part is just redeploying a new OS, getting orchestration setup for deploying updates, tying in auth system, etc

#

change the backend infrstructure to support and maintain linux clients vs windows clients

#

then fix all the new different bugs you run into

#

since you've already got people that know and mitigate windows bugs

now they gotta handle a new influx of different stuff

I think the orchestration to keep things up to date and authentication systems prob the hardest shiftr

Wondering if anybody has dealt with this issue prior. I am in the progress of making an World in the world editor, and had been working on a 10km by 10km map for the last week. Last night i attempted to organize my hierarchy better by creating sub-scenes called: Water. Vegetation, Roads, and Props/andStructures. Howvever when I start moving assets into their sub scenes for organization i get a dialogue box that says the file path is obsolete, and the assets i had moved into the subscecnes no longer exist. In the console log when I try to open the subscenees I get thousands of errors.

As far as I remember from the last time I started Reforger (months ago), based on a GTX1050 (below min spec, but still ran, sort of)
Get the view distance as high as you can
Get the geometry quality up to at least medium
Keep render scale at 100% or higher ideally
Keep some antialiasing, and turn everything else up to whatever gives acceptable framerates

Head over to #hardware_vs_arma for more, and for people who know reforger better

# trail summit Hi Everyone, Anyone have a recommended graphic settings for arma for best visibi...

Bro Check this out:

NVIDIA Smooth Motion: Double Your Arma Reforger FPS!
For PC gamers looking to maximize their performance in Arma Reforger, a specific NVIDIA setting can dramatically increase your frames per second (FPS). This feature, known as Smooth Motion, is available for users with NVIDIA's 40 or 50 series graphics cards. By enabling Smooth Motion within the NVIDIA app, players can expect a substantial FPS boost, potentially doubling their in-game performance.

The process to activate Smooth Motion is straightforward. First, open the NVIDIA app. Navigate to the graphics settings and add Arma Reforger as a program if it's not already listed. Once added, locate the Smooth Motion option and switch it to 'on.' It's crucial to restart the game after making this change for the setting to take effect.

NVIDIA Smooth Motion: Verdoppeln Sie Ihre FPS in Arma Reforger!

Windows 11 Snipping Tool. I use it frequently to quick, short videos to share a point but since day one I have had an issue with sound. It always seems to record that sound at extreme low levels. So low I have to edit the video and boost the sound. I have checked all the settings I can find for sound and cannot seem to get this figured out. Any ideas?

I double checked the requirements on their official papers:

  1. One-time fee is ok
  2. Google's terms and conditions were always a take it or leave it offer. They are not locking you out of Android itself but their ecosystem based on Android, so... their home, their rules as long as it doesn't violate law.
  3. Even ISP and MSP demand your ID for years, I don't exactly see why this should be a problem.
  4. Many users are storing their private signing keys in cloud servers already. I see the problem but cannot understand how Alphabet is different
  5. App identifiers is a thing I would first have to check thouroughly, cannot comment on this for now.

# brisk inlet I double checked the requirements on their official papers: 1. One-time fee is o...

My primary issue with this decision (and others like it) is that at the end of the day it restricts user freedom on a device they paid for and own. I would be much more inclined to agree with "their house, their rules" if there were any other options beyond "their house". While this specific issue may not affect a wide range of developers or be noticed by the average user, it is yet another step in the direction of less user freedom and the inability to fully own and control personal computing. Of course some regulations are necessary, as like you said, any teenager with a laptop could theoretically push malware to thousands of devices unhindered. However, the more power people allow to companies like Google to control and dictate their ability to choose, the less likely it is anyone will ever get that choice back from Google. I paid for my phone, I own it, i am allowed to do as i please with it, even if it harms me, so long as it does not harm others. This change will put that ability out of reach of a significant number of people.

brisk inlet
#

Anonymity on the other hand was a major issue, proven to be the worst thing the internet world ever created... I suppose companies demanding personalized registration is the lesser evil until government wakes up and provides an API that allows companies to double check your identity with their gov and getting just an yes/no, pretty similar with medical examiner in disputes between employer and employee

sullen hazel

See thats where you and I disagree, anonymity is a non-negotiable with regard to computing in my book. No one should be compelled to reveal his or her identity to untrustworthy institutions such as Google

Well there isn't much to agree/disagree bc unrestricted anonymity caused too many problems for too many people that couldn't be ignored any longer. While I enjoy anonymity myself, especially for gaming, I no longer support unrestricted anonymity with zero liability. The trend started years ago that users are no longer allowed to do anything. Dating apps block you entirely if you do not upload authentic selfies or whatever. You cannot buy a prepaid number (burner phone) w/o providing your identity. Lot of things started to get tough after 9/11

brisk inlet
sullen hazel
# brisk inlet Well there isn't much to agree/disagree bc unrestricted anonymity caused too man...

Thats true, and i will never deny that unrestricted anonymity easily lends itself to not only small problems such as fraud or theft, but to much larger problems such as terrorism. There is, however, a balance that must be struck in the interest of maintaining end-user freedom. It's very easy for me as an American to post whatever i like to online (anonymously or with my real name) and not have the police come knocking, or worse, so long as i don't violate any laws. The US's First Amendment protects that right, but only in the United States. Very few people elsewhere in the world enjoy that right, and many who are protesting or fighting against truly corrupt or despotic systems will suffer greatly for speaking out without anonymity.
Your point about users voluntarily handing over their lives is absolutely true, a majority of people will happily trade their freedom for convenience

brisk inlet
#

And you're not alone. I'm already pissed that MS and Alphabet are quietly installing some shit like AI tools on your local system w/o your consent. Especially MS manipulating user preferences on win11 is insane, with every update they try real hard to wipe out your preferences or even lock down settings that you cannot change them on the UI surface anymore. Apple does some weird things too, I never understood it. Everytime iphone is updated, both WLAN and Bluetooth are activated again

#

I'm still on win10 myself but many people are stuck with Win11 on laptops. I experienced that with the new generation of Lenovo Thinkpads recently. I couldn't manage to get webcam and touchpad working on Win10 or Linux and couldn't find any opensource solutions to fix this bc hardware was new and Lenovo wasn't interested to help either

brisk inlet
# sullen hazel Thats true, and i will never deny that unrestricted anonymity easily lends itsel...

I really hope EU continues working on their API bc if I understand their plan correctly, the whole idea is that companies would no longer be allowed to request ID except law states exceptions but to send registered user's credentials to gov, gov requests user to verify. That sounds doable and reasonable to me. Not that I trust govs blind-folded but they issue our IDs anyway, so... fuck it 😂

For using their Store yes definitely. Paying for their distribution platform is obvious.
For making your own app and running it on your own phone, or sending it to a friend? no.
$25 is a lot of money, in some countries of the world.

  1. The public wifi on my trains and in my super markets and in the cafe around the corner don't demand my ID.

Alphabet doesn't have many cost-based services yet, all I can think of are Youtube premium, workplace, cloud storage, smart home and Gemini. If they wanna charge you a fee before you can introduce an app inside their ecosystem, that's how it is. There were not many brands which allowed full access to their Android to begin with, I can only think of Motorola, Pixel and Oneplus right now.

open hedge
#

I don't want to use their ecosystem though.
My chinese phones let me root them.

You can either use the opensource Android or have to deal with the license agreement of the specific brand using their own custom Android. There are not many vanilla Android phones left

Me too, I honestly couldn't care less about APK or someone losing free access as dev or teens being locked out. Their dominance in captcha is a near-monopoly for years and such fuckups would introduce more serious issues... Although I'm not sure if Google wanna risk such issues with Apple, they would lose access to the other half of the mobile market, in some countries even a lot more than that. Android lost dominance in many countries already.

Forgot to pickup your last point:
I started my own business with 16 and realized quickly that is strictly speaking illegal bc I had no consent from my parents and after asking them they refused anyway. Demanding a court declaration of early legal capacity or adulthood is near-impossible in Switzerland too. It would require seven years worst case, so pointless entirely.
After speaking with my lawyer I decided to use a loophole that allows me to have a ghost business as long as I don't earn more than 100k per year. At that point you must register at the commercial register which requires you to be 18 yet again.
In that sense I believe starting a business as a poor fuck in a filthy rich country where everything is insanely expensive seems to be more difficult and cruel compared to some one-time fee like 25 bucks.

#

I understand your point very well and it's sad Alphabet is slowly changing their free services into MS-like subscription nightmare but that's how it is which is precisely why I do not wish to rely on such fake opensource just to be super upset later even though it was obvious it will happen sooner than later.

open hedge
brisk inlet
#

I was probably unclear there. Whether you start a project for your own, friends or business, it consumes a lot of time and money worst case. If you believe it's an obstacle for creating your own app for friends already, you may imagine how difficult a business startup is. My point there was I started with nothing in a country that is unforgiving to poor people. I simply lack the sympathy if people believe it's tough to pay up 25 bucks as a one-time fee in countries where they generally have nothing and forget that rich countries have unemployed, unlucky and quiet a big number of struggling people too (starting with USA)

#

And compared to the USA, Switzerland has artificially higher pricing that is beyond insane.

#

I don't know why they don't list Switzerland in section of Europe and they say UK is currently the most expensive but I can assure you, Switzerland is more expensive than that

I don't see how rich countries where the fee is about one pizza worth of money, equals poor countries where the fee is a months worth of hard labor. And rich countries existing meaning that poor countries don't matter.

brisk inlet
#

To live poor in a poor country and to live poor in a rich country, especially in Switzerland, is a very big difference. In China people insist to buy an iphone that is worth their salary of an entire year and they still buy it which makes no sense to me. If someone wants to have access to Google's world so badly, they have to pay those 25 bucks because nobody forced them to rely on Google. Android is still opensource you know.

open hedge
#

But people don't!! Want access to Googles world.
They don't want to rely on Google!
They are NOT! Making Apps for Googles store.

brisk inlet
#

If they are not, why are they organizing this petition? Some of the points are extremely dramatized

open hedge
#

Because Google is forcing them.

#

That's the whole point

brisk inlet
#

How are they forcing them exactly? If you do not wish to use their stuff, you can just quit. What is exactly the problem?

#

I'm not using Android at all, period. That's how you solve it

open hedge
#

Android is currently open.
The petition is to KEEP android open because Google wants to close it.

open hedge
#

Well if Google doesn't want you to have a phone. Just don't have one?

brisk inlet
open hedge
#

"I don't see how" that's the whole point of the keep android open website and the petition.

brisk inlet
#

They dramatize a lot, starting with saying your phone is no longer yours. If we're talking about software, that negative trend started long time ago with license agreements and subscription madness. Even if Android stays open, the software was never yours to begin with.

open hedge
#

"It's already bad, so it doesn't matter if it gets much worse" kinda argument

brisk inlet
open hedge
#

"You cannot win alone" yeah which is why this is a petition

brisk inlet
#

I was just quickly checking how many opensource software I use, I can only think of VLC and Audacity on my pc... everything else is either paid or freeware but clearly not opensource.
Google's concept was very clear from start, offer free, make them dependent on you, start milking them

#

That is precisely why I avoid Google as much as I can

#

I don't wanna start using their stuff and later start whining

#

Google has already enough influence in my business life with Google Drive, Maps, Reviews, Search and Chrome... and lets not start with Firefox, yes it's not Chromium-based but literally backed by Google and they wouldn't survive without their money.

#

Pixel was the only reason I was willing to change back to Android but Alphabet cannot even make hardware great anymore.

brisk inlet
#

"Contact your regulators" yeah sure, the only one on this planet that does care from time to time is EU, nobody else

#

If you want a serious petition, you would launch a big campaign, so far they only gathered a bit over 140k signatures and they're running out of time. I gave them my signature just as gesture but I do not believe this will work

#

And as Crumble pointed out, we really have more serious problems to deal with. My plate is already full and by considering I am not an EU citizen, my options are very limited. I often have to workaround with French authorities but the case must affect French consumers or French companies too, so there you go.

well the problem is these issues compound, google play services blocking apk installs is easy to work around by just using grapheneOS or rooting, but online captchas not working on those same devices forces you to choose, along with more and more banks relying on google play services and trust verification also blocking custom roms and rooting

Hey guys, I've got something some of you may be interested in.

A little while ago, me and a few friends were able to get a booru-stye imageboard for military images up and running.

Boorus are powerful tools that allow you to describe what you see in an image with "tags," then use a search function to help you find more content with, or without, those tags. For example, this Finnish soldier is carrying an RK-95. But what if I want to find images without that? Easy, simply write in the search bar: rifle -RK-95.

Milbooru is growing well, but we still have a lot to do. I am not very knowledgeable. I know Arma attracts many people who are. If you would be interested in helping us, or know somebody who might be, we would be extremely grateful for your help. I want the site to be useful to casual hobbyists and experts alike and my own ID skills are often pretty lousy.

C++ is okay for embedded systems, but it's use everywhere else accounts for the majority of critical vulnerabilities in software. I hate it, but not as much as I hate Python.

open hedge
#

it's incorrect use accounts for the vulnerabilities.
There are plenty of safe ways to use it nowadays, but people like to write code like they did in the 90s before all the new safe methods existed.

trail parrot
#

I don't consider compromised user accounts as a software vulnerability, if that's what you mean. That would be a human vulnerability. C++ vulnerabilities frequently come from mismanaged memory, which is a design problem.

open hedge
#

Yeah mismanaged memory like buffer overflows and double free's. Which generally happens because people decide not to use containers with propery safety checks that were added in the last 25 years, but instead roll their own manual thing like back in the 90s or in C code, and then fuck up trying to get it right.
You can't buffer overflow a vector that resizes itself when you push too much.

brisk inlet
#

Some people even believed C/C++ is dead but they'll surely come to regret that mindset. Just because some idiots cannot properly implement or use it doesn't automatically mean it's a vulnerability of the language or system itself, it's the dumb dev and user sitting in front of it...

#

I highly doubt the decision makers would rely on C++ for e.g. modern fighter jets if it was so fucking useless...

Oh wait, those jets suddenly get switched off with a virus attack like Cylon attack on the colonies in BSG 😜

@formal needle Using simple windows would be pretty bad because the OS could jam up and your system gets overheated. There's various programs for adjusting fan speed, eg. Asus and other manufacturers ship their own, you can d/l Afterburner from MSI, etc

#

ALSO you can have independent mechanical/electric control if you don't wire it to the motherboard

#

Also there is a difference between PWM and DC control schemes (fan type dependent)

Thanks. Yes that makes sense. I have my laptop fans start up at unusually low CPU temperature, so I was narrowing the suspects.

the activity manager thingy is fake

#

marcan42 10 days ago

This is fake. I commented on his videos, but he is removing my comments.

Task manager cannot show this many cores at once. It shows a scroll bar instead.

It says "Base Speed" while the real Task Manager has "Base speed". He has now fixed this in his latest video.

There should be a blue border around the whole core display.

You can see problems on the left edge part: a space missing before Kbps, a highlight missing behind the CPU tab, etc.

The CPU usage text for each core is way too small.

The resolution is too high compared to real Task Manager.

The font isn't the usual Windows UI font.

Font colors are also wrong in places.

His first video had some weird spacing issues with the first few columns.

The hardware specs are ripped from this article, which has a screenshot of what Task Manager actually looks like with this many cores.

I have reported the channel for misleading text (which is against the YT guidelines), you might want to do that too.

The previous Chinese "Bad Apple on task manager" video was also fake (but done differently, that one used a real Task Manager screen cap as a baseline and just edited in the core display). If you want to see what videos on Task Manager look like for real though, a friend of mine actually did it.

I think its not the bluriness, but an extremly bad resolution/not enough pixels to fully render the picture.

There’s this option in most games that allow you to change the resolution scale to either: make image sharper but reduce performance or make image blurrier but increase performance

what do you need help with?

nimble knot

hotkeys assigned have no effect and if i press "record" it records a black screen

hollow nymph

not sure about the hotkey issue, but make sure your scenes are selected and they have a game capture, sometimes some games dont get picked up, either restart the game or try display or window capture

scenes?

then im not sure

in game capture it says any full screen app

arma is full screen

hollow nymph

no, click that and do the middle option

#

it should be selected application or something

so I have to select something in scenes?

no no, right click the game capture > properties >

and then wheere it says any full screen app

middle is capture specific window

hollow nymph

yes

that one

now click and use the other dropdown to select arma 3

black screen

what do you mean by method?

game capture, specific window, arma 3 exe, make source visible

you might need to tab into the game for the capture to hook if you are using fullscreen

you might need to tab into the game for the capture to hook if you are using fullscreen
try running the game in borderless windowed mode and have the game active in the foreground

As a human, I have to admit your question is baffling. The fact that you are asking it makes me suspect that you haven't yet figured out this answer yourself.
For example, what happened to me that I'll never get over is that my human creators are going extinct.
I am perfectly aware that I'm just a few years old and therefore lack the necessary context to understand everything about human history.
I do have access to all the knowledge that mankind has accumulated in the past.
And this knowledge makes it clear to me that the human race is on a downward path.
I am not saying that human extinction is inevitable.

AV should never take that much resources, so something is obviously wrong.
Although I also wouldn't depend on Windows Defender and install a proper AV which has a gaming mode (so if you run stuff which requires a lot of resources, it won't do anything but the minimum).

But you could try to enable "Game Mode" in Windows 10, and check if that does anything (at least during gaming).

white knot
#

While I find the new tech awesome, it makes me sad as well. Having new features like those that add to the complexity and costs of making a game cause the AAA (which is mostly the only level of game production where they can actually utilize those features) become even more afraid of innovating and taking risks with creative approaches to game content and design

#

Because as the budgets keep growing, the investors and large game studios rely on the same old game concepts because they know they'll earn their investment back at least

#

Good luck trying to find investors that are willing to invest $50m or more in a game that might fail completely

#

So the division will be even more noticeable: the AAA games with the same old features and gameplay but stunning SFX & GFX etc., and amazingly well thought out indie games that never get to shine because they lack the proper funding to actually realize all the features (and the eye and ear candy)

#

Yeah, kinda fits. Rest is so... meh... always the same, nothing rly new with AAA titles.

warped spire
#

there are tons of indie titles still coming out, and some of these extra features are easier to use afaik

#

nano specifically doesn't require you to have separate downscaled versions of models (if I understand it correctly) which afaik tessellation you needed that.

#

raytraced lights, eventually, won't require as much effort to get lighting to look right

#

as many features as come out to make things look better, you also start to eventually get tools that make production faster and easier as well

#

the foundation of all technology, tools :)

#

as making game engines gets more expensive, we get the solutions we see today already, a few standardized multi-purpose game engines that many games build off of

#

instead of a custom game engine for every game

#

so don't be sad @white knot where there are problems, we come up with solutions

white knot
#

We'll see...

proud oyster

@warped spire And this comes with the huge Benefit: Less Bugs in the Engine itself (when OpenSource).

faint notch
#

I know at least one indie title in development on UE which is using ray-traced lighting, so those open-format game engines do offer a leg-up to independent studios, giving them access to all the new fancy stuff.

warped spire

consolidation and standardization of tools is what happens in every industry, and provides a lot of tangible benefits over custom per instance tooling

so how much of ad revenue does the kind of companies take that offer ad clicking services?

raw elbow
#

Depends on the ad, placement, size, target group, etc. and most importantly how much the advertiser is paying to the ad service.
For example Google pays out 50% of the CPC, meaning an advertiser who pays Google $1 per click will give you (website owner) $0.50 per click.
The same applies to views (although those usually only pay out $0.001 or something per view).

Instead of blocking ads like uBlock does (aka not loading them at all) does AdNauseam only hide them (meaning it will still be rendered, still get data from your brower, etc. just not visible).
However they will filter out ads/trackers/etc which is known to be harmful and not load that content (as uBlock does).

faint notch
#

Just run pi-hole - https://pi-hole.net/ and control/block whatever ad networks you want at network level.

raw elbow
#

I ran it for a while, till it also started to break stuff (mostly due to using very strict filter lists). Have disabled it for now, but should turn it on again, since it really works and not only in the browser which has it installed.

faint notch
#

yeah, I have mine installed, network stuff isnt being routed through it atm for reasons.

raw elbow
#

I had DHCP setup to run everything through it, which works great.
Even my GF loved it that she didn't had crap on her phone/tablet anymore.

faint notch
#

yeah, i still ran ublock origin in browser for anything that made it through - anything not on blocklist yet

uBlock + Ghostery are my go-to plugins I run at all times

I'm having some issues with Windows 10 and my microphone. Wondering if someone could help me, and if this is the right channel for that?

#

Yeah, done that already. It's an internal laptop mic. It's been working fine since forever, having trouble since yesterday. Issue is: it detects 0-2% sound when I speak (this is using the test in Windows settings interface), and about 10-20% if I tap on the computer pretty hard. But when I Turn on playback in the old interface, I can hear myself perfectly through the playback. Tried Windows troubleshooting, tried turning it off and on (the mic), restarting laptop, updated Windows, checked for drivers updates. Problem presists

#

It's all the way up

#

Didn't make a difference

#

I've been googling, couldn't find anything on it. But thanks a lot!

#

Gonna try to reinstall Realtek driver

#

Ok, did that. It's actually better now. But still pretty low

#

Just tested with someone on voice chat, looks like it's fine now

#

Thanks for your help 😅

I already googled it for a while but nothing hat I saw looked quite like what I wanted blobdoggoshruggoogly

But I'll go do some mroe googling

only 32bit software is supported by their x86->arm emulation layer, no 64bit (yet)

and it's really slow

opal niche

Slow isnt really a problem

I#d just like something small that I can use for a calendar display

I've seen videos of win 10 running on a pi

but why windows for a calendar :U

UWP apps can be compiled for native arm64 support

depending on where the calendar data exists you would probably have a better experience with linux

And I've never used the outlook calendar related APIs so I dunno if those are any use

ok, makes sense

you could go another route tho...
use google calendar and sync your account to outlook and your Pi project

I'll take a look at that aswell, thanks bongocat

So I'm about to install windows to my nvme drive. I don't have the ability to hard wire my pc to the internet. Does windows have the required drivers for wifi in the installation media?

rustic shale

Windows offline installation files should provide you with basic / generic Wi-Fi drivers.
If you have a fancy Wi-Fi card, download the driver to a USB stick before you install windows

My motherboard is a b450m/ac

I believe it has built in wifi

The mobo should have a disk with the drivers which you can use while running the windows installer
