#Crashing

Okay forgive me let me go back a bit and just update my brain on what the whole issue is.
For a summary:
When entering Pikemead's Reach, her game crashes within a couple seconds. Doesn't happen anywhere else in the world, she can play for hours without issues.
Okay - and this has been happening for some time?
It's been an ongoing issue since the launch of early access
Okay - this is not a specific issue that I have come into contact with in my time in troubleshooting, specifically crashing there - which leads me to believe that something in that area is triggering something with her computer setup to cause the crash.
Last time we played, she had to play on the Steam Deck to explore the area at all.
I am guessing in that time you have verified her files, and redownloaded the game and installed it after clearing steam's download cache?
Her and my systems are nearly identical, only real difference is the GPU, and potentially other software, though I don't know how they would interfere.
And just to have this information in here - this is happening on a dedicated server, however she was able to go there in a solo game and had the crashes as well.
Didn't do a reinstallation after clearing download cache yet, that one escaped me, we'll try that
What are her system specs including GPU. I thought I saw you mention it, but can't find it
Yes, happens on dedicated and P2P when I host a game, however she has no solo saves progressed to the area
5950X, 32 GiB system memory, Radeon VII, Win 10 2H22
Well above minimum
Also, didn't you post a copy of her log somewhere? I am not seeing that either
I did
Here
Well, she did, probably why you couldn't find it in my search history
Putting it in here for ease of access.
The only thing (besides the generic "it crashed" message that I am seeing in here is that there are a lot of [graphics] Failed to allocate download buffer memory. errors, which could mean memory issues with VRAM or RAM - or honestly could be nothing.
There doesn't seem to be anything concrete that I am seeing.
Let me know how the reinstall goes and whether she is able to go in.
Also when you have a moment - what are her graphics settings at? While the computer is sitting at about recommended specs - if her graphics settings are too high, places like Pikesmead - that have a lot of buildings, a lot of different lighting and a great deal of things going on - could verywell cause her system to get overloaded and crash.
We tried all kind of different settings and it seems to make no difference
But we can certainly try visiting the city at lowest settings again
I would say try the clear download cache/reinstall first
Yeah
but as for settings, anything balanced or below should be fine
maybe performance, but it shouldn't have to be max performance
Let me know how the install goes. if she's still crashing, we can try a few more things that might help.
Will do
@quick kettle
Okay, while it's pretty normal to see a few "failed to allocate memory buffer" messages here and there - there is a giant stream of them throughout the entire log, as well as failures to allocate voxel mesh data when the available memory is large enough. This is hinting at something within the hardware having difficulty, either memory or storage capacity or something wrong in the data transfer. It could also hint at memory fragmentation.
Because it's happening only in pikemead I am still thinking it has something to do with how complex that area is.
- One possibility might be something corrupt with the driver that is installed - you can try to completely reinstall it using DDU.
- I would also see if AMD has a way to defragment the VRAM. I know NVidia has something but I am not sure AMD does. If not, I would restart her system completely after going through and turning off any programs that run on start that she doesn't need to try and keep the VRAM cleaner/clearer when running the game.
- Though I know you said you tried all manner of settings, I would also make sure all her graphics settings are all set to "performance" or below as well.
Oh, One last thing, but I would also make sure her hard drive isn't close to being full. Drives start to act very strangely when they get near full capacity, and if it's also using virtual memory, it could be attributing to the issue.
this last crash now happened in the Revelwood Hollow Halls, I should have mentioned that
hard drive still has plenty of room luckily
I'll try lowering my graphic settings again as a first thing then
Also make sure you don't have some kind of software that might be changing the settings back. I know Geforce Experience externally sets game settings, maybe AMD has something similar that is resetting them?
AMD does not have any software like that that I'm aware of
I'm also seeing a lot of the "Failed to allocate download buffer memory." in my logs, and no crashes here. Might be a general problem, or just not mean much ๐ค
