There's also some really popular genres that are just... missing tags. Like all incremental games get labeled "clickers" even though a lot of incremental games aren't clickers

Binding of Isaac style games are roguelite/roguelikes, where dying makes you reset. That's probably the kind of genre you want to avoid if you don't like that kind of gameplay. Hades and Risk of Rain are other famous examples

I think the trick to making roguelites fun is embracing the RNG as part of the skill. Well designed roguelites give you ways to play around RNG. You take advantage of it when it's good to take more risks and gain more power while you can, and you find ways to survive when you're not getting the things you need.
Bad roguelites are ones where you can't really manipulate the RNG at all and you're kinda just along for the ride. I don't like those ones.

i saw it on streaming.
The penalties are debilitating and sometimes run endingly bad.
And the more u play and progress the more items are likely to spawn with higher chances to give u these debuffs.
So it feels nigh impossible to ever start a build later on vs when jus starting
I prefer to farm the in-game currency and buy things myself because I'm not lucky anyway

When I was playing Diablo 3, I had to wait 12 seasons before I finally managed to get a staff...

Returnal has the absolute best usage of the PS5 hapticks and dynamic triggers tho

I think the genre these games are in are fanastic at making exploration feel fun, it reminds me of how the world of Dark Souls 1 is so interconnected.

Have their servers always been this bad, or is this just a recent thing? Tried 3 different hosts now and even hosting it myself and ALL of them have been slop. Even had one put in 32GB of ram for it and the server still sucked.
Is this just bad coding on their part?
What issues are you having exactly? "Slop" isn't very descriptive.
But no, not everyone is having problems, a lot of people are playing without issue.
All of the players, 3-5 at times have had issues. Sever Overload warning have been on every single server.
Nothing we have done has alleviated it, changing hosts, self-hosting, changing server physical hardware, nothing has helped.
Mobs teleporting, can't even blink/dodge roll, can't even mine half the time. Sever reseting does nothing, warning message starts again immediately.
Is it just this poorly optimized overall? I can't understand how every server we have tried, even different hosting options, has had the issue. You basically can't play the game outside of single-player.
That's not normal, no, though without seeing details about the server hosts it's hard to say why you'd be having such bad luck. Is your friend group very scattered geographically? Do you have high pings to the servers?
Ping isn't an issue, it is just the server coding for the game code it seems. None of us indirectly show poor ping, but the server constantly... like 24/7 has SEVER OVERLOADED in the bottom left, permanently. Doesn't matter how many, who, where they are connecting from. The server itself just does NOTHING but spit out error codes and issues constantly.
This has been like this for 3x major content updates for over 2 years now with multiple different server hosts. I am just confused how this can be this horridly optimized and not fixed after 2+ years. I know it is the game too, because it is multiple players, across different regions, and it has been 3 different hosting options across 3 different parts of NA... yet it is the same error set and the poor server performance loop every time.
We have even relaunched a sever multiple times in the past thinking maybe it was the server. We did a fresh start, new file, and new characters for this latest update and still the process repeats of just horrid server performance.
I have give up doing a blink build for my caster because I can't even blink. I just end up teleporting into the mob's face... makes it pretty useless play then. My buddy can't even double jump correctly most of the time.
What server hosts have you used? I mean you can say that it's just the game all you want but I'm telling you that this isn't normal lol, the majority of people hosting servers are not having constant server overloaded errors.
I have tried Nintrado sponsored servers, we have tried self-hosting local machine, and we now have a buddy trying a 3rd remote host right now.
Did you ever reach out to support for the server hosts? We obviously aren't in charge of how companies like Nintrado manage their servers, but they shouldn't really be offering server packages that get overloaded from normal use
After playing ark official for so many years I'd really recommend gpotato over nitrado if that's an option
Posted a few things to them and posted some to you all in the past with no help.
The new server is 16GB ram, 32GB storage, and 32 cores even at it...
And even at 32 cores it is just a sloggly slop of a server.
Yeah if that's what they're giving you it's very odd that you'd be getting overloaded messages, people are running servers with way worse hardware without issues. I'd also reach out to nitrado support directly, I'm not what you meant by "posting" but they have a customer support portal, from looking at their website
We use GPortal and we see the server overloaded messages all the time even with just 3 or 4 of us playing at a time. When I check the server load on the site it's still at like 4%, so I have no idea what is triggering the message.
I have the server set to 16 slots.
That is weird, but you don't notice any performance degredation?

Sometimes we get lag when it shows up, but not all the time. We haven't played on the server in a while, when we do (which will likely be 1.0) I will send logs if we see it again.
even on depot server with one person there is the overloaded messages
the shroud depot I can kinda see that being the case given that it's a server that's basically stress testing the game lol
But yeah, if people are getting constant server overloaded messages, I'd be very interested to take a look at their logs.
I am in the Hollow Halls with the rooms full of enemies. I killed every enemy but the barrier ahead doesnt open. Can someone help me?
I killed some enemies behind a door before it was opened, maybe that bugged the game out...

@pliant quarry i have hosted the game on saturday for my friend to join while i was building the library, my friend on the first connection got a error server not found and got disconnected, but than we had 0 problems till we went to bed so after 3 hours.
Try smashing vases and pots, ||sometimes they're haunted. I don't remember if they count or not, though.||

Hey, does anyone know if tamed animals will try to escape a skybase and try to unalive themselves?
I mean, I have had this error issue for about 90% of my time playing this game online. I legit just thought it was par for the course for the game.
Yeah I believed you, but no it's definitely not par for the course. At least not on appropriate hardware.
My admin just tried it on Windows even of the Linux version and it was still rough. Only time we didn't have an issue so far was for an hour when they did a direct host on their local machine using their desktop. But that is horribly unrealistic to expect someone to host a direct local machine 24/7 for a server for people to use.
He booted back to the previous version on Windows instead of Linux though and we immediately all 3 got Overload errors within 20 seconds of being in the server again.
We just gave up and went back to dealing with the overload errors for now sadly.

He tried it on the linux sever-errors, windows server-errors. Only time we didn't have any errors was him hosting on his desktop directly.
Both windows and linux were errors with in like 20-30 seconds of lanuch even too.
I sent him the info to send over the logs when he gets a chance.
I suppose you've been in server-support here before? The server needs speed (aka. GHz) more than ram and lots of cores, which explains why the desktop pc hosted one was more stable, server CPUs tend to be way slower than desktop CPUs.
Yeah some of the people in server-support know a lot more of the intricate details about optimizing servers than I do
I will say you're not the first person I've heard who had problems with Nintrado. But I've also heard their support is decently helpful if you reach out to them.
We get 'server overload' more often than I care to admit. My wife hosts our game over "friends" on Steam.
I've had a server on nitrado for about half a year, basically no issues. With update 8 something broke and I had to restore a backup, they switched the VM from a Epyc to a Xeon and now its getting sluggish and laggy with 3 people. 
Didnt bother with support yet because we're only ever 2 ppl currently, and the occasional visitor but we can handle that. When the other friends get back into the game I'm gonna have to do something about the situation tho
The issue is that the game only allows a single-threading. It is very rudimentary and outdated. Even at 3+ GHz then, with single-threading it is horribly undermanaged.
Until multi-threading is supported, it is going to be a consisten bottleneck.

My buddy has been stuck at a single core forever with the game, multi-threading isn't an option for him. Unless there is a super secret setting that we don't get access to.
Enshrouded is using an average of three cores on my system.
Because this happens automatically with the scheduler and some black magic OS side stuff I suppose.
You can clearly see how many tasks the game starts in every log you look at, be it server or client side.
And the task system seems to be doing just what it needs to be doing, because when it says its using 15 threads to compile my shaders it damn well does so. And it says exactly that in the logs too.
The game yes...... the server client... no.

Then you have a magical server client for hosting. His has been stuck at 1 core for over 2 years thru dozens of different version and updates.
Lets put it this way, the game (and server) support it, if it doesnt work then there probably some issue somewhere in the chain of game>os>vm>hardware
I know the game does.... it asbsolutely does not on server hosting though. It may says it does, but it doesn't actually. Not for all of them.

Like I said, I had no issues with the Epyc CPU VM on nitrado for half a year, capped the slots at 5 while paying for the midspec 8 slots server and we never had issues.
Now i got switched to a Xeon CPU and its starting to go down the drain with 3 ppl. Sometimes even just 2 when theres lots happening
I have no idea what the core usage looks like tho, I cant check that.
We had it happen a lot but just played through it figuring it was an optimization issue that would resolve in time.
I've heard Xeons are a bad choice for Ensh servers. That was my experience when I tried to self-host.
A self-hosting that spanked all four cores my server was allotted.
Xeons are just generally "slower" in terms of clockspeeds which would explain that, yeah
I dont have a log from the Epyc CPU VM anymore, but currently the server is running on one of these... and 2.6GHz is... well, slow:

Gliding and I tap the wall or ceiling, instant loss of all my stamina and then fall to my death.
I mean... I've run into things and dropped like a stone to my death, but it never drained all my stamina. It just stopped my glider and I hit the ground before I could open it again.
Oh I have done this too, that is just me being a dumbass. I get the difference, lol.
I call that the "Fwoosh PSSHT!" maneuver.

I believe they are. they've gotten a LOT of feedback on it.
Yeah I don't think it's something we'd never touch again, but I don't know the current status, it has been a while since I talked to the designers about them. I made sure they saw the community feedback about them, though (there was a lot).

Yeah, it's a pretty divided system. I like it. But there are definitely some improvements and additions that could be made (as made known by the past feedback).
Real talk, tho: Most major updates, i go back and make a new character on a new world to see how the game plays with the new at the time things. It's so much fun starting over every time!

Another question - I know this is also a divided topic. But, is there any conversations going on about potential rideable creatures in 1.0 and beyond?
Changing the base character model proportions would also mean changing every single outfit/armor in the game, not to mention all of the animations associated with all the weapons and such. It's not that we don't care about player feedback, we know that some players don't like the more non-human proportions our characters have, but the amount of dev time it would take to change them just... doesn't seem like it would be worth it, honestly. At the very least, it won't be happening any time soon.
Yes, we know it's a huge request among players so the design team has discussed it on more than one occasion. I can't say what the plans are yet, though.

Honestly the team kind of agrees. At least, relative to how much work they'd take to add (lots of animations, modeling, QA testing, etc.) That's part of why they haven't been added yet, other things have felt more impactful.
I don't think they'd be totally useless, but they're definitely more of like... a rule of cool thing, than something significantly game changing.

When I first bought Enshrouded it had a lot of potential but it lacked in some areas so I put it down to play Valheim some more.
I have a quick question about Enshrouded that a veteran might be able to answer.
Enshrouded has updated quite a lot and I'm wondering if the map is persistent now? When I first played I did a lot of clearing, farming and exploring then I saved and got off. The next day though I get on and I had to re-explore the map and everything I cleared away was back, a total reset of the map. My skills and builds where still there but clearing the map and exploring reset. Is this still like this?

Well, bad luck then! You'd need to make a new world, get there, deforest the root because your's won't respawn.

Every survival game does this other than enshrouded.
Just invite friends and talk to each other before doing stuff.
They've got both groups trust me.
And also, most of these other survival games doesn't feature really "important" quest objectives that'd need to respawn, like for example crafting stations that you find in the world.
Not to mention, some loot needs to be shared / quest progression is not shared by just standing next to one another and/or you need to loot a specific chest...
Guess they'll work on it, but it being their own self-made engine that improves on the flight, it'll take time.
They just need to learn from Valheim in this regard.

As Vulpine said, everything inside your flame altars will stay however you left it. Everything outside your flame altars will be renewed when reloading into the game.
You shouldn't be losing your explored content on the map, but yes outside of your home bases things respawn normally.
valheim is... amazing, but they are different games in many regards.
Its an unfair comparision that people label the two as the same, when they are simply just similar.

I want to do anything I can and it leave a lasting mark, like if I remove an entire mountain, stays gone.
I'm weird I know. I like to do things in games like Valheim or Enshourded that I can't irl.
Build massive castles and clear the surrounding area so it's a perfect circle around the castle.
Place a flame altar where you destroy that mountain and it will stay gone π
the engines aren't quite there yet, but if you give enshrouded a chance, you'll find it is very close to this level of persistence. Just gotta use the flame altars and such.
Overlap your 10 altars and you'll have a ridiculous chunk of map...
that's not weird, its pretty normal gameplay for these games
But permanent changes would require an entire overhaul of the game and its systems - so that's definitely never going to happen

but i think that it probably is an engine limitation to only be able to build squarely, like placing down the altar and only having that plane to build on at pretty much all 90 degree angles essentially
I know of a game where building plots are circular, but there's a square area around them that is "shared plot' space that then, if you cancel one plot it will remove anything in the corners of the square region. Very weird the way they decided to do that.

Is there any reason for why an altar can't be placed? I'm only 1/4 altars, its highlighted blue, it's giving me no kind of error or reason it can't be placed, but when I try to place it, I just get the 'thunk' sound and nothing happens.
edit: Solved it. Had to reload my save.
You may be too close to a non build area. If you are near Ancient structures, they have their own build radius that can't be built within. you also can't place an Altar if enemies are near by. Or, you could just have a weird bug that sometimes dosen't let you place one for.....whatever reason. If that's the case, I would suggest trying to delete it and make another one. has worked for me in the past when I couldn't put one down.

But be careful, it drains your remaining time in the Shroud upon usage.

Go basebuilding for 2hrs or do something that doesnt involve shroud diving, there is so much to do.
If you start fishing now, you might have 5 fish by the end of the curse

It can be countered...1. don't use shroud magic (lol), 2.there are gear sets,potions and skill points for increeasing shroud timers , 3. turn off curses in settings and 4. do something outside the shroud..really, what is it about humanity that says "I've been denied something, now it's the only thing I want', lol. Like not all the game is in the shroud.

It was early on so it knocked my shroud timer down pretty short and I didn't notice until I was actually in the shroud and got the timer warning to get the h*ck out
I use it all the time aswell, im just waiting for the debuff to run out^^
also, I, a very smart archer, just realised I use a puncturing gem but a shroud bow with blunt arrows...
That is interesting cause the wiki on the shroud meteor shower doesnβt mention how long that debuff lasts only that it drains your shroud timer. I assume you use this in non shroud areas.

I mean shroud damage is only effective against enemies outside the shroud anyway
It is frustrating the first time, but there is so many ways to replenish and increase the timer. I dont really see the problem to get penalized if you use the thing you want to destroy (also shroud beam is the only shroud spell worth using lol )
Then it isn't fully grown yet. Look out if there are berries visible or use the water can to check if it reached the last growing stage

How to diffenciate server quests from personnal quests now that there's no more Ambervale vs Flameborn, anyone knows?
@halcyon lantern to my knowelege its auto placing those in teh missed quests category, and unless you enable individual progression, they stay "missed" down in their own section now
so when you join a server, the quest log auto updates to "the furthest progression" and all other quests go to the missed section now for "personal progression" if you enable personal progression then all teh quests get reset to your own position, and certian items and things in ppls bases you cant "use" until you catch up

Well, so far it's only been four hours, but she's at 76%, so, minimum of five isn't an unreasonable estimate.

oh yikes, mine's usually less than half an hour. I would probably stop playing if it took me 5 hours every time
Only on occasion when the precache downloads. She got a new version of Kubuntu today, which means a new kernel, which means new video drivers, which means a shader load.
She feels hours of waiting is a good tradeoff to avoid the occasional stutter as shaders build.

If you go to my share (Gothylvania) and go to the cathedral the red line is directly behind it.

Oh I see what you mean, the "games can't have bones in China" thing. My understanding is that idea is a bit overblown, they're restricted but not outright banned. As far as I'm aware Enshrouded is the exact same in all regions at the moment.

I looked into it further and I think a lot of Steam games operate in a legal grey zone in China. We technically don't have a local publishing license (ηε· - bΔn hΓ o), and it sounds like to get one of those the game would likely have to remove things like skeletons, but the majority of Steam games don't get that license and Steam operates relatively normally within China despite that.
I guess a lot of foreign games are technically illegal, but not practically illegal, the government doesn't enforce those laws much

It's complicated. Bones/death have big cultural implications in China, and there have been cases where some games have had to remove/censor some of the death/violence in their games in order to publish them in China, like removing skeletons scattered around the game world. This generally only happens with really big games from big publishers, though.

Wednesday i was basically okay, yesterday i wake up and i could not walk, also today.. Tuesday i have the appointment with the doctor to check the results of my MRI
I've had issues with mine for years on and off. I constantly get pins and needles down the outside of my left leg, one toe is completely numb.
Dumb pains all over that all come from the back. Only fix is cortisone injection or surgery, and I'm not having either.

Yeah, I ain't doing it. Too many people end up with more problems than they went in with. And a cortisone injection only masks the pain for a few months which can lead to doing more harm. I'll just deal with it day by day.

I get that, but how does that work for things like walls/floors from the preset? I understand that it is still player created, and I don't know anything about game design, but I would think that they would "recognize" the preset buildings, in some way, right? I might be totally off though.
Because I build a yak house, with just walls and floors, their beds and the feeder. They get stuck on the walls.. on their feeder, their beds. There is plenty of space for them, but it is just.. hmpf. It is so much worse with them than with other animals. Probably because of their size, but it impossible to keep them productive, because I have to reset them every 5 minutes.
Pathfinding in games in general is one of those things that sounds simple on paper but is extremely difficult to get right, especially in worlds where you can't define preset paths like ours. Mostly because the NPCs don't "know" or "recognize" anything, like you said. It's just code that tries to mimic the movements of living things. So as you introduce things like randomness (which makes the movement feel more convincing), you run into a lot of edge case issues that are extremely difficult to test for or avoid, like when the stars align and random movements just happen to get the NPC stuck inside a prop, or a wall, or whatever.

Surprised the dev team didn't just opt for player set pathing to be honest, since the NPCs serve no other active functions than menus
Elder scrolls online did this with their NPCs - the player manually sets the nodes the NPC will travel along to create a path

Hey Toast, while we''re on the subject of NPC/pets movements. I thought about the issue and considering the amount of props creative players will use to add clutter in order to make their bases more "lively", it's going to be very hard to avoid them being stuck in piles of bags or similar constructions.
What about some way to restrict their movement to "safe" zones? This could be achieved by "painting" "no-trespass" lines on the floor using either the summoning staff or a new item, in a similar way we can "paint" vegetation or "decay" on voxels. Those lines would only be visible when the tool is selected and the pathfinding would consider them as solid obstacles and not try to path through. This would allow players to
- Prevent NPCs/animals from approaching dangerously cluttered areas
- Stop their pets from leaving their home whithout having to close the door each time
- Stop wandering NPCs from entering their home
- Make sure a crafter NPC is always in his home without reducing it's radius to the bare minimum (some NPCs love to move outside their house to hide in some decorative bushes because their (presumably) circular walk radius includes a few voxels outside the building.
- Depending how the pathfinding works it might even improve performances by reducing the size of the area searched by the algorithm.
Also a workaround to them being stuck all the time might be to teleport them to their assigned bed if they can't reach it in time at night (this would only work for NPCs thought, not animals who don't have an assigned place and can sleep anywhere). At least they wouldn't stay stuck indefinitely.
I just have open grass for animals and a "shed". Or just an open barn and always had trouble with that lol

My wife just had to dig a rabbit out of the ground. He's been there for weeks. She finally dug down far enough to get it. Flooded our field having to take walls out of the rice paddy.

And our dogs always go under a certain set of stairs, plant their noses at the base, and sit there griping about how they can't reach the food that is literally 15 feet behind them in the opening of the stairs

Is there a bug involving the Yellow tall bottle that givews+4 minutes in the shroud? I don't gret a bonus and the gui says 44 minutes remain of in the shroud time...Which doesn't happen.
You have to take it when not in the shroud.

Try asking in #server-support you might get better help in there.
ctrl+f in the server-support channel for similar results are mostly left unanswered so seems its pointless to try
It's community run, so if no ones around π€· but the people in there that do offer help are usually pretty good whit that kinda stuff, if you can get hold of one.

I never found it a waste of skill points. I used it all the time, it literally makes you glide higher. It's stupid now though, it just slows down exploration SO much. Now I have to glide, land, and wait for my meter to fill before I can glide again. We already had stamina to contend with

That's fair. It's not for everyone. There's definitely a certain amount of cartoonish horror that goes with those games. Like I'm not looking forward to whatever giant fish is gonna be in the pond in the next update.

reminds me of this one roguelike where you play convicts in space and I finally had a good one i like and a nice run on easy and then I got ate by a space whale i didnt notice on the map and went NOPE and havent played since.
Alright so in voidtrain there's this flying shark thing that will eat things and mutate as you travel along the tracks. One of them is a tongue and it will pull you off the train and attempt to maul you.
I quit because of it.

Most discords I've been in that are for commercial things either don't allow outside stuff or they allow people who boost the server to use stuff like that, which makes sense to me
I've seen other discs attach image and emoji perms to an exp level so you have to chat for a certain amount of time before you can use them.
i dont recall that being a limit even before I became a helper, but ive been a helper longer than ive had nitro.
