Yeahhhhh. Not to say they’re all bad. If its some sort of simulation/sandbox game it makes a lot of sense. Especially for a game like Vintage Story, Minecraft, etc.

there have been some modpacks that also have mods that do very complicated generation and structure generation including stuff that builds "structures of structures" (think like how villages work)
and you can have that part work and even a story/progression IF you dont have "this is a unique special place I will refer to in lore", you can do "find this kind of place" (and even a lot of mods do that, the the constellation magic based one)

game world outside of bases doesn't persist, while in game is ~30 minutes since a player was in an area and it gets unloaded. the short version is, with a voxel game they would need to persist all changes the the world and the game save size and memory use would creep up the older a savegame is, and certain environmental changes could accidnetally make some quests "impossible" with no way to reset/fix

and the loot is all RNG, so without resawning chests you'd never get like 90% of the possible drops
without the world at large resetting you'd end up with a similar problem to what minecraft has, the more you explore, progress, and do stuff, the large the world gets, the slower to load, the more RAM, the worse multiplayer gets, and likely the game itself getting sluggish

theres so many variables, and it isn't a fair apples to apples, but I think the famous 2b2t longterm multiplayer servers world is over a terabyte on disk
minecraft has a "chunk" system so it can load only part of the world at a time, but each player loads a radius around them (and there are in game ways for force chunks to stay loaded) so it can scale
I have run servers before, worlds getting to 10s of gigs is not uncommon for even "group of friends" level
and for minecraft what slows it down (generally) then is how much "stuff" need to happen every "tick", and if the ticks happen slower than 20 a second, the game runs slow and can feel really bad
also all chunks when loaded "process" at all times (mostly, but thats the simple version)

Mip mapping lowers the quality distant textures, typically reduces flickering and aliasing on the texture itself. The level determines how close it will blur textures compared to where you are. Added in 2013, was buggy for a good 2ish years to sometimes cause more issues than it solved

I do feel like a later game feature (as in not a huge priority right now), have a few spots in each HH where you get an item that lets you optionally return to a midway checkpoint, but are only single use or something, just a way to combat people dropping from a server, wall glitching, etc. Perhaps respawn points have a grace period where you can manually return to the last one within x minutes

If i may make a few assumptions, knowing about the set, having all the main crafters and feeling it's 'broken' leads me to assume you're following a guide that's out of date. I'd assume that you're missing the new shroud items like Active Mycelium, Aerated Banshee Gel etc to unlock. It's also possible by trying to beeline for something you've missed a quest that's needed (We don't know the interconnecting quests overly well) I'm not aware of any unlocks that are specifically 'broken' at the moment

There are worlds that have all ressources that work as a storage for every material/armor. You could search there for a rising fighter set and delete the materials you would've needed so it evens out. Using it at your own risk, because you could bork your experience if you get for example an endgame weapon.
You access normally a ressource world by the most right option and type "depot" or "armory" into the field, then there should 2 options show up
Important thing: you only may bork it when you take something that you shouldn't have by then, for example crafting stations.

There are some armor sets that come with their own capes, though currently I don't believe we're currently working on detaching them and giving capes their own slot (but I know it's something some people want)

The water physics are really cool in my humble opinion. We've had them in-engine for quite a long time, the hard part has been getting them to run smoothly 😅
But I'd say it's some of the coolest water physics in any voxel based game I can think of. It's not pseudo-physics like in minecraft or something

You should be proud of the physics. And for that matter, be proud of having your own engine. It's not that everyone needs to have their own game engine, it's that it says you have developers onboard that are more capable than those that can only work with game engine tools.

I wouldn't put it like that exactly, tbh. It's different skillsets in a way. A developer who has worked on Unreal Engine would struggle to work on a custom engine, in the same way that our developers would all probably really struggle to adapt to working in Unreal Engine 😅
We went with a custom engine both because it enabled us to have more freedom with what we did with the game, but also because it's what our team is used to and familiar with. Most of our past games have also been on custom engines.
Not particularly, voxel tech in general was the main reason. For our team at least, it made more sense to build a custom engine built to handle a voxel world, than trying to learn something like Unreal or Unity and find a way to make voxels work in one of those engines, something they aren't really built for.
But yeah I guess voxel-based water kinda goes hand in hand with that concept.
But like I said, familiarity was also a big part of it as well. Why make our team re-learn a new engine when we could benefit by just doing what we were good at and already knew how to do. A lot of the lessons the team learned from working on Portal Knights translated quite well into this game.
I don't know if I'd say anything has been 'impossible,' but there's definitely a lot of things the team wants to add that we simply haven't had time for yet
