Kinda agree with the first point, not adding women out of “respect” is silly, though I think the devs are more half joking about it. As for the reasons it would be controversial, misogyny is exactly the reason: some freaks would be outraged on the basis of “women in muh video game,” some freaks would be ecstatic about “women in my video game about stabbing people.” These parties, if women were added, would cause some crazy anger online by people either agreeing with the first party or being indignant at the second. You could just say the devs should ignore both kinds of people, but unfortunately they would probably have an actually palpable negative effect on them as an indie studio, and it is a risk best skirted. Take a look at Mordhau as an example. Medieval games attract communities full of weirdos, and when they added women, the weirdos came out in full force.

with a germanic sounding town name, frankenburg, in the intro cutscene, gothic plate armor, and the banners of the marshal of the holy roman empire and the electorate of saxony in the og fighting arena
there isnt any historical evidence of female knights in the hre
also some people are sexist, and weirdos could brutalize women in half sword
which is obviously not what the devs want
so i think the route they took is pretty fair
