Frankly this is just because Half Sword does not have a good overhead swing, even after tons of practice I still can have trouble doing one accurately

It is a fact, gamers don't typically look up. We are way more used to left to right movements, than up and down. So you have to really train your hand to go directly up and directly down.
I paid close attention to this when I wanted to improve my overheads, and I now have no issue at all with clean vertical cuts.

I don't know much about this specific kata but it honestly looks like he's starting halfway through a one-handed furi-kaburi before sliding his hand down the blade to complete the strike
