That’s why you need to actually throw your sword into their attack path, passive blocks work, but the downsides like heavier weapons pushing into the guard and touching you.

I honestly think the protection of gambesons is a bit under-represented ingame. The type we see ingame could generally protect against lighter spear thrusts, short bows, and provided very effective protection against cutting weapons like swords.
