Knife in the middle, pick up, hold it back in a wide stance, Dodge and then lunge in and stab to the guts

therers a very specific routine, run around arena and do drive by attemps to pick up knife in middle, do same if theres any armour. Then once you have the knife, put it in stab mode while running away, turn around and sprint towards him and stab him in the torso

you'll almost always get past the range of his axe head in time

commonor is the hardest tier for sure, then militia and soldier are both free with plancheon but still have some risk due to little armour. your basically good by man at arms

just make sure to have a neck guard

i made the same mistake twice which was running man at arms with the halberd no neck guard class

it's just not worth the risk of having the neck exposed

Mesopotamia is not my area of expertise but I highly doubt an army consists of JUST pikes. There are friendly archers and cavalry too.
In the 17th century a big reason for pikes was to protect the arquebuses from cavalry
