That sounds like a terrible idea. Besides the injury risk to the legs being quite high, a big part of the gear is it being stab proof in case a sword breaks. If that happens to a unprotected thigh you might cut the massive artery and bleed out in half a minute

depends what weapon, you can't grab enemy swords but you can grab spear handles, you can't grab blades, but you can grab any enemy weapon when the enemy drops it
