The movement of a stick better maps to the movement of the sword than the mouse does, so it feels more intuitive. e.g. you wont find yourself trying to hit a downed oponent and repeatedly missing

Like this. I learned that either end of your polearm is supposed to be used. While this is a shorter polearm and the grip doesn't allow me to bonk with it too well; I'm able to defend against swings with the end of my pole arm, but also have it reared back for the head of the polearm to come down on my opponent if they open their defenses.
