yeahh it's a new update, people under 18 can't use cai anymore they're on restricted mode which is the reading mode you have. if you're above 18 you can verify sending your face, and if the ai can't determine your age based on your face, they'll ask for ID, although ID is def risky so i wouldn't risk my safety just to chat with an ai if i were you. sorry it's the reality of cai now😔

I need to speak out about what’s been happening with Character.AI’s new age verification system. I am 19 and a half, and I am extremely angry and disappointed. Here’s the full story:

Character.AI now requires users to verify their age for 18+ features. This can involve either a selfie check or uploading a government-issued ID.
I raised my concerns politely but firmly, explaining why this is unsafe and unnecessary:
Sharing a photo of my ID or even a selfie puts my personal information at serious risk.
I am capable of proving that I am over 18 without uploading sensitive documents. A birth date or secure third-party verification would be enough.
Their method is invasive, careless, and shows a complete disregard for user privacy and safety.
I explicitly stated that I will not submit my ID under any circumstances, and I asked them to reconsider this approach.
Their responses so far have been utterly dismissive. Instead of acknowledging my concerns, they just sent:
A generic explanation of the age verification process, and then
Repeated links to the Help Center, ignoring the points about privacy, safety, and the fact that I’m already over 18.

This is completely unacceptable. It’s not just about me being annoyed – it’s about user safety, privacy, and respect. They are forcing users who are already over 18 to compromise sensitive personal information, which is careless and unsafe.

I am sharing this here because this is not just my issue. Anyone using the site should know that the current system is poorly thought out, invasive, and that Character.AI does not take user concerns seriously.

I strongly urge them to acknowledge users’ complaints properly and find safer, smarter ways to verify age without putting anyone at risk.

I need to speak out about what's been happening with Character.AI's new age verification system. I am 19 and a half, and I am extremely angry and disappointed. Here's the full story:

Character.AI now requires users to verify their age for 18+ features. This can involve either a selfie check or uploading a government-issued ID.
I raised my concerns politely but firmly, explaining why this is unsafe and unnecessary:
Sharing a photo of my ID or even a selfie puts my personal information at serious risk.
I am capable of proving that I am over 18 without uploading sensitive documents. A birth date or secure third-party verification would be enough.
Their method is invasive, careless, and shows a complete disregard for user privacy and safety.
I explicitly stated that I will not submit my ID under any circumstances, and I asked them to reconsider this approach.
Their responses so far have been utterly dismissive. Instead of acknowledging my concerns, they just sent:
A generic explanation of the age verification process, and then
Repeated links to the Help Center, ignoring the points about privacy, safety, and the fact that I'm already over 18.

This is completely unacceptable. It's not just about me being annoyed - it's about user safety, privacy, and respect. They are forcing users who are already over 18 to compromise sensitive personal information, which is careless and unsafe.

I am sharing this here because this is not just my issue. Anyone using the site should know that the current system is poorly thought out, invasive, and that Character.AI does not take user concerns seriously.

I strongly urge them to acknowledge users' complaints properly and find safer, smarter ways to verify age without putting anyone at risk.

The app they use for us to verify is Persona, and it had big dramas, I heard that it has been hacked, or that some of our informations has been leaked. Roblox uses the same thing, and I think that most users who verified with Persona (and me) uses Roblox.

Instead of putting children at safe, they try to get them to verify and eventually get their informations leaked if something happens..

Personally, I didn't verify on Character AI because it's bots, not real persons, unlike Roblox, which is essential to chat in most games like RPs or even 2 player games that need coordination from each player.

Yes, not using Character AI has been really hard lately, because I used it almost everyday, but it just.. Disappoints me that it's getting that far.
We say that 2023-2024 Character AI was peak.. Yes, it was. But they also added great things now and even a better interface. Though, most of their updates are not necessary and at this point it feels like they prefer money over community.
I think that the "Imagine" thing can be great, I suppose.. It helps create an image to be more into the roleplay, but nothing beats Human creations.
And I didn't know that the go-ons and the swipe things were limited, like why? The app's main goal is to chat with bots. I don't think they should remove them or even make us buy for it, that totally stupid! If they really want to keep getting a stable currency, they should ask people what they want to remove, and the 3 most voted things could be maybe removed, or be more simple to keep costs low..

To be honest, they're just destroying their entire community and fanbase by placing age-check because most people are -18.. I hope it gets better on the next months 🙂.

Edit: And also, I'm starting to think that their "issues" on verifying isn't due to a lot people verifying but the system maybe just takes the photos, but that's just what I think, I don't know about that 😭🙏🏻..

I think I can understand how you feel. Unfortunately, CAI had to add the verification system to avoid legal issues. I do think that it is safe to give your ID, or at least as safe as using it anywhere else is. So, unless you're never going to show your ID to anybody, which would defeat the purpose of having an ID in the first place, you might as well use it for this.

hey. ik this is late but i don't think the rewind button is gone. i noticed this in my chats too and i thought it was gone but it isn't. so like how you can only edit the newest message, not the older ones or the one before your latest message, obviously. it's the same with rewind, how can you rewind the chat to the most recent message? simply impossible, like how you also can't pin the most recent message. just go up to the message that was sent before the newest message, or scroll up to older messages, and you'll simply see the rewind button again

Right now, because I feel like I have to keep roleplaying and such, I'm looking for a roleplaying partner. I'm 19 and a half (soon to be 20).
I don't usually roleplay with people and to be honest, I'm less experienced with this type of communication (again, I usually use character.ai). It's just that they changed a lot of things about it and it's hard for me to deal with it right now. If you're interested, here are some things you should know:
I'm autistic. I really like roleplaying in Call of Duty and Marvel. I'm very creative and can come up with plot ideas very quickly. I have a lot of characters that I keep to myself (but if we roleplay, you'll know about them).

Also, English is not my native language, but I'm good enough to speak and write (I sometimes use Google Translate).

I hope to find someone who won't judge me and will have fun with me.
Hopefully I'll find my people!
