chat the thing that fucks with my head the most in image and video compression is that how you compress one part of the image effects how later parts compress. typically speaking you apply a operation to each "chunk" of the video to distil it down to its most basic components (usually the chunk represented as a motion vector or some kinda information frequency representation) and then later compress it with some kind of generic run length algorithm. However due to how it works, you might be better off compressing later parts of a image or video with worse methods to make it compress later better in entropy coding. current encoders dont do that tho because the search space complexity is way to high
