Google Summer of Code 2025 is open to participants that are over 18 years old and beginners to open source software development.

Please visit our site g.co/gsoc and timeline for more information about the program. You can also read the FAQ, Contributor Guide, Program Rules and view short videos to understand more about the program.

Hi, I am in ML4Sci, are we given any compute resources as gsoc contributors, for training models?

You should ask your mentor about that, he is the one who would know that or would be able to ask the org admins and let you know.

This might be a silly question but do I need to be accepted to the GSoC to actually contribute or can I just go through the list and pick what I like to contribute? Are there any restrictions on that?

Hey! I think there's been a small mix-up, I wasn’t asking gsoc-support specifically. I'm just trying to get a general idea from other folks here. It’s not a personal issue, just trying to understand if Payoneer has started asking for proof of residence from anyone yet. Thanks!

The contributor application period was from March 24 - April 8 and all proposals had to be submitted by April 8th at 1800 UTC. There are no exceptions to the GSoC program rules or deadlines.

We encourage you to read through the Contributor guide, which has suggestions on what to do if you weren’t selected for this year’s program. It also has a section on ‘Choosing an Organization’ which is helpful whether you would like to connect now with organizations on your own, or decide to apply to GSoC in the future—which we hope you do!

as the mentor you need to communicate what you expect from them weekly and the deliverables to be done by the midterm, etc. many mentors like the contributor to do a weekly blog or maybe daily snippets (what did you work on today, what's next where are you stuck - short little sentences etc.)

II would suggest that if your somewhat new to coding, don't fret too much on the tech stack itself.

Explore all participating orgs over the past few years,
https://www.gsocorganizations.dev/ is a good place to start, as all orgs are neatly compiled together and also you can filter orgs by domain and participating years.

In terms of choosing a org, I would suggest picking an org, whose main project you have used before, It's not mandatory but it can help quite a bit. Then if you head over to the org's project repo you can see what tech stack they use.

Some have contribution guides on their GitHub wiki, whereas for others you will need to head to the Org's IRC (Internet Relay Chat), weather it is discord, slack or forums varies from org to org.

Your next step would be to setup the project locally, and try and compile the project. You can ask for help in the relevant IRC channels, maintainers are likely to help, but do not ping them unless it's absolutely necessary, everyone in open source is volunteering and they are often burdened with tons of work.

Next once you have managed to compile the project, try and head over to the repo's issues page to see what issues are active, (Some orgs use 'Good First Issue' labels to mark beginner friendly tasks, but not all do this) try and see if you can recreate the issue, if you can drop a comment asking to be assigned and start working on the issue.

Be aware that if this is your first time, it is highly unlikely for you to clear any issue without tons of mistakes, frustrations and going around in loops. But this will make you much more familiar with the codebase, and how to go about debugging and solving issues.

Once you have found a solution, you can submit a PR and wait for feedback from reviewers and maintainers.

I disagree with that, I don't think the way to go is to learn a programming language, I agree that being familiar with multiple famous programming languages is a good thing, but in my opinion, specifically currently with LLMs and all that, being very comfortable with Git, GitHub, opensource contribution, good in communication, good in writing documentation, understanding general fields like OS, Machine learning, DevOps, etc. will be a lot more valuable than learning a specific programming language.

# lean aurora I want to join the GSoC . So, what I do?

You can start watching youtube videos of other people's experiences and read articles too (you'll find PLENTY of these)

The most important thing is, you will find yourself when the orgs are announced, searching between many options. so you'll have to sharpen your research skill for that :) === practice getting the answer to that yourself through research, you can pretty much get all the info you need by yourself yes!

#

If I were to give any advice, would be to actively communicate with the whichever org you choose, that leaves a very good impression.
My org this year actually stressed on that point.

grizzled bolt
#

how exactly do we actively communicate with the org we want to choose?

inland carbon
strange cave
# grizzled bolt how exactly do we actively communicate with the org we want to choose?

How do you actively communicate with the org? Simple: engage like someone who’s already part of it.

Open issues when you spot something. Even better, submit a PR. Join their community meetings. Leave comments on PRs. Reach out on Slack or Discord, but don’t show up just asking “how do I start?” when most of it is already in the contributing guide.

Many projects label “good first issues” specifically to help you get started. You don’t even need to find your own bug. Just do something. Take initiative. That’s how you get noticed.

And if you’re aiming for GSoC, that’s awesome. But be REAL. Mentors can smell when someone’s just going through the motions to get picked. Be strategic, but more importantly, be sincere. You're not just applying to a program. You’re trying to join a COMMUNITY.

You need to be able to code in the programming language used by the organization and the project idea you are applying to (python, C++, etc.). You are not expected to be an expert coder but you do need to have basic knowledge of the programming language so that you can spend the whole coding period writing code for your project. You should also have an excitement to learn new things and to be mentored by the community you join.

Each mentoring organization will use certain languages. You can look at the 185 open source organizations from this year to see the languages they use and have an idea of which Orgs are working with the languages that you are working. You can even filter by the languages that you are familiar with to help narrow down your org selections.

Please visit our site g.co/gsoc and timeline for more information about the program. You can also read the FAQ, Contributor Guide, Program Rules and view short videos to understand more about the program.

I am new to this whole tech GSOC thing. Day by day I'm exploring it, and as I know more, it's becoming a point of interest. I want to contribute as much as I can with my tech stack in Python and machine learning as a 17-year-old in the first year of college. But I don't know how to get started, as you crazy guys have a lot of experience in this field. Any smol guidance from anyone would be a great help.

robust fiber
#

Also an advice that I wish I knew at the beginning, it's great to start researching currently about GSoC, getting a solid understanding of how it works, etc. But when I started I saw a lot of people on Youtube stressing that you must contribute to an org before the orgs are announced, I got accepted into GSoC twice and in both times I only got in contact after the orgs and the projects were announced.

I am not encouraging you to not try to contribute/deep dive with an org currently, this will for sure help you build experience and have an edge over others, but all I am saying is don't stress it if you didn't, you can still totally make it if you start engaging with the orgs once the projects are announced. That of course differs if you are interested from now in a specific org that you want to specifically get accepted in, then it would make more sense to start contrubuting with them now.

Good luck!

Python and machine learning is a solid choice.

I am not by any means a machine learning expert, but I believe it would be great if you tackle a full or partially full machine learning project, I mean a learning project where you gather data (or can have it already gathered), you preprocess it, do some feature engineering, understand the main concepts and models in machine learning, train models and test them.

Someone else might have other suggestions too, this is what we did in my university and it helped me understand the theoreticals through studying and then when you do a project you understand how this is basically done in the industry.

About the companies, I can't really help with that, the GSoC organizations website is the go to place to answer this question for yourself, and also, most companies now are experimenting with AI, so even if a company isn't focused in AI, there is a high chance you'll find AI related projects in their suggested projects.

What’s the best way to start preparing for GSoC?
Which technologies or skills should I focus on (and how deep should I go)?
How do I start contributing to open source projects effectively (finding issues, making PRs, etc.)?
Any advice on building the right mindset and approach for open source collaboration?
I’d really appreciate any suggestions, resources, or personal experiences you can share .
Thanks in advance!

Almost everyday someone sends a similar message!
I think the best way is depending on yourself, almost everything someone can tell you here you can find by yourself online.

and for real world experiences, the code submissions -which you can find in the archives in the GSoC website- usually consist of a blog post where the contributes tells about their experience. I suggest you check some of these especially after filtering out organizations with the tech stack you know. a use website for this: https://www.gsocorganizations.dev/

You can check this message and the 2 below it too.

Go to https://www.gsocorganizations.dev/ to see which AI organisations have a good history of participation in the GSoC program. Select 1 or 2 organisations and just start contributing to their code base. That's really it. There's no "cracking" it, just honest effort.

hey there how to contribute effectively to get selected in GSOC?

willow lily
#

Hey everyone,
I looked into GSoC the past years and I would like to calculate my odds of getting accepted, as a computer science undergrad with strong python background.

Thing is, from what I understood and discussed, you have way better odds of getting accepted if you contribute at an org etc.

Do mentors not even look at people which havent contributed at their org before? Also, can you apply to multiple organizations to better your chances of acceptance? Thanks!

valid sluice
#

can someone brief about this like i know basic idea of gsoc but what happens after choosing a domain like for example take web dev or software dev

slender zinc
#

So the bottom line is it all depends on org and mentors. Just do your best contributing but also put a lot of emphasis on proposal. At least that's what I learned from observing GSoC 2025.

I'm possibly gonna apply this year!

willow lily
#

Right. Can you apply to many orgs to increase odds?

slender zinc
#

Yes but GSoC itself has a statistic available that majority contributors who got accepted only applied to 1-2 orgs

robust fiber
#

I strongly believe it's best if you focus on one Org, the GSoC process of understanding the project well, navigating the codebase, contributing, communicating with the mentors, and writing a good proposal is time intensive that doing it properly with one Org is enough.

When you start reserching the projects for each Org, take your time to decide on the project that you are most excited about and has a high chance of you being accepted in it and give it your all, you can also experiment a bit with multiple projects in the beginning but I suggest that at the end, focus on one project and give it your all.

slender zinc
#

Thanks for your insight, totally agree

willow lily
#

Also, there is a 10% acceptance rate, if I remember correctly. And of course, if other 9 people apply to X organisation, other than me, it is very likely that one of them focused entirely on that organisation (with contributions and more).

robust fiber
# willow lily I agree on that. However, contributing is a big deal, just navigating and really...

No, your chances are close to 0, I believe GSoC explicitly advises orgs to not accept GSoC participants who haven't communicated with them and it makes sense. Put yourself in place of the Org, I have a guy who I have talked with, saw how he speaks, how he communicates his thoughts, how he writes some code, how he explains what he did, etc. and I have this random guy who sent me a PDF that says he can do this project, you would prefer the guy who communicated with you. Plus it's very hard to write a strong proposal without talking with the mentor at the organization you are applying to who wrote the project description.

But, you don't need to do amazing contributions, if you do very basic contributions or even one single basic contribution, understood the project well, communicated with the mentor on the project a lot, then you will have a very good chance of being accepted in most organizations, some organizations are more competetive than others but if you do the above, you'll get accepted in most of them, no need to do huge contributions. And once you start digging you will find a lot of stuff that you can improve/contribute to, either related to the project or unrelated.

Most of the people who got accepted into GSoC (including me) are university students, so if all of us were able to do that, trust me you can find the time for it.

willow lily
#

I agree on that.

#

Do you have any advice on getting in touch early? I remember last year, before organisations were announced, In the google page most of the (previous year) links didnt work, no discord servers etc. And, after orgs are announced I assume the servers of the orgs will be flooded.

willow lily
#

Could anyone with past gsoc experience describe how they got in touch with mentors before? Would really appreciate that!

You need to be good at logical reasoning

#

Then u can think about the code which you want to make

#

Then at least you need 6 months to be good at web dev stack which is very entry level stack -> { html,css,js}

#

Then you can learn about data bases like sql and postgresql

#

Then going towards advanced topics you need to learn express js , mongodb, nodejs, react

And at least you have to put 2-3 years in all of these above languages and makes you hand dirty with it to stand out

# strange field **Hey everyone! ** I’m Jit, new to open source and planning to aim for **GSoC 20...

I appreciate you asking specific questions, it makes it a lot easier to answer them

  1. I would say getting an idea about the main computer science topics/tracks, Operating systems, Machine learning, DevOps, Mobile, Backend, Frontend, etc. No need to get an idea about all of them, the goal at the end is to pick one or a couple of them that you love and then this will be very helpful since it wil make you able to decide which Orgs and Projects you will like working on.
  2. Yes, if you picked the Org before the projects were announced, then this is the standard approach and a very good one.
  3. This is a bit debateable I think, I don't see a harm generally in saying that you have GSoC in mind, but it isn't a necassity, also I think a nice way to view it is that if you are working with an Org that you think is very cool, you will benefit and enjoy from contrubuting with them even if you don't get into GSoC with them, it will be a great experience away from GSoC, so I think this is a nice way to look at it when contributing, since there is a chance that when they announce their GSoC projects, you don't like them.
  4. As you said, start talking with them, understanding what they do, and making small contributions.

Deepmind projects attract so many contributers that they usually don't have mentor interaction. All you can do is understand projects and write a good proposal.

I remember last year, once contributer applications started, lots of people were posting about not being able to get in touch with Deepmind mentors. And the Community Organizer, Stephanie Taylor, told them they won't hear from mentors due to high volume of applicants. So, focus should be on proposal, and to write a good one, you need to understand the project very well.

Just look up the organisations that are participating in GSoC, shortlist the ones that interest you, and then start contributing to their code.

Some organisations, on the other hand, only require good project proposals, like CERN-HSF, I believe.

So, to summarize, shortlist preferred organisations, start contributing and discuss your GSoC aims with the project maintainers.

Answer to How to contribute
when you choose the org you will go to their repo and see issues in this repo and start to solve this issue through edit in the codebase

spice crest
#

ok and what after solving those issues like where to share them back

subtle vine
#

also, when gsoc open every org publish some projects that we choose one and start to do it

your chance will increase over the other candidates in gsoc

Hi everyone! 👋 I’m Harshavardhan from Andhra Pradesh, India. I’m a recent engineering graduate deeply passionate about artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, NLP, generative AI, and agentic AI. I’ve completed hands-on projects in machine learning and generative AI, and I’m actively building and contributing on GitHub. When I was pursuing my B.Tech, I didn’t realize the value of GSoC, so now I’m excited to aim for GSoC 2026. I’m looking forward to collaborating, learning, and contributing to open-source projects, especially in the AI/ML space. I’d love to connect with mentors and previous GSoC contributors, and I welcome any tips, resources, or guidance on getting started, choosing a project, or making impactful contributions. I’m eager to learn and grow with this community and hopefully make a meaningful impact through GSoC! 🚀

Google Summer of Code 2025 is open to participants that are over 18 years old and beginners to open source software development. Please note the full GSoC 2025 eligibility requirements below.

  • You must be at least 18 years of age when you register.
  • You must be a beginner to open source software development (~2 years of experience).
  • You must be eligible to work in the country you will reside in during the program.
  • You have not already been accepted as a Student/GSoC Contributor in GSoC two or more times
  • You must reside in a country that is not currently embargoed by the United States. See Program Rules for more information.

Hey, from the program rules I found that:
A GSoC Contributor may not participate in the Program if:

  • They have previously participated as a GSoC Student or GSoC Contributor in Google Summer of Code two (2) or more times.

Also:

  • You may submit up to three (3) proposals in a given year.
  • Only one (1) proposal per applicant may be accepted.

So if you were not accepted, you can keep applying as long as you meet the other criteria, but you can only be accepted twice.

I mean, we don't have many certified alternatives, that's the unfortunate truth, if GSoC stopped using payoneer and went with something like wise, you could still have such issues. What is GSoC?
Google Summer of Code (GSoC) is an open-source program that brings together students and open-source organizations. Each organization publishes a list of projects, and applicants choose the organization and project they want to work on and apply for it.

Benefits of GSoC
You learn how to read and understand other people’s code and how to contribute to large, real-world projects.
You learn how to adapt to existing systems and workflows, which makes it much easier to adapt when you join a company in the future.
It is a paid internship, so you gain both practical experience and financial support.
You work with highly experienced mentors from the open-source community and learn a lot from their guidance.

Hey there, I have a question. Since current employees/interns can’t participate in GSoC, I believe former employees or interns can apply with the same organization they worked with — is that correct?

If yes, then I have another question. Since applications open on 16 March 2026, would an intern or employee whose employment ended on 28 February be eligible to participate?

Hello everyone! I hope you’re all enjoying the holiday season.

My name is Sahil Kakadiya, nice to meet you all. I recently graduated from UC Irvine with a Master’s degree in Embedded and Cyber-Physical Systems in December 2025. This past summer, I interned at Google on the Wireless Technology team, working specifically with NextGen the Bluetooth LE HDT.

I’ve heard a lot about Google Summer of Code over the years, but I hadn’t applied previously. I did explore some projects last year, though I didn’t submit an application. This year, I’m very interested in applying and getting involved.

My background is in Embedded Systems and Wireless Technologies, with a strong focus on Edge AI deployment and optimization, especially at the intersection of embedded platforms and wireless systems with both software and hardware design knowledge.

I noticed that the orientation and enrollment start around late January. If anyone is working on or mentoring a project related to my area of expertise, I’d be very happy to contribute and collaborate it would also be a great opportunity for me to further sharpen my skills.

Thank you for sharing all the details. I’m also sharing my profile link here for reference.

Hey! I can help 😊
Most people struggle with GSOC because they don’t know where to start, which org to choose, or how to build a strong proposal—especially without a mentor.
I can guide you step-by-step: choosing the right org, preparing skills, making first contributions, and writing a solid proposal.
Quick question to start:
👉 What’s your current skill level and preferred tech stack (e.g., Python, JS, ML, Web, etc.)?

Finding the right project: Any tips on identifying organizations that specifically look for DevOps/Infrastructure contributions?
Proposal advice: What makes a proposal stand out for infrastructure-heavy projects?

Thanks in advance for your help! Best of luck to everyone applying! 🚀

Hi everyone 👋
I’m Rashmi, a BTech AI first year student, and I’m new to open-source contributions.
I want to start contributing to Keras and learn the proper contributor workflow. I’m comfortable with Python but i don't have much exposure in machine learning, and I’ve never contributed to an open-source project before.
I’d really appreciate guidance on:
where an absolute beginner should start with Keras,
whether there are beginner-friendly issues or documentation tasks, and
which discussion channels Keras contributors actively use (GitHub discussions, mailing lists, etc.).

Hii everyone ! I am yash from pune, india. I am a 3rd year BTech cs student. I've never contributed to open source and was not involved in coding until now because I didn't know anything about computer science when I started pursuing BTech and there was no one to guide, but I am engaging to learn and contribute my best in coding. I just joined the community and got the first task to introduce myself 😅 looking forward for a cheerful and engaging community experience 😀

Hey everybody!
Preeti here, currently I'm a pre-final CSE undergraduate, I’m interested in developing full stack solutions and implementing AI/ML-enabled features. I’ve dabbled in projects that involve backend APIs and ML models combined with data pipelines.
I’ve previously worked on things like computer vision, AI-powered apps, and tooling.
I looking forward to getting hands-on with real codebases and understanding how things work under the hood.

As a beginner in open source I'm eagerly willing to learning from the community and gradually taking on more impactful tasks!

@fair ospreyHey, it's better if you include such links in your Discord profile as per rules it would count as self promo.

You can start contributing now or at least learn how Git and Github works so it's easier for you to later write proposal and apply. But what you heard is totally untrue.

#

Read GSoC's official articles; YouTube and reddit has many misleading claims.

#

I've not applied last year, but I was closely learning GSoC so I've seen contributors selected to orgs of my choice were not previously super active on Github, necessarily.

Every participant needs to be able to code in whatever language the org is requesting for their project. A beginner in open source software includes people with minimal open source experience (~2yoe). You would still be considered a beginner if your experience only includes:
Personal or class projects, including boot camp projects.
Open source projects that are only used at a single institution. (example: a club website or research that happened to be published as open source at your old university)
Opening a small number (<10) of issues or pull requests against various open source packages.
Continued involvement in an open source project that you joined as part of GSoC.
If you are otherwise a regular contributor to an open source project, you're not a beginner.

I find contributing very intimidating in the first place. And since GSoC is pretty competitive I thought that maybe you needed at least either some experience in contributing to open source or very well versed in a certain language/stack. Is that the case?

You need to be able to code in the programming language used by the organization and the project idea you are applying to (python, C++, etc.). You are not expected to be an expert coder but you do need to have basic knowledge of the programming language (~2yrs) so that you can spend the whole coding period writing code for your project. You should also have an excitement to learn new things and to be mentored by the community you join.
