@tepid kite Cool, could you summarize how the wifi driver works? I don't know anything about OS development.

worldly meadow
latent jackal
tepid kite
tepid kite
#

@jwong It just interfaces with the adapter via whatever bus (usually PCI[e]), sending and receiving packets, etc. Before, a wifi driver would implement a network interface (which is beneath the network layer, which is itself beneath the transport layer e.g. TCP and UDP, which user applications use via sockets/system calls). The main thing required in converting drivers to work with the new stack is allowing multiple virtual access points (which each act like network interfaces).

It's great that you are starting early, chime into the community discussion and find the stuff you want to contribute. Hi 👋
here is some steps and advises:

  • Find a project that interests you.
  • Clone it in your machine and build it.
  • Find easy to solve issues and solve it. (may be marked with "easy to solve" tag for example)
  • Find more interesting issues and solve it. (may be you should ask if you can solve it before working on it as may be there is another developer who work in this issue for example)
  • If you have a new useful feature in your mind that interests you, ask if you can implement it and if the project contributors agreed, implement it.
  • During this if you had any problem related to the project and can't solve it even after trying and googling it and searching for it in the docs and mailing lists, ask other contributors about it, but you should learn how to ask a question. (this article talks about this: https://stackoverflow.com/help/how-to-ask)
  • Prefer public communication methods over private methods as long as their is no strong reason to talk in private with one of the contributors for example.

This guide is based on my personal experience. (some things may be different in your case)

Do we have to be in a university to apply for GSOC (as a contributor / student)?
Also, how loose is this requirement: a GSoC Contributor must: be eighteen (18) years of age or older upon registration for the Program;? Are there any exceptions made or any cases where they would allow younger students?

I'm really happy the rule change allowed me to participate in GSoC this year. But I'm probably more sad that I'll turn 20 in my first semester at uni, though. there's no objective answer to this, but i'll try

libraries - these tend to have much simpler code, compared to an app, which deals with app logic as well, and the two can be connected quite deeply

an application is good because you can generally see the results quicker, test things out, and you can get an intuitive feel for the project and its functionality much, much faster

summarized
app : pros - intuitive and faster to grasp due to quick ways to get feedback and understand the logic ### cons - when wanting to just make small changes to ease into contributing, this can be a lot more painful to test, and might even take longer

library : pros - simple, you dont have to deal with app logic, you can focus on core functionality ### cons - harder to get an intuitive feel for the code beforehand, you must write code first to try it out

but the core idea should remain - if you are not interested in the project, do not bother! if you like a project, none of what i said above should apply, and you should give it a shot regardless of it being a library / app

worldly meadow
# pearl laurel how do you go about doing step 1? Is it better if the project is a library vs an...

Hmm
Better in terms of what?, what is your goals?
Personally, i don't think whether the project is an actual application or a library should be a deciding factor.
You may take a look at both before deciding.
Also refer to this article to know how to choose your project: https://google.github.io/gsocguides/student/choosing-an-organization

Here is an example of mine when i chose my gsoc project:

  • My skills were C++, Git, Linux
  • Visited gsoc organizations list.
  • Wrote "c++" in search box (this search box can be inaccurate so be careful as it may filter potential projects)
  • Scanned all organizations that appeared and their project ideas and made a list of organizations that i have potential ability to do one of their project ideas. (Didn't care about my preferences or the kind of projects, also some complex projects like carbon language has simple project ideas inside it that doesn't require compilers knowledge so don't decide until you see the project ideas) (15 organizations in a list out of 62 from search results) (took around 7 hours)
  • After that i started to know more about the 15 organizations and try to build some of them and filter them more based on some other characteristics (7 organizations out of 15)
  • then decided which one to contribute in out of 7.

Note: I didn't contribute to a library project before so i have a little idea about it.

Summary from the linked article above:

What open source software do you use?
What are your professional interests?
What are your hobbies?
What is your skill set?
What do you want to get out of GSoC?

Personally I searched until I found an organization whose software I recognized and enjoyed, and with projects that I could tackle (Processing Foundation). I don't think there's any alternative to taking a couple hours and reading through the list of organizations. I put the whole list on one page if that helps: https://wonger.dev/posts/gsoc-orgs

each project idea could have different skills needed. You should find a project that interests you in the field (biology, astronomy, AI, etc) that interests you. You don't want to spend the summer on a project that bores you, that's not good for anyone. So find something that seems interesting to you and dig in more.

Orgs that will participate in GSoC 2024 are not announced yet.
However, you will gain useful experience if you try to contribute to open-source projects, even if they will not participate in GSoC next year.

  • You shouldn't contact all orgs without a specific reason.
You can introduce yourself, but I don't think that this is helpful if you don't intend to do more than just introduce yourself.
  • Prefer public contact methods over private ones (for example, use mailing lists instead of sending emails to specific contributors).

I can give you my experience on this subject, after I was denied twice, Then I offered to work as a volunteer for mentorship in a project, the only think I asked from the organization was for someone to mentor me, and they accepted it.

In some cases what is limiting the amount of participants they can have are the scholarships they can give (which was my case) so if as a beginner you want to contribute and feel like your being out competed, you can always reach out to them and see if they can help you in situations like that.

It opened many doors for me to be able to work with them, and eventually they liked my work so much they invited me to spend a month with them on their research lab to collab with them, so don't get discouraged because of denials, try as Stephanie mentioned beginner projects or to participate as volunteers in the project outside of GSoC as a volunteer like I did.

Hi! I’m really interested in doing GSOC because I am interested in getting into open source but I’m not sure where to start! I have experience with side projects in Go/Java/TS/Rust and did an internship primarily using Java.

I’m graduating May 2024 so I won’t be a student anymore - is GSOC open to non-students? Lastly I will be starting a full time offer at the end of summer (August) so I was wondering what the time commitment is after the summer.

Questions

  1. Any advice on applying to GSOC?
  2. How do I find a project I am a good fit for?

Hi @subtle yoke,@simple burrow Thanks for your interest in GSoC 2024! 😁

Accepted Orgs list will be open on February 21 2024- 18:00 UTC. In the meantime, please check out the program timeline (https://developers.google.com/open-source/gsoc/timeline) for more information on the GSoC program.
One good place to look is the organizations from previous years. Many organizations participate in GSoC year after year, so looking at *previously accepted organizations *can be a good way to figure out who you want to work with in the future. By clicking on the organization you can get more information about it. Many of them will have tags associated with them.

When you find a couple of organizations that look interesting to you, read through the information on their site and then reach out to the organization using the *contact details *they provided and introduce yourself and get to know more about the community. 🤓

We are quite a small github organisation working together on a photo gallery. We are two regularly active members and some users helping testing and writing issues. We are already mentoring coding students from a local univerity. Do you think it would make sense for us to apply to be mentor in the GSOC 2024?
What size should an organisation be?

The rule says that a contributor cannot participate in GSoC if they are employed by any Organization that also participates in GSoC. It doesn't say that you can't be employed by a different company (that doesn't participate in GSoC).

I hope this message finds you well. My name is [SHAMEER.K], and I am reaching out because I am keenly interested in contributing to for Google Summer of Code this year. I have a background in machine learning, deep learning, and natural language processing (NLP).

While I have gained proficiency in these technical domains, I am relatively new to the world of open source contributions. I am reaching out to you because I greatly admire the work done by organization. and I am eager to contribute my skills and learn from experienced mentors.

I understand that GSOC is a highly competitive program, and I want to make sure my application stands out. I am seeking your guidance on how I can best prepare for the application process and increase my chances of being selected. Specifically, I would appreciate advice on:

Identifying projects that align with my expertise in machine learning, deep learning, and NLP.
The skills or experiences you believe are crucial for a successful GSOC participant.
Any recommended resources or documentation that can help me understand the workflow and expectations of open-source contributions.
I am committed to putting in the effort required to become a valuable contributor. and I am eager to learn from the experienced mentors like yourself.

Thank you for considering my inquiry. I look forward to your advice and insights.

Hey Shameer, welcome to the cool kids server, you can see our rules in #rules and get updates on #announcements regarding your post, I wanted to point out this is a place to talk about the GSoC but the best way to submit applications is through the official website, the applications open Jan 22.

Hi!
If you are a software professional then GSoC would not be the right fit for you. If you are looking to be mentored by someone in an open source community then you should look into open source projects that interest you and reach out to them directly. All projects welcome new contributors and many would be willing to have a less intense mentoring opportunity outside of GSoC (or some orgs mentor folks alongside their GSoC contributors). So you should reach out to the orgs that interest you - including looking at open source projects beyond those involved in GSoC- there are 10s of thousands of open source projects and communities out there to choose from.
This video will be helpful as well https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YN7uGCg5vLg

Many organizations have their own template with certain questions or information they
want applicants to include.

Why you want to work on the project idea
Include any background skills/knowledge, maybe a short biography
Related work you have done (technologies you have worked with)
Deliverables - what you want to achieve with the project and how you propose to break up the work (by week/month)
Clear title! Not Jane’s proposal to Org A : )
Generally 3-8 pages - doesn’t need to be a book!

Hi, I'm Fabian, and I participated in 2013-14 as a student and 2016-17 as an org admin/mentor in the GSoC. It was a great experience, and I'm very happy that this program still exists! I'm currently building OSS with a team in my day job at the Cardano Foundation. We mostly develop tools and libraries for the ecosystem and decentralized technology as well as identity solutions, including PoCs e.g. proof of origin, student certification, product authentication, IIoT, etc. We focus on blockchain technology and its use cases, not only its financial aspects. That being said, I've checked the accepted organizations from 2019-2023, and there wasn't any organization that's specifically focused on blockchain technology. Is there a simple reason, like a lack of (good) applications, or is this technology just not in focus as a GSoC mentor org right now? Thanks! 😊

I expect that GSoC Admins had no intention to exclude blockchain centered orgs.
I would suggest that you ask about that through this email:

Yes, I meant org applications. 🙂 I also expected that there was no intention and just wanted to make sure that I didn't miss to read a part about blockchain orgs in the guidelines 😅 (as I also found no dedicated org category for Blockchain Technology and just went with "Data"). As long as you follow good practices of communication, communicate with the amount you want.
No matter if this will make you send messages daily or weekly. (Unless they require you to send some kind of reports daily which is something that i didn't see any org that require it)

Good practices include that you know how and when to ask questions, which communication method is preferred for the message you send, etc.

If you communicate more this would be good but the quality of this communication also matters.

Also read their communication rules if they have one.

For the search bar, I try entering 2 or more programming languages, but absolutely no orgs show up, even though they have those languages listed. For example, the org "OmegaUp" uses python and mysql, but typing "python, mysql" in the searchbar yields no results. Interestingly, typing "python mys" in the search bar yields "Wagtail" (uses python) and "Submitty" (uses python and postgresql), but not "OmegaUp" which uses python and mysql. For context, I also select "web" in the top filter. Any insights into why this is occurring? Maybe that can be a GSOC project idea! 🤔😏

@rugged oyster be sure to have a solid ideas list ready to go when the deadline for the org applications comes around. You can always add more ideas later but when we look at the ideas list in our review, which starts as soon as org applications close, we need to see solid, detailed ideas at that point.

We have to make hard decisions each year during our organization selection, and we had the same situation this year as we only accepted 195 orgs, about half of those that applied. We try to accept a good number of new orgs each year to help spread the GSoC love around and we suggest you apply again next year. 🤓 👍

Hi Josh,
That depends on the project of each org; also you can add a comment showing your preferences between projects if you are selected in more than one (not common) you can choose. Also You can submit up to 3 proposals during GSoC. You can submit 2 to the same organization and then 1 to another organization or 1 to 3 different orgs, that is your decision. ☺️

Contributor applications open March 18, 2024 at 18:00 UTC. In the meantime, please check out g.co/gsoc and the program timeline for more information on the GSoC program and review the 195 mentoring organizations (https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/programs/2024/organizations) for this year. We strongly encourage you to find 2-4 orgs that interest you and reach out to them now to discuss the project ideas (before contributor applications open).

# glossy briar Hi, since the stipend varies based on the project's size, how is a project deter...

Orgs usually mention the project ideas size in their project ideas list (Based on how much time is needed to finish that project).

If you ask how orgs determine that, It is some kind of estimation (90 hour for small, 175 hours for medium and 350 hours for large)

You may discuss with the org mentors if you see that their estimation for a specific project idea is not accurate (for example, if a project idea needs to be medium, while they specify it as small).

Some project ideas doesn't have a specifc size, it's size depends on what exactly you want to do on it.

You may also discuss with them about changing the project size in a way like merging two small project ideas into a medium one or minimizing a large project idea into a medium one.

Do applicants actually select the project size in the proposal form?

worldly meadow
# errant tide Do applicants actually select the project size in the proposal form?

If that is not already clear. (Already existing project idea that has an assigned size)
You should discuss that with the org mentors. (Also discuss if you want to change it for some reason like i mentioned above)

When you fill your application in the official website, you will specify project size (Again, this size should be clarified to mentors somehow beforehand or your application may be ignored)

worldly meadow
# mint swan I am writing to inquire about the possibility of participating in Google Summer ...

Not sure about your commitments, but their are currently various options that can help you.

  1. Their are projects of different sizes where it require different time commitments (Small 90 Hours, Medium 175 Hours, Large 350 Hours)
  2. You can extend your gsoc timeline from 12 weeks up to 22 weeks.

This should give you the opportunity to participate at least in a small project with extended 22 weeks timeline where you would need to work about 4 hours per week.
If you can reserve such commitment for gsoc then you should be able to participate.

Note that you don't need to strictly work the same number of hours during the whole timeline.

@cunning ice

I want to bring to your notice that three candidates have already commenced work on the project idea https://github.com/openSUSE/mentoring/issues/186 under OpenSuse organisation. However, what is troubling is that these candidates were seemingly added to a private Slack channel by Bryan Gartner(mentor) approximately two months ago, without any public announcement or engagement.

It appears that these candidates have been receiving mentorship and guidance solely within this private Slack channel, completely bypassing any public channels of communication. This raises questions about the fairness of the mentorship process and suggests that there might be preferential treatment towards these candidates, potentially due to personal connections with the mentor(s).

It won't be outrageous to say that these candidates have already been selected as a mentee unofficially. It is disheartening to learn that while some candidates are receiving exclusive mentorship and support, others who are equally deserving and enthusiastic about contributing to the project are left no chance.

I strongly urge the GSOC project team to conduct an investigation to ensure fairness and equal opportunity for all candidates.

Hi, The 2024 GSoC program is open to students and to beginners in open source software development (people with minimal open source experience.) that want to spend the summer coding with a mentor to be guided, if you already have a full time commitment GSoC might not be the right place for you, when people try to do this they generally end up not doing well with either and drop one of their programs during the summer because it is way too much of a time commitment to do both at the same time. Hi Suresh! sure thing 🤓
Many organizations have their own template with certain questions or information they want applicants to include.

  • Why you want to work on the project idea
  • Include any background skills/knowledge, maybe a short biography
  • Related work you have done
  • Deliverables - what you want to achieve with the project and how you propose to break up the work (by week/month)
  • Clear title! Not Jane’s proposal to Org A : )
  • Generally 3-8 pages (doesn’t need to be a book!

How does gsoc verifies that people participating are beginners? Trust and good faith? Because recently I have noticed that some people are putting their github account in private mode to possibly try and prevent anyone from seeing their contribution history maybe to hide the fact that they aren't beginners. And these people had around 5-ish years of contribution history because I saw their accounts before they went private. I won't snitch them and I don't care if they get selected and the orgs probably prefer them since they are pretty good and know what they are doing unlike any beginner, but I was just curious as to how gsoc handles this or does gsoc even care about this?

If you want to be a mentor, you should reach out to your preferred organization directly. Open source projects are always looking for more contributors. Normally to mentor for any given project you need to be a part of their community at least for a few months so you know the community norms yourself and can help others as they enter the community.program rules

Hi! 😁
You need to be able to code in the programming language used by the organization and the project idea you are applying to (python, C++, etc.). You are not expected to be an expert coder but you do need to have basic knowledge of the programming language so that you can spend the whole coding period writing code for your project. You should also have an excitement to learn new things and to be mentored by the community you join.

cunning ice
#

You can now register for Google Summer of Code 2024 and start submitting their project proposals at g.co/gsoc

GSoC 2024 is open to participants 18 years and older who are students or beginners to open source. Details on what beginner means can be found in the FAQ.

195 mentor organizations have created project ideas they would like participants to code on during GSoC. Mentor orgs are looking for contributors excited about their community. Reaching out to orgs and talking to them about their project ideas is the best way to do that.

Now that applications are open, a few helpful tips:

  • Read the program rules, FAQ, contributor guide, and advice for applying.
  • Review the list of 195 mentoring orgs and use filters to sort by programming language (python, C++, etc.) and by category (AI, data, security, etc.).
  • Narrow down your list to 2-3 organizations and review their ideas list.
  • Consider how much time you have available from June-August to participate in GSoC and decide on a small (~90 hour project), medium (~175 hour project) or a large project (~350 hour project). Each org will list the project size for any given project idea they want contributors to work on.
  • Reach out to the organizations via their contact methods listed on the GSoC site. Some orgs also have a Contributor Guidance section which has specifics on templates they want people to use, or if you need to do a pull request, etc.
  • Engage with your organization early and often.
  • Interested contributors register and submit project proposals at g.co/gsoc now until Tuesday, April 2nd at 18:00 UTC when the applications close. Do not wait until the last minute to submit your proposal.

Talking to the orgs is essential if you want to be selected for the GSoC program. Orgs will not be accepting proposals from people they have not had any communication with. Communication is the most important part of this program and it begins now with your discussions with the organizations.

#

I am new to the Google Developer channel and hope this is the correct place to ask doubts related to Google Summer of Code proposals. Anyways here it goes.
I have been majorly contributing and planning my projects with two organizations. I believe that there is a good chance that both proposals will make the cut. In such a case what is the criteria on which I am assigned a project? I could not find this case wherein a contributor submits two worthy proposals in separate organizations in the rules as well.
The reason behind asking this doubt is I do have a higher affinity towards a project of a particular organization as per my interests. If I can somehow assign a priority to my proposals according to which, if by any case both proposals are worthy (selected amongst the seats offered to the organization) then the higher priority project gets assigned to me, it will solve my issue !

#

I would highly appreciate if program admins can provide me some clarity on this.

cunning ice
#

Only about 10 people a year have 2 proposals accepted so it's very rare.

#

you can't assign a priority but you can put on the proposal that is your preference that their org is your #1 choice

#

ultimately whichever org ranks you highest will be granted your proposal

light wraith
#

Hi @cunning ice, thanks for the quick response. Will keep this in mind while preparing the proposals !

cunning ice
#

but if you put your preference on the proposal of the org that is your #1 choice then if they did not rank you as high they can share your preference with the other org and that first org can decide if they want to honor your preference. most of the time they will unless you are the only person that has a good proposal fo a projet idea they really care about so they wouldn't have anyone to replace that spot

light wraith
#

Also one more quick doubt which makes my job of selecting between the organizations easy. Do participating organizations know the number of seats being they are being offered by google as of the application period. If yes, it becomes more straightforward for myself. I can make sure to be one amongst those numbered seats and submit a proposal only for the organization I am more interested in. This is of course if mentors know the number of seats and I am allowed to ask that to them !?

a high quality proposals takes a lot of time and effort to craft. Understanding the nuance of your preferred org and project, interacting with the community etc takes a fair bit of time, submitting 3 proposals in an of itself is a pretty tough task and many only submit one. You should choose wisely because you have a higher chance of acceptance if your preferred org aligns with your actual interests, you shouldn't choose wisely because you are limited by the number of proposals. Quality over Quantity. A single high quality proposals has a higher chance of acceptance than 3 low quality proposals.

Hi,
You should reach out to your preferred organization directly. Open source projects are always looking for more contributors. Normally to mentor for any given project you need to be a part of their community at least for a few months so you know the community norms yourself and can help others as they enter the community.program rules

Also, please read the Mentor Guide (https://developers.google.com/open-source/gsoc/resources/guide#mentor_manual) and the Program Rules (https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/rules) for more information on becoming a GSoC mentor.

Hi,
To apply as mentor, you should reach out to your preferred organization directly, so the Org Admin can invite you if you are a fit for the project (https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/programs/2024/organizations) in the upper right corner of their profile. Normally to mentor for any given project you need to be a part of their community at least for a few months so you know the community norms yourself and can help others as they enter the community.

Please read the Mentor Guide (https://google.github.io/gsocguides/mentor/) and the Program Rules for more information on becoming a GSoC mentor.

peak swallow
cunning ice
#

Now that applications are open, a few helpful tips:
Read the program rules, FAQ, contributor guide, and advice for applying.
Review the list of 195 mentoring orgs and use filters to sort by programming language (python, C++, etc.) and by category (AI, data, security, etc.).
Narrow down your list to 2-3 organizations and review their ideas list.
Consider how much time you have available from June-August to participate in GSoC and decide on a small (~90 hour project), medium (~175 hour project) or a large project (~350 hour project). Each org will list the project size for any given project idea they want contributors to work on.
Reach out to the organizations via their contact methods listed on the GSoC site. Some orgs also have a Contributor Guidance section which has specifics on templates they want people to use, or if you need to do a pull request, etc.
Engage with your organization early and often.
Interested contributors register and submit project proposals at g.co/gsoc now until Tuesday, April 2nd at 18:00 UTC when the applications close. Do not wait until the last minute to submit your proposal.

Talking to the orgs is essential if you want to be selected for the GSoC program. Orgs will not be accepting proposals from people they have not had any communication with. Communication is the most important part of this program and it begins now with your discussions with the organizations.

Hi,
If you have never participated as a contributor with GSoC before:

  • First, be sure you are not logged in with any Google account in the upper right corner.
Then, you will need to click the "register to become a contributor" button halfway down the homepage and then register.
  • After you register go to your dashboard and click on the button to view the 2024 mentoring orgs. Then find the org you wish to submit a proposal to and click the submit a proposal button for that org.
  • If you receive an error notification, try logging out and logging back in. With the most recent Google Auth API, you have to log in a lot more often.
  • If you have already participated in GSoC, you will need to use the same email that you used when registering in the past to log in at the top right corner where you see the "log in" symbol.

Orgs are very busy right now and likely can't respond to all inquiries at this point (it's why we tell folks to reach out in February after orgs are announced when they have more time) . worldly meadow
# light wraith Hi everyone. I am applying to an umbrella organization this year. There are abou...

Regarding selection process, this is explained here: https://google.github.io/gsocguides/mentor/selecting-a-student#googles-selection-process

I expect that the criteria of selecting how many contributors for each sub-org is defined by the umbrella org not Google.
It may be that there is no limit for each sub-org and that contributors are ranked based on their performance.

For example, if sub-org A has 25 candidates with performance 250 and sub-org B has 5 candidates with performance 150, then the umbrella org will rank sub-org A's candidates first then sub-org B's candidates (Assuming that 150 is still a good performance)

light wraith
#

Yes, it is definitely interesting and hence I want to know the exact procedure. If GSoC admins can shed some light it will be ideal. The example with your understanding remains fair only upto the point where each candidate of a particular sub org has the same performance. What happens when an excellent candidate for sub org B (the less active org with lesser project) has a performance of 300, while another average candidate from sub org A (the more active and popular org) has a performance of 150.
Whose proposal gets ranked higher then ?

worldly meadow
cunning ice
#

The umbrella orgs decide how to allocate the number of contributor slots Google give them. Some suborgs will receive 1 person other maybe 2 or 3. It also depends on the umbrella org in general.

#

Remember this is very late in the application process so if you want to be part of GSoC 2024 you must get started immediately and will likely need to spend a considerable amount of time over the next few days figuring out the orgs that interest you, reaching out ato the org to ask questions (which at this point they may not have time to answer) and writing a proposal.

Hi! ☺️
At this stage of the program you should reach out to the organization using the preferred contact methods listed on their page on the GSoC site. If there is a Contributor Guidance link on their page they will have very specific instructions on how they want you to contact their org. Most orgs have a chat channel or a mailing list they want people to reach out to.

Remember right now each org is receiving dozens, and even hundreds, of inquiries from potential GSoC contributors so they have a preferred process in place of how they want to manage all of the incoming questions.

You should not be trying to contact a particular mentor at this point in the program unless the org's instructions specifically direct you to a mentor's personal contact information for a given project idea (which is rare).

Hi! ☺️
Once you have registered and created your display name and agreed to the terms, etc. you will be taken to your Dashboard.
On your Dashboard you will find "Browse all 2024 organizations" at the top of the page. Click on that and you will be directed to a page which contains all the GSoC 2024 accepted orgs.
On the search bar, type the org you are interested in and click on it. You will then see the org details page, at the bottom you have an option to Submit your proposal.
All proposals must be submitted through the GSoC dashboard in this manner before the deadline April 2, at 1800 UTC.
Or

To get to that in your profile when logged in, go to the upper right corner click where it says Contributor (with a green check). Then that takes you to your dashboard as well.

I wanted to know, are the proposals reviewed by google? or just by the organization? Do proposals need to exactly match the template provided by organization?

Are organizations allowed to release data on how many proposals they received after the due date?

You won't get that info as many will not share those numbers.

It is very late to apply to GSoC now. You have to register, research the orgs, write a proposal based on the project idea and submit the proposal. You also need to talk to the org which it is way too late to do that now. Usually it takes multiple days to do all of this at the least.

Follow our instructions to register:
If you have never participated as a contributor with GSoC before:
First, be sure you are not logged in with any Google account in the upper right corner.
Then, you will need to click the "register to become a contributor" button halfway down the homepage and then register.

After you register go to your dashboard (in the upper right corner where it says ‘contributor’ with a green check mark) and click on the button to view the 2024 mentoring orgs. Then find the org you wish to submit a proposal to and click the submit a proposal button for that org.

If you receive an error notification, try logging out and logging back in. With the most recent Google Auth API, you have to log in a lot more often.
If you have already participated in GSoC, you will need to use the same email that you used when registering in the past to log in at the top right corner where you see the "log in" symbol.

i think some people saw this :

Timeline
The general timing and steps of the 2024 program include:

February 22: Google selects ~150 open source organizations to mentor students.
Feb 22 - March 20: Proactive participants reach out to 1 or 2 of the selected orgs that interest them and discuss project ideas and learn more about the open source organization.
March 20 - April 4: Participants register on program site (g.co/gsoc) and submit proposals to the open source orgs

It’s a system error.

they reply me a email. No other method.

There are no deadline extensions ever. People should always submit proposals to anything (job applications, etc.) at least 24 hours before any deadline in case you have technical difficulties, lose internet access, computer crashes, etc.

Hello,
I wanted to submit my proposal today (april 2) which is 2 days before the deadline, which is april 4th as mentioned on all websites. However I wad shockef that the deadline has passed an hour before I wanted to submit. How can we resolve this issue as this is a program glitch

I found the mistake about deadline just now when I tried to submit my proposal a day in advance.

#

I think we should write to the GSoC officials to argue about the deadline date. April 4th is written on the homepage of GSoC several times in a noticeable way, while April 2nd is hidden in deep links and not easy to spot. It's a great regret if we lose the opportunity to submit the proposal simply due to the misleading deadline published by the officials.

But you should have noticed that the deadline at this page is "April 4, 2023"

We are in 2024.

how about the following page content?

I agree with you that whoever made that page has done a mistake.

I am not sure who should we report to them this mistake.

No matter how GSoC treats this webpage, it's misleading to participants. Anyone who has been influenced should send an email to argue about this mistake. I found this email on their webpage: gsoc-support@google.com
