Games like amnesia and outlast are prime examples. They have your “jump out at you” scares but a large part of their strength is merely you being stuck in a room where you can barely see and there’s shit in said room you can’t properly defend yourself from.

And shit like rapidly dwindling sanity and batteries only add to that feeling of dread as your one lifeline is slowly dripping away like the sweat on your brow
