lets gather around kids, so if you want to have 3 vectors that are perpendicular towards each other, what do you do! lets say you have a forward direction and your world probably has a "sideways" or "up", so lets use up, so then you just do the cross product 3 times. first forward and up, you get a perpendicular, then forward and the vector you just got, and voila, 3 vectors! that creats a matrix that you can use as a transform into view space!

did you know that doom 3s shadows are using something called stencil shadow maps, so basically a trick that renders the scene from the light source trying to detect the silhouette of the object casting a shadow. it basically counts the amount of surfaces that the light source sees and if it is even or odd it is shadowed or not. as that is very expensive we use different variants of shadow maps now, which are more expensive on memory, but that is cheaper than compute power
