It actually seems closer to working today than it was before. When I tried it a few days ago, it just froze and crashed after matchmaking for a bit. Now it just cancels the matchmaking and reloads from the main menu. That's probably not a Linux-specific change, though. They probably just added a general catch for crashes from a matchmaking failure that resets to the menu.
